Update 2 (Thu 26th Mar, 2020 16:00 GMT): And there we have it! Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is being made available today on Nintendo Switch.
The game was shown off in today's Nintendo Direct Mini, where it was also revealed that Star Wars Episode I: Racer will be getting a Switch remake. Here's a feature list:
- Play with up to 16 online players in six online multiplayer modes including: Siege, Capture the Flag, and Free for All.
- Customize your character by defining both look and gender before entering the Academy to learn the power and dangers of the Force.
- Construct your own lightsaber from handle to blade. As you progress, discover the power of wielding two lightsabers or the ultimate double-bladed lightsaber.
- Interact with famous Star Wars characters in many classic Star Wars locations as you face the ultimate choice: fight for good and freedom on the light side or follow the path of power and evil to the dark side.
Update 1 (Thu 26th Mar, 2020 02:25 GMT): A listing for this game has now appeared on the Canadian Switch eShop (thanks, Nintendo Everything), and it appears to have the same release date as the PlayStation 4 version (26th March). We'll just have to wait and see!
Original article - Sun 22nd Mar, 2020 07:05 GMT: One welcome surprise on the Switch last year was the release of Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. Although this version didn't include the much-loved multiplayer component, Aspyr Media still made the effort to improve the solo experience over time with some patches.
What's going on with Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, though? It was confirmed for Switch last September alongside the reveal of Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and was scheduled to be arriving early on in 2020. Well, the latest update comes from the PlayStation Blog of all places. Yep, according to a new post, Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is arriving digitally on the PlayStation 4 on 26th March. Here's the description for this console:
The online multiplayer classic comes to PS4 with Trophies and modernized controls! Take on the role of a new student eager to learn the ways of the Force from Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. Interact with famous Star Wars characters as you face the ultimate choice: fight for good and freedom on the light side or follow the path of power and evil to the dark side.
While there's obviously no mention of the Nintendo Switch release on this page, there's a theory going around it could be linked to the rumoured Nintendo Direct, which is believed to be taking place on 26th March. This same rumour already predicted the recent Nintendo Indie World Showcase. Keep in mind, there is no guarantee, so we'll just have to wait and find out.

Direct come too me... And it's available after this presentation...
oh my god , i have waiting for this game for so long !!!!!!
hop the multiplayer will work too
Everyone needs to play this. Easily one of the best Star Wars wars games. Up there with KOTOR and Fallen Order.
@Dezzy KOTOR 2 was pretty great too, even if it was kind of unfinished.
You won't find better lightsaber combat in any other game
If it's not Pod Racer, I dun' wannit!
Shadow drop maybe?
That is probably one of my all time favorite Star Wars games.
Huh, that's odd considering the insider that predicted the Indie direct last week said we would be getting a Nintendo Direct on the 26th as well.........HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Really wish they remade it and made more changes. Hard pass for me, I enjoyed the old one, will wait for the next innovation.
While it’s a great game and still one the best Star Wars games to this day, it’s still a shame these are the kind Star Wars games the Switch will get.
That being said, I’d still love to see Bounty Hunter, Commandos, KotoR, original Battlefront II, Force Unleashed and Rogue Leader on Switch.
I’ll be as direct as possible, my life needs some direction right now with more information pumped directly into my brain. DIRECTLY into my brain
Why is the sequel to Jedi Knight 2 called Jedi Knight and not Jedi Knight 3?
@locky-mavo I mean these are the only good Starwars games ANY console will ever get with EA holding the license hostage.
@OorWullie For the same reason Doom 2016 is just called Doom despite being a sequel to Doom 64, making it Doom 5 canonically I believe.
@OorWullie
Actually it should probably be called dark forces 4, here's the quadrilogy:
Star Wars: Dark Forces
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
If we want to take their naming to ridiculous extremes it should probably be "Star Wars Jedi Knight III: Jedi Outcast II: Jedi Academy: Dark Forces IV." a
Jedi Academy features a different main character, but the MC for the previous three games has a large supporting role which is probably why it isn't called JK3
Eh, I assume it'll cut the multiplayer like Jedi Knight 2 did.
I would love me some Dark Forces on the switch along with all the Star Wars game cube games.
