As a 3D platformer inspired by the likes of Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie, A Hat in Time is the perfect candidate for release on Switch - but earlier this year, developer Gears for Breakfast posted a tweet (now removed) that suggested it would be skipping Nintendo hardware.
Things have clearly changed, as A Hat in Time has now been confirmed for Switch release. Happy days! The announcement was made today at Gamescom, along with news relating to the first DLC for the game, 'Seal the Deal'.
The Switch port doesn't have a confirmed release date as yet, nor has it been confirmed that the DLC will be available on Switch at launch, but we've been told that more info will follow soon.
Let us know if you're keen to play A Hat in Time on the move by posting a comment below.

Bet ya they're going to claim they denied it because they wanted to keep it a surprise all along. Except it's rare that a developer is openly hostile to fans about Nintendo versions. And people will defend them saying that they were harassed by Switch owners constantly about it, as if they're the only company to ever get that reaction when they don't announce a Switch version right away. All they had to do was say literally anything else other than "never" and they wouldn't have made news over them being disrespectful and rude to Nintendo fans right up to the point before they couldn't do that anymore.
The power of 20M sold consoles.
I recommend getting this. It was a better game than Mario. Way more charm and character also no forced motion controls.
I I just want Divinity Original Sin
This wasn't very surprising. Switch is selling well and Indie games are performing on the system. Does that mean the developers needed to be rude when they supposedly had no plans? No, but people also need to understand that badgering on social media won't lead to an announcement in most cases. Of course, the developer wouldn't officially announce it on that platform BECAUSE fans are asking them for a game. I'm sure they've had plans for a while, but just waited for the right time to announce it.
Soooo
Where is the guy on Twitter saying the game will sell 500k on the Switch, thus helping the game get over 1 million total sales?
@Xaessya Same!
Best announcement of the day. This'll be a day one purchase for me.
I've heard very good things.
Yes! I had been hoping for this - I’ve followed the game since its Kickstarter, but never ended up getting it on PS4...can’t wait to play it on Switch!
This is amazing, I'll definitely be double dipping on this, this was my favourite game of last year. Props to the devs for porting it despite all the pressure they got too.
Also rip Yooka-Laylee
YEEESSSS!!!!!!!!!
Man, between this and Windjammers 2, today is the day of games being announced that their devs previously denied would happen!
Great news! I've been hesitant to get it because I wanted it on Switch, but now I'll definitely be getting it.
Ahh! I'm both pleased and annoyed at this. I bit the bullet a few months ago and bought the game on Steam due to the developers stating that the game wasn't coming to Switch. The Switch would have been my preferred console for this game and I wouldn't have minded waiting for it. Oh well...
Anyway, the game exceeded my expectations in the end. Probably my favourite game that I've played this year. Any fans of 90s/early 2000's 3D platformers will be delighted with it.
From what I've read and heard I dont like the dev, so I wont be getting it.
Looks great. I’ll get it even if the dev has ice cream with chicken
Almost had me too, I almost bought it on another platform. Glad I held off, I’d rather have this on the go.
@Deadlyblack Perhaps me almost a month ago....
https://twitter.com/cruston7/status/1022553235700297729?s=19
yawn lameo ...
Better late than never!
Aww heck yess!!!
That Co-Op DLC tho... I wasn't interested at all because I literally watched every youtuber play through the thing. But the DLC and Co-Op mode is kind of a game-changer.
A Hat in Time, Windjammers 2, Grandia 1+2 HD... What a good day today!
I think it's a bit late to the party and there are far more interesting titles coming out soonish. Not to mention how it's going to have a hard time being directly compared with Odyssey.
@the_beaver I just saw the Grandia announcement and got so excited.
Grandia 2 was one of my favorite games on PS2 and I really enjoyed the first game when it finally came out on PSN a few years back.
Well, I forgive them now.
Really great news - I'm no fan of how the developers have handled their Kickstarters supporters and a lot more besides, including a near criminal handling of the Mac version - but - this is great news and the sort of game I definitely wish to see more of on Switch. I think this port will be public enough that it can't be a poor effort either. My main concern is that the PC version is ridiculously hardware demanding despite the relatively simple (but lovely) art style. That means that this company are not exactly masters of optimisation. But fingers crossed they (or the porting team) can bring it all together. All is forgiven if GfB do the Switch proud.
