@samuelvictor I'm sure that's true, though I suppose I'm focused on the games I've played most, and remember the most fondly. Of those, I tend to always prefer the GG stage differences in every way other than screen size. Things like the first boss in sonic 2 having variety in the cannon ball bounces, or the shortcut in the toy level in Castle of Illusion being hidden by a fake wall- just a couple differences off the top of my head.
Land of Illusion was an absolute gem. I probably wouldn't even want to know how many times I played through it as a kid. That, Sonic Triple Trouble, and Dynamite Headdy, got far too many playthroughs from me. I know Dynamite Headdy has a far more elaborate Genesis version, but the short stages of the GG version were an absolute joy to blaze through, and each stage was so different and weird that it was sort of like the closest thing to a WarioWare game that I had back then. I also played a lot of Earthworm Jim, but the GG version of that was... oof... it was such a pale imitation of the Genesis version, and there's absolutely no reason to touch either over the Special Edition today.
I grew up with a Game Gear, and yes, while there are some fantastic games for GG/SMS... there really aren't that many that are still worth playing today. Having gone back and played a large number of GG games, as well as their SMS versions, the GG versions are generally superior, but suffer from screen crunch. What I mean is the stage designs on GG will feel a little more thoughtfully designed, as if the designers got in a touch more polish before shipping the GG version, but it's still hard to recommend anyone play that version over the SMS version where you can see far more of the stage at a time. At any rate, I do still go back to some of these from time to time; mostly the Sonic games, Dynamite Headdy, Land of Illusion, and Deep Duck Trouble. Also for anyone curious, that emerald in Sonic 2's Sky High Zone can be gotten without the hang glider. There are sections of clouds that you can walk on, as well as small diamondish-shaped clouds that act as springs, and with some trial and error, you can jump and bounce your way to the emerald.
Promising in theory, but it looks lifeless. The problem with Sonic was never that it didn't look enough like Just Cause or Crysis or any other game focused on delivering cutting-edge "realistic" graphics.
Why do the fans understand how to handle Sonic better than Sega? Too many cooks in the kitchen. Same reason video game movies are so horrible in general.
Yeah bit of misinformation here! While it's not mentioned in the project page (so far as I could see), a direct response from the team claimed the display was actually only 720p, with "simulated 1080p" whatever that means... sounds horrible. There was also no mention of the display response time, which I'd quickly assume means this thing is adding noticeable lag via a low quality display. That may not be true, but if so, why aren't they telling us?
Yep the art direction completely killed my opinion of this one. The choppy and stiff 2D animation makes the movement look slow and clunky. The flag checkpoint system sounds like it was pulled straight from Cloudbuilt, where it made a lot more sense as you could pick your own routes and attempt crazy shortcuts, whereas Demon Turf appears to be linear. It sounds as though the combat should have been entirely optional outside of bosses, along the lines of Super Mario 64 or A Hat in Time. I may give this one a shot at some point, as I absolutely love a good platformer, but I haven't seen anything here that looks like anything beyond a cheap imitation of better games.
I love the watching the Macho Nacho YouTube channel's mod videos, but I think this would have made more sense as a mod for the original GBA (adding a backlight mod while they are at it). The SP, in my opinion, was already the best version of the Game Boy as is (short of the missing headphone jack), and this mod ruins the convenient form factor. Then again, was it that much of an inconvenience to just put the game in the Gamecube's Game Boy Player if you want to continue your game on a TV?
I've been playing this on Game Pass. It's ridiculous and fun. Looking forward to roping a friend into trying 2 player. Seems like a rather short game though (2-5 hours according to howlongtobeat.com), but some things are better when they don't overstay their welcome.
Still disappointed that 3D All-Stars didn't include the SM64DS additions. Would love to see a new definitive addition along the lines of the 3DS Zelda Ocarina and Majora remakes. And yes, I agree with people who are saying that Mario World is a better game, however, I disagree that it was a better launch title. World perfected 2D Mario, but it did not introduce people to a brand new dimension in gaming. It did not showcase the SNES hardware in a groundbreaking way that would go on to inspire other developers to explore and mimic this brand new type of game. World was a perfect followup to Mario 3, but SM64 truly introduced players to a whole new world.
