You don't need to be a rocket scientist to notice that the limited number of windows on the Nintendo Switch HOME screen won't last players forever. Of course, the system isn't going to stop you from owning lots of games, so it opens up another screen once you've passed a modest-ish number of titles.
As we download pretty much everything for video content we've come up against this limitation, and what we have is a new menu for displaying more software. You can see it below.
The wording of 'software' obviously keeps things open for other apps, TV streaming and so on. Yet that's not 'new', as such.
So there you go, rather than just adding lots of sideways windows you have a separate screen - the design is quite reminiscent of the PS4 UI, in a way.
Are you such a big spender that you've unlocked this menu?

Ok, i was actually worried about this, but I'm happy to see a solution has already been applied.
I expected it, seems like the only way they could have more than the original row. Wish the squares were a little smaller on both menus tho or at least an option.
We need a themes update option like the 3DS come on Nintendo , I know it's just a matter of time .
Also worth noting that the home menu allows you to "archive" software, which deletes the actual game data but retains the icon on your home menu, and the save data.
Doing so will accrue icons and let you keep space for the games you are currently playing, if you want to play it again you'll need to redownload it.
It's similar to how the game icons for your physical games remain on the home menu, even when the game card is not inserted. I think it's a pretty interesting way to keep your entire library on record.
@Romeo-75 Agreed. Even if they start slow, like offering different colors instead of just black and white...
Interesting approach to introducing certain features and options after certain criteria have been met. And I can understand why Nintendo is doing this; it's just one way to avoid overwhelming the more casual users with an excess of options and stuff prior to them really needing to use them. I do, however, hope there's some way to actually sort and arrange things in the larger menu at least planned for a future update. There's no point in keeping things sooo basic that people who actually want a bit more freedom don't really have any choice or say in the matter.
The entire main screen, eshop and settings is a step backwards from the Wii U and 3DS which both remain superior to the Switch on those areas. I'm not talking about the lack of Netflix either. Basic options like folders, tine played and rating games you've played. It just feels more bare bones than Street Fighter V on launch day.
Feels PS4 like. I like
It's reminiscent of the PS4 design because both systems are based on the same OS. They both run a FreeBSD kernel.
@Bass_X0
There is a time tracker that appears after 10 days
So, no folders? PS4 users were clamoring for folders for 3 years, finally happy to get them. 3DS has had folders for how many years now? Would be nice to have folders by platform once VC gets into full swing. I'd really want all those NeoGeo games in a folder. And a "Streaming" folder once those apps appear, I'm guessing they will eventually.
Question - does that long string of games vary by account? Would be tough if we had a dozen games and each persons game wound up at the same beginning. Our PS4, PS3 and Wii U accounts all have different menu lay outs. Well at least I think they do, now I need to go check as I haven't been on anyone else's account in awhile. I know our PS3 and Wii U accounts all look different.
this has already been found out about a week ago.
From the leaked dev kit stuff I think there may be a quick option to access this menu, something to do with the home button. Perhaps it's worth trying a few things to see what works? I think it could be by pressing it twice in succession but I'm not sure. Could be anything
@Bass_X0
You're so right.
Missing features is one thing. Removing features that you already had in previous systems is absolutely inexcusable.
Thats also the reason i am completely fed up with Pokemon. How dare they remove fantastic functions that they know people love? Masuda once said they abandon certain features to keep them exclusive to that gen. Well, goodbye then. Pannenkoek.
@IceClimbers
What does the underlying kernel/OS have to do with anything?
You made a video to show us that you get an extra menu screen that you told us about in the title.
Cool, thanks.
@FNL Well, it's better than a screenshot and the details are easier to see than read. Plus, you can't see it for yourself unless you buy 13 games. What's the problem?
Reminds me of how the PS4 has it's menu laid out. Though I like the Switch's much better.
I want to be able to install my cartridge games in the console!
@IceClimbers Yeah, FreeBSD has nothing to do with anything here. That OS doesn't provide it's own GUI or API for apps or anything. This interface is built without any consideration for the OS. MacOS shares part of FreeBSD as well, but that has no bearing on the GUI.