While I'm begging..let's get the original Quake and those glorious ID RPG games 😍
And for the love of God...gimme more N64 games like wave race 😝
Isolation is making me delirious 🤪
I wish all Star Wars games would release on Switch. Dark Forces, Rogue Squadron, Episode 1 Racer, I would buy them all again.
@Trikeboy
I seriously want Dark Forces to come before any of the others.That game, in my opinion, is one of the best in the series.
@Kochambra
I never got round to playing it!
@Dezzy If you liked KOTOR, it's well worth a try. It was rushed to release before it was finished and it shows, but it's still very enjoyable and it features one of the most fascinating characters I have found in a videogame.
You can get the game really cheap on GOG and it'll probably run perfectly on any PC made the last 15 years.
@Santa I believe they said that this game would have the multiplayer
@patbacknitro18 With Doom 2016 it is kind of understandable as it was a reboot after more than a decade without a new entry. These Star Wars games were all released over 6 or 7 years though. @shaneoh comment, which gave me a chuckle shows that it doesn't really make sense. I think by the 4th entry, they just thought this is getting silly and stopped adding a number after Jedi Knight.
That's literally my favorite Star Wars game. I got it for $19.99 at Meijer along with Unreal Championship 2. Those are easily 2 of the best games money can buy on the original Xbox.
back in 2004-2009 i used to play this for PC
in multiplayer there's a style of server/client combo called "basejka" which means its the base game for competitive play, no mods, no, it's the more eSports way to play
from 1v1 ladder tournaments to seasonal TDM games on Electronic Sports League, JA was one of the best multiplayer experiences of the 2000s
the problem? game is trash without a mouse and keyboard and the ability to TRULY customize your play with the ~ console commands and the game is even MORE trash without a multiplayer mode at all
Gosh I hope it’s coming. I’ve been waiting.
I’m glad others will get to enjoy it but Ive played it before so I’ll pass. I wish at least Disney would remake the Rogue Squadron game but what I’d really like are remakes of the X-Wing and Tie Fighter games.
@Kochambra the game is a lil sparse without the restored content. Hopefully we’ll see Disney remake KOTOR and KOTOR II and do things like adding in the cut content.
@shaneoh you forgot Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith, at no time did the series have a consistent naming system.
@GrandScribe Personally, I wouldn't trust many developers besides Obsidian themselves to do a proper job remaking/finishing the game. And now that they have been assimilated into the Microsoft blob, I'm afraid that them taking the job seems pretty unlikely
If the first two Dark Forces games came to Switch I would buy all four of them in a heartbeat.
@Beermonkey As predicted here: https://youtu.be/H7w6a6-lQE8
I hope this is a sign of a Direct, between my backlog becoming smaller and Xbox Live going down virtually every day nowadays I need more Switch games.
@LegendOfPokemon Doom and Doom2 play pretty well on Switch, so those two should be okay too, because if I remember correctly, the Dark Forces games where also 2D games disguised as 3D (i.e. there was no need for vertical aiming).
@JayJ
Same for me
This wil be an insta buy, even if I already have the game four times
( pc cd rom Steam Mac Xbox)
I never liked Jedi Outcast (though I did buy it a second time on Switch). Any chance I’d like this game? My biggest issue with Outcast is the level design. It’s so bizarre. I have no clue what to do like 90% of the time. Is this game similar in its design?
@Kochambra there are a lot of competent people in the industry, so not having Obsidian do the remakes might not be bad. Disney ain’t likely to let EA be involved going forward given how poorly they handled the Star Wars IP.
@Krambo42 Don’t play the originals their designs were worse and the poor polygon count and textures could really make things quite difficult.
I hope so! And i hope in a smooth porting.
A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
@GrandScribe I’ve played Dark Forces and Jedi Knight. Back when they came out. I remember doing ok with DF, but never quite got JK. Fun multiplayer though.
Give us the original Atari Starwars with Giro Controls
I'm so eager for this!
I also want Republic Commando.
@Krambo42 Every review I've seen says that Jedi Outcast is way too confusing and frustrating. Meanwhile, they say Academy was a massively improved game that is much more fun to play.
Personally, I got Outcast on Steam and found it unnecessarily aggravating, just as many people say. The game showed great promise though, so I'm super eager to buy Academy on Switch. Day one purchase for me.
@sketchturner Yeah, I’ve read that too. I’d love to play a game like Outcast that is easier to get into. I hope it’s true!
