At the moment, there's a report going around that suggests Nintendo will remaster most of Mario's back-catalogue to celebrate the iconic plumber's 35th anniversary this year. If you read our original story about it, you'll already know this news surfaced on VGC, and was then backed up by Eurogamer.
In short, both outlets claim many of Mario's 3D adventures will be making a return in 2020, alongside a new Paper Mario game. If you're still not convinced, well now VentureBeat's staff writer Jeff Grubb has chimed in. For the record, he's the same guy who said we'd be getting two Nintendo presentations on certain dates this month, and we did. In addition to this, he's now reached out to his own source about the latest report. Here's what he found out:
For the remasters, our source is telling us that Nintendo is pursuing something like a Super Mario All-Stars 2 for the 3D Mario games. This would include Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and then Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. It’s likely that 3D World may get its own, separate Deluxe-style release. While it’s possible the older 3D Mario games could come in a single compilation, it’s also likely that Nintendo will release them individually as it did with its Zelda remasters.
The Paper Mario game, meanwhile, represents a return to that franchise’s roots. This means something closer to the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube games, which are beloved. And leaving behind the baggage of the more forgettable entries on 3DS and Wii U.
Finally, expect Nintendo to fill out the Mario celebrations in other ways as well. This could mean even more Mario games on the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service, for example.
Again, it sounds too good to be true, but now that Jeff Grubb has relayed what he's heard from his own source, we're starting to believe. To add to this, a few months ago, the well-known Nintendo leaker Sabi said the Paper Mario series would return to form in 2020.
GamesBeat went to the extent of reaching out to Nintendo, and while it had nothing to say about the rumoured Direct-style event to celebrate's Mario 35th anniversary this year, it hasn't provided an official response to the main chunk of the original report just yet.
What do you make of all of this so far? What Mario games would you like to see make a comeback? Tell us below.

Inject all the Mario games into my veins, please Nintendo.
Hey hey, I may actually buy a Paper Mario game! Haven't said that in a long time!
1. Paper Mario All Stars
2. Super Mario Universe
3. Super Mario 64 HD Remaster
4. Cyber Mario: Futuristic Kingdom Chronicles
5. Dr. Mario : COVID Invasion
Add more your prediction...
Forget Paper Mario. Give us a real Super Mario RPG sequel
While I am all for getting even just ports (HD remasters prefered though) for these games on Switch...
I really hope they don't release them totally individually. I feel like that would cause some serious "Mario Fatigue" real fast.
How about a Mario 64/64DS/Sunshine collection. Mario Galaxy 1+2 collection, Paper Mario Collection and Mario Sports collection? I could understand Super Mario 3D World getting its own DX release though.
Personal note, if they do bring Mario 64, I really do want the DS features. I REALLY liked playing as the different characters. And it would be awesome to play that version with better controls!
Oh and the mini games too, if possible!
Please release them individually, I can't stand collections. And please give a slow drip release. I hate collections, they burn me out. Theyre the worst.
Give me a sunshine remaster. Better 100% rewards and make the blue coins less tedious. Sign me up
Paper Mario more like the original two yaaassss that's what the people want
This seems like too many games to release in one year.
This is one of those rumors that just sounds way too good to be true, but for once it would be awesome if one of these actually came true.
Something else to consider- all this would’ve coincided very well with the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Nintendo was probably planning for Mario to rule the world this summer.
Track record aside, let's just say he got extremely lucky with his previous predictions... then why not just go for an extremely idealized thing that Nintendo fans have been wanting for YEARS. Just to create the hype for something not going to happen.
@WickyMuu I will never forget paper Mario... because I was introduced to it before I knew super Mario rpg was a thing. And due to that, when I played Smrpg, I enjoyed it, but not enough to say Eurgh, why Dey never make a sequel to this!
Wow, this sounds too good to be true... if actually is true, I’ll still find it too hard to believe
Sunshine remaster would be at the top of the list for me and most others. I wouldn’t mind galaxy 1 and 2 also since the bosses were pretty awesome
@Alpha008 I played Super Mario RPG after playing TTYD and 64 and thought it had comparable quality. I want a Super Mario RPG probably as much as a Paper Mario back to its roots.