@aaronsullivan I find it really amusing when they make videos for things that could be easily (and often better) accomplished with a simple article.
"In Mario Odyssey, you can change Mario's shirt color to green!"
(3:52) Video
Gotta get that youtube revenue, I guess.
@Frank90 Digital Download is for that. I guess you can't have it both ways unless the cartridge could somehow have an account written to it? Otherwise you could just install over and over on everyone's Switch from one cartridge. Works with discs on other consoles because you have to have the (uniquely identified) disc in the tray to play. You could do that with cartridges, but then... that would ruin the benefit.
@ballistic90: I was too, especially since, unlike the Wii U, game card games seem to forever get an icon...it doesn't disappear after the game gets ejected. It's a smart look and so very thankful for the ad-less screen.
@FNL I hear you. I hate going to an article that ends up telling you that you have to watch a video to get basic information, for instance.
This is the opposite though. If you want the basic info, the article gives it to you in writing (headline even) but if you want visuals video makes sense here.
I really don't like getting news and information from YouTube videos in general as text is way faster, I don't have time to sit through a video. Still don't see a problem here, though. Seems best of both worlds.
I only have 3 Switch games at the moment. Zelda, Snipperclips & Bomberman. If there were games that I wanted I'd have more.
Good to see this menu exists... but I still think the 3DS way of doing things is WAY better.
Please Nintendo, let us choose where we want to place our games. Please allow folders. I don't want physical games that aren't in the console to be listed.
Agreed - dislike having to always watch a video when it could be offered with key info broken down in text below.
Go Nintendo does this well.
Love the U.I., but this NEEDS some sort of folder system.
@aaronsullivan I get what you're saying too, but I still think this one could have been accomplished with three lines of text and a screenshot or two. But different strokes and all.
I noticed this just this morning when I bought 2 Neo Geo games and World of Goo. It's almost identical to the PS4 layout. Just needs folders and we'll be good. Took Wii U a couple years, took 3DS a couple years, took PS4 a couple years, even took Vita a couple years... so I'm guessing it'll be a couple years
@rjejr
I assume you mean those Neo GEO games, not Nat Geo... National Geographic games 😀
I like that you start it up to see your latest software. Maybe the All Software could be a static button somewhere on the home screen.
Lol you will have to wait awhile to open it up,there ain't enough games worth buying yet.. Just kidding guys
Lol. "All Software" appear when your game is more than 12 and hide your 13th games and next from your vision.
@IceClimbers The fact that they both use parts of the FreeBSD kernel has absolutely no bearing on their UI design.
@RupeeClock I strongly prefer this to PS4 having a seperate Library and Purchases, especially in lieu of trophies - I can still scroll through games I've played and reminisce.
@Bass_X0 That's a funny way to put it. Switch/SFV at launch: barebones, yet every essential thing you actually need to access done right.
Saw this on launch day but cool.
@Bass_X0 Nope, the entire main screen, eshop and settings is a step forward from the Wii U and 3DS
Kind of like how the online profiles on this start with showing when you "First Played" a certain title, but after a certain amount of time, it shows how long you've been playing them. At first I thought, "why is first time important?" But when I saw the eventual change it made a lot more sense.
...that's cool..since you'll be the first to get there too, let us know when you hit the cap on icons..(if there is one, I think 3ds is @ 300)..
@JaxonH I thought they were games based on the new Planet Earth II TV show. Nice catch.
Did I tell you I got my first PS Plat after about 8 years or however long it's been? I lost my trophy virginity.
@Cosats There is something to be said for simplicity and accessibility. I personally thought I would be annoyed by the lack of a 2 dimensional array of icons, but honestly I'm beginning to prefer this.
@JaxonH I guess your right and it gonna take a couple years😉
@Bass_X0 @Ralizah @Moon I'd imagine folders are coming in a future update. Wii U and 3DS didn't have folders at launch, either.
i have discovered this way before you lol
@rjejr 8 years for your first plat? Jeez here I thought me getting my first one was long(2 1/2 years)
What game did you platinum?