Surprised to see so many comments saying they prefer the GG/SMS Sonics to the Genesis/Mega Drive games. That said, I also vastly prefer them. I didn't get the chance to play the 16 bit games until many years after I'd mastered every single Game Gear game, and honestly, I was disappointed by how "style over substance" they were compared to the 8 bit games. Needlessly large areas with very little danger (or cheap death traps the player needs to memorize) did not leave a good impression. Actually, it may be that the 8 bit era in general spoiled me so much that that's why I don't have the fond memories of all those needlessly "massive" games and the collectathons like Banjo Kazooie. They were so comparatively mindless and boring.
I've been using one for about 2 years. (perfect sort of thing to ask for as a gift when you're the sort of person that generally buys things they want instead of making a wish list)
I like it! It's definitely meant for modern games, no reason to use it for retro or pixel art games in my opinion. I notice a difference in the image quality when playing switch games on a 1440p display.
This is mainly an upscaler and anti-aliaser that does a few other things to the image as well. Tiny images do not do it justice. Shrinking and compressing screenshots for a website basically undoes the vast majority of what this thing is doing. Linus Tech Tips on Youtube did a good review on them a while back.
To the few people trying to troll or just not giving it any thought, while I'm not seeing a lot of details here as to how it's being done, it sounds like this is probably just a program or mod built off of or added to an emulator, not too unlike RetroAchievements. Assuming it is distributed without including the games, there's no reason Nintendo should or even could do anything to stop it.
@Arawn93 I wasn't making any sort of statement about the um... game-emulating community? I only took issue with the phrasing that suggested that you had to pirate the game if you wanted to mod it, which is absolutely not true.
Just want to point out that you don't "need to resort to...piracy" to do this, just emulation. You can absolutely take your own copy of the game and rip it yourself- there's no need to bring maritime larceny into it.
I remember picking this up on PC back when Cube World's demo left so many people eager for more. Trove was a clear attempt to copy Cube World's aethetic, but without actually providing worthwhile gameplay. Neither of these games turned into anything worthwhile. This one is fun for maybe an afternoon. I haven't touched it in years, but back when I tried it, it was just an absurd pointless and repetitive grind that they would occasionally update to add more layers of grind to. A very transparent attempt to get people to pay them far more money than their lazy game is worth.
Totally makes sense to see this after Windwaker and Twilight Princess got rereleases on the wii u. Will thoroughly enjoy playing through this one again, especially with my pro controller rather than a wiimote that needs fresh batteries ever 30 minutes for the motion controls to work properly. Hopefully the other games will be ported before long too now that they've caught up on ports... or maybe we'll see Link Between Worlds HD next?
Now that 3D World is out, I'm more than ready to at least know the title of the next Mario. Or hey, maybe we could get a Zelda All-Stars for the anniversary? A new teaser for Metroid? Would be happy to see Kid Icarus Uprising jump to Switch, or some of 3DS remakes get a further upgraded Switch version. Nintendo has just no end of easy options for games to fill out this year's lineup.
@gaga64
True, and 2008 was when Earthworm Jim 1, 2, and 3D appeared on GOG as well. But way back then Interplay still had publishing rights of the IP, which it presumably sold when it sold off its remaining IP in 2016. Wikis are only so helpful, but it makes sense to assume that Double Helix or Foundation 9 bought the Earthworm Jim IP from there, allowing them to start production of the Amico game, which hopefully sees the light of day if the Amico manages to release in April without further delays.
But that's the thing, what happened to the original data? Just because Interplay sold the IP doesn't necessarily mean that the orginal source code and roms were transferred to Foundation 9 / Double Helix. So what I'm saying is it's possible we might not see rereleases of these games anymore, short of a from scratch remake, which seems unlikely to me. And if they do have this data, do they have to remove the interplay logo from the game intro? I'm foggy on all this, but I'd assume stuff like that keeps a lot of rereleases from happening.
@Toy_Link Earthworm Jim's devs were actually Shiny entertainment. Interplay acquired Shiny for a time, and so their only hand in it was publishing the game. Atari then aquired Shiny in 2002, and then sold it again in 2006 to Foundation 9, where Shiny merged with The Collective to become the studio now known as Double Helix Games. So anyway, what I'm getting at is that repeated transfer of ownership probably has something to do with why we haven't seen re-releases from the Earthworm Jim series, and why we might not ever see the one that was being developed exclusively for the Amico.
