Re: Random: AMOLED 3DS Concept Shown Off At Tokyo Game Show 2023

@reporterdavid sadly I think you are right. 3DS was imo peak Nintendo handheld. Switch is fine, but it's no 3ds. More a portable PlayStation in how it works - but still a good option for a commute gaming session, unlike the Steam Deck which almost requires a double seat booking.

Re: Train Up And Compete In Hamster's Latest Arcade Archives Release Karate Champ

@Atariboy Karate Champ was a god damn magnet where I lived. Not just a nerd magnet. All the cool kids played this thing, too. It was hard, it was karate. It was back when Bruce Lee still was an icon and a poster of him from Enter The Dragon hanging on walls of kids who probably got them handed down by their older siblings (or may even fathers). It was also for its time quite varied. And proper skill based. I never was very good at it, the twin stick controls just didn't agree with me - and my allowance back then also didn't agree, so no "git gud" on such a thing was possible :9

It is quite interesting to see that back then, when MTX WAS the name of the game, we remember the classics. These days MTX is loathed as ruining gaming. But from it's very beginnings, games have been built around MTX. This too.

Re: Review: Dark Souls: Remastered - Perfect Portable Punishment

@Rob3008 The japanese game companies have diluted the difficulty of their video games for US and European markets since the 1980s. They simply like a hard challenge where mastery is the reward, not an instant gratification factory like your modern day unlock fests. Even good old Nintendo started diluting their games to the point where you can 'complete' Super Mario Odyssey in 10 hours. Dark Souls seems to be the exception. No quarter given. To overcome its challenges is to have earned mastery, and that is the progress. They do not hand cookies out for time spent, to give you a sense of progress. Go read a book then

Re: Rumour: Switch Firmware Update 6.0.0 Seems To Limit User Upload Speeds

@stevenw45 what do you need it for? Its not as if the Switch has any kind of heavy upload demand for streaming. I played Splatoon 2, Mariokart 8 and Teniss after 6.0.0. hit - and I was not able to feel any lag at all. It was just as before.
My savegames are uploaded in about 30 seconds to the cloud, which is fine by me.

Re: Head Of Abstraction Games Addresses Technical Performance Of The Switch

@Equinox true. A lot of western games rely on certain Wow factors like ragdoll physics or other kind of highly demanding features that are only possible to fulfill by raw horsepower. But to be perfectly honest, most of these titles bore me. I tend to go for games that performs fine on the switch, and totally ignore tech heavy games.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Has Embraced DLC, But Must Resist The Worst Industry Norms

I don't like that Nintendo DLC effectively makes their cart purchases sort of half invalid. I cannot get the full Zelda BOTW game on a cart. I need a eShop account, and thus I can never sell it on (ain't gonna happen anyways) or lend it out to a friend or relative (more likely) without them ALSO having to purchase DLC.

Nintendo don't do GOTYs, unfortunately. Mario Golf World Tour also left me with a sour taste since a lot of the courses are locked behind DLC, leaving the base game feeling somewhat short and me short changed.

Re: Poll: Which is the Best Super Mario Game?

phamster

@Seacliff It is indeed fresh, but I find it so easy there is barely a challenge in it. It is more a "jump-to-reveal" roller coaster ride of instant gratifications. I find Super Mario Sunshine to be the 3d offering I love the most. And still do, in spite of Odyssey being super great. It is just not hard enough.