@Spoony_Tech So that was you!
Nice.
I’ll get this. Had it on my Mac and ran poorly. Will definitely get it though I still have plenty of Mario to move on.
Only just got this on PC last month, thinking it wasn't coming to the Switch. FFS...
This is a great game, yes. And for those who like the genre, I’d recommend it.
However, I won’t be picking it up. The relationship between a developer and the customers is important, and I was pretty appalled at how they handled the outcry for a Switch version before.
Screaming at (overeager) gamers is not the way to go. So I’m sure whoever picks it up will enjoy it, but I’m going to be passing on it.
Ahh the sweet sweet smell of making money is powerful indeed.
Finally, a good 3D platformer that isn't Mario!
A physical release would be great
@Frendo Dev loves money, clearly. But I'm not complaining
I'm not going to defend there aggressive comments on a Switch port, but then again some of the port beggers weren't calm about the situation either.
I'm glad it's coming to the console now regardless. The new DLC also looks great.
I'd preorder it today if I could.
Aside from Undertale and games from Treasure, Hat in Time is the indie I wanted on my Switch the most.
I'm surprised by this and also very happy.
The devs suck, so I will be skipping this.
Noice. May have to try it.
Nice surprise! Always thought the game looked great on PS4!
@waluigifan1 This is exactly what Waluigi would say.
Welcome home, Hat-Girl. We think you'll like it here...
@Rika_Yoshitake Personally, I believe your comment here is why they decided to just port it after all! And in my opinion, I think it deserves a spot on the console...and in my game library.
Hoping for a physical release please.
YESSSSSSSSSS
not had time to play this... and wont have time for a bi longer.
So, coming to Switch in the future is all good news.
Another game off my Steam/PSN wishlists. The new content trailer looks promising as well. As far as 3D platformers go, chances are I may get and play this well before SMO.
Whether the port has been motivated by the newly available resources/time/subcontractors (inb4 "Panic Button" XD), hardware and software sales figures or both, this is a neat surprise crowning the already eventful announcement day (This War of Mine, Everspace, Grandia dilogy, now this!). And it curbstomps the already nonexistent value and sense of the entitled meddling the fanbrained loudmouths attempted before the developer gleefully put them back in their place. Of course, fans never learn either, so this comment section is already racking up a wealth of reminders why responses like that happen and why they can be overdue as a weapon against our existence. Between the usual epithets like "disrespectful", "rude", "aggressive" and "hostile to fans" (hopefully this comment will at least educate some folks on what GENUINE hostility to fans looks like), royal gestures of "forgiveness" and other garbage that distinguishes the curse of fan love, even the generally likeminded self-distancings like @moltakfire 's (who, like many others, apparently never read the tweet thread and paid attention to how the developers replied to normal inquiries on the subject - after all, PR regulates relationships between developers and other people, not between developers and fans) come across as welcome news.
(Even despite the game simultaneously risking to get yet another fan in me instead. SML /)_-) )
Nintendo fans: Give us a Hat in Time.
Gears for Breakfast: Sorry, it can't be done. Hope you understand
Nintendo fans: A Hat in Time Switch!
Gears for Breakfast: Sorry, no.
Nintendo fans: Put it on Switch, lazy devs!
Gears for Breakfast: OKAY, STOP. HERE, JUST TAKE IT. GOD.
But seriously, it was pretty appalling to me the way Nintendo fans acted towards these guys. When they said no, you should have been able to understand. The game not coming to the platform does not make them lazy. Are you serious?
They put in the extra work to make the other two console versions in addition to the PC game and launched it simultaneously.
For the people who waited patiently or played other games in the meantime, I hope you'll appreciate and have fun with the Switch version.
For the others who are salty and can't get over it, have fun missing out. You don't really deserve it anyway.
I recently got this on PC and just 100%'d it right out of the gate. Its short but it was worth every second.
...honestly, its how i wish odyssey would have been.
edit: the typos. the misuse of words. my ego.
Got it on Humble Monthly, but I may have to pick it up again on the Switch.
