@Ohmytoogood Very true. Whenever I see an article I'm not interested in, I just don't click on it. You'd think some people here would save themselves a lot of unnecessarily expended energy and do the same.
Nintendo cowers in fear dreading the day Sega decides to release Sonic '06 HD, knowing it would give the boys in blue the kick they need to finally beat them at the console wars.
@AndyC_MK111 I'd say it doesn't hurt to complain since this work is basically a job to him. I'm sure he could move on to animating other stuff if YouTube remain adamant about making his stuff for kids (which I mean it's clearly not, there's hot potato with a pipe bomb in it), but he might as well voice his concerns first before packing up his bags and leaving the Sonic animation sphere. A few words on Twitter cost nothing, so might as well try it out considering Sega doesn't appear to have a problem with it.
@AndyC_MK111 I think the difference is that while fans do make content for these ips, nobody really mistakes them for official content. Sonic unfortunately has a fanbase that work exclusively in making more adult experiences, but you'd never find anyone believing that they're official works from Sega. Same goes for fangames like Sonic Robo Blast 2. They definitely have circles of popularity, but they're not being monetised to the degree that Sega does with their games, while also keeping fans in the aforementioned Sonic loop until the next big budget release. If the ip holder is okay with it, there's really no harm in it happening, and is definitely preferable for the business. In a situation like this I think it should be up to the ip holder to decide if the creator can get monetised, not the YouTube platform. And since Sega has no problem with it, neither should YouTube.
@tamantayoshi You've just shaken my resolve a little bit here. Now I don't know what to believe, and the euros don't either. I might do a bit more research into it to see if there's anything interesting about the world and characters, because if it's going to grab me, that's the only way it can. Character designs are a big turn-off, so it has to excel in those regards to pull me back in.
@HenHiro Well there is anime that 100 percent of the episodes are not just mindless fillers, but absolute trash. They've just not been going on for as long as the Pokémon anime, or have the coverage it has.
@AndyC_MK111 I mean Christian Whitehead helped with some pretty great Sonic fangame work and unofficial ports. People might've said the same about him when his Sonic ports were taken down by Sega, but then he spearheaded Sonic Mania, a game that was by all accounts awesome, and arguably the greatest sonic games since the 90s. Even if all of these sonic fans aren't developing content for Sega, without their community created content, the fanbase would've died off years ago. Fan created content ends up being free advertising for Sega, and keeps fans invested in the property until the next big release. Obviously the ip is still owned by Sega, but if the company chooses to allow fanmade content to be made, instead of sending the old cease and desist letters, I think it's reasonable to expect that the fan be able to earn some money for that work, especially when considering that the company is turning a blind eye to it.
@Matroska I mean so is Doraemon, but that stuff is still really entertaining for adults too. I guess I was expecting something that was suitable for all ages rather than just children, especially considering that the premise of Pokémon itself is very awesome. I guess I'll have to keep on looking.
@HenHiro Hardly. It's not even on the lower end of the spectrum, it's only mid-range. There's so much trash coming out of the anime industry nowadays that you really don't have to dig deep before the show starts looking like a masterpiece.
Pokémon is the type of show that I hear so much good things about from fans, but apart from the first seasons with Ash, Misty and Brock I find myself very bored with the plot lines. I've likely outgrown the demographic for a long time, but it's always a shame to not be able to enjoy something I hear so much about.
Sounds like their current strategy is working for them. Sucks that they're releasing no games from the big franchises that everyone actually cares about, but it must be hard for them to hear the voices of fans over the sounds of clinging coins as they swim through their money bins.
@the_beaver Does the story really suck that bad? I heard a lot of praise for the world and such, but as someone who's played every single Paper Mario game (excluding Thousand Year Door, although I did watch a letsplay of that, and the Origami King) the game just looked very ugly. I don't mind the n64 style graphics (I still think the original Paper Mario looks great), but character design and style are such an important aspect of gaming for me that I was put off from buying it.
It certainly has a more interesting art style than Bug Fables, but it remains to be seen if the story is up to snuff. These sorts of games live and die by their narratives.
@SteamEngenius Sort of disrespectful to call a religion a cult. If you disagree with something (which you can't really without any context), it might be better to stay silent about it.
Gibbon: Beyond the Trees needs more love. First of all: Monkey game. The game also looks like such a fun momentum-based platformer that it seems like a shame that this had to shadow drop with only a ten second segment on the sizzle reel to provide marketing.
Also shoutout to Totally Accurate Battle Simulator. That looks awesome.
Why does the Japanese Indie World seem like its more exciting than the US one? Titles like Omori, Neon White and OneShot all got more robust trailers. Maybe it's that the US show prioritised games that are newer, or haven't received as much coverage in the past. It's certainly admirable if that was their intention, but it definitely left the show feeling like it was missing something.
Edit: Also the Japanese narrator has such a suave voice. Boy do I wish I had a voice as nice sounding as that.
