@RudyC3 I'd argue it's either impossible or pointless to go for 100% at all. It would take years to level up not only our own character but especially the six heroes. I finished all 7 areas, and they're still at level 16 or so. Not worth the time it takes just waiting for the already drawn-out tower siege scenarios (the optional ones, not the required ones). And that's assuming it all caps off at level 99 like your average RPG.
@Nameless_Shame I'm not sure they'd need Capcom at all. The Oracle games were directed by Hidemaro Fujibayashi, who was part of Capcom's Flagship studio at the time. After doing Minish Cap, he parted ways and joined Nintendo full-time.
He's since directed both Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild.
@HammerGalladeBro I played Sunshine with the Switch Joy Cons. Worked pretty well for me. Even using a separate button for analog FLUDD actions was easy to adjust.
4 hours seems about right. It's not about the amount of content, but rather how a game is paced. A game that's supposed to be short can be exhausting even it lasts under 10 hours.
Case in point, Actraiser Renaissance can get needlessly long - the way it tries to artificially extend the original game's 2 hour duration by relying on the Tower Defense mechanism to level up your characters. It can take well over a dozen hours. 10 hours too long, if you ask me.
I've completed it again last night, replaying all the titles in preparation for Dread.
Putting the story aside, it's a perfectly functional game that despite its linearity, it does encourage the player to explore each area for hidden items and expansions. It's not until the post-Queen Metroid section that you realize how many items you've missed the first time around, and you're forced to come up with clever ways to find them.
And yes, the game is brimming with atmosphere and tension. Try playing the game at night. Slow walking through Sector 0 is an experience in itself.
It's a 5.1 surround sound home theater system all the way, plus a 55 inch screen. The only way I play the Switch, or any other console (Wii, Wii U, GCN, and SNES Classic). I was in Hyrule for months when playing Breath of the Wild.
@ShadowofTwilight22 I'm playing Adventure 1 for the first time. While there are good moments, I'd be lying if I ignored the game's major issues. Characters cling to walls and objects; Big's fishing line sticks to walls; Amy loses sprinting speed with the slightest turn; there's no proper feedback to the Chaos boss fights. There are plenty more.
But the worst aspect is the game's camera. Enemies snipe Sonic before we can see them. And that's not even factoring in the bugs and glitches: one wrong move and the camera finds itself behind a wall, obscuring the action, which can easily happen on a level like Sky Deck. You might as well restart the level.
And the fact that it was made in 1998 is NOT an excuse. This came out two years after Super Mario 64, and even that's game's camera worked better.
To me, that would be the Atari 2600 version of Donkey Kong. That was my first Nintendo software experience.
In terms of hardware, I do recall playing an unspecified Game & Watch game as a toddler before being exposed to the NES. My first NES games were Excitebike, Duck Hunt and SMB1.
Let's analyze this for a moment. Sonic Colors was a Wii game that came out a full year before Skyward Sword. If Nintendo was capable of upgrading SS to HD without losing the framerate, it stands to reason that the Switch could have easily handled a 60FPS version of Colors.
So, I don't buy for a second the notion that the Switch is somehow incapable of handling it. If anything, this is living proof that SEGA programmers aren't competent enough to port the game across multiple platforms. We've seen this before, with SEGA producing very subpar PS2 versions of Sonic games like Heroes and Unleashed.
Seriously, this is Sonic Colors - a 2010 game way less demanding than something like Breath of the Wild.
I would have ranked the Wii version of Unleashed higher. Trying to get all the sun and moon medals, as well as unlocking every piece of concept art and audio is pretty addictive (and way less frustrating than the nearly broken Secret Rings). Plus, it has a fantastic soundtrack.
But I still agree with Colors ranking that high. It's very much the best designed 3D Sonic game (minus that damned red medal that requires three consecutive precise laser wisps on the Aquarium level).
Haven't yet played the two Adventure games to judge and compare.
Mine still works to this day. That's craftsmanship. Only needed to replace the controller's worn analog stick, and also get a new power outlet.
I still own the following cartridges; all working perfectly with original save files intact:
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire Mario Kart 64 GoldenEye 007 Mission: Impossible F-Zero X Star Wars: Rogue Squadron The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (with the original Fire Temple music) Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine Star Wars Episode I - Battle for Naboo Perfect Dark The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Truth be told, it is possible to gain considerable speed with the rafts when you get to open sea after developing a steady rhythm with the Korok Leaf. It's very noticeable when you travel to Eventide Island or when you go for the areas where you can fish chests for Lurelin side quests.