If true, I'm gonna be bleeding coins. XD I do hope some of those release separately vs. in one huge compilation though. I'd play new versions of the older two 3D Mario titles, but I have both Galaxy games and SM3DW and can easily revisit them when I choose.
Nintendo just don’t do things like this. They don’t ever actually deliver on all the hype so I’ll be very surprised if this materialises. That said, it would be brilliant if it did happen.
Looking forward to the confirmation!! Meanwhile Sega should take a note here and celebrate their 60th in style with a few Sonic compilations!!
@Tyranexx My poorness will be immeasurable, and my wallet ruined.
@nessisonett It just sounds way too good... if they just said ONE Mario game, I'd maybe be on board. But it's multiple titles in the same year that we've been wanting forever. That is just godly unheard of...
@Alpha008 To each their own. When SMRPG came out it was a dream come true for Nintendo and RPG fans. I understand the reason we'll likely never get a sequel but would love square and Nintendo to collaborate like that again. Probably just my nostalgia, but I loved those characters in that game.
@NookMiler What wallet?
This news has me way too hyped. I hope I'm not disappointed. I will replay every single 3D mario game that gets released. All of them. Hopefully, Mario Galaxy has some adjustments as that one went a bit overboard with the motion controls. Mario Galaxy 2 is definitely the best of them all, followed by 64 (or maybe 3D world). Really would like 3D world, because my son is big into New super mario bros and mario odyssey, and I think we'd both really enjoy playing through 3D world.
@Tyranexx Hopefully, they take my wallet... stomp on it a million times and shred it leaving me poor forever. All in the name of Mario Sunshine and Paper Mario...
Why would they sell a compilation cartridge with six rehashed games on it for $80 when they know everyone can be cucked into shelling out $480 for six cartridges, each containing a different rehashed game? They already have Link’s Awakening as a proof of concept.
Don't forget the Mario Sports games also. Please Nintendo, Mario Strikers is the greatest sports game ever made. Please make Mario: American Football, we need a fun football game too.
Will be interesting to see how they do galaxy without out the sensor bar or for portablity since it was so reliant on the wii remote and nun chuk
@RPGamer Lol what? Where was that explained? I know Luigi is the butt of every joke but...
@Euler Link's Awakening wasn't just an HD remaster, it was a total ground up remake. That's a completely different thing.
Super Mario 3D Land am cry 😢
In all seriousness, a Super Mario All-Stars Collection with Mario 64 + Sunshine + Galaxy + Galaxy 2 would probably be one of the best remaster collections ever.
Even if that's not how the Mario games are packaged, one has to wonder how the Mario games are remastered. Are they simply going to be uprezzed to 720p/1080p, or are they going to be remade with new assets + character models + textures (ala Xenoblade Definitive Edition)??
@NookMiler I need to stamp "Property of Nintendo" on my wallet. XD Most of my gaming budget seems to go towards the Switch and 3DS these days....
@Heavyarms55 Same game, $80 price tag. I see no meaningful difference. Besides, getting 64 up to HD standards would be pretty ground-up.
Please announce this officially. Maybe Nintendo has a direct made already and that's how they know? I don't get why would they knows this otherwise if it's not because something official has leaked.
If it sounds too good to be true. It probably is
Music to my ears, this is amazing news!
I love Thousand Year Door and the original Paper Mario, so I would definitely grab these if they got remastered.
Oh and putting Super Mario RPG on the SNES Online service would be real nice.
@Euler 80 dollars?! Did you buy it from a scalper? Or are you not talking about USD?
Either way, I don't agree. It's the same game only in the general sense. All the assets are new, music redone, controls reworked. It's not like they took the Game Boy game and just up-scaled it for Switch and called it a day. It's not the same as just an HD coat of paint and controls fixed for a new controller. Which is almost certainly what these Mario games would be.
@RPGamer Oh was there? I remember liking the mini games but honestly I can't remember the details.
@mesome713 No one is forcing you to purchase a collection; many of us are happy with game collections as it saves money and space in the process.
You really need to stop your whining!
Sheesh.
@NoNoseNosferatu I don't buy collections, only individuals. I hate over-saturation of content. Collections are a plague for gamers. It's overloads the player and burns them out. They get way less enjoyment from them.