@FNL Are you saying you prefer clickbait where you have no idea what it's going to be until you enter the article? Nice one.
When? If!
@Bass_X0 I know you meant your comment as an insult, however considering that SFV launched competitive gamer ready (there were a few hiccups...I didn't have any problems myself) and the Switch UI gets you right into the setup and the new games you bought quickly it makes your comment come off as a compliment.
Already saw this on Giantbomb. I thought others may have seen this before. I'm glad it's not a continuous scroll!
Wow, squares. And when u need more squares you get....more squares. Nintendo is amazing.
I… don't like it. I like how the icons for cartridge games remain on the menu, but I wish that I could organise the icons a la Wii U, and I wish that there was a way to personalise the menu for each user on the console (again… a la Wii U). I don't want children to be able to access (or so much as see the icon) for adult games, should such games be released in the future, and I want to be able to remove icons for games that I do not want other users playing (irrespective of its age classification).
A "Guest" profile would also be really nice (in addition to the eight standard user profiles) that could, for example, unlocks all content in games such as Mario Kart right off the bat for one-off users who do not wish to commit to the full user profile experience, and any data saved in Guest profiles should have no bearing on any other user profile on the system.
@rjejr I have a US and Japanese account, it seems every game from each account shows up on the line of icons. When I bought the NEOGEO games from the Japanese eShop at launch, they showed up even when I'm signed in on the US account (it did default to English menus, though). Strangely, both accounts' news feeds are merged. I have a hefty news feed, but I can only understand half of it, LOL.
Jesus, these videos are dull.
Glad that it's getting better.
They better not limit us to 300 again like on Wii U!! 😡
When is the correct word to use.
they really need better game organization options.
@Loui Maybe they can do the Michael Bay thing and toss in some pointless explosions.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE When. I can be a humorless pedant too.
@FTL Completely missed the point. I hate click-bait. Which is what this article basically is, it's glorified click-bait where the fact that it's a video suggests that there is more to learn from watching it.
You click the video, NL makes their youtube revenue.
I actually love this!! Way nicer than the 3DS or Wii U menus imo! Really simple, clean interface.
@FNL Well I'm not sure this was the worst offender but I'll support your comment because I definetely hate click-bait.
@liljmoore "What game did you platinum?"
Jak and Daxter. I had an old save point from 2013 where I remembered I was about 30 "eggs" short (can never remember what those things are called). I got the 101 powercells back then, and back when it was on PS2. It's still in my head as my all time favorite game, so I got to thinking someday I'd be dead and my kids would be looking at my profile thinking "poor dad, he never got a platinum' so I figured I should have one, and getting it on my favorite game seemed like the way to go. I've never got close to plat on any other game before, my closest is 1 of the R&C games, maybe Tools of Destruction, around 72%. I just play games until the end and then I'm done. If Starfox Adventures on GameCube had 1 I'd probably plat that, my 2nd favorite game. Maybe FF7 back on PS1 would have tempted me when I was younger, but 2 play thrus and I know there are parts I missed. FF8 might have been doable, completed that twice as well. Nowadays every game has multiplayer I don't care about or a hard mode I won't bother with. I play games for fun, when they stop being fun I stop playing. Could be 5 minutes in or 300 hours in - Spaltoon - but I don't go for trophies.
@masterLEON "Strangely, both accounts' news feeds are merged. I have a hefty news feed, but I can only understand half of it, LOL."
Thanks for all of that, very interesting. It seems like there are separate accounts for save files only but everything else is merged. Kind of weird. It is good to be able to see all of your games at once. I suppose Ninnteod knew that would happen when they made the console and games region free, yet still required a different account for each region.
Maybe they will come around though and let people personalize things. As nice as it is that all of our PS3 and PS4 accounts can see every game and demo from every account and region, we like having different themes, makes us feel like the console is ours no matter who is playing it. Course Switch needs to get some more themes first.