Absolutely loved it when it released on Steam last year. Game's awfully short, but still a tight package all around, especially with the DLC coming soon.
i thinks its time, developers can't ignore the switch anymore.
proof that sofware sales figures are doing above average.
the switch is a heaven for any indie developer. i honostly dont think beside pc their is any place better then releasing your indie game on switch.
looking at myself i already own much more indie titles then on my ps4 and xbox one.
@Snaplocket
they can't ignore the popularity of the switch indie scene anymore.
so they probably dont mind
Still salty towards them for their treatment of Nintendo fans, especially since their game is such a N64 throw back. That and the short length of the game will have me sit out, but never say never.
@Rika_Yoshitake with your profile gif... You could say 'let that sink in' haha made me laugh
Oh, I remember this game now! It was the game I stopped caring about because it seemed like it was never coming to consoles. Maybe I'll give it another look?
Watches Trailer
Huh. Seemed a bit tame until the DLC content. That actually sounds rad, and might alleviate the lack-of-content problem I see people had with it (reminds me of Yooka-Laylee there, too. Yeesh...). If the DLC is available on the Switch version, that'll be the version I get. Otherwise, it looks like I can just pick it up on the PS4 when it comes out on...September 13th?!
Gears for Breakfast said in the official A Hat in Time Discord server that “the DLC will not be coming to consoles.”
I have no plans to buy this on Switch, and their never will be.
Already got this on PS4. It's full of some neat ideas, but feels really unfinished. Still, I had more fun with it than I did Yooka Laylee, so there's that.
@Morph The twitter guy never said anything rude, he was always just clarifying that there were no plans for Switch (obviously that changed, but the point is, he wasn't rude)
But you might be talking about the developer Jonas Kaerlev (MekuCube). Well firstly, he is a single developer in a entire team, when buying this game you wouldn't be supporting just him. Secondly, his bad actions were made in 2012, 6 years ago, in 6 years things can change, and they probably changed. Nowadays there is no real evidence that Jonas is doing anything like what he did back then, quite the opposite, he is actually a pretty nice guy on the A Hat in Time discord. He answers questions, he chats and he also helps the modding community (fixing bugs in some cases).
@AlternateButtons "There was always zero excuse for this NOT to come to the Switch". There WAS an excuse though: Nintendo Switch is not compatible with UE3. It's common misconception that because Switch has UE4 support it would support UE3, but that's not the case, the two engine "versions" are actually very different and adding support to one wouldn't automatically result in support for the other.
And yes i know, Rocket League was also an UE3 game and it got a Switch version, but that game got an dedicated porting team.
As for the current situation, nobody really knows why a Switch port is now possible, it's possible that they hired a dedicated team to port htis game too.
Also you're talking about what the guy that runs the AHiT twitter said. One thing you're not considering though is that he is not the only guy involved in the developer team, so you're calling an entire developer team lazy (when quite literally, they made one of the best kickstarter 3d platformer games in recent years) because of what a single guy said.
Also the fact that he was directly stating that a Switch version would never come might actually hint there was a disconnection between his words and what Gears For Breakfast actually had in mind.
Anyway, don't call an entire team greedy and lazy because of the actions of a single guy.
@HollowGrapeJ Ya, if you stop asking they will do it. Woman only had to ask once in order to have the right to vote. The conlonist asked once to be free from England's rule. Slaves just asked to be free and they were right. If you ask one time and they say no it's not going to help to keep asking. You make no sense.
Yay! I may actually buy this now...
What was the point of that fiasco that happened a few months back? If you're gonna say something, stick to it.Or better yet. Think before you act.
@CanisWolfred They also said, even extremely recently, that the game would never come to Switch. So...
I have a hard time believing the DLC won't hit the console versions at some point.
Woo! One of my favourite games is coming to da switch!
(It the most paper mario-e non paper mario game I’ve played!)
I remember being interesting in this game, but got the impression that the developer is a jerkoff. So I don't think I'll be getting it.
@nhSnork I’d rather you not use me to try and make a point for yourself. I’m happy that you’ll enjoy the game, but don’t be a douchebag.
>Nintendo Fans "Put it on switch." Waaaahh
>also Nintendo Fans "You're only putting it on switch because it's the best, sold a lot and you're a sheep. I was never gonna buy your game anyway."
Don't release on Switch, gets harassed non-stop. Release on Switch, gets hated anyway. I don't envy indie developers...
