@Donnerkebab I was going to suggest that video if nobody else had, I thought it was a really interesting perspective on what was lost (in their opinion, obviously not everyone would agree) with the remake, first thing I thought of after reading this review.
@Slowdive I’m glad they addressed some of the issues in future releases, that’s pretty cool. Although I doubt the major criticism of the lack of segregated rooms and detail and atmosphere in the environments would’ve been affected much, that’s still cool that they took some of the criticism on-board.
@shazbot Yeah that’s happening to me too, no idea why. Hope it’s fixed soon, its hard to read the review itself and the pros and cons are almost impossible to see.
Genuinely disappointing, I’ve been recently rewatching some older Ben 10 series and was looking forward to an open-world version, but it doesn’t sound like it’s worth the full price.
I keep going back and forth, the gameplay sometimes looks pretty fun in a simple, early 3D platformer sort of way, and gliding as Diamondhead or running as XLR8 seem pretty cool, but the combat just seems too unsatisfying (especially with no proper sound effects) and the lack of aliens and performance would probably ruin it for me.
I might end up getting it cheap on PS4, but the Switch version seems too poor to bother with.
It’s a shame though, if they’d had more time and/or budget to add a few more aliens, make the world and characters look just a little better, add some polish to battle sound effects and fix the performance issues it would’ve looked like an actually pretty cool game.
I’d buy basically any game they released for the Switch in the Persona franchise or made by Vanillaware, although I hope they all come to the Switch at some point.
Monster Boy was amazing, so I can’t wait for their next game. One of my favourite games on the Switch so far, you can tell they put a lot of effort in, and I especially love how the characters move using traditional animation and not just moving body part pieces, it makes it feel that much more polished.
I really hope this is both games on a single cartridge, I never got them before, but a bundle like that would probably make me get one.
If one of the games is a download code, that’s an instant no though. I’d be disappointed too if the dlc wasn’t included. I wouldn’t have thought they’d be too big to fit on a single cartridge, and it would clearly make a lot more people want to get it.
I’d like to get one, but I’m still unsure. I’m going on a trip soon, and bringing a second, more compact Switch would be ideal, but with the joy-con issue not being addressed by Nintendo and the new switch having way better battery life, I’m still not sure which would be a better investment as a second more travel-friendly Switch.
I have no idea if this would affect Square Enix’s decision at all, but I’d love to get it on Switch if they released it. It would have to be a quality port though, not a quick cash grab that’s not optimised. Something like the promising looking Witcher 3 port would be great.
It’s really awesome that all these games are being offered in such a complete physical package. I applaud the people behind these for putting in the extra effort to provide a superior release.
I’ve never played these before, but as a fan of physical releases done right and someone who’s intrigued by how deep the games sound, I’ll definitely be picking these up.
I can’t wait for this, I really hope they’re able to get all the content on the cartridge for the retail release. After a wait this long, a download code would be pretty disappointing, and if The Witcher 3 can fit on one, I don’t see why Treasure Trove can’t.
I doubt Yacht Club would cheap out on small cartridges though, they seem committed to quality with their releases.
I like that people can get a more affordable Switch now, but I don’t think this does anything for me.
I don’t play docked much, but I like the option, and it’s what the system is named after.
The standard Switch is already not the most ergonomic design and my eyes sometimes feel like they strain a little with the screen, so making it smaller sounds awful, at least without actually holding it.
Yeah, pretty disappointed they didn’t just reduce the price of the original model and release a more refined model, with a more ergonomic design, more reliable hardware, a better dock, and much more internal storage.
@Yorumi Even if it is used in the game too, this wouldn’t be the first time they changed the art style, Half-Genie Hero went with a much more cartoony art style compared to Pirate’s Curse. I think it would be kind of cool if each game experimented a bit with the art style.
@Moroboshi876 Yeah I’ve heard that the import costs aren’t bad there, sorry about that. I don’t live in the US either, but the import costs aren’t crazy for me unless I order from Play Asia. Does Amazon UK ever list those as being from the global store?