@mesome713 No one cares, bub.
You are hopelessly delusional with your constant contrarian commentary...
Luigis Mansion 1 Remaster anybody??
@Big_Nook we already have it on 3DS but yeah, I would love that too.
I really hope the return to form for Paper Mario is true. TTYD is one of my most beloved games of all time! I could take or leave the 3d remasters.
@NoNoseNosferatu Nintendo cares, I'm just simply giving my opinion, you shouldn't be so easily bothered by people's opinions.
Good Paper Mario please, not bad Paper Mario .
I hope Super Mario 64 compes witch optional optimaizations. Maybe while its on, another option to turn on ehanced camera contol bundled with a marginal bump in flight control.
I would lose my crap over a Mario 64 remaster or HD remake. I've loved all of Mario's 3D adventures (to varying degrees) after. But there's absolutely nothing like jumping into that first painting and hearing Bomb-omb Battlefield's theme for the first time.
Every game 3D game since has improved upon the formula. And they do have their own, unique charm to them. But there's something about the charm and feeling of Super Mario 64 that none have quite yet matched exactly. I personally feel, based on the games significance to the franchise and gaming in general, it's deserving of a full on remake
Zelda Remasters? Mine must have gotten lost in the mail. Does anyone else know what this badger is talking about?
Super Mario RPG sequel please, featuring GENO!!!
I wonder how Mario sunshine would work with he usb nintendo- switch style controllers. the triggers only act as button presses. I'll need a game cube adapter to be able to play it properly. If only nintendo would make a new custom that had the back butttons act like the old game cube triggers.
The only way i want to see a mario 64 remake is to be done in the style/aesthetic of the old style 3d renders from promotions and instruction manuals
down to the orange bowser, shading of the models and detales
@Freddyfred Look at doom 64 on the switch. mario 64 should look just as nice.
I hope the re-release of mario all-stars 1 will keep the changes to super mario world the bundled version of "Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World" snes cartridge had.
Remastering classics at home is a great way for developers to practice social distancing
@tadams587 not familiar with that game.. they changed something on it?
So am I the only one that LIKED Paper Mario Color Splash?
@Heavyarms55 Nintendo games consistently cost $80 in Canadian dollars. Unless the soft economy forces them to make it cheaper, which I don’t see happening.
@Freddyfred the graphics look so much cleaner
check out the comparison

Huh. Sounds like a Playstation year then. I really don't like Mario that much, but I'm glad this news is making somebody happy at least.
This went from most likely not happening to never ever now. But please let this be real. All the collectathons games in one cart plus paper mario supposedly going back to being good again? Yes please
Very exciting if true. I'm sure most of us will look back on this news in a few years and either laugh at how FAKE everything turned out to be, or be humbled that we were there together when something like this was still coming together.
Hopefully if this all turns out to be true, we can get the Zelda treatment next year. I'd love to replay Windwaker again, and they could easily make remaster collections. If they did Zelda1/2 OoT/MasterQuest and MM on a single GameCube disk, we can at LEAST add LttP to that collection for a phase 1.
@Euler Oh okay. Never bought any games in Canada. Only ever visited to go boating with my uncle.
Well it’s Mario, so expect no deals here. Full price for everything
@graysoncharles That was in reference to Sticker Star and Color Splash (admittedly, Color Splash was solid), since the source mentioned it after saying the new Paper Mario would return to series roots. I'd be very confused if they were saying that about 3D Land or 3D World, because both are great games.
Sound unlikely... but it would be sweet though
As long as 3D World comes.to.Switch I will.be happy.
@Liam_doolan this is also backed by Emily Rodgers, who twittered: “My overall expectations for Switch software this year:
I already own these entries, so I'm not interested and of course I can always not buy them and let newcomers enjoy the re-releases, but in that case I would be pissed if there were extra stages, because then I can't ignore the remasters.
What they should do in the franchise's 35th anniversary is releasing a new 3D Mario game, it's been almost 3 years since Odyssey...
Mario 64 Remastered would be dope.
Also, please give me a new Mario Golf.