It's also noticeable when getting to that shrine in the middle of the ocean, but I usually glide to it from the high cliffs instead.
And yes, I'm expecting some form of gameplay and maybe a cutscene trailer on E3. Prime 3 was playable at E3 2006, even though it still looked closer to Echoes and needed an extra year of polish and design decisions before being completed.
People are way too pessimistic. Let's put this into perspective. Metroid Prime 3 took two and a half years to make. The more recent Samus Returns also took approximately that long from start to finish. This is Metroid, people. Not Breath of the Wild. It's not a massive open-world epic.
Why would Prime 4 take any longer to produce? Granted, it's the fourth game, so expectations would be higher. So, let's say it takes an extra six months to implement any design decisions to make up for those expectations. If development restarted under Retro just over 2 years ago, I'm assuming we'll be getting the game fully completed and released by December of this year.
Hey! I watch and rewatch Rick & Morty to this day! Still eagerly awaiting next season too.
But seriously, I'm actually going to buy this. I hadn't bought any reheated Wii U titles other than Breath of the Wild before this. But Bowser's Fury is more than enough to justify this. I enjoyed the hell out of 3D World back when it first came out.
@Ralek85 I disagree with this notion that voice acting improves on the experience while in-game. In fact, I think it does the opposite. I think it distracts from the action and forces the player to stop and pay attention to the dialogue.
If it were a slow-paced point-and-click adventure game, it's okay to have intrusive dialogue midway through the action. Buy on a faster-paced game like Breath of the Wild or a platformer it would feel distracting.
I was playing the Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion remake and just couldn't concentrate on the tight platforming with the narrator droning on and on about Mickey's adventure.
Personally, I feel Breath of the Wild did it best. Kept the voiceover work to the cutscenes. While cutscenes where you don't have any control can be kind of a drag, you only need to view them once if you're worried about pacing. Having an optional cutscene skip button is the best solution for me in this case.
@Kochambra It wasn't polygonal 3D at the time, but Dark Forces (1995) still relied very much on vertical manual aiming to hit enemies on different heights. It was a more advanced engine than the one used on DOOM.
The sequel, Jedi Knight, was full 3D (released after Shadows of the Empire).
"Breath of the Wild, he says, is a more therapeutic and calming experience."
Until you get a glitched Blood Moon halfway through Akkala Highlands. Got one of those out of nowhere. Biggest surprise scare there is. Enough for my adrenaline to shoot through the roof.
It could be for a separate side Zelda project. Given the recent success of Link's Awakening for the Switch, who's to say this couldn't be another remake of a classic 2D Zelda, possibly even that being A Link to the Past, or better yet the original 1986 entry?
@1UP_MARIO You were right, after all. It was indeed the power supply. Connected with another one. Now it plays perfectly without resets. Played Ocarina v 1.1 for hours without interruption. It's the only way I get to hear the original Fire Temple chants and witness the original Bongo Bongo shadow effects.
Question. I still have my old N64. My cartridges still play, for the most part, but for some reason the console keeps resetting at random, going back to the title screen of every game.
Does anyone have an idea of what might be causing this problem? Old power supply, poor cartridge connecting slot, anything? I haven't a clue.
@infernogott I used to think it was related to whichever direction Mario was facing.
This finally explains my long-lasting frustration with the World 1-6 1up mushroom. When I was a kid and I hit the block, the mushroom always veered left, allowing me to catch it in time. In recent years, it always veered right, going into the abyss as a result.
Now I realize it's because of my reflexes. As a kid, they weren't as honed, which meant I was unconsciously hitting the block from the right, not being an able jumper. Now, as an adult, I tend to reflex-jump faster, therefore hitting that same block from the left.
"Unlike in previous Mega Man games, these fights evolve as they wear on, requiring you to change up your strategy and learn new patterns if you want a shot at succeeding."
@MitchVogel Did you even play Mega Man X2 or X3? I'm pretty sure those 16-bit games had bosses who adopted new desperate techniques when low on health.
I'm still playing Champions' Ballad on Wii U. And have yet to find 34 Korok Seeds.
I haven't played the Switch yet, but the Wii U version has amazing surround sound. Easily the best mixed 3D Zelda. Only Wind Waker comes close.
Frame rate has definitely improved over the last several updates. And I don't get the Moblin death screen freeze anymore.
One thing they really ought to update is the ability to carry more than 80 food items, plus removing the 100 armor pieces max cap. If I want to carry one of each food type available (including all roasted items), I'll run out of space pretty fast. And anyone who has Amiibo unlocked armor parts will run into the same problem.