I didn’t realise before I started collecting Switch games how many games don’t get released globally. Half my collection is made up of imports from the US at this point.
Definitely getting Night in the Woods, it sounds awesome. Also probably be getting Blaster Master Zero, Transistor, Freedom Planet and Turok 1 & 2, they all seem to have very positive reviews for the most part, and I don't want to regret not getting them later on. Hopefully they'll release Bastion soon too, they've already released it on PS4 and Vita.
@retro_player_22 If you mean you might not get in before they sell out, all their standard release Switch games are open preorders for at least two weeks, so they're much less stressful to try and get than those from Super Rare and most other limited number companies for the Switch.
@TurboTEF At least this would hopefully mean any future DLC would be included on the cartridge itself (I haven't played either Blaster Master game yet, but I heard the first one got DLC).
@RupeeClock I assume the author of the article assumed it would be on the cart since that’s what would make the most sense, as everything seems to point to the contrary.
Yeah this release really seems pointless to me, just a dressed-up re-release of the same game, just now with the box telling you about the stuff you would’ve gotten anyway. I wish the dlc was on the cart itself, that way it would have potentially been worth a repurchase for collectors and preservationists.
Slightly similar situation with the recent Hollow Knight release. I love that it’s such a nice collector’s edition, and having most of the dlc is better than none, but not including all the content that was available at the time in a physical release seems like wasted potential, and is a bit disappointing.
@RupeeClock Merge Games confirmed on Twitter that that it’s not all on the cartridge. Someone asked “dlc on cart?”, and they said “No, it will be a download ”. In another reply they called it an update, so I’m assuming update means requiring the internet?
It’s not confirmed if this includes a later version than launch, but just before the dlc, but that seems like a strange choice, and I’m assuming it’s just the launch edition in new packaging. Not even a beneficial code for better value, since the dlc’s free anyway. They also said it’s primarily aimed at new players that haven’t tried it yet, so it doesn’t sound like a release worth getting unless you’e never played it or really want the keychain, new box art paper and different manual.
That’s awesome, the first physical copy was the version that lead to my game freezing every time I tried to start it, so it’ll be great to have a working version all on the cart.
I wish more games got “definitive edition” style releases with all the dlc, it makes the physical version feel more worth it. Speaking of which I can’t wait for the Shovel Knight Treasure Trove Physical release too, that’ll be jam-packed with content.
Edit:
Where did you see that the dlc was on the cartridge? I’ve been looking at their post on Twitter, and it doesn’t look like they’ve confirmed that it will be on the cartridge itself, just that it’s included.
I hope it’s all there, but their collector’s edition of Darkest Dungeon was the exact same cartridge as the Ancestral Edition, with the extra dlc being downloadable via the internet, so I’m a bit skeptical until they confirm it.
I think the author has a point, even if I don’t personally think that it’s all that big a deal or necessary, since you can still interact with online friends by sharing levels for each other to play. It’s not the same thing though, and the exclusion is strange, but I don’t think this is the worst decision they’ve made recently (not letting you backup save files except with the online service takes the cake for me).
Also, while sometimes a huge backlash is completely warranted (e.g. Battlefront 2), I think some people (not the author) are treating this like a bigger deal than it is. This article still acknowledges that the game itself looks extremely promising and fun, but I’ve seen people saying how their excitement for the game has dropped hugely after this debacle. That’s fair if that’s true for them personally, but far as I know, online multiplayer wasn’t something anyone was expecting until that direct, and compared to the huge number of inclusions and improvements to the rest of the game over the first, this is a relatively minor slip-up in the grand scheme of things. To treat it like it will sour the whole game is a bit much in my opinion, this is still something they could add in an update later ala stage builder in Smash, not a flaw in the core design or anything, that seems nigh on perfect. I think at the most, this is a huge missed opportunity, not a giant blunder in design, but that’s just my opinion. Not sure what the point of that was, but it was just what I was thinking after reading everyone else’s input.