Hope the Klonoa remakes sell well. Out of all Namco's properties I'd like to see make a comeback, this is definitely near the top.
Edit: Also Digimon Survive has had terrible marketing so far. There's only 2 months left until launch, and yet the only thing we've really seen over the three years that passed since its announcement is just a number of teaser trailers. I can't get excited over the title if I have no idea what it really is.
That's interesting to hear. Makes me wonder in today's climate how many games feature a totally unique vision. Most popular titles that I see in both the AAA and indie scenes try to refine tried and true genres to become as good or better than their forefathers rather than come up with something completely original (which is obviously something way easier said than done). Last big game I can remember that checked that box was probably Death Stranding, for better or for worse.
@Antraxx777 Well the show was certainly look down upon a bit when it first released by people who thought it was just some kid being loud and obnoxious. Nowadays you'll never see it mentioned alongside hits like Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, Regular Show, etc. A shame because it's definitely one of my favourite cartoons of the past decade, and is too much fun to be relegated to the fate of being ignored.
You always see people mention their inspirations to be some of the most popular stuff (i.e. Gravity Falls), but I wonder how many studios would go out of their way to say "We're inspired by something a little less well known" like Harvey Beaks, Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids, Clarence, etc.
It could be that Shining Diamond released during the holiday period, so most people who wanted a Pokémon game got it then. Otherwise it may just be that Diamond looks more appealing and accessible to young children, while Arceus is a bit more niche.
@Arisen It's more like combining the 3ds with the the new nintendo 3ds, which was basically the same hardware, but had only a small number of exclusive games on the system.
I don't know who this Zippo guy is, and how accurate his track record may be, but I've been burned by leakers too much previously so I'm hesitant to believe them now. Besides, didn't former Nintendolife employee Jon Cartwright do a whole segment recently about how easy it is to fake a leak, and how we, as well as any news reporting outlets, should not put any weight into them?
Reminds me of the Crash 4 reveal, where it took people (myself included) a while to warm up to the new character designs. Maybe a proper gameplay trailer showing everything in motion might help quiet some people, but as of now it's easy for people to get rowdy over screenshots and a quick teaser.
Edit: I only realised this now, but when the title drops in the teaser, the ghost pirate holding the violin leans in a bit because the title's taking up actual physical space.
Personally I think it would do well if it was released as a standalone title, like that limited time Fire Emblem game, rather than relegating it to a NSO app where it can fade into obscurity. On that note, if Ninty were to localise it, I can totally see them doing a limited time release of the game, which, while still annoying, would certainly generate enough negative publicity to effectively market the game in a manner similar to the 3D All-Stars controversy.
@RubyCarbuncle I mean I started my playthrough through the sonic series back when mania launched, and still had a blast (I didn't really enjoy the first one). While I definitely don't think it's anywhere close to being the best movie of the year for me (I'm more of an indie movie watcher rather than a blockbuster fan), I had a great time, so I can't say nostalgia played as large a factor as you may think. (I also went with a large group of friends who only started playing Sonic recently, if at all, and they enjoyed it a lot.)
@Torakaka I think it's obvious what it means. It's just a simpler way of saying "Highest Grossing Movie Out of All the Movies that Have Been Released Previously". No need to overthink the term.
I'm just hoping the game has a fun story mode, as well as good single player options for when on the go.
Edit: Also the game could probably use some more female characters. Out of the ten in character selection, only two are female, and none of them are Daisy. Maybe there's more as unlockables/dlc, but right now it seems like a weird choice to have such an uneven split.
All their biggest failures in recent years have been live service games. Yes they did succeed with Rainbow Six Siege, but their biggest mistake is trying to replicate that success year after year, despite obvious signs that it wasn't working out. If they just put as much focus on their single player franchises that aren't Assassin's Creed they might be able to do better in sales, while also recapturing the attention of the gaming audiences they long left behind.
@PARK1755 To be fair that list isn't very long. There's like two or three good alternative kart racers on the market, and I doubt the back and forth motion of npc hazard cars is the highest thing on their list of priorities.
@RudyC3 To be fair he might've just had the idea rejected by his Japanese colleagues because they thought artsy games wouldn't sell well there like they do in Europe. Not confirming it, but there could be more micromanagement behind this story than we currently know.
Although some may argue that Reggie no longer works at Nintendo, and therefore the website shouldn't put any focus on him and his stories, these people fail to remember that being president of the company's entire American branch would mean that he may just possibly be able to provide valuable insights into how the company was run behind the scenes at the time.
@Yorumi What do you mean? He's clearly spending all his time playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf on his Nintendo 3ds, and dropping off the battle bus to meet some of us on the battlefield in Fortnite.
@moodycat To be fair, in the IGN article, the employees did admit that throughout the majority of Reggie's tenure, everything was fine and dandy, and they weren't treated like second class citizens. The shift began after the death of Iwata and Reggie's departure. If you want to make sure you can give the article a read.