Really, really need KOTOR now and Episode I Racer (PC version) would be amazing also.
Edit: It’s me from the not too distant future. I don’t know what Jedi mind tricks you were pulling but Episode I Racer is coming to Switch!!!
Jedi Outcast on Switch was SO AWFUL ... one of the best all-time games, but a terrible port. I replayed both on PC after trying to slog my way through the Switch version. Hope the Jedi Academy port doesn’t suck like JKII, but not holding my breath!
@OorWullie Doom 2016 isn't a reboot, it is a direct sequel to Doom 64
@GrandScribe
I considered adding it, but as it's an expansion to DFII, I thought I'd just leave it as it is.
Dark Forces for me too please, I fancy punching stormtroopers in the face again.
I kindly ask for Shadows of the Empire to be ported to Switch. Now, with that being said, I will buy Jedi Academy when it releases.
I still don't understand why they released them in this order, but I'm not complaining. I just loving seeing classic pre-Disney expanded universe games getting some love!
See, unlike in Disney Wars, in the old EU, Luke isn't a coward who gives up rebuilding the Jedi after a single failed class.
Very Cool! I'm interested.
While I will 100% buy this when/if it comes, I feel inclined to also say "Episode I Racer or GTFO."
One of the best Star Wars games ever made. Both the single and multiplayer modes are awesome, waaay above Jedi Outcast. I’ll get it as soon as it releases
Oh thank god! Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast has not aged well and that's largely due to its over-reliance on switch hunting and gun play--two things it doesn't do very well.
Jedi Academy, on the other hand, is a really streamlined experience meant to get a lightsaber in your hands and get you out doing Jedi stuff asap. The levels are more like playgrounds and the combat is awesome. I can't wait to play through this again!
@Dezzy Hey, if you mention KOTOR it must be a great game!
@Reigestugatensho
It's completely different to KOTOR, but definitely a great game!
I think it's time I grab both games. I hope KOTOR 1+2 comes to Switch next. And maybe the Rogue Squadron games too? One can dream! Oh, and the old Star Wars Battlefront games too!
@Kochambra I actually prefer KOTOR 2 to KOTOR 1, I like the story more and the lack of a crippling level cap. Even though lore wise, Revan is supposed to be extremely powerful, I never felt like I was more than just barely getting by. In KOTOR 2 by the end of the game I really feel like a Jedi master or Sith Lord!
I recently purchased this game on my Xbox One X. It's the original Xbox version, however it has been "enhanced for Xbox One X."
I'm wondering: Is this incoming release (for Switch & PS4) going to be superior to my "enhanced" Xbox version?
If the differences are significant, I don't mind double-dipping, especially given the Switch's portability...
it's not appearing for me on my Canadian eShop. Neither on Switch nor the website. Strange...
@GrizzledVeteran
The inclusion of the original online mutiplayer mode for PS4 and Switch is pretty significant, so yes.
Direct's tomorrow baby!
Now, if only we could get Star Wars: KOTOR and Force Unleashed.
So awesome, CANT WAIT FOR SOME MULTIPLAYER ACTION!!!
TAKE MY MONEY !
..yes.
@Kochambra On GOG you can find KotoR2 with a Community-Patch that not only fixes everything broken but also finished and added the Quests that should have been in there. Played it and it's awesome
@shaneoh very good - Ive often thought this too!
@mrmememan I don’t think we’ve ever had a Direct on a Friday have we? I’d love to be as optimistic, I really can’t wait for the next Direct, but I don’t see it happening this week.
Maybe we get a Direct Mini today, they usually release them without announcing them before
but tbh i dont hope we get a direct mini, after 200+ days a simple direct mini would be very disappointing
@Ajent No, I'm thinking Nintendo is going to stealth drop the direct itself today, but that is probably just wishful thinking.
I'd love to get Dark Forces and Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight on the Switch. That's pretty much my '90s adolescence right there.
@mrmememan haha, yeah. That would be awesome... but I think you’re right about the wishful thinking. It would be pretty dope though.
@mrmememan There's no Jedi Academy in the press release, and definitely no direct.
It's not really Jedi Academy without mod support.
@EVIL-C I know
@mrmememan HOLY SH*T! It actually happened... first thing I did was comeback here to say congrats man!
