Were the performance/graphics really that bad for a mainline Pokemon game to get a 7/10 from a Nintendo review site?
I believe Pokemon Arceus also had performance issues and sub-par graphics, so I'm trying to understand why Arceus got a 9/10 but this one is only 7/10 so it seems like there's more issues.
7/10 For a Pokemon game on a Nintendo site is pretty bad compared to all other Pokemon title reviews, so I'll be skipping this one.
@Robokku Mentioning an issue is not the same as describing it.
Can you describe the "squashy" resolution? Can you describe the "gungy" models? Can you describe the "asset pop-inning" cutscenes? Can you provide examples of how frequent these things occurred and how/where in the game it could impact the experience?
With respect, we didn't play the game on Switch like you did, that's what the review is for, so we don't know what you're talking about if you don't describe it.
@Skunkfish Switch ports are notorious for having poor optimization, performance, and graphics, so it's odd when a review barely talks about these things and even goes a step further to try and normalize poor Switch ports. Previous reviews weren't afraid to talk about performance and graphics.
For example, the Bloodstained: Ritual of The Night review was primarily focused on how different the game was from other versions, the author made it clear there were negative points for having muddier graphics and worse performance in comparison to other versions. They even mentioned it was the worst version available but tried to make it a positive point by saying it was portable, which was still somewhat impressive back in 2019.
Meanwhile, the entire report of graphics and performance in this review is contained in the two short sentences below. "And those graphical compromises are indeed there. This game looks like what it is: a Switch port of a game from 2021."
I'm sorry, do we need to go to another review site to learn what you're talking about here?
Now-standard graphical compromises have been made for Switch, and the typical perk of playing handheld is questionable for an always-split-screen co-op-only game. Nonetheless, it keeps the frames moving well enough not to undermine its Game-of-the-Year sparkle.
Game of the year or not, are we just going to start calling it a "standard graphical compromise" or "Switchification" whenever a Switch port has lackluster graphics and choppy frames?
It's hard to understand why this game gets away with an 8/10 when other games that had the same criticisms got lower scores due to choppy performance and muddy graphics.
So long as current-gen 3rd party titles get released on Nintendo 1+ year AFTER every other console, Nintendo consoles will continue to be criticized for being a weaker console.
Don't get me wrong, the Nintendo exclusives really are great while they last and they are of exceptional quality, but when a new 3rd party game is about to come out for current-gen, such as Hogwarts: Legacy, Starfield, Elder Scrolls 6, Grand Theft Auto 6, Fallout 5, etc. - if you're a Switch-only gamer, you can't be excited by any of these games because they won't be on Switch at launch, and the majority won't come to Switch at all.
I think Nintendo uses the word "port" a bit differently compared to other consoles, as it's usually meant to say an older game brought to a newer system or an exclusive brought to a different system, but in the case of the Switch - the term "Port" is often used when referring to game that came out 2-3 years ago everywhere else but only just recently created a modified version to run on Switch (The Witcher 3 and No Man's Sky are prime examples of this).
It's a strange landscape for developers now, where before they would develop a game using the most current-gen technology and then release it across 3 different, but similarly powerful, systems. Now they have to either:
1. Limit themselves by building a low-demanding game from the start
2. Build a special version of the game that is lower demanding so it runs on Switch, or
3. Just don't release the game at all on Switch, and lose potential profits because of this decision.
@blindsquarel The article with a title that begins "Modders Create" is misleading some people into thinking this is somehow official DLC from Nintendo?
I'd say that's an issue with reading comprehension, not a fault of the author.
@Henmii Oof, thats a rotten feeling, it defeats the whole point of the physical cart. I had that happen to me when I picked up LA Noire for Switch.
LA Noire on Switch is 29GB, and if you get the cart, you still have to download 14GB to get it to play, which I did not know at the time.
Then, to further the confusion, I discovered the Steam version of LA Noire (Which is certainly high resolution) is only 16GB to download the whole game. Just baffling.
Unsure why the review wouldn't mention it, especially since performance was the primary issue when it released originally last year, but all other Switch reviews I've seen and read on this game say performance is great on Switch, running a solid 30 FPS with very minor dips.
Still, I can't say the other reviews I've seen are aligned with this 5/10. It's concerning the main negative points have to do with mechanics the franchise was built on. The review at SwitchCorner literally said the words "if you're not good with frustration, I would not recommend ANY Oddworld entry", so it's hard to get over other reviews having such a different take when several others are more familiar with the franchise and they realize precise timing in order to progress a level is to be expected, even if it frustrates some people.
I know this game isn't perfect by any means, it's definitely for a specific type of gamer, but I equate it to criticizing a Dark Souls game for being too hard and frustrating. I think Dark Souls games are too difficult for me to play and I don't personally find them enjoyable, but that has nothing to do with it still being an amazing franchise built on punishing mechanics.
