That's an excellent point, we really don't know how Japan will react to the Steam Deck and it could be a complete flop. Curious to see how it does.
My statement was more referring to the recent articles pointing out that XC3 isn't remaining in the top selling games, despite being highly anticipated and from a great developer. I felt bad because I had full intention to buy it back in March/April but priorities changed when I got my Deck.
I still have full intention to pick this one up, maybe the reviews I saw were overly harsh on the performance/graphics.
@Anachronism That was a lot more insight than I was expecting, thank you!
I'm still not completely finished with XC1 or XC2, but I see no other reason not to pick it up. I should probably grab a physical copy before they skyrocket.
@westman98 May I ask where you're getting your numbers?
You think the Steam Deck, a console that has been shipping thousands of units per week since February (6,400 per week as of June) has only shipped 100K units across the entire globe to date?
Also, I want to point out, again, that I own both consoles. I have no loyalty to one or the other and both are fun to play, so I'm not sure where you're coming from with your anti-Steam Deck/Pro-Switch sentiments. Valve made a portable console and they have a built in fanbase of millions, there's nothing anyone can do about that and competition is good for the consumer - it means you get better products and aren't forced into monopolies.
If you want to pretend the Steam Deck isn't competition for Switch, despite being the only other competitive portable console on the market, and pretend they've only shipped 100k units in 6 months, well - that's on you I suppose.
If it helps provide some insight, I had full intentions to get Xenoblade Chronicles 3 but my Steam Deck had arrived just before it launched which was very distracting and also the initial reviews for XC3 were critical of the performance and graphics, so I figured I'd wait for a patch.
If the r/steamdeck is to be believed, there are a lot of Switch owners that ordered Steam Decks and after they arrive, they commonly mention shelving their Switch for a little while so they can play with their new toy. I don't mean to ruffle feathers, but there is definitely a correlation between Steam Decks finally being shipped and Switch's sales declining a bit, but I'm sure it's only temporary.
On a related note, can anyone confirm if they patched the performance issues in XC3? They described muddy textures and choppy framerates in the first reviews. I was also hoping XC3 would bring back the mech suits from XCX but from what I can tell, they haven't returned.
@Devlind You are making my point more clear, so thank you.
The game has an advanced Mii editor, and therefore it would be easy for developers to "create" or "generate" unique NPC models for the Yiga disguises. That would actually be kind of interesting, but that isn't what they did here.
Instead, this work demonstrated they just randomly pull from a list of existing human "traveler" NPCs. I wouldn't consider this lore or anything really notable in the story or setting of the game, and it's mildly interesting at best.
Rose tinted vision is always amusing, especially with Nintendo fans.
With Rose-Tinted Nintendo Glasses: BoTW's developers took the extra time to ensure the Yiga Clan disguises use the same exact NPC model as another named NPC in the world, but no old people, children, or non-human races. This was done to improve immersion and add some lore to the Yiga Clan.
Without Rose-Tinted Nintendo Glasses: One way BoTW's developers saved development time was by having the Yiga disguise model randomly render as one of 14 existing human NPCs rather than making brand new models for the Yiga disguises. This was done to save development time/resources.
@UltimateOtaku91 Exactly, this feels like the early 2010s all over again with big companies planning slews of large content DLC well before the game even releases. They're basically saying you can't pay $59.99 and still expect to get the "full experience" anymore and we should all get used to it.
This strategy has worked, I am used to it now.
I have no problem at all waiting 6+ months after release to grab the "Ultimate Edition" for $30 on a sale. I have a Steam Deck and an Xbox, I have nothing but patience for this nonsense.
The similarities and differences between Suda51 and SWERY65 are interesting. They're both fantastically weird with immense passion, and I'm really happy they take the risks they do in the games I have played.
Their games make you wonder "what am I even playing?", and that's precisely why I love them.
Can anyone confirm?: If you have MHR digital at 10.5GB, does this update mean even the base game will be a total file size of about 23.5 GB?
I already have 10.5GB dedicated to this game I only play once every few weeks, but now if I want to play online I have to more than double that file size even if I don't want the DLC?
If that's the case, I'm definitely deleting this game.
