The only Mega Man I felt was in the bosses. The ducking abilities and overall pacing of the enemies reminded me more of Bionic Commando then anything. But since you can't jump in that game, I'll go with Contra.
@Chrono_Cross Well, since you said develop, I'll agree with that since they only developed one crappy iOS game.
But the ports? Those are great games IMO, they're just tarnished by the lazy, glitchy port jobs and immense whoring that Nicalis does. Cave Story in particular I consider a masterpiece of Metroidvania platforming, as linear as it is. VVVVVV is overrated but still fun, and NightSky is for the atmosphere moreso the gameplay I believe.
Had they published La-Mulana I'd definitely agree but they backed out in the most detestable way possible.
@Chrono_Cross How mediocre you have started is more like it. I don't consider porting to be a feat of any major greatness, even if the games are as amazing as Cave Story.
You know, I'll miss this game, and I half think that's a bullcrap excuse, but I have to respect what he said. He takes development quite seriously it seems, and doesn't want to bring lazy ports to the system (Hello there Capcom/Nicalis).
I do think he should not make that excuse and instead make a few simple changes to take advantage of the gamepad, but at the very least, he isn't being a jerk about it with the "Wii U is a toy" bullcrap we've all heard too much.
@undead_terror DLC would be awesome, but what could they add? I wouldn't want more levels because the pricing would be out of whack. Endless mode does sound reasonable though (or maybe some shallow multiplayer)
@DaveC It's better to be left wanting more then to be overextended. It's very rare that a game reaches a perfect length, so you want the former.
I'm not saying it would be cool if Zelda was 2 hours long, but this game is REALLY lengthy for a 2D platformer. Your expectations are bizarre and unrealistic.
Go play Metroid: Zero Mission. It lasts only 5 hours, and those 5 hours are definitely worth what I payed at the time. Then go do a marathon of, say, all the God of War games. It's gonna feel repetitive quite soon, even if the games are good.
And NO, I am not assuming the game will suck, but I know it's a 2D platformer, and you have to be on some good drugs to assume that a 2D platformer should last 40 hours. Name 3 2D platformers that last that long.
Case in Point: Bionic Commando Rearmed takes less then 3 hours to finish (not including multiplayer and challenge rooms) yet it's been marked in reviews as being worthy of a full-retail price. I wasn't satisfied myself with the length (though I enjoyed it loads) and I wanted more. Then I played the sequel, and I half-realized that it was a decent length after all.
Go play any of the 2D Metroid games. Some people complain that it's too confusing (with the map size and all), yet those games are consistently less then 10 hours long. This is in the vein of those games. 16 hours is great.
@HornsDino I used the super-slow circle pad controls for AoB, but honestly, this isn't so bad. As you said, it's like a laptop, or even a regular mouse. I prefer it over my fingers blocking the screen of my Galaxy S II.
If I had to complain about the design, that would be that last of it. Seemingly deliberately poor screen resolution and only one circle pad enter my mind much before that style.
This game doesn't need a remake. It still holds up well graphically today.
Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess could use remakes, along with a Super Mario compilation or some less broad-appeal games like Star Fox Assault (seriously, so much potential in a touchup of everything)
Yeah, Nintendo easily wins the customer service experience. I got brand new DSi/3DS units with all data intact twice. For free (including S&H). They offer much better then Apple (who fail to check for jailbreaking yet are still highly abrasive) and Sony (RIP first PS2)
Now if only this idea passed on to their online department.
@Philip_J_Reed Did you play it? And if so, what was your opinion? I know it has a lot of haters, and this review alone (along with some of the comments) makes it sound like you'd despise the game.
Too bad. But honestly, we'll still keep the majority of the good stuff (and hopefully someone will buy Vigil). I'm probably missing something, but all I can recall that this list lacks are the shovelware titles.
@DaveC 16 hours is incredibly long for a 2D game what are you talking about?
If you had a choice between a half-full beer, a full beer, and a bottomless beer that tastes bad after the same amount as a full beer, which would you choose?
2D games average MUCH LESS then 16 hours. In fact I bet 16 hours is a lie.
And no, you should expect 50 hours for $50. RPGs okay, but name any other game like that.
Hell, people considered NMH2 a grind because they played the original first, and both overall should take about 24 hours for (at launch) $100 not counting extra difficulties.
@FarukoSH The campaign took me about 7 hours. But add on about an hour each playthrough on all 3 difficulties and I got about 25 hours. I haven't been able to touch Raid Mode because of how bad the people online suck. Luckily my friend recently got the game so I'll see how good it is.
2 things by being short
A. A single campaign playthrough was pretty damn short. 12 is generous, I've seen an average of 7-8 hours with no known speedruns (X-Scape on DSiWare lasted me the same amount of time for a single run, probably longer and I payed half (would've payed a fifth if bought both on launch day). B. Kid Icarus: Uprising spoiled me with the slightly longer campaign and larger amount of overall content. Plus the achievements system didn't suck in KI:U.
@TheDreamingHawk Then why would you charge $3 more? You REMOVED content.
That's like setting up an ice cream stand and charging 8 bucks for one scoop, 5 bucks for 2. Pretending weight watchers never existed how does that make any sense?
Amending that, the single scoop you get sprinkles (3D), while the double scoop allows you to get unlimited refills.
Gameloft doesn't belong out of those 6 since they have a much different focus. But I get your point.
Still, for indies, it's much safer ignoring devkit price. It's the same argument you used for the Vita. It's so barren that some will simply take a shot since they'll be noticed for existing, and a good game will wow consumers.
Don't compare DSiWare. That's a failure, no set standards.
Other people have praised the eShop as well. And it'd be impossible to have as high a failure ratio unless literally ALL games on the eShop were failures.
VVVVVV is $3 less and a much better deal since you can download levels and there's a level editor.
Cave Story is the same as well as NightSky, but discounts are much more consistent.
Note that I am not saying the eShop is healthier per say. I'm just saying that the success-to-failure ratio is really high versus iOS when standards are considered.
@Bankai The people who made Cut the Rope probably didn't give a damn considering how they made loads on iOS.
I consider Wreck-It Ralph a big name, but that's beyond my point.
For every single success on iOS, there must be at least 3042 failures or some huge number. The eShop on the other hand is so empty that your game would have to
A. Look really, really bland (Nikoli games which all have numbers as images and incomprehensible names) B. Be priced awfully (Riding Stables 3D) C. You're just unlucky as hell.
@Bankai Nobody has said that yet as far as I can tell about the eShop.
But if you are willing to spend the cash on a devkit, your chances of getting noticed on the eShop are much, much higher. And there's a lack of terrible policies (unlike WiiWare)
@Bankai It's not healthier per say, but you must admit you have a much easier chance of getting paid.
With the removal of terrible policies that plagued WiiWare, people have a much better chance of getting paid due to how barren the eShop is right now. And it'll be easier for forever inevitably. You'd be lucky to sell 400 on iOS without Angry Birds or Cut the Rope or some big-name casual appeal in there.
@Pikachupwnage Like I said, I meant where it would actually fit. I'm not asking for Cave Story to have online multiplayer. I am asking for Star Fox 64 3D and Ridge Racer to though.
@CrissCross87 A. I don't know the actual price, but $20000 seems far-fetched.
B. Games with a budget under $250000 or something like that get a discount
C. Supposedly, digitally distributed games get it at no cost (might not have started yet).
All ripped from Google.
EDIT: $2500 for big-budget, $800 for small, still way too freakin expensive. But yes, games on the eShop get no-cost ratings.