@Synecdoche Thank you for that detail, that's something at least.
I guess it's difficult to talk about how dark the story elements can get without getting into spoilers. I like horror mystery games like The Sinking City and Deadly Premonition, but I think I'll skip this one just because of how short it is and that it doesn't seem like the flavor of horror/mystery I normally like.
@-wc- Does bias need to come from only one person for it to qualify as a "double standard"?
When multiple people are biased in the same way and create a standard that is favorable of one side while unfavorable to another side, despite the circumstances being almost the same, if that's not called "double standard", what word would you use instead?
@Serpenterror The point being, when a 3rd party company builds a brand new game from the ground up that remains faithful to the title it is based on, including things like touchy mechanics, it's strange someone would criticize it for being too similar to the game it is based on, since that was certainly the goal for a re-vamp title like this.
Comparatively, if Nintendo just re-releases Skyward Sword that is visually identical to running it on an emulator with upscaling, plus maybe a few QoL features like shorter tutorials in the beginning - this game doesn't get criticized because it includes frustrating controls and mechanics that plagued the game originally and that are made worse with Switch controls (dousing mechanic).
It's just hard to see past this double standard, that's the only point being made here.
We didn't run into any performance issues in our review of the Anniversary Edition, but others were not so lucky.
To be fair, there were plenty of people in the comments telling the reviewer many people were reporting performance issues the day the review dropped almost a month ago.
Why the author failed to mention these claims, despite saying he would follow up, I am unsure.
@Zanzox That's good to know, I appreciate you sharing!
Honestly, I wouldn't have checked this article again if it weren't for the author saying he would follow up and report his findings but then he never actually did anything from what I can tell.
Genuine question @PJOReilly - is there anything more people like myself could have done to bring this issue to your attention where it would actually result in a change to the article to include a disclaimer?
It looks about as muddy and choppy as the Sinking City Switch port, which I still enjoyed quite a bit, but it's a totally different looking game on other consoles.
I think this is one that's perfectly enjoyable if all you own is a Switch, but like The Outer Worlds, Sinking City and the Witcher 3 ports, it's just way better visually if you get it on any other console.
Wow, that's surprising, I didn't think it was a very demanding game. I get over 4 hours of battery life on Steam Deck with Alan Wake Remastered with graphics at max settings, and that's about typical with an older PS360 era game like this, even if it's a remaster.
Hopefully this means Switch will get a performance patch soon, it's a great game to play portable.
"If some idiot teenage mermaid wants to sign a binding contract that she didn't bother reading, even after Ursula did a whole villainous song about it, then that's kind of on her."
No reason to keep trying to bait people into talking about it. It's been covered to death in other articles, perhaps you would feel better commenting there.
@Mr_Gamecube I guess that's where I get stuck with these decisions, I have a launch model Switch so the battery really isn't that great these days and the the screen is more or less the same as Steam Deck, just smaller.
If I had an OLED, I'd likely just get the Switch version without thinking about it. I just can't justify upgrading to OLED this late in the game when it feels like the next Nintendo console should be announced pretty soon here.
It's not a very demanding game, so I think Steam Deck may have better battery life than my old Switch, and I suppose the larger screen can't hurt either. Either way, I expect to play this one a lot in handheld mode.
This is a really awesome write up covering the entirety of the Bayonetta story so far. I actually enjoyed reading this more than a recap video, which is my norm.
These characters look ridiculous, I can't believe there are so many of them with such deep stories, it's like Dark Souls lore. I had no idea the game's story was like that.
The author even had the restraint to not mention VAs or Twitter, so bravo!
I'm still on the fence whether to get this on Switch or Steam Deck.
The PC version can get a stable 40FPS, but I don't actually think higher FPS will matter as much for a game like this. I also don't imagine the graphical difference to be all that noticable. I have Persona 4 on Steam already, so it would be good to keep the collection on one console, but then I also have P5 Strikers only for Switch.
@Tamalesyatole I hear you that this "news" needs to be reported somewhere, so it may as well be video game outlets.
I just miss that video game writing used to be focused only on the games and how interesting they are, which was a bit more suitable for children. I'm not saying because children visit this site that the content needs to be nerfed, it's just so dark and serious a lot of the time and it didn't used to be that way.
We didn't used to have articles asking if we like or dislike a voice actor, which stirs up drama, intentional or not. Video game news used to be more passive, that's all I'm saying.
The characters themselves aren't cute Pixar type design, they're a little more like a realistic District 8 kind of design that isn't meant to be pleasing to the human eye because they're essentially aliens.
I didn't understand much of the messaging when playing these games as a kid, but looking back it had some really good writing, especially with regard to talking about capitalism and overall government control and putting a great twist of humor into it. It's often dark but very good from what I've seen, but I haven't played all the games.
