I'm sure they're making good sales on account of people missing a day or two alone, and wanting to keep the chain alive. I'd bought Mana Spark a few weeks back, had no intention to buy or play any of these games otherwise.
High visibility in the eshop, sites covering this event, and people buying missed games. All a smart sales tactic to see substandard games.
"The Switch version comes with all DLC and previous updates as standard, and you can see just a taste of this action in today's brand new trailer (above)."
@Heavyarms55 Bring free certainly helps, but there's an addictive and very effective Skinner Box mindset at the core of this game, and game's like Paladins, Warframe, etc, that are all also free.
Doing dailies, and grinding for elusive limited time events, skins and items dig deep into people's brains, unfortunately, and gives those rewards way more importance than they should bear.
@MedusaMadman77 Lots of consumer material based crap is limited, this isn't just this particular at incident. That creates hype and interest, and media mentions. They could love their fans more, and charge even less. Captilism isn't about treating anyone decently, ever.
Ultimately it's boxed junk, that could be avoided altogether, and it's someone's writing, from a person you'll never even meet in person. I think questioning the value of any of this, is more relevant a question than the limited nature of it. And would you still have had an issue if you'd been one of the 500?
@BradC40 I'd say this would have been a bad pickup for him, depending on his age, more due to difficult game design, more so than the quality of the port. It's a very complex and challenging game, and is often really offputting for new users. I pushed it aside for months on pc, then delved back in and persevered.
@JasonLee99 I've played for 500 hours on pc, and this is the exact same experience here. There are issues for Ark everywhere, but fundamentally this is the same, which for me is more than enough. I'd love the game to run better on every platform, but it doesn't, and I can play comfortably portable, and do the exact same things I did on an advanced gaming pc, on the go.
@Steevil I'm at the point where these types of releases just feel abusive towards fans, more so than celebratory. I looked at the ultimate whatever box there, and with tens shipping and who knows what else, probably over $175 for a game I'll buy tomorrow and not have to worry about clutter for $20.
It's just a weird practice, as we drive closer to largely digital future, that company's then in turn produce entirely unnecessary special editions at exorbitant prices, and then hard-core fans need to go through so many hoops just to buy it.
My patience with all of this is coming to an end....
@OorWullie I'd watch a bit of gameplay videos of "Night in the Woods" before buying. I read a great deal of fan praise, then watched some, and was decidedly turned off by the games style, characterizations, dialogs and gameplay.
@NinjaSyao I supported this via Kickstarter for a good bit of cash. I think the game lacked spirit, and the level designs, as someone mentioned earlier, were maybe not concise and focused enough. I had a difficult time being engaged by it, and found it hard to jump back in time and time again.
I felt similarly towards Shantae, which I also backed....
@The_Pixel_King I agree with you on both counts. We might certainly make better decisions regarding game purchases, but at least those purchases help stabilize and create more game production, which is never a bad thing.
I bought this at $20, and even then hoped it would be $15. Which I think starting at that price would have been a much more palatable price.
@Captain_Jim Project looks really awesome Captain Jim! When the Kickstarter is launched, how much time do you feel will be needed till the game's launch?
@OorWullie I wouldn't rue your decision entirely just yet. I'm a big fan of Gungeon and Binding of Isaac, and the two times I've tried this game, the rhythm aspect didn't clock for me. Which for me, tears apart the entire gameplay mechanic. I've tried on two platforms, and this game has sadly just never clicked.
That said, does anyone have any tips to get hooked?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I met him a few years ago at an event, and he was entirely likeable and relatable. It's edited to make him appear to be a pompous, psychotic ass. Prior to meeting him, I felt the exact same way, and likely unless someone would do the same, they'll feel similarly. Such is all media and celebrity status, we never know who or how a person is until we have personal experiences, and even at that, it's a limited viewpoint.
@Fake-E-Lee Did you manage to pickup Crypt of the Necromancer? For some reason I can't seem to find the hook there either...
Given the pretty sweet twin stick games you mentioned coming up, I'd give Has Been Heroes a try. Not because it's a twin stick, it ain't, but because the unlocks after a few hours of play make the game's combo effects on enemies dazzling and rewarding. It's been on sale for $10 twice. Probably my favorite low budget release from last year.
I was really anxious to see previews and reviews, and not seeing anything at all until Game Xplain had a video, and now this review hours before launch, kinda left me in the lurch. Level design, enemy design, and even the barebones title screen design left me thinking more a pass than the preorder for that extra discount.
@Fake-E-Lee Thanks for the really thorough thoughts on Neurovoider! I did go back today, and try another run, and I think two of my main issues are enemy and player design. I don't feel much charm or interest in the artwork or design elements. And another issue I've had with the game is how the level design often hides enemies, resulting in the player baiting movement, more so than planning attacks on enemies.