Re: Iwata: 10 Key 3DS Titles On The Way This Year
Pokemon X/Y is an automatic system seller.
Now hopefully the 2 games that aren't included on the list are WarioWare, Metroid or a NEW Zelda/Star Fox
Re: Travellers Tales: LEGO City Undercover "Would Definitely Lose Something On Other Platforms"
@LordLzGlad Critical average is what I'm talking about.
Re: Warren Spector: "I'm Sad But Excited For The Future"
Outside of talking about all the job losses, nothing Junction Point made really interested me.
However, his involvement in Deus Ex automatically results in interest.
Re: Gunman Clive Developer - Core Gameplay "Heavily Based on Mega Man"
The only Mega Man I felt was in the bosses. The ducking abilities and overall pacing of the enemies reminded me more of Bionic Commando then anything. But since you can't jump in that game, I'll go with Contra.
Re: Travellers Tales: LEGO City Undercover "Would Definitely Lose Something On Other Platforms"
@Gamer83 Your expectations suck. Lower them immediately.
I can't recall a LEGO game that was that good. Most range from "mediocre" to "good with some missed potential"
Re: Impressions: Brain Age: Concentration Training Demo
1-back and 2-back were piss easy, and this is coming from a lazy high school student.
3-back was pretty freaking challenging though. Got a 76 on that compared to 100s for the others.
Also, since I looked again and saw Dr. Mario, my value of this game went up $4. Still waiting for a sale though.
Re: Travellers Tales: LEGO City Undercover "Would Definitely Lose Something On Other Platforms"
The prequel game for 3DS could probably be on Vita though. The only question is whether or not it's worth it.
Re: Review: Ikachan (3DS eShop)

