While Dragon Quest X for Wii U was shown off recently during a Japanese Nintendo Direct broadcast — though it's already been released on Wii in the Land of the Rising Sun — Square Enix hasn't yet finished re-releasing earlier entries in the series. According to JUMP magazine, at least.
A scanned page from the latest issue, pictured in this article, shows what seems to be confirmation of Dragon Quest VII for 3DS, and a Japanese release in February 2013. This title was originally on Sony PlayStation — called Dragon Warrior VII in North America — but Square Enix has previously released Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride and Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation on DS, so it seems like a logical progression. Both of those DS releases also made it to the West, so there's certainly hope that this one will make it outside of Japan in the future.
Are you excited about the prospect of a Dragon Quest VII on 3DS?
Thanks to uximal for the tip.

Who didn't see this coming?
Definitely! I hope this makes it to Europe. >_<
@square-enix what? You don't want my money?!?!?!?!? Stop milking the portable & give us a real console rpg not that Dragon quest MMO scam!
DO WANT!
Hmmm...should I be excited for this one or not?
As a person who never played DQVII - (and who just finished DQV), I'm extremely thrilled at this news!!!
I was hoping the remake with VII in the title would be this one.
As good as bought.
I might even pre-order it which is really rare for me. I've been waiting for this since DQ VI came out.
I'm happy
OMG this is good news. I hope we see it here in North America such a beautiful game and my Favorite Playstation 2 title just great!
@Jon_Talbain Blind people.... Having said that, I bought V and enjoyed it so I'll definitely keep an eye (or both) out for this.
Wait so if Square-Enix is still making Dragon Quest remakes on Nintendo handhelds wouldn't that mean we might be getting a remake of Dragon Quest VIII? Either way, I'm looking forward to trying out this title.
Ok I made a mistake I was thinking Dragon Quest VIII but this will be c ool also looking at Youtube Videos
Hm...if this is the case that means VIII is next in line.
Release this and DQM: Terry's Wonderland 3D in Europe and I'll buy a 3DS. It's simple as that.
Honesty the picture scares me.
i love dragon quest....think it would look awesome in 3D....can't wait to hear it announced for the west maybe at e3 2013
Knew this since they revealed a DQ for 3DS back in 2010, and VIII will come soon after
I don't believe this DQ ever made it to Australia, I hope it gets localized for all of PAL, I already own V VI, IX, Joker and Joker 2 on ds and they're all brilliant games.
Awesome news, I love Dragon Quest VII, I'm glad the series is coming back on Nintendo's consoles. Now all we need are remakes of DQ1-3, and DQ8 for 3DS and the main DQ series will be complete.
Cool! Though i still need to pick up VI.
(by the way, the article mentions that V and VI were released for DS, but you forgot that IV was also released for DS)
It's about time. Hopefully we see VIII follow.
Sure, I'll bite. It's been a while since I played the PS1 release.
Now, if you can give us a FF VI remake as well...
DQ VII, DQM:TW and DQH:RS 3? Yes, please.
I'll be happy if they announce they're remaking FF V/VI for the 3DS.
I wonder if 8 is going to be on 3DS or Wii U
I also hope we get FF VII
Wouah!!!
I would buy it.
YES!!!!!!!!!
i remeber playing this on playstation once but what i dont remeber is if i ever beat it but i do know i liked it i think
so this is day one buy if it comes to canada/unitedstates
OH YEAH!!! Was trying to finish this game on PSX Emulator on my PC since i haven't had the chance to finish this on the PSX console as when i'm about to finish this, My PSX died (RIP). The feeling of Great Anticipation starts NOW!
I sincerely decided to get a 3DS just because of this.
YES!!!!!!!!
I dont think I need to say how happy I am about this. Or at least I would be if Sqeenix decided that the west was good enough to get the Dragon Quest 3DS games...we're still waiting just for confirmation that Rocket Slime 2 and Terrys Wonderland 3D will even be coming out here. :/
Loved DQ 4 and 9 on DS so really happy about this! European release please!
Man, I love Akira Toriyama´s artwork.
I will buy this it reminds me of 9. I loved nine but i couldn't beat the final boss though.
Oh heck yeah!!! I missed out on the original when it came out on the PSOne but I am really psyched for this remake. Should be glorious in 3D. Cannot wait for it!
Great news for the 3DS.
