The Cuphead Show premiered on Netflix just a few weeks ago, but fans won't have to wait much longer for a second sip, as the streaming service has revealed that Season 2 will be out this summer!
Based on the extremely popular run-and-gun game from Studio MDHR, the show honours Cuphead by capturing the goofy, skittish essence of the games. There are some fan-favourite bosses who make an appearance, too, as Cuphead and Mugman get tangled up in various antics.
The initial run of 12 episodes, which debuted on 18th February and are largely self-contained, has been getting some fairly decent reviews, with particular praise being lauded towards its score and animation. Which, again, matches the show to a tea (we're not sorry about that one, readers).
While taking elements of the early 20th century Fleischer-era animation style that the game adopted so beautifully, the show successfully (in our opinion) blends that with the manic modern approach of more recent animated classics — imagine the lovechild of Betty Boop and SpongeBob and you're not far off the mark.
We don't have any details about the upcoming new episodes, including how many are on the way. However, we do know that 36 episodes have been commissioned already.
You can find out more about the show on Netflix, including trailers and episode summaries for the first season.

Good. I just watched it over the weekend and I think they did an excellent job of fleshing out cuphead and his world and also bringing a somewhat modern story telling experience with that 80’s-90’s cartoon flow that a lot of us miss in modern cartoons.
Watched the first two episodes so far, loving the show
Thank God, this show's really, really, REALLY good.
This past weekend I was at a house party with tons of kids and they were camped at the tv watching the show. They have no idea it is a video game. So it is resonating with the audience that really matters - little kids.
Good stuff
whowouldathunk that a platformer based on retro cartoons would have gone this far? Not me.
Don't get your hopes up, this isn't actually a 2nd season. This is actually just the other half of the 1st.
This is just a way to pay their animators less. (Or at least that's what I've heard.)
Never played the game personally, but the show is a riot. The characters are incredibly charming, and they nailed the spirit of those classic 1930’s/1940’s cartoons. I kinda hope this starts a trend in animation and we can see more retro-styled series like this in the future.
Good stuff. Loved the first season. Just wish the episode were a bit longer.
@Ellie02 for a first game the quality of Cuphead by Studio MDHR is off the charts.
imho, I'd buy the game on one of it's frequent sales for the artwork and voice work alone.
@Z-Core
I've heard that a lot too, I'm more inclined to believe the animators over what corporate Netflix says.I hope they can get all of their demands met and have better a work balance. Animators everywhere deserve it for bringing us such wonderful shows. (search # NewDeal4Animation on twitter to learn more.)
After watching the whole season with that unnecessary cliffhanger, I have no interest in season 2.
I love the game, but the show dropped the ball hard. Great animation, no question about that, but the story is so... kid-ish. And that is fine, I guess. The show is clearly made for kids, but considering themes that the game deals with, I was expecting something for younger AND older demographic.
I watched the first two episodes yesterday.
I don't think I'll be watching more.
Netflix seems willing to take risks on putting new shows into production, but as soon as they actually exist out there on the service, it appears to be a hardcore numbers game. Good stuff gets axed before it has time to build a following. Ho-hum stuff gets renewed because it managed to attract enough viewers the first time around, regardless of what these viewers actually think about it.
Huh. Is it good? I saw it on Netflix but didn't watch. I just assumed it would be another generic video game show. Maybe I'll try it out.
I think three seasons were ordered a while ago
I found the show pretty boring. The first two episodes at least. At least they're only 15 minutes long.
Not a fan of how short the episodes are but the humor is generally on point.
It'd be an excellent Saturday morning cartoon, if Saturday morning cartoons were still a thing.
I loved this show! This really takes me back to the classic cartoons of the 1930s-50s which were the best! Cartoons these days are too weird
@Spunky well I got some bad news for you. Netflix is shrinking their animation departments. They are going to cut costs wherever they can to make up for their poor returns. Situation is like Cuphead will become more apparent and we’ll see a drop in quality for most animation going forward.
@MatoFilipovic My thoughts exactly. The game gave the show writers a perfect set up, to have Cuphead and mug man going around collecting the soul debts of each boss character in an effort to save their own skin. This cartoon made the devil and king dice feel less threatening by comparison. It’s all just too safe and committee driven, Cuphead needed a bit of edge.
@Noxide Oh I'm well aware! Netflix (among many companies in many industries) is experiencing Job Creep, cutbacks and higher workloads. Many new series have already experienced this season splitting technique (We Baby Bears just got picked up for a "season 2" as well) and it isn't just a Netflix thing. I'm also afraid going forward this will be the norm, in corporate efforts to maximize profits over providing a fair wage and safe working conditions to their artists and production staff. That is why it is important to speak up on these topics, the more people who know about it, the better we can affect a change! Artists create important and profound works that can bring joy to many folks, especially in such dark times as these. They deserve our support!
