It's not about games being good or innovative. It's about industry. As with other industry awards, this reflects that Nintendo isn't a strong brand in UK as Sony or Microsoft are.
I think there are two ways of releasing this game in America / PAL regions. 1- They go the niche / special edition way. Something similar to the Last Story release on Wii. 2- They go the download only way.
These industry prizes (any industry), in general, are political. They are not judging the games themselves. They are judging them in context with industry. Nintendo has it's share of players, but, they are not the mainstream on the gaming industry. The so-called hardcore gamers like to think they are an elite of refined gamers, but in fact they are the mainstream of the gaming industry. The hardcore games are the games that often stay on the top of the charts. So, these prizes are focused on them.
I played the original Cave Story on PC. Then, bought and played it again on WiiWare when it was released. Then, I got Cave Story+ on Steam from a Humble Bundle. I think I'll skip this time.
From this week I'll eventually get the NSMB 2 DLC. I don't have the game yet (shame on me =P), but I'll get it in a near future (when i finish beating my 3DS backlog).
As @AlmightyDerek said, this statement was made from a business point of view. As Dreamcast, and other consoles before it, Wii U may or may not set the trends for the next generation of consoles. I'm not talking about horse power. Wii, love or hate it, set the trend for motion gaming. Every console received a motion controller after the Wii Remote. Xbox 360 set the standard for online gaming and download service.
I was wating the La-Mulana remake on WiiWare since it was announced. Bought it on PC day one. Now I'll buy it again, day one! And the release date couldn't be better. 20th september is my birthday. =)
@theblackdragon I didn't think about the two tablet limit of Wii U and multiplayer games. This is a good use for the pro controller. And I agree with you that one can not say that Activision specifically demanded the pro controller without proof. I wasn't exactly pointing at them. I was thinking about big developers in general.
I can't see this Wii U Pro Controller as something other than concession to third parties.
The original Wii needed the classic controller for VC games and games that didn't fit the Wiimote scheme. But for Wii U, apparently, the original tablet controller can do everything the pro does, with the added screen in the middle to extra functionality.
IMHO, it's almost like to have a DS and play it with one screen covered or making a new DS with only one screen so thirdies could do lazy ports without worrying with the other screen.
I wish to add Batman: Return of the Joker (NES) and The Adventures of Batman & Robin (SNES) to the list. Both are great games and Return of the Joker is a technical achievement for the NES.
I see a lot of people complaining about the lack of internal HD or support to external ones. I don't see the point. On X360 or PS3 (as people tend to compare), the internal HD is used to install games (retail and download) , store music and movies. As WiiU will not serve as media center and retail games will not be installed on the HD, only downloadable games will use storage media on the console. Assuming that the average downloadble game will use about 1GB of storage space, one 32 GB SDHC card will hold about 30 of them. I think it's a fair number.
@VintageBoy said: "I played the demo, honestly I wasn't all impressed. Don't get me wrong - Rayman Origins is a phenomenal game, and if you can't pick it up on another platform then you should definitely get it on this. The problem is, the game is considerably better on the other platforms. The graphics retain their fluid animation, but the price for this is downscaling the quality. Add to that that it seems to be a direct port of a game designed for 1080p (1920 pixels wide) shrunken down to a screen 400 pixels wide. As a result, Rayman et al are tiny onscreen and there's a considerable blurriness to the art. Some larger graphics actually look quite badly JPEG'd. The 3D effect is nice, I'll say, but this game in HD (or even just simply bigger at 480p the Wii) on the other consoles is better."
Exactly my opinion about the game. I played the demo, liked the game, found the 3D effect good, but, Rayman and the other characters are so tiny. You just can't see the details on the characters and scenario.
It woulde be great if this controller could show messages and notifications while Wii U is in stanby mode. It would be great too if it could be used in a similar way as an alarm clock while the console sleeps and it's at the dock. The alarm clock software could be something similar to Mario clock on DSiWare.
I do not live in UK and went there only once in my lifetime. When I was there, I got the impression that Sony and PlayStation as brands are very strong in UK. I think this and the whole GAME bankruptcy thing an it not carrying or giving enough shelf space for Nintendo systems games are affecting the sales.
@mikeman-m That's what I think. In 10 years this version will be sold for a small fortune on eBay. People who whined about it now will brag about having a collector's item.
The problem here is: How Nintendo can patch a game that is burned in a cartridge?
If the game was installed on the console (like PS3, X360 or a download game) would be easy to make a patch and make its install mandatory to play online. I suppose the tiny catridge is read only, with a small read/write space for user data.

If it plays the same way Atari 2600's Dechatlon used to, it will break your DS and give you a repetitive strain injury.

@Burning_Spear I guess the same.
Between many things, I keep imagining that radar thing on the Wii U's controller screen.

Re: Feature: How 3DS Brings a New Dimension to the DS Family
This:
"Nintendo eschewed current-day technology in favour of finding a unique angle and putting it forward in old technology."
Since the times of late Gunpei Yokoi Nintendo thinks this way. The Game & Watch series and classic Game Boy were designed with this in mind.