I bet it was 1. a technical hurdle they managed to overcome now (they said it was something about this game being on Unreal Engine 3 and it's 4 that has Switch support) and 2. long enough after Mario Odyssey not to feel as threatened by it. The timing of those games was pretty unfavorable for Hatty Time.
I love A Hat in Time! I'll buy it on the Switch and pick up the DLC on Steam for free.
@Morph that be a shame, you’re denying yourself a quality game.
@ReaderRagfish do you need gracious or do you need A Hat In Timefor Switch?
When I heard of this yesterday, I hit up NL's report on he game NOT coming to Switch, and lo and behold, the Tweet on the subject was no longer embedded, as it no longer existed.
Det er ok Jonas, du behøver ikke dække dine spor. Glæder mig til at se det køre på Switch.
@Prizm
Then there's probably a lot of your favorite movies you ought to retroactively unsee as well.
Kidding aside though, the guys at Gears for Breakfast are only really guilty of being a bit PC elitist, and not really feeling up for mingling with other developers here in Denmark. Unless 'not removing Jontron's voice' is also to be considered an offense.
Great game for those who haven't played it yet! I'll be sticking with my PC copy unless they can get the Switch version running at 60fps and a physical copy.
@waluigifan1
Mario Odyssey forced you into motion controls? My copy didn't, they were completely optional
@TurboTEF
Hopefully by computer, you mean laptop otherwise it's going to be pretty hard to play this great game on the commute to work
@steventonysmith
That's what Mario Odyssey is for. If a 3D platformer can't run at 60fps on Switch and I can play it at 4k/60fps on my PC, then its not worth my time or money else where.
I only play my Switch docked (on my 2nd monitor) or on the toilet as it is, so multiplats on Switch are kinda worthless to me.
I hope you enjoy the game!
@Ralizah I noticed that, but that just makes them habitual liars, and that ticks me off, too. Like I said, I already gave up on them years ago because they kept saying it wouldn't come to consoles. If they're just doing it to drum up more sales of the PC version when they're game is clearly trying to bank on old-school console nostalgia, by lying about future content, then to me that shows a stark disconnect between the game's creators and their intended market. At this point why should I even bother giving them my time, money, and attention to see if they'll change their minds later down the road? I know I've said that about Capcom...and yeah, sometimes when Capcom goes back on their word, it's too little, too late, and everyone else has moved on. People got better things to do, that's why the non-commital or open-minded responses are the better option, if flat-out honestly is still somehow out of the question. Unless we get a better explanation soon, I'll just move on.
@ReaderRagfish
I know, right? I remember them sounding a bit rude about it, as if they had something against Nintendo. Now they're saying they ARE releasing it for Switch? I guess the dollar signs must have gotten to them.
@Pod - Declining to buy an indie game will have more impact than choosing not to watch a blockbuster movie. Although there are some actors I prefer not to pay money to see because they are jerks.
@Varelius how short are we talking about? If it is less than 20h+ I will probably skip it
@Prizm
I think my point was more in line with your reason for not buying the game being silly to begin with. You don't know Jonas Kærlev, and if you'd hold off from buying Hat in Time because of his appearance of "being a jerk", I think it more likely that you're looking for a way of explaining your already lacking interest in the product.
@moltakfire a douchebag is the only thing I am and can ever be towards fans, but I only tagged you because I intended to address your point directly and doing it separately risked more redundancy rakes than my comments already tend to step on. I condemn your inner fan's stance and I pointed out the flawed argumentation that permeates it, but at the same time I commend your human self for consciously staying away from the work altogether as a result (even that much can be painfully rare) just like I commend the tweets discussed for achieving this outcome.
You're free to view it as backhanded, although it's not meant as such - just like your own well-wishing wasn't, I assume. Even though, like I said in the previous comment, me enjoying the game isn't such a happy prospect when it risks making me a fan of the game myself.
@nhSnork Hah, I see. Well, as long as you're not insulting others for what they believe in, I have no problems! I may be missing out on a rather great experience, but my personal morals trump my wants at the time.
@Balta666 7 hours. about 12 or so to do all of it.
its still worth checking out if you can afford it at a cheaper price. i didn't get it for 30, but its definitely one of those games where you just smile all the way through.
It is not that I cannot afford it but by a principle a game that is that short I won't pay over 15£
Told ya!