Eh, I'll believe it when I see it actually come true. Right now all this doesn't appear likely at all, maybe one or two ports, but I highly doubt a new Paper Mario game will be released this year. An anniversary really is nothing but an anniversary. Did we receive anything release-worthy from any other franchise besides Kirby? Like Ridge Racer on the Switch, or a new Game & Watch? I know I'm putting nothing but salty words here. I just don't see EVERY Mario game in existence being on Switch in one year. I mean, I would be appreciated, but this would be looking like that April Fool's Day Nintendo Direct that IGN foolishly did 2 years ago I think. We got like one or two in that presentation that were actually true. No Zelda 64, Mario 64, nothing else. I should stop talking before I have some shells thrown at me.
Super Mario 3D World is the only one I'm interested in.
Mario is good but what about some Donkey Kong too?
I seriously like ALL of the Paper Mario games, but I'm increasingly baffled that there still hasn't been a back-to-roots sequel like the fans have been screaming for years. My fingers are crossed.
This reeks of a massive internet wide April Fools campaign to me. Sounds waaaaay too good to be true....so I hope it’s not a joke!!!
I loved the Mario RPG entry on the Wii. It feels underrated to me.
If this is true, I hope they treat this collection better than the last collection of Mario games. At the same time, unlike the other Mario games, these games haven’t been updated prior to the compilation release. So remasters alone may be enough for me to forgive a barebones collection. I hope they improve the camera for Sunshine. It kept me from beating the game.
It would be great to get a box set with all of the main series games. Mario All Stars + World in one case (don’t care that they’re on NSO, give me a cartridge), a Gameboy collection in one case, a New collection, and each 3D release given its own case made to look like the original box art. Collect them in a fancy 35th anniversary set. I don’t buy collector’s sets, but I’d buy that.
I wonder if we have to wait until November/December for the the Mario 35th anniversary remasters
I’d love a port of Paper Mario: TTYD since I stupidly traded it in when I was younger. It’s absurdly priced now.
I still wish Nintendo saved AlphaDream by buying the studio, because I adored all the Mario & Luigi RPG’s they made and want more of them.
@ChrisDono oh my word Mario 64 with modern graphics would be amazing! I’ve longed for a 3D Mario to have proper 360 degree camera control again. Made it actually feel 3D...
Edit - also thinking about it, Nintendo releasing a whole load of Mario’s could be a good way to take a bit if the limelight away from PS5 and XSX launches...
@Kang81 same man I feel your pain. I lent my TTYD to a friend and never got it back! 😤 I can’t bring myself to pay £80/$100 for another copy!
Paper Mario is the most funny Mario game
This Super Mario All-Star 2 really sounds too good to be true ! I would SO be in !!
But anyone has some kind of a date for this announcement ? Just a month ? Let's say.... what ? June ? The direct which was planned for the E3 period ?
AND WHAT ABOUT THIS METROID PRIME TRILOGY REMASTER ? Let's not forget about this one, too !
I would be so in for all of this if it were true.
I’m still hoping Metroid Prime trilogy is real too.
Driving me crazy how so many publishers have put up their back catalog on Switch in one form or another but Nintendo continues to be absolute misers about bringing their much beloved back catalog over.
Id rather see a remaster of 1000 year door
I'd buy a Paper Mario game if it had RPG elements again. Colour Splash, whilst initially fun, quickly became a task of avoiding all battles because there was no reason to do them.
Same with Sticker Star - why waste your good stickers when you don't get anything out of the battle?
If this is true the Switch instantly becomes my undisputed favourite Console of all time
I used to love the Paper Mario series, but it’s really been warped into a totally different type of game lately that I don’t enjoy anywhere near as much.
I’m all on board for the Mario re-rereleases though. Sunshine and Galaxy with comfortable controllers would be amazing, and 3D World would mean there’s really no reason to keep a Wii U about.
Nintendo fans be like “Hey Nintendo, could we get some more HD Zelda remakes and a Metroid Prime Trilogy HD remake?” And Nintendo be like, “Nope, f*** you, play more Mario.”
This is awesome news, especially for people who never had a Game Cube, Wii or Wii U. The games listed above are all among the top ten 3D platformers of all time.