@QwertyQwerty I tried watching a playthrough, after seeing the style of game that this was and reading a hit about it. I didn't care for the acidic tone and snark of Mae, and really didn't attach to any of the characters that I saw scenes from. It felt like a tv show I'd avoid.... That said, I'm the seemingly rarely person that didn't care for Madeline at all in Celeste,, despite enjoying the gameplay.
@ECMIM I tried replying to you last night, for some reason it didn't go through. I played the PC version at launch, and have had a few crashes with this Switch version, and some brief stutter on some bosses, but it's more a skill ceiling than stutter that has halted my progress. Compare this port to WWE18 in regards to slowdown issues.
I picked this up launch week, I enjoyed the AMA these two guys had on Reddit, and feel like it's a game that is close to being really solid. Ultimately didn't hook me immediately, and I haven't gone back since.....
I bought Crawl with mostly single player in mind. I gave it one run so far, and it's a definitely frenetic energy style, compared to BoI and Gungeon. There looks to be lots to do, and there's a nice polish on it, and arcade like presentation that other rogue likes don't have.
I think the internet needs less articles on her and gaming. She seems a dolt, and if she wasn't "attractive" no one would really care about her viewpoint on this game or her playing the Switch courtside at an NBA game.
I found the map, not a nice an extra as the usual Nicalis, pin/keychain kinda thing.
Game wise, there are load screens constantly, often a 2-4 second pause going in and out of a house, yet alone dungeons being 8-10 seconds. Really pulled me out of the game, given there are frustrating deaths to be had.
I've picked up every Nicalis Switch game, and this and Tiny Barbarian are kind of misses for me. Looking forward to "The End is Nigh" though...
Thanks to Nintendo Life for reaching out to Two Tribes for this article. Hopefully it will give them more exposure on their last hurrah. I've followed and enjoyed their titles over that 17 years, and thank then profusely for their unique, and always high quality games.
I spoke to the developer of this game, an Indian gent, a month or so ago on Twitter. Seemed a really earnest, and path forging kind of person. Taught himself everything he could, with only a background in programming. I'll definitely give it a go for a fiver!
@Dramlin I wasn't really feeling the hook/draw either. I bought it on release day a couple of weeks ago, and nothing was gelling with me design wise. I adore Binding of Isaac, and was happy to discover the depth in a game like that.
I really like that the Switch is getting a lot for smaller developers bringing over snippet titles like this, but man....I'm starting to get worried, as I haven't really seen but a few larger scale projects ship in the past couple of months, other than first party software. I know September will see a bit of a boon for sure, but August seems largely dry of support past these smaller games. Hopefully next August, I won't be feeling the same way. I'm just not feeling satiated on bites...
@MarioPhD Thanks again for the kind welcome! Yeah, neogaf deviates way too far into social politics, which for me helps remove the escapism and joy that I really relish about videogames.
Slime-San is really a sweet deal for $12, it's so incredibly fleshed out. And I really do hope people pick up Tumbleseed. It's control scheme is incredibly unique, and deviates so much from traditional gaming.
@MarioPhD Thanks much for the kind words friend! I'm just opening my Dr. Mario amiibo today actually!
I tried to post on gaf, but was quickly ousted. I've always browsed this site, found it really speedy with updates, and the userbase seems pretty mellow, engaging, and I'm already finding...kind. Thanks for the warm welcome!
@MarioPhD I do agree with you there. I paid $12 on Steam because I owned a prior Isaac version. I haven't gone back in a week or so, but largely that's Splatoon 2's "fault"! I'd possibly double dip, just because I like what Nicalis is doing on the Switch production wise, and I always felt they got boned trying to being Isaac out on the 3DS.
I'm a bit put off by the high contrast nature of Slime-San, but there's so much care and density to the game, that my hands forgive my eyes! Even with the color palette swaps and styles, I still find it a bit garish.
@MarioPhD From what I've played of both, The End is Nigh is more challenging immediately. The art style in both are really likable, but I felt paying $12 for both games a piece was a fair price!

And when this game launched, the developers gave a really good ama on Reddit. Seemed a good bunch of people! And check out the influence for this game, "Ice Cold Beer" if you ever get lucky enough to discover it in an arcade.

Re: Hands On: Enter The Gungeon's Physical Edition Is Sure To Brighten Up Your Gaming Shelves
@Teksetter Often depends on the publisher of both, sadly.
I bought Bit Trip Runner 3 physically, then digitally. Save didn't transfer.
I'd maybe tweet Dodge Roll Games about it.
