I'm sorry Nintendo, but why? Why force people to use an outdated peripheral when we have this fantastic WiiU Remote, complete with display, that you could port functionality for to the Prime Trilogy? The logic kind of escapes me...

Because the game was designed to use the Wii Remote (even Prime 1 and 2 I heard got some tweeks to work better with the Wii Remote)

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

They should have included WiiU Controller functionality as a part of the games. Not everyone likes the Wii Remotes. I, personally, can't stand them. I have this handy controller that can display all sorts of neat info, and has great response times and is very comfortable to use. Last I remember, Metroid Prime was a Gamecube game to start with, and worked on Controller Technology. There is no reason why they couldn't have included controller support. If some still want to use the Wii Remotes, that's fine, but some of us prefer to play with a peripheral that doesn't frustrate the bejeezus out of us.

Then don't buy Wii games. Just stick with Wii U games and other VC games.

So far, I pretty much agree. Some PC shooters (when not dumbed down for consoles) also control really well because of the mouse. So many people seem to hate on motion controls because of the learning curve. But, for me, whenever they're implented correctly they end up being much better. It's the main reason I think Sin and Punishment 2 is one of the best on-rails shooters. You can only blame yourself for being a bad shot, not for your clunky, dual-stick controls.

Of course there are those that suffer too...like the ground sections of KI:U....ugh.

Yeah, getting the GamePad to pretend to be a Classic Controller is trivial. Getting it to emulate a WiiMote? That's a whole other thing. I suspect even the dolphin emulator dudes haven't got that down even though AFAIK they have KB+Mouse worked out. So that's the thing, they weren't going to rework an entire Wii game's controller setup just for the Wii U eShop. Especially given the reliance on it for the third game in the trilogy.

As for why they originally didn't have Classic Controller support? Well it was a Wii game released at "peak Wii". Classic Controller support was always an extra thing some games had occasionally. I mean sure it's a bit of a pain now but at the time it wasn't a huge deal at all.

I think people kinda forget that the original Gamecube version had tanky controls that are pretty outdated these days. The Wii Remote is actually a superior way to play. Just set the sensitivity to high and disable lock on free aim. It's as intuitive and comfortable as PC shooters with a KB+M.

Like previous posters said, that wouldn't really be possible because it's a wiimote-only game that runs on Wii mode. That said, they should absolutely have included classic controller support on the Wii release in the first place, which would allow us to play with the gamepad now. I got the trilogy last Friday on the e-Shop, played through the first introductory section of the first Metroid Prime, and that was it for me. Having to strain my hand to point at the TV while I play is just not the kind of thing I like to do in video games.

I remember playing this on the GC ... it's hard to put into words how much more enjoyable these games are with the Wii pointer-based control setup. It's still no M/K setup in terms of precision, but in exchange it feels more immersive and certainly fits the whole idea of actually being Samus really well, esp. considering all the efforts that went into the visor/hud and the graphical effects like e.g. condensing water.
I don't want to say people should be forced to play it this way ... no wait, that's eactly what I'm trying to say!
I just wish the game would put out a proper 16:9 fullscreen picture signal without those annoying black bars ... small issue though.

It's not even a port. It's the game's original data in a file that contains a little packaging around it that says "this file here is a Wii disk". When you load the game your Wii U effectively tricks WiiMode into thinking that that space on your HDD/Flash is the Wii disk that it needs to load.

I wouldn't mind if Retro left GCN controller support in for the first two games, but only because they were designed around the somewhat limited movablity. The pointer controls make Prime and Echoes much easier, but also more fun. But forcing Classic Controller support onto the game wouldn't do much, especially when Corruption has mandatory motion-controlled aspects (some of which are ridiculously satisfying to do).

They did make it clear the gamepad will only replicate the functionality of the classic controller. Which makes it annoying that they then went and released 3 games that don't use it.

Here's the problem most people seem to have with the Wiimote here, they think it's shoehorned in and gimmicky. This is not a waggle your way through like in Donkey Kong Country Returns. This is the way the first 2 games would be been made if the tech allowed for it then. A first person game should be played in this way as it just feels right and the response is so much more fluid and precise. Instead of complaining about it give it a go and by the end of the first game you will be saying I don't know why I wouldn't want to play the game this way.

It's not even a port, as already mentioned above. It's the original Wii disk image inside its own boot loader. A port would run natively on Wii U, while the downloadable Wii games run in Wii mode.