This is amazing news, all sounds too good to be true. The thought of Super Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy 1 + 2 all in one collection dosen't seem likely to me. Would they fit on a Switch cart? I know Nintendo are the masters of compression but surely that would be a step too far....
@mesome713 From a value perspective a collection of older games is better for me as I usually have them individually from way back when. I guess these days you could have the option of individual purchases on the eshop.
Remember how lazy Nintendo was on their 25th? Just slapping Super Mario Alls-Stars on a Wii disc...
This just sounds like an absolute dream come true and it also sounds like something Nintendo would be reluctant to do.
If this isn't true, Nintendo will have to make it true now. Or there will be a crowd with pitch-folks at their headquarters.
It sounds like a well formed plan though: 4 Games in the All-Stars 2 package, and 3D World Deluxe as a separate release. I just hope the Deluxe means it includes 3D Land as that, for me, is the most enjoyable! – not the best – but the most enjoyable.
@datamonkey
That might be worse, you were basically robbed. 😞
I've wanted All Stars 2 since, like, forever. Here, take my money, Nintendo!
BIG IF TRUE.
This is basically what I have wanted from Nintendo for a while. Not only Mario, but other major franchises such as Zelda, Metroid (Prime), and others need the same treatment. I've got all games in all major franchises, but the opportunity to play these games on the current, and most convenient platform would be amazing. My Wii U is becoming more and more obsolete, despite being softmodded!
As much as I would like those for Mario games remastered for Switch it would be a massive job for one of them let alone all four at once. Not really on the same level as the original Super Mario All stars on the Snes. Unless they have been working on them for years all I can see is them being ported with minimal changes.
All though the news is not official it is still pretty exciting, I think we will probably get Super Mario All Stars for Switch online first before we get a new Mario bundle of games or as one youtuber said these games could get single releases. I hope Nintendo do a direct regarding this soon and we can enjoy some Mario time soon!
As I already stated: I could buy every 3D Mario game as a standalone release... except for Sunshine. Because honestly, eff Sunshine.
@Pj1
We just got a Direct disguised as a "Direct Mini". Don't hold your breath, we're gonna have to wait until june.
@BANJO The Galaxy games were very small, so I don't see why not. Galaxy 2 for instance is only 1.3 GB and even Super Mario 3D World on Wii U was only 1.6 GB. I think a 8 GB cartridge could probably accommodate it easily and at worst, definitely 16 GB with lots of room to spare.
But everyone needs to reread the leak. It immediately backtracks from predicting a "Super Mario All-Stars 2" style release and states "while it’s possible the older 3D Mario games could come in a single compilation, it’s also likely that Nintendo will release them individually as it did with its Zelda remasters."
I'm not sure why the leaker even suggested a compilation format to start with when they immediately follow it up by saying this.
@Atariboy Yes a compilation of the games seems unlikely... A remaster of each title would sell well individually... I would like to think however Galaxy 1 + 2 could be sold as a double pack remastered as a full retail release.
@AlexSora89 Yeah I'm thinking this will be the E3-replacement direct.
I also expect GB/GB Color games to be added on Nintendo Switch Online, so Super Mario Land 1, 2 and Wario games
Peeps... this is April Fools shenanigans. Consider—Galaxy can’t work easily without motion controls. Sure, you have some motion control on the Switch, but it’s not as precise without the sensor bar. And motion control for Galaxy in handheld mode? Forget it.
I’m totally behind this - I’d 100% buy an HD port/remaster of Mario 64 (even better if it’s based in the DS version), an HD Mario Galaxy collection and a port of 3D World, even as separate games. Fingers crossed this is true!
@WickyMuu Dude, Mario&Luigi games are Mario rpg games with the same defense and attack push buttons attack and defense features than Mario rpg. Are 3 of they.
This sounds too good to be true. If it does happen, we will probably have a year of Zelda next year capped off by the Breath of the Wild sequel
Hoping for a regular Direct this week to officially announce this.
@mesome713
Your opinion makes no sense, though. “Overwhelms the player?” Well, buying the games individually overwhelms my wallet. I’d rather pay $60 than $200+.
Why would you be overwhelmed? Play one game at a time and when you’re done, move on to the next one. Easy.
