Re: Talking Point: Come In Nintendo 3DS, Your Time Is Up

diditall4tanooki

I have a special place in my heart for the DS/3DS. I spent almost 10 years drifting around different places, which made it unrealistic to own a home console. My DS Lite and then 3DS were the only video games consoles I carried with me and played during that time. It was literally the only thing that kept me involved with video games. That said, I do agree with other users, who have pointed out that the console and games are still too expensive, which compromises the prospect of further longevity.

I think we can all agree that the unintuitive nature of the Switch eshop is to blame for many of these games falling off the radar. I know they've added the "Featured" section but unless a game is brand new or on sale, there's really very little chance it's going to pop up. You need to go looking for these games on the eshop in order to find them.

Re: UK Retailer Argos Slashes The Price Of amiibo To £6.99

@Linoshi You accurately described my thoughts on Amiibo figures. Last week I literally spent an hour or two scouring various retailers' websites for the best prices of all the different figures I'd convinced myself I needed. With them all in their respective online shopping carts, I felt rather smug about having "beaten the system" and saved significantly on the RRPs. Then, just as I was about to confirm the orders, I had a sudden moment of clarity and thought: "What the hell am I doing? My wife is going to go nuts when all this colourful plastic starts showing up in the post..."

Re: Preview: Going Hands On With the New Nintendo 2DS XL

@AirElephant Ha sounds like we're of the same demographic, my friend! I was a HUGE fan of the GBA - especially the SP. I still play it to this day (literally played it today) and I'm just always so amazed by the battery life. It's still my go to if I'm grabbing a handheld to take out and about for the day, whereas I tend to play my 3DS around the house or on longer trips, such as flights or long train journeys. Like you, I'd definitely like to see a current generation take on the GBA but with so many portable options from Nintendo alone, I just don't see a significant market for it in which they wouldn't be directly competing with their own products.

Initially, I wasn't sold on the DS concept either. When it was first announced I thought it was gimmicky and the first model was so ugly (especially compared to the GBA SP). It wasn't until they released the DS Lite in 2006 that I jumped on board. To an extent, I think you've got a point with the criticism of the two screens. Almost 15 years on and there's still developers that aren't using the second screen in a meaningful way. Although, I accept, part of that is because certain genres/games don't really require two screens, which I guess is pretty much your argument. I would say that my experience with some games have been truly enhanced with the constant presence of a map or inventory, for example. So in that sense, I do like the second screen. However, with Nintendo abandoning the WiiU gamepad screen I wouldn't be surprised to see them revert to a single screen on their next line of portables. If, indeed, there will be another one.

@AirElephant Haha enjoyed that Taco Bell analogy! Completely take your point on it being overpriced too. At $200, the New 3DS XL feels really expensive considering its age. You can find current gen home consoles for the same price. So launching the New 2DS XL at $150 definitely seems a bit much. I don't think I'm ready for Nintendo to let the DS fade away just yet, though! I still get a lot of use out of mine and would welcome the continued support. The strength of the games library is enough to justify its existence, regardless of the old technology. Besides, I think it would be incredibly, not to mention counterproductive, for Nintendo to market a brand new next generation handheld with the Switch so recently launched.

Re: GameStop Confirms Nintendo Switch Stock Now In US Stores With Trade-In Credit Deal

diditall4tanooki

@MarinaKat If Gamestop try shafting you on something like that it's worth trying another one (if you live near multiple stores). I traded in my DS Lite for the 3DS back in 2011. The store manager tried telling me there was an issue with the calibration of the touch screen - which was absolute nonsense - so they could only give me $30 for it. I drove to the next Gamestop and the girl there told me it was in perfect condition and gave me $100 in credit towards the 3DS. Not only is there a lack of consistency between stores but some of the less ethical managers actively set out to rip you off to boost their store's sales figures.

P.S. I have always regretted trading my DS Lite in. I loved that thing and felt guilty afterwards, like I let it down or something. Better to save up the money to buy a new console than trade in a beloved system.

Re: Rumour: SNES Classic Mini Coming Later This Year

diditall4tanooki

It doesn't make any sense to withdraw the NES Classic to make space in the market for a SNES Classic. At $60 most Nintendo collectors and people interested in retro consoles/games would probably go in for both. But if that is their reasoning, then a Christmas launch makes even less sense. Nintendo would be introducing another product just when the Switch would be building up a decent catalog of games for potential buyers to get excited about.

Re: Nintendo Switch Owners Will Have To Wait Longer And Pay More For RiME

diditall4tanooki

"The puzzle-based title - which takes around 10 hours to finish - will arrive..." Why is the estimated time it takes to complete the main distinguishing factor in that sentence? Yeah, I get that it sucks that Switch owners are being asked to pay more and, out of principle, won't buy it. That's fine. But the ever growing obsession of judging a game by the length of time it takes to finish is ridiculous. Who cares if it takes 4 hours, 10 hours or 50 hours as long as you enjoy it? I paid $20 for Inside, it took me 4 hours to finish and I loved every minute. I also paid $20 for Dragon Quest 7, which took me 75 hours to finish and, although I enjoyed it for the most part, it became a chore by the end. Judging a game by a ratio of currency spent per hour is completely counter-intuitive.
