Re: Soapbox: Switch Is Only A Classic Or Two From Being The Perfect PlayStation History Lesson

Used to own and love PS1 from 1996 to 2007. It's great to see classic PS games on Switch (actually, playing Crash Bandicoot on the road was the reason I bought a Switch in 2018, only after completing all three Crash Bandicoots fifteen more times I decided to check out what's that "Zelda" all the cool kids on Nintendo forums are talking about), and what's really missing here are first five Tomb Raiders. AFAIK, THQ Nordic currently has the rights to it, and these guys previously did good work (Darksiders 3 and SpongeBob Battle for Bikini Bottom come to mind).
However, I'm fine with some PS1 games missing if there are "inspired by" games that fill this niche. As the article points out, no SotN here, but also no shortage of SotN clones here, so ok then. Same for Twisted Metal - I love TM2, but I loved CelDamage HD even more, so it checks this particular box.

Pity, it looked interesting. However, I'll go and check Youtube for what it has to say about this game (tool?), and if it improves in future, then the mighty YT algorithms, may their benevolent wisdom shine upon us, will recommend it to me again.
About "hit or miss" community content part of review - it's called Sturgeon's law, and in user generated content this law is always in full force.

Re: Talking Point: What Would You Want To See In A 'Mega Man 12'?

milvus976578

I like Mega Man style gameplay, but not a die hard fan of the franchise itself, so if there's another game that's "Mega Man but better", I'll play it instead of waiting for a new "proper" Mega Man game. I played both Mega Man 11 and Mighty Gunvolt Burst at the same time and found the latter to be "Mega Man but better". So I would give Mega Man 12 a try if it takes some notes from MGB.
Pixel art (MGB's pixel art is a thing in itself, while MM11's art looks cheap, generic and dated), fully customizeable custom weapons, different playstyles (no matter if different characters, or Mega Man only, but with different abilities). No lives system please, it oustayed its welcome long ago. Chiptune music - YES, all of it, in my face, OMNOMNOM. Maybe a separate roguelike mode a la 20XX.

Re: Poll: Do You Call Handhelds Like Game Boy And Nintendo DS 'Consoles'?

milvus976578

In Eastern Europe everybody literally calls any console "addon" ("pristavka"), handheld or not. So if anyone happens to talk about SNES Play Station, it is jokingly called "an addon for addon" ("pristavka k pristavke").
And yes, there are home consoles and handheld consoles. One may call the latter "handhelds" for short, but they stop being "consoles" because of it.

I just have to disagree with all the cons:

  • "A toy, not a game" - duh, it's not like eshop description promised HARDCORE ACTION PUSHING TO YOUR LIMITS
  • "Fiddly controls if you’re trying to be precise" - nope, a combination of two sticks and zooming in and out works wonders. Takes one minute to adjust to it
  • "All towns pretty much look the same" - yes, but it's Scandinavian style, it's still a breath of fresh air if all you see every day are some other (cough cough Eastern European cough) styles

"As you know, on this side of the Wall
We are Yooks,
On the far other side of this Wall
Live the Zooks"
Then my grandfather said:
"It's high time that you knew
Of the terrible, horrible thing that Zooks do.
In every Zook house and in every Zook town
Every Zook eats his bread
With the butter side down!"

Re: Soapbox: I'm Tired Of Ports And Remakes - Where Are All Nintendo's New Ideas?

milvus976578

I owned a PS1 in the late 90s, and for me it was The Ultimate Console because it had lots of ports. Ports of games that were several years old already and were previously available only on specific machines, now all came gathered under one roof of PS1 and made shinier, because devs had time to fix post-release bugs. PS1 had the library of, as we say today, Definitive Editions of older games, and that's why so many people, myself included, loved it.

And currently the same thing is happening to Switch. You want new 1st party big budget titles, shiny and chrome? Check. Fancy an indie game with truly original concept? eshop is your friend. Something proven from several years ago? Yup. Link's Awakening that knows gamepads today have more than two buttons? Under different name, but yes, we have that too. One Console to Rule Them All indeed.