@BanjoPickles Gamers feel like they have to rush to play it all so they don't miss out on talking with friends. That's why collections are straight garbage.
Gamers need drip fed. Like how Nintendo and other companies are doing with games. Releasing them slowly so gamers don't feel rushed to play so much. Too many awesome games out there to waste so much time so quickly on old stuff.
Trust me, collections are just the worst. Scum of the earth.
Super Mario 64 remains to be my all time favorite video game. I don't say that lightly, as I have so many favorites. My first true 3D game still holds up to everything I've played since. I would love to see a proper remaster, if it was handled well. A Switch port would certainly be enough for me.
I would also love to see ports or remasters of Thousand Year Door, Super Mario Sunshine, Galaxy 1 and 2, and 3D Land and World. You just can't go wrong with 3D Mario games. They're one of the major reasons I still play videogames.
@mesome713 That’s an objectively bad opinion. You know that if these are released separately we will be paying $60 for them each. It would be better to only have to pay $60 for one collection of remasters.
@-Juice- You get what you pay for. Collections usually never come with awesome updates. It's usually boring ports. I'd rather have a single release like with Wind Waker.
I played Paper Mario TTYD 2 years ago when I rebought a Gamecube. I then gave it to my cousin as a birthday present so would grab a remake/remaster on day 1.
And a new Paper Mario in the style of the first 2 (maybe Super Paper Mario inspired), I would love to see. I really hope Nintendo have seen that Colour Splash and Sticker Star are just not what most gamers want. And the plus to Alphadream going under could mean we get a traditional Paper Mario game now that there are no longer 2 handheld mario rpg series going.
@mesome713
“Trust me, collections are scum of the earth.”
Says you. In a rush to beat them so they can discuss it with friends? That logic makes no sense. Me, personally? I love collections because they’re easy on my wallet, on space, and I don’t have to juggle cartridges.
Drip feed sucks, plain and simple.
If this is true, I hope they add a bit of QOL improvements to Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Make the camera align with modern standards and fix up the issues in Sunshine.
I’d also love a ‘Super Mario All Stars Plus’ type things with the Gameboy games getting the treatment but that’s clearly a pipe dream. They’ll be on NSO at some point I imagine.
@RedZone908
They’ve already provided a solution in the Nvidia Shield release of Galaxy. They can carry that across. Fingers crossed as the Galaxy games are incredible, but could be even better without waggle.
@electrolite77
Yeah, I'm fairly certain the 2D Mario games that aren't already on NSO will be made available on NSO rather than getting retail releases via remasters.
It seems like the rumored Mario collection will only consist of the 3D Mario games.
a new paper mario game, styled back to its roots, would sell me on a switch. Get to it nintendo! dont get me wrong, there are a handful of exclusives on it i already want to play, however this new paper mario rumored would seal the deal in me deciding to get one. i absolutely Loved the first two games, and played the crap out of them all the time.
Just imagine if they remastered 64 with the Oddyssey-engine so that all of it looked like mushroom kingdom does there!
35th seems an odd anniversary to make a fuss of to me, but more games is good.
Seems too good to be true, but then the original All-Stars was pretty mad, especially the version with Mario World.
I just want the Mario and Luigi rpgs to come to the switch
Could it be April’s Fool?!
Sunshine in HD would be enough for me alone, everything else would be a bonus ! Although i wonder if they'll rename Corona mountain ?
@Toadie Wow, yeah didn't think of that. They would have to rename it I guess.
Sunshine HD would be what I want the most but am taking it all with a pinch of salt as it's April 1st tomorrow.
@RedZone908 Nintendo has released Galaxy on the Nvidia Sheild(basically a Switch) in China, so that port is already made and working fine without the waggle.
Sounds like the logical choice for the anniversary and with the bare schedule it makes even more sense
Maybe they dump some ports on the online-service, but nothing more then that.
As for Paper mario: A new traditional one would be great, but not without a diverse cast and interesting story. I guess it will be a very simple story (just Bowser kidnapping Peach) and Toads overload. Not something magnificent like Rogue town. Rogue town was brimming with secrets and shady people. I can't see Nintendo doing such a thing again. And I don't think they do a traditional one either.