@Magrane To put it simply, it's because the PSX version is not the original one. The game was designed as a 16 bit SNES title. The original just sounds better (effects and soundtrack). Plus, I feel rhe PSX anime cutscenes feel rather out of place with the game's own tone, rooted in 16 bit graphics and design conventions.
It's also a matter of preference. I can appreciare remakes, but I'll always favor the original version (Il'l take the NES Mario titles over the All-Stars games any day). And the PSX X3 wasn't really a remake but a port.
Plus, X4 and MM8 handled the cutscenes and gameplay transitions better.
This means that for the first time ever, Mega Man X7 and X8 will be playable on actual Nintendo hardware (never owned PS hardware myself). I'm finally going to be able to complete the X series!
Needless to say, I'm well aware how divisive X7 was. I'll finally be able to see whether the 3D sections work as well as the 2D ones. One thing I'm not looking forward to is the reploid rescuing aspect. That was a frustrating aspect of X6.
I wonder if they'll use the SNES or PSX version of X3 in this collection. If it's the PSX version, I have good reason to hold on to my Wii U and the X3 I have in it.
That's just great. My Wii U updates, I get version 1.3.4. Stable patch, right?
Five minutes into playing the game once again and I get a random Blood Moon at 4:30 AM, in-game time.
Whatever this update did, it wasn't in the name of stability. And I do not like random glitches like these. I do not want several Blood Moons in a row and suddenly be forced to face armies of silver enemies.
"nor should its appeal be limited to 30-something gamers that lack the speedy reflexes of the past."
I take exception to that statement. I'm 35, and my reflexes are perfectly fine.
I run, I swim, I play tennis, I pedal, and when I'm sitting with a controller I can do mockballs in games like Super Metroid, or spin jump my way out of tight spots in Super Mario Galaxy. Last night, I completed Toy Time's Purple Coin challenge without dying even once.
If there's another collection later on, they have to include Phelios and Burning Force. I enjoyed the hell out of the Genesis versions, but I'd welcome the arcade originals if possible.
@rushiosan You mean Mario 3 didn't take place between Galaxy 1 and 2? We all know Bowser decided to scale back on his world domination plans by enslaving small-time kings instead of using black holes. All in order to get a slice of Peach's cake.
We also know Super Mario Land came imediatelly after SMB3. Therefore he decided to cheat on her with Daisy for a while before joining her on vacation to Dinosaur Land.
"but for 30-something players today, the prospect of sitting cross-legged on the floor might be less appealing."
I take exception to that generalized statement. I like to sit cross-legged on the floor. Not that I glue my eyes in front of the screen, however. It certainly helps me concentrate more. And I feel it's better than playing while slouched on a couch like some lazy drone.
Seriously, does everyone forget there were 2D Mario platformers on the monochrome Game Boy? And that they were pretty well designed and inspired entries in the series?
I'm going to download Majora and see if this plays any better than the Wii version. That version had serious joystick deadzone issues whenever aiming with the bow, plus some serious lag.
I did enjoy the Wii U version of Ocarina. Despite some small lag, it had the best graphics emulation. It certainly looked much more closer to the N64 original than the Wii and GCN releases.
Regarding the analog stick's deadzone, it's a problem for all emulated N64 games, not just F-Zero X.
Don't think this is a problem exclusive to the Wii U either. I had the exact same problem when I played it on the Wii. Try playing the Wii version of Majora's Mask, specifically the arrow shooting minigames. It's nearly impossible to hit your targets with any accuracy thanks to that analog stick, plus lag and questionable framerate.
It's not all bad though. If anything, the Wii U version of Ocarina of Time is probably the best emulation by far, as far as graphics are concerned. That's the version in which they've finally managed to replicate the original N64 torch lighting effects.
@shani THANK YOU! Someone had to point this out. There's nothing more irrational than the stock market, and people still treat it as gospel. It's as if no one has learned anything since the 2008 crash.
Finally, I get the chance to employ the use of restore points on this game. This allows for me to perfect a 12 day 100% run, unlocking Epona during the first post-prologue cycle. That's always the hardest challenge.
I suffered doing this in the Wii version, and thanks to some questionable design choices, I was unable to do this in the 3DS remake. They sped up the slowed clock. I could no longer unlock Epona on day 1.
@mjc0961 You only need the Titan's Mitt to actually access Levels 5, 6 and 7. And the Titan's Mitt is easily reachable once you get the Hammer from the Dark Palace. All you need to do is enter the Dark World from Kakariko Village, using the Hammer shortcut.