@Zemus-DJ An AlphaBounce sequel would be fresh, though other DSiWare games call for sequels first (hello there X-Scape)

@Chrono_Cross How mediocre you have started is more like it. I don't consider porting to be a feat of any major greatness, even if the games are as amazing as Cave Story.
Re: Review: Ikachan (3DS eShop)
@edhe What's sadder is that that isn't all of the ports total.

Re: Gunman Clive Update Now Available In Europe
@undead_terror Sorta like the one in Mega Man 9? I actually really like that.
Re: Impressions: Brain Age: Concentration Training Demo
I enjoyed the demo, but like past Brain Ages (and BBA) I'm gonna wait for this to go on sale. I can't see myself paying $40 for this.
Re: Gunman Clive Update Now Available In Europe
@undead_terror DLC would be awesome, but what could they add? I wouldn't want more levels because the pricing would be out of whack. Endless mode does sound reasonable though (or maybe some shallow multiplayer)
Re: Review: Ikachan (3DS eShop)
@TheDreamingHawk This isn't a remake IIRC. This is a port.
Re: Review: Ikachan (3DS eShop)
@Eien1239 Nicalis has lied more then once then (Still bitter over CS3D)
Seriously, talk about the Capcom of indies.
Re: Review: Ikachan (3DS eShop)
Another lazy Nicalis port. #3 best developer alright.
And they said they were gonna jazz it up with new content. What a joke.

Exactly how much of your time spent in the game was backtracking? Is it as bad as it sounds (which it sounds like practically 90 percent)
Re: Castlevania: Mirror of Fate Will Take About 16 Hours To Suck You Dry
@DaveC tl;dr
More content isn't good when it becomes a grind, and the artificial extension of the game, or the increasing lack of inspiration shows through.

@DaveC 16 hours is incredibly long for a 2D game what are you talking about?

So yes, I say anyone with a brain will agree selling kids who are already sociopaths COD is COMPLETELY equivalent to touching them sexually.

Great game, but quite short. Hopefully this will have seriously amazing extras for the full retail price.
The 3DS version I picked up for $15.
Re: Reaction: Gunman Clive Provides a Positive Example of eShop Success
@ramstrong Sounds like your ideas would suck up the battery life.
Re: Castlevania: Mirror of Fate Will Take About 16 Hours To Suck You Dry
@DaveC This is a 2D platformer (sort of). NOTHING is going to fulfill those standards.
Go play any 2D Metroid game. All rank between 5-8 hours. Same with 2D Castlevania.
Cave Story is often recognized as being "massive" and that's 6 hours the first time.
And then actual 2D platformers like Sonic and Mario rank 4 hours or less.

Re: Reaction: Gunman Clive Provides a Positive Example of eShop Success
I wouldn't be too surprised if they made a new Donkey Kong game and put it on the eShop.
And charged $40 for it and released it as a cart.
Re: Reaction: Gunman Clive Provides a Positive Example of eShop Success
@baba_944 Yeah... Your expectations suck.
Nintendo isn't going to invest loads of money into a high-profile Mario title to release it for $10 on the eShop.
Though if we do get anything related to Nintendo franchises, KID ICARUS SPIN-OFF WITH MAGNUS AND GAOL. That would be effing awesome.
Re: Review: Riding Stables 3D (3DS)
@Barbiegurl777 I meant the reviewers, who seem to consist moreso of hardcore gamers.
Plus, $30 is really steep for a digital-only (in the US) game.
Re: Ikachan Swimming Into The 3DS eShop in North America Before February
@Knux My thoughts exactly, except replace the first game with "lazy port"