@Tobiaku I'm happy NL covers lewd/fanservice games also!
NL is probably the reason I discovered several fanservice games on Switch that I really enjoy, and I think it makes them stand out compared to other news outlets.
@dartmonkey All quite fair, I'm only commenting that many indie games are features/mentioned by NL but a lot of them don't actually get reviews while cheap lewd games get features, reviews, opinion pieces, etc.
For example, Nintendo Life wrote a feature article for the game Grow: Song of the Evertree back on 06/08/21 but none of the staff had the time to play and cover the game in a review. I even asked Kate if she played the game a few months back and she, quite understandably, told me she was far too busy playing other games to review for NL.
There's nothing inherently wrong with spicy topics, they get attention and attention is good for business. But compared to other gaming news outlets, it's hard to ignore NL's frequency for covering the majority of lewd games available on Switch and the chaos that ensues in the comments each time it happens.
Lastly, I did not mean to insinuate NL gives lewd games low scores on a whim - I think the majority of the low scores are fair because lewd games often prioritize fan service over quality gameplay and that you only need to play some of them for an hour or two to see all there is to see. I think Moero Chronicles and even Trails of Cold Steel are good examples of how to balance solid gameplay with fanservice, but those are unfortunately rare cases in the world of fanservice games.
@shonenjump86 The reason cheap lewd games like this always get reviewed by NL is because it always amounts to the comments section bickering back and forth about how Nintendo either needs to remove/censor lewd games like these or that Nintendo needs to add more lewd games like these.
More comments = more traffic.
The NL staff are so backed up with game reviews they can hardly make the time to play games they actually like, but lewd games are always a priority to review - likely because they only play them for an hour or two before giving them a low score.
@Uska I think it's interesting to know what factors make other gamers go so far as to say they "hate" a game company.
Even though recent AAA JRPGs feature male leads with mostly female supporting roles, it's interesting to hear you mention it as if it's exclusive to Kemco games, despite some Kemco games featuring female lead roles. I guess you didn't play those games.
Additionally, even though the majority of Kemco games are $15 or under, it's interesting to me that witnessing low budget mouth animations and easy combat in the beginning of the game are all enough for you to wish the company never succeeds.
@Kiz3000 I believe there are at least two good KEMCO games: Marenian Tavern Story and Blacksmith of the Sand Kingdom.
They both feature a combat + gather materials + run a business kind of gameplay loop (Kind of like Atelier games, but way more simple) and most of these elements are very simplified (combat is basically just tapping A), but it's exactly what I was looking for and I like the old school graphical style. I was surprised to find Blacksmith of the Sand Kingdom allows you to pick a character name, class, and religion (with buffs) while also allowing you to create your combat party by choosing their individual names, classes, and genders.
All the other KEMCO games just look way too similar to one another and they don't really add anything new as far as gameplay or mechanics from what I can tell. I don't think they're terrible, they're just way too similar to each other and it becomes a collection of what looks like the same KEMCO game again and again.
Would you rather your favorite franchise stay the same forever but be abandoned or would your rather your favorite franchise become more popular but with significant changes?
I like FE games mix multiple game genres to create a truly unique experience, but I can also understand if OG fans wish the games remained true to their origins.
For $49.99 you can purchase ARK: Survival Evolved and you will be treated to guaranteed crashes and some of the worst graphics/performance available on the Switch.
For $39.99 you can purchase PixARK, and you will be treated to guaranteed crashes and some of the worst graphics/performance available on the Switch.
By law of "fool me once, fool me twice", if you waste $49.99 on yet another "updated" version of ARK that turns out to be poor, you have no one to blame but yourself.
@nessisonett That is suspiciously specific, but maybe you're right.
As far as in-game food goes, I like how it looks based on these screenshots and video. It has a shiny/glisten kind of effect that makes it look like actual food. Cooking Simulator's food looks like hunks of chalk or cement in the shape of food.
@carlos82 The irony is that the less care and attention they give, the better they do in reviews. The more effort they give, the more criticism they get in reviews, despite all being amazing JRPGs.