That pretty much enables Link to travel through both worlds without being hindered by obstacles, long before going to levels 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8. You can get to Level 8 right away. You just can't open it without the crystal, obviously. I consider that to be freedom of exploration, as well as being able to do the aforementioned levels in pretty much any other (as long as 2 is done prior to 5, 6 and 7 because of the Hookshot).
That makes Link's Awakening a lot more linear. In A Link to the Past, once you get to the Dark World, all you need to do is get the Hammer on the Dark Palace, which leads to the Titan's Mitt on Level 4, and you can pretty much access both worlds from beginning to end.

Re: Review: Namco Museum (Switch eShop)
If there's another collection later on, they have to include Phelios and Burning Force. I enjoyed the hell out of the Genesis versions, but I'd welcome the arcade originals if possible.
Re: Guide: How To Shield Surf Like A Pro In Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
A good tool for speedrunners, that's for sure.
If anything, Nintendo was justified in taking as long as it did to polish this game. These last four years of development were very well spent.
And, best of all, no game-breaking bugs. Actually, let me rephrase that. No bugs whatsoever. At least none that I've seen.
Re: Yep, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Takes Place After Ocarina of Time
@rushiosan You mean Mario 3 didn't take place between Galaxy 1 and 2? We all know Bowser decided to scale back on his world domination plans by enslaving small-time kings instead of using black holes. All in order to get a slice of Peach's cake.
We also know Super Mario Land came imediatelly after SMB3. Therefore he decided to cheat on her with Daisy for a while before joining her on vacation to Dinosaur Land.
Re: Hardware Review: Famicom Classic Mini
"but for 30-something players today, the prospect of sitting cross-legged on the floor might be less appealing."
I take exception to that generalized statement. I like to sit cross-legged on the floor. Not that I glue my eyes in front of the screen, however. It certainly helps me concentrate more. And I feel it's better than playing while slouched on a couch like some lazy drone.
Re: Talking Point: Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS and 'Super Mario Challenge' - A New Future for 2D Mario
SUPER MARIO LAND 2: 6 GOLDEN COINS
Seriously, does everyone forget there were 2D Mario platformers on the monochrome Game Boy? And that they were pretty well designed and inspired entries in the series?
Re: Nintendo Download: 24th November (North America)
I'm going to download Majora and see if this plays any better than the Wii version. That version had serious joystick deadzone issues whenever aiming with the bow, plus some serious lag.
I did enjoy the Wii U version of Ocarina. Despite some small lag, it had the best graphics emulation. It certainly looked much more closer to the N64 original than the Wii and GCN releases.
Re: Soapbox: Captain Falcon, We Have A Problem With F-Zero X on Wii U
I also had similar analog stick problems with the Gamecube versions of Ocarina and Majora.
Re: Soapbox: Captain Falcon, We Have A Problem With F-Zero X on Wii U
Re: Nintendo Share Price Stabilises After Worst Weekly Performance Since 1989
@shani THANK YOU! Someone had to point this out. There's nothing more irrational than the stock market, and people still treat it as gospel. It's as if no one has learned anything since the 2008 crash.
Re: Review: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (Wii U / N64)
Finally, I get the chance to employ the use of restore points on this game. This allows for me to perfect a 12 day 100% run, unlocking Epona during the first post-prologue cycle. That's always the hardest challenge.
I suffered doing this in the Wii version, and thanks to some questionable design choices, I was unable to do this in the 3DS remake. They sped up the slowed clock. I could no longer unlock Epona on day 1.
Re: Anniversary: New Super Mario Bros. is Now a Decade Old
Are you kidding me? Super Mario World the last proper 2D Mario game prior to the New Super Mario series? Seriously, do people fact-check at all?
SUPER MARIO LAND 2: 6 GOLDEN COINS (1992)!!!
Look it up. Seriously.
Re: Video: Check Out a Surprisingly Simple Nintendo 64 Anti-Aliasing Hack
Majora's Mask looked stunning with AA. Without it, it looked cheaper than Ocarina of Time.
Re: Takashi Tezuka Began Development On Zelda: Link's Awakening Without Nintendo's Permission
Re: Takashi Tezuka Began Development On Zelda: Link's Awakening Without Nintendo's Permission
That makes Link's Awakening a lot more linear. In A Link to the Past, once you get to the Dark World, all you need to do is get the Hammer on the Dark Palace, which leads to the Titan's Mitt on Level 4, and you can pretty much access both worlds from beginning to end.
