Re: Best Batman Games On Nintendo Systems

Batman: Return of the Joker (NES) was and still is pretty underrated, IMO. It's not as good as Batman: The Video Game (NES), but that's a pretty lofty goal for any NES game. It does it's own thing and it does it admirably.

"Well, the reason for my comment is that one of the Wonder Boy games is a reskin of Adventure Island 1."

Adventure Island was a partially licensed port of Wonder Boy. Hudson Soft wasn't able to use the Wonder Boy names and character likenesses, thus Adventure Island and Master Higgins.

Konami holds the rights to the Hudson Soft library and intellectual properties.

My level of annoyance that licensing issues will probably prevent the NES, SNES and Genesis Batman titles from ever being re-released on a modern console is far greater than it is for any of the "thousands" of games that will seemingly become unavailable when Nintendo closes the the WiiU/3DS eShops.

I would also be way more interested in that collection than I am for the upcoming Arkham Trilogy.

Bowser was ordered to pay punitive damages to Nintendo. He was not ordered to pay a fine.

The Supreme Court has already established case law that the intent of the Excessive Fines Clause was understood to apply to fines payable to a sovereign entity (i.e. the government) and is not applicable to punitive damages payable to the victim.

As things stand, video games are likely treated as literary works, for copyright purposes, which would generally equate to a minimum copyright term of 50 years beyond the death of the author, regardless of how they were distributed.

Copyright law, generally, does not distinguish between physical mediums/publications and digital mediums/publications. More importantly, copyright protection applies both to published and unpublished works. Availability to the general public is not a necessary prerequisite to establish or maintain copyright, physical or digital. On top of that, you have a large number games that feature licensed content that falls under a separate copyright. It's a HUGE ball of wax.

Should these copyright laws and regulations be changed? Perhaps, to some extent. Will they? Unquestionably, no. Especially not for this cause. Not only will content creators and publishers, from all walks of life, lobby hard against it, but it would be nigh-impossible to get all of the necessary international agreements amended, signed and ratified by all of the participating nations (i.e. 80 - 90% of the world's nations).

I think the footage probably still exists, as a lot of it seems to be uploaded to YouTube, but there isn't going to be enough raw resolution, due to the source limitations, to bring that raw footage up to even 720P, let alone 4K.

It would be possible to rotoscope new graphics over the original footage or even the game itself, conceptually similar to what Dotemu did for Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, but that's probably the only way the original games would even begin to approach 4K and it probably brings us right back to hi res 3D models.

Not to mention Ghosts 'n Goblins and Ghouls 'n Ghosts on Capcom Arcade Stadium or Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts on NSO.

@somnambulance

Panzer Paladin's great, but I wouldn't call it a "Run and Gun". You can throw your weapons but that's not really the primary attack mechanic.

I'm not usually a fan of videogame pinball, but Pinball FX3 really does a stellar job at recreating the feel of playing an actual arcade pinball cabinet. The cost of all the DLC can add up quickly, so choose carefully, but you have access to some of the best cabinets ever produced at a small fraction of the cost for actual cabinets.