FF7 had basically no changes besides minor quality of life features, and it got 8/10
FF8 had more substantial changes, up-res'd textures, fixed many complaints from the original version by adding things like junction swapping, and it gets 7/10
Chrono Cross gets the most substantial changes so far, up-res'd textures with the option to toggle back to old graphics, a whole new previously unreleased visual novel, fixed many complaints from the original game, and includes quality of life features, and it gets 6/10
This is what more effort and attention gets you, significantly lower scores.
@Beaucine Of course, we can't expect only one person to review all of Square Enix's PS1 remasters, so there will always be some level of difference and that's perfectly understandable.
It's hard not to consider FF7 had the least amount of effort in porting. It didn't get up-res'd textures or any additional content, just a handful of convenience features, and that got an 8/10. Though, if they ranked it any lower, I'm sure there would be backlash for such a famously amazing game.
Meanwhile, FF8 and Chrono Cross here have better textures, loads of options for changing the experience and CC even has additional story content.
I guess the moral of the story is stop trying to improve the old games and just release them in their original chunky form if you want a good review?
I wouldn't be surprised if the real reason they delayed BOTW 2 is because they already plan to release another HD Zelda game in holiday 2022 and just haven't announced it yet. Don't want one Zelda game taking away from another Zelda game releasing in the same timeframe.
The Minish Cap and Four Swords are next in the timeline after Skyward Sword, but those are DS games and likely hard to port without a total revamp. Ocarina of Time and Link to the Past are next, but they're already included in NSO. We already have a remake of Link's Awakening.
Skipping all the other retro games in the timeline, I'd say Twilight Princess is next to get HD treatment.
Or not - it wouldn't be the first time we've had a weak holiday season lineup with Nintendo.
In actuality, there are no console wars or subscription wars, but sure, let's make a game of it.
NSO is the cheapest and arguably offers the least amount of content compared to the other three. Emulated titles only go back as far as N64.
PS Plus is the middle-tier as far as pricing goes but offers way more games compared to the other two, even if most of them are older. Emulated titles range across all past PS consoles.
Gamepass is the most expensive of the three, but has the greatest variety of content to keep you coming back each month. Emulated titles range across all past XB consoles.
All three are great prices for what you get in return.
I like it when games focus on aspects we don't like to think about such as sadness, death, etc.
Oninaki is one game that did this very effectively - your job is to help the dead pass on to the next stage of their existence and at one point you help the ghost of a child try to help his parents get over his death, and the way this is resolved is by the player character killing the parents because they say they cannot live without their child and being alive without him is agony. It's a sad situation, but you begin to understand it and balance out the sadness with hope because the game implements sadness carefully.
Sad moments are powerful when you have contrast, but Crystar seems to focus only on sadness, regret, death, etc. and the repetitive gameplay gives little reason to keep on the journey.
-Artfully Anime -Big ol' Backlog -Creative Castles -Date Night Duo -Incredible Indies -Slice of Life Sims -Turn Based Treasures -Vast Voyages -Zen Zone
Definitely got carried away with the alliteration and spent well over an hour organizing them, but it's a very much appreciated update for someone who has too many games.
"The good news is that Rune Factory 5 meets expectations and does everything its predecessors did. The bad news is that it pretty much only does what its predecessors did."
If a sequel does everything its predecessors did but with updated 3D graphics, I wouldn't say this is bad news at all, especially for a farming sim. I'm not looking for them to re-invent what was already pretty much perfect in Rune Factory 4.
To be fair, the statement "It's kind of poetic that my 7-year Easter egg was found almost 7 years after the release" sound a heck of a lot better than saying "my 7-year Easter Egg was found 5 years after release".
@Shiro28 Like most in The Witcher 3, there are choices with this quest. One choice is cure her and she may die in a few years (described in this post). The other choice transfers her curse to another person and the two presumably fall in love.
@Paraka - Yes, a very elderly sniper named The End would die of old age if the player saved the game during the boss battle and did not return for 8 days or more in real time. You could also headshot him right after a cutscene if you're fast enough and skip his battle that way. Still, one of the best boss battles I've played.