I obsessed over IX, pouring literally over 1,000 hours into it.
So you can guess I'm excited.
Looking forward to the eventual release by Nintendo.
The final "good-looking" DQ. V was the best IMO, but I'll get this, as the battles are always addictive.
I'll totally buy it.
Insta buy for me. My parents would be confused though... I have Dragon Quest IX for the DS, I used to have Dragon Quest IV on the DS, I also used to own Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2, and now I'm getting Dragon Quest VII.
"kyuubikid213! Why are they making the games in the reverse order?!"
"They're remaking the game, Dad, not making a new one!"
@TheNintendOtaku Been wondering about that for a while now...
This is a day one buy for me if they release it in NA. I found IV to be a great concept, poorly executed. V, on the other hand, remains one of my favorite JRPGs. I still have the DS remake of VI waiting here. Some day...
@DrKarl How was IV poorly excecuted?
YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!! Now all I need to do is buy VI and beat V and hope that holds me out until when ever this game comes out.
Do want. But I would much prefer news of a DQXI that isn't an mmojrpg hybrid thingy like DQX is.
The only Dragon Quest I don't own. I didn't really like VIII but this one will probably be amazing in 3D with updated graphics and gameplay.
I've had the Playstation version forever, but never got to finish it due to my first gen PS2 no longer playing PS1 games. Now I get a chance to finish it.
btw, for those who don't know or are on the fence, this is a really great DQ title. Not only are there various worlds, but also a lot of other places and events that radically change as you progress. Probably one of the better storytelling RPGs out there that now a wide variety of DQ fans will have an easier chance of playing.
Sounds good I've been wanting to play this one, hopefully we see Terry's Wonderland get localized.
OMG! This must come to this side of the globe!
Now... about Final Fantasy VII........
I hope you'll be able to DL this, we need more 3rd party games on eShop
Awesome, can't wait!
youre telling me that the deepest dragonquest arrives as a port on 3ds and not expect me to be happy ????
best gaming news for 2013 to me !!!!!!!
this game really marked my soul, cant wait to do it again !!!
Oh the Dragon Quest i missed, certanly a single player DQ will be appreciate here in europe.
By me especially.
Makes sense that they never put it on PSN
@Samholy
Can't agree more buddy.
@Jon_Talbain
The chapters were great fun, but I found the uncertainty of when they would end detracted from the experience. In 2 of the chapters, I thought that there was going to be more to do, only to have the rug pulled out from me unexpectedly.
V has some of this as well, but I thought that they struck a very good balance. The unexpected turns in plot worked for the game, and not against it. Opinions differ of course. My friend set V down for a month after one of the plot twists, as it really rustled his jimmies.
@DrKarl Funny, I never found those changes unexpected. Then again, I knew beforehand that the chapters weren't self-contained, and would always end with a cliffhanger until they resolved them all in the final chapter. Otherwise they were extremely varied gameplay-wise, creative story-wise (for an NES game), and very well-paced. I'd actually say Chapters of the Chosen is my favorite DQ game.
No surprise really.
@MeloMan
Didn't Square Enix already said that they won't remake FFVII until they could make a new Final Fantasy game that could surpassed the original FFVII in sales or something? We probably won't be seeing a remake of that game until SE choose not to be lazy and greedy.
Actually, they said that they'll only remake Final Fantasy VII when the series is literally dead.
I am half-way happy that this is coming, the fact that I cannot play my PS1 anymore has a factor in that... and halfway ENRAGED that they are remaking Dragon Warrior VII...
Simple enough, this is the last game before Enix merged with Square and started making all the mistakes that they did with DQVIII. They switched all the spells to new names that make little sense. What does "Squelch" do? Why name it that?... Well that is the Japanese version's sound effect for that sound. Truthfully. They changed the spell "Antidote" into "Squelch". Forgive me for hating that. Also, they added the weapon tiers to DQVIII. This meant that a character was limited to only certain spells/abilities. This was edited slightly in DQIX but still relied on weapons equipped and stuff. In this game, you were able to train in a field and carry all that into the next field.
I really hope that they do not BUTCHER this game further than the spell names. That alone will make me cry... but if it is only that, I would be willing to download if it was only available as such. (Of course if it is a hard/cartridge copy it will be auto ).
@CanisWolfred - I thought the FF series was dead. The brand is just being used for easy revenues. Perhaps they meant once that no longer worked?
