After their explosive announcement earlier in the year, there's a sense that the buzz around the Sonic Boom games on Wii U and 3DS has faded a little. It won't be long before we see what they have to offer, however, as both arrive in November.
3DS release Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal is being developed by California-based studio Sanzaru Games, and it's now released a slick behind the scenes video in which the team discusses the upcoming title and shows a good deal of footage. The portable entry is primarily a 2D platformer, of course, though the various team members talk up mechanics such as switching out characters and the EnerBeam, while there's a brief segment on interaction between the Wii U and 3DS titles.
Check this out below and let us know whether you're excited about this release.

I'm excited! Its definitely a change up. I'll probably get this one first.
Should I be excited for the Wii U? @ThomasBW84 you need to press that big red button...
I will have to think quite carefully about this, almost everything they are speaking about are mechanics that I really don't think I want. (What I had seen up to this point I was pretty interested but there seems to be annoying collectables no real speed and stopping all the time).
(I like Sonic Rush most out of the handheld exclusive 2D Sonic Games).
There again I am still enjoying trying to improve at the Wii U Lost World. (I wish they would just announce the next Japanese developed one).
Looks like the slowest sonic game yet.
@OneBagTravel
Sonic isn't always about speed. In Sonic 1, 2, 3, &Knuckles, Adventure, and Lost World, you couldn't just go fast all the time. You had to replay the levels, learn the layout, and then you could learn when and where to go fast and get the best times in each level. At it's core, Sonic The Hedgehog is a platformer, and speed is just a reward.
I am more interested in the Wii U version myself, but this one looks nice too.
@OneBagTravel Sonic has never worked well as a speed platformer. The level design (while very good) doesn't quite flow well enough for you to just be able to run through it. It is a platfomer with the illusion of being a speed platformer. IMO of course.
Looks like an adventure game, which can be good. It opens new possibilities for the future because they can develop sonic adventure games and speed platformers side by side.
Glad it's not just another boost to win game.
Their enthusiasm is cute. The whole Bionic Commando thing seems pretty interesting. Styx looks cool but I'm an Amy fan so I'm more interested in the Wii U version for that sole reason.
This gives me a DKC vibe, (local etc..), its a nice change up, but I think I'm more interested in the Wii U version, however, the last sonic game I played was sonic rush on the DS, & sonic adventure 2 for the GC, so my knowledge of what makes a good Sonic game is a little loose.
Well they sure put thought into this one
@SammytheSaiyan You must have cared if you went through all of this effort to post.
While this game impresses me (anything metroidvania-style is up my alley), the Wii U one isn't looking so hot. Various people who have tried the demo said that they were unimpressed and that it was too simple and boring. Good reviews might change my mind, though.
This game actually gets me excited! It looks so fun and it will be a good 2D platformer (that we are severely lack of).
This game looks great, but I don't have a 3DS yet. I will pick this up if I get the New 3DS, but for the time being I'll def be buying the WiiU version. It looks old school and cool.
Its spectacular how little faith this video has given me in the game.
They said Sonic Colours is one of the best 3D Sonic game. I bought it and played it a few hours but it didn't really impress me. It's a good game, don't get me wrong. I know Sonic is about speed but I'd prefer if he could slow down a bit and explore the areas.
I hope I will like Sonic Boom U and that those who tried the demo only complains about lacking speed/pacing and not something else.
That said, I am liking Sonic Boom 3DS gameplay so far. It's like a 2.5D game DK: Tropical Freeze like @RoomB31 said.
No sonic for me. It feels like sonic is been changed to someone else since his last game lost world. It's not a unique character anymore. Sonic is a lab rat of gaming right now by making all this different types of gameplay and see what pops out. Plus the new voice of sonic sucks. I don't know if you guy agree with me but I prefer the sonic hero voice actor better.
The WiiU title had me excited, for obvious comparisons to SA 1 and 2 (2 of my favourite titles on DC). Now I need to see it first, I think.
This game uses pre rendered cutscenes while Rise of Lyric uses in game rendered which ironically makes Shattered Crystal look better. I don't get why Sega believes handing the development duties to western developers would make much of a difference in brand popularity. Sonic was fine before these games may not be high marks in the series
@Mega719
Handing development over to western developers makes since when it's based on a western developed tv show.
He's changed a lot since '91... but then who hasn't!
I found Generations and Lost World on 3DS to be mostly good fun, this seems to mix it up a bit too much though, with all the characters.
Sonic 4 Episode 2 was pretty good and improved a lot on the first, I'd like to see them make part 3...
For me, nothing will ever match the impact of the first game though, it impressed me in regards to 16-bit gaming as Mario 64 would for 3D platformers a few years later.
@SammytheSaiyan Yep, I'm not seeing it. It looks so slow and bland. "Oh, we have like, more than two character. Dat's never been done in Sonic before!" Except, y'know...
Oh, a tacked-on swinging mechanic. Never seen that before! So exciting.
Another year, another couple of mis-guided Sonic games. Somebody wake me when the formula actually changes.
Also, the words "adventure" and "explore" should not be used when discussing Sonic. Ever. Do developers simply not remember the Genesis Sonic games??
@brandonbwii it's not like Japanese developers were doing anything wrong, Sonic Team just has to get their heads in the game
@Ryu_Niiyama If you want a game that gets it right, I'd recommend Freedom Planet.
These two games are gonna bomb.