@Specter_of-the_OLED That's very thoughtful of you, thank you!
I'm still picking this up on Switch because I know the core PS1 content is very very good for JRPG standards.
The bonus features this review complains about are just that, a "bonus".
Re: Review: Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition - A Fair Port For Chrono Trigger's Follow-Up
@carlos82 The irony is that the less care and attention they give, the better they do in reviews. The more effort they give, the more criticism they get in reviews, despite all being amazing JRPGs.

Re: Review: Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition - A Fair Port For Chrono Trigger's Follow-Up

@Beaucine If all remasters/ports got the same treatment, that would be at least consistent.
FF7 (92% on Metacritic) gets a 8/10
FF8 (90% on Metacritic) gets a 7/10
Chrono Trigger (92% on Metacritic) gets a 6/10
Are they reviewing the game itself or just the porting experience?

Amazing.
Arguably a 95/100 game when it originally released.
But bring expectations into the mix by comparing it to the likes of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap and Diablo II: Resurrected, suddenly it's 6/10.
It's the same great game it was in the 90s lol

I wouldn't be surprised if the real reason they delayed BOTW 2 is because they already plan to release another HD Zelda game in holiday 2022 and just haven't announced it yet. Don't want one Zelda game taking away from another Zelda game releasing in the same timeframe.

Well there's your problem right there - you keep comparing an indie 2D tactics game with a AAA 3D tactics game made by Nintendo.
That would be like comparing Retro City Rampage with GTA V and criticizing it because it doesn't have all the same features.
I believe this is called a false equivalency?

All three are great prices for what you get in return.

Re: Crystar Brings The Emotion With A Switch Launch Trailer

Re: Talking Point: Should We Still Be Pre-Ordering Games?
@Yorumi Do you think it's unethical for a publisher to allow pre-ordering as an option by default?
If so, why?
Re: Talking Point: Should We Still Be Pre-Ordering Games?
Where is the option "Because I'm a sucker for in-game costumes"?

Re: Nintendo Wants To Know What Switch "Groups" You've Created Since The Latest Firmware Update
-Artfully Anime
-Big ol' Backlog
-Creative Castles
-Date Night Duo
-Incredible Indies
-Slice of Life Sims
-Turn Based Treasures
-Vast Voyages
-Zen Zone
Definitely got carried away with the alliteration and spent well over an hour organizing them, but it's a very much appreciated update for someone who has too many games.

Once you get past the tutorial phase, Rune Factory 5 is dangerously addictive.
I level up just from sleeping and walking. I feel so useful!
Re: Feature: Kid Icarus: Uprising, Nintendo's Most Daring Release Of The Last Decade
It was very hard to play this game on the 3DS without damaging your screen since it required you to constantly tap with your stylus.
It would be nice if they released a Switch version that doesn't require such a sacrifice.
Re: Review: Rune Factory 5 - A Dependable Old Farmhand That Could Use A Spruce Up
"The good news is that Rune Factory 5 meets expectations and does everything its predecessors did.
Re: Random: This Witcher 3 Easter Egg Has Been Discovered After Nearly 7 Years
@Mumantai Well spotted!
To be fair, the statement "It's kind of poetic that my 7-year Easter egg was found almost 7 years after the release" sound a heck of a lot better than saying "my 7-year Easter Egg was found 5 years after release".
Not so poetic anymore haha
I found the article you were talking about though if anyone is curious: https://www.gamestar.de/artikel/versteckte-geheimnisse-witcher-3,3356666,seite2.html
Re: Random: This Witcher 3 Easter Egg Has Been Discovered After Nearly 7 Years
@Shiro28 Like most in The Witcher 3, there are choices with this quest.