Now... do me a favour and pick 6 numbers at random for me, say between 1 and 50 😆
@Ajent 6,9,4,2,0,50
@mrmememan Well I'm happy to admit when I'm wrong. 😋 I didn't doubt Jedi would release at some point (I'm assuming the info was quickly yanked) but I never expected a stealth direct.
@EVIL-C It's ok I hold no hate we're just here to play Star Wars and Panzer Dragoon
@mrmememan Lol... cheers buddy. I’m gonna be a millionaire!! Lol.
@Liam_Doolan do we know if it's got cross-platform on the multiplayer?
@Ajent You son of a bit**! You used me for your damn lotto numbers!
@Kochambra It wasn't polygonal 3D at the time, but Dark Forces (1995) still relied very much on vertical manual aiming to hit enemies on different heights. It was a more advanced engine than the one used on DOOM.
The sequel, Jedi Knight, was full 3D (released after Shadows of the Empire).
@Paraka your in luck
I'm afraid to try a new Star wars have, I'm afraid it will be micro transaction or collect cards for progression or some such silliness. Yuck
I've had this on pc since the xp days, but the multiplayer on switch has my attention. May have to check it out.
@Danrenfroe2016 This game was originally released in the early 2000s, so there's none of that.
I hope for Star Wars: KOTOR 1 & 2 on Switch!
Anyone played it? Is it good? And how much does it cost on the Eshop?
@The-Chosen-one Its great. Supports Gyro aswell and Multiplayer games are a blast
Is this MP only?
20€ on the Europe eshop, gotta be a joke for a 20yo game... The direct is getting me salty between the huge download for Borderland and this.
Very excited about pod racer remake though 😁
@JRJalapeno nope. Has its own single player campaign
@Heavyarms55 Old Battlefront was a joyride... I could play a Wampa and then turn around and be Rebel fighter!
@The-Chosen-one: This game is excellent, if you like 3d action/adventure games with a pinch of puzzle games.
@Vepra thanks 👍
There’s no way play with your friends online? Only with strangers?
@JRJalapeno Dark Forces is sooooo good
@dudujencarelli Wasn’t Dark Forces built off an offshoot of the Build Engine?
Racer - I called this a while back, since licensing was already sorted when released on Gog. For reference, these star wars games have also had PC re-releases on GOG after Disney's acquisition, meaning that all of the licensing hurdles for re-releasing on console have been navigated already:
Star Wars: Jedi Outcast
Star Wars: Jedi Academy
Star Wars: Racer
Star wars: Rogue Squadron 3D
Star wars: Republic commando
Star wars: Knights of the Old Republic (1 and 2)
Star wars: Starfighter
Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (2005)
Star wars: Battlefront (2004)
Star wars: The force unleashed (1 and 2)
Star wars: Shadows of the Empire
Star wars: Galactic Battlegrounds
Star wars: Empire at war
There are also a handful that have released on PS4 already, that never released on Xbox One. This leads me to believe these titles will NOT be released on Switch due to exclusivity deals:
Star wars: Bounty Hunter
Star wars: Racer revenge
Super Star Wars
Star wars: Jedi Starfighter
Caught in licensing issues and unlikely to release, but now with Factor V campaigning for release:
Rogue Squadron 4, supposedly near completed for the Wii.
Rogue Squadron 3
Rogue Squadron 2
@Capt_N
Tnx for the reply, will get it later!
Yes! Between this and Panzer Dragoon, and Doom 64 I will be gaming like it is the 90s/2000s!
"Rosh Penin has died" - such a terrible glitch and yet it remains here in this release over a decade later.
Once you start the game, save the very first chance you get as the only way around this glitch is to restart the game over and over until you get past it which means customizing your character and saber.
At one point you'll get to a section where Rosh say's to use your lightsaber to cut down the tree to make a bridge (second tree you cut down), he will then take a force jump and die. Again and again and again..
Some say its the game AI that decides he dies whilst others say if he takes damage from howlers, the fall from the force jump kills him.
Either way - if this happens, you'll need to start again until you get through it.
Apart from that, it's a bloody great game that does lightsaber combat right.
@PickledKong64 - I got to see that.
This rattles my walnuts, good times.
What a fantastic game ... but £18 seems so over-priced, sadly will wait until it gets a sale
@Antraxx777 No, the Jedi engine was completely built from scratch. You could call it 2.5D, but it could still do multiple floors and vertical aiming.