It can be hard for some people to see past the surface level that the characters don't look very attractive, but they're literally aliens lol
It's really something to see this franchise still producing new titles after being in the game for so many years.
The old PS1 game felt kind of like a "Lemmings" type game but the titles since then ranged from FPS to 3rd person adventure, and now this looks like a sidescrolling action platformer.
Really gotta give them credit for remaining so creative through the years.
@Kermit1 I suppose that's fair to mention, but I was thinking more along the lines of a game that has modding/content creation as an additional feature rather than being the primary gameplay mechanic.
For the same reason, I wouldn't consider a game like RPG Maker MV or KORG Gadget on Switch to be under this category because creating custom content isn't optional, its the only way those games can be played.
PC gamers have been able to mod video games for decades, but there's significantly less ability on consoles, sadly.
Halo made great progress when they first released forge map editing. Little Big Planet moved it further when they let players create just about anything they can think of, including custom pictures. Animal Crossing may be the biggest promoter of custom content these days allowing players to create clothing, objects, and completely design their town and houses however they want.
That said, custom content seemed to be a lot more popular in the 2010s and has sadly dwindled a bit on the console side of things. PS and Xbox can still use custom mods for certain games like Fallout 4, Skyrim, and Space Engineers, but the options are rather limited compared to PC.
I'd love it if more modern console games included creating custom content that extends playability of the game, but I have a feeling companies are doing this less and less in order to continually sell games every year.
@JJtheTexan I think even if she was completely in the right, no one has the right to ask other people to boycott something, especially in such a spectacularly selfish manner as this.
If she cared about the industry, she had a great opportunity to talk about VA pay and use this platform address the issue to benefit everyone in the industry she works in.
Instead, she turned it into a vanity thing and she's asking people to boycott because she was personally insulted. Additionally, she's badmouthing her replacement Jennifer Hale, whom has infinitely more experience than her.
That's not to mention Taylor's only notable work in her entire VA career was Bayonetta games, and the offer they gave her was based on this lack of experience/fame.
Imagine being offered a job, rejecting due to low pay, and then telling everyone you know to avoid the company and everyone else working there simply because they offered you lower than what you wanted. Then imagine blasting the person they hired instead (Jennifer Hale), saying she's not the true replacement for the role.
You can't be Bayonetta anymore Hellena.
Mostly because you explicitly rejected the opportunity to be Bayonetta.
I could understand someone using this if they got bored at work and wanted to play a few rounds of Mario Kart, but it's just so much easier playing directly from the Switch.
Before I started working from home, I would sometimes sneak my Switch into the office and prop it inside my open backpack so only I would be able to see the screen under my desk. I hid the joycons in my sleeves.
I think I had more fun coming up with ways to sneakily play games at work than I did actually playing the games themselves.

Remember as a child when you would read exciting stories about employee wages, boycotts, rejected job offers, and insults flying over Twitter?
Me neither.
Video Game journalism has certainly changed.
Re: Random: This Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Map In Halo Infinite Is Absolutely Brilliant
Re: Random: This Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Map In Halo Infinite Is Absolutely Brilliant
Re: Talking Point: Given The Voice Artist Controversy, Will You Be Boycotting Bayonetta 3?
Re: Talking Point: Given The Voice Artist Controversy, Will You Be Boycotting Bayonetta 3?
@BloodNinja Lol it doesn't count as a boycott if you were already avoiding the product.

@HeeHo Interesting.
Do you have any other interesting tidbits about Hellena Taylor? She doesn't even have a Wiki page, so this is the most I've ever heard about her.
Re: Talking Point: Given The Voice Artist Controversy, Will You Be Boycotting Bayonetta 3?
@Anachronism Exactly.
Re: Talking Point: Given The Voice Artist Controversy, Will You Be Boycotting Bayonetta 3?
Telling the public Platinum Games offered only $4,000 USD to return as the voice of Bayonetta, and she refused
This makes sense to share, especially with how many people are asking why she turned it down.
Telling the public to boycott the game because they insulted her personally and to instead donate the money to charity
Yeah, she completely lost me there. I'm not going to boycott something just because she was personally insulted by them for offering her a job.
I think she needs to calm down if she wants to keep working in this industry.
Re: Hands On: AURGA Viewer Streams Switch To Tablets And Laptops, But How Well Does It Work?
I could understand someone using this if they got bored at work and wanted to play a few rounds of Mario Kart, but it's just so much easier playing directly from the Switch.
Before I started working from home, I would sometimes sneak my Switch into the office and prop it inside my open backpack so only I would be able to see the screen under my desk. I hid the joycons in my sleeves.
I think I had more fun coming up with ways to sneakily play games at work than I did actually playing the games themselves.