Also, I don’t want this to sound rude, I think the article is very well-written, if biased (though it doesn’t really pretend not to be) but I found the callouts in the article to read a little strange. Twice, the callout quote immediately precedes the actual sentence being quoted, which just feels kind of weird, like I’m reading the same thing two times. Not sure if that’s just me though.
@ThatNyteDaez I’ve been a fan of Pokémon for so long, but I’ve been really hoping for them to make some changes for a while now. Hearing Game Freak say they want to make something “more exciting than Pokémon” and that they’re prioritising that over Pokémon just sounds weird and concerning.
They could make Pokémon itself more exciting, rather than trying to upstage it with a new IP. A new Pokémon game that looks like it’s making real evolutions to the formula could help the team stay refreshed, it doesn’t need to always be the same thing.
I can wait for it, just longer to save the money. I love that they’ve been bringing these Rayark games out physically, Voez, Deemo and Cytus will look great together on a shelf.
The art is nice and it looks like it could be fun, I might end up getting this if the reviews are mostly positive. I still hope Night in the Woods gets a release soon, I’ve been waiting to play that one since it came out.
@tameshiyaku I’ve only ever gotten Switch releases from them, and they’ve never just had blank back or interior art. Some don’t have a description on the back, but they do have one or more pictures (look up Dust:AET and Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse unboxings), and others, like Golf Story, look more like a retail release on the back, with descriptions and stuff.
I actually think no description on the back can look nice, especially the Shantae one (it’s really clear and clean looking), but I get why some wouldn’t like them (Dust:AET’s in my opinion could be better with a bit of text). I’m not able to check all mine now, but I would say in general LRG do at least a good job, as long as pictures-only doesn’t bother you too much when it happens.
Some of the instruction booklets are thicker and nicer-looking than others, but every Switch game I’ve received has had one, which is better than pretty much all other publishers. Golf Story’s wasn’t my favourite, but Dust:AET’s and Battle Chef Brigade’s we’re great.
They always have interior art of some sort. The Shantae interior artwork is one of my favourites, it looks amazing. Sometimes, like with Dust:AET and Windjammers, it’s a reversible cover, but they’re exceptions, and recently I think they let you choose which one you want shipped on the outside. It’s possible that Va-11 Hall-A will have a reversible cover with the Japanese PS4 version on one side and Switch one on the other, although they’ll probably just keep them exclusive to each console version if it’s like Celeste.
The quality and style varies a bit between releases, but I always end up liking the ones I get. Some retail publishers can do far worse (Blazblue: Central Fiction, Owlboy, Battle Chasers Nightwar and Mega Man 11 are just a few that got stuck with white interiors). I haven’t seen the ones you said you have, but I know someone with old releases of Rainbow Moon and Shadow Complex for PS4 from a few years ago, and I think the difference in quality from how I remembered them looking (e.g. cover with a title logo and not much else) to how my Switch releases look is huge, so it’s possible they’ve improved from when you got yours too.
I’d recommend watching a few of their latest Switch unboxings, like Golf Story, Dust:AET, Shantae, Battle Chef Brigade and Iconoclasts, which all turned out well in my opinion. That way you can see for yourself before you ordered, but I would recommend them, and with Dust:AET being one of my favourite games, I think they did a great job overall with it, better than most other companies likely would have done.
@Tyranexx I’ve ordered mine from Play Asia. I’ve had really good packaging quality from them before, although their shipping and import costs add up to be quite expensive in my experience. I’d recommend bulk ordering to save money if you can.
Also, if there’s a preorder in your order, I’m pretty sure you can set it so everything ships when it does. Although I did read, and I’m not sure whether this is correct or not, that they don’t hold orders in these situations, so if everything in your order only ships when your last preorder releases, some of those orders may have already sold out, and thus wouldn’t be included. I’ve never tried this though.
Amazon.co.jp is another option, I think they either have global shipping or almost global shipping too.
@tameshiyaku I’m assuming you’re talking about some of their releases from a few years ago? I’ve received six of their Switch releases so far, and all of them look amazing, and with the consistent inclusion of interior art and instruction booklets, they’re above the level of the average retail publisher in my opinion.
I hope it gets a physical release, it’d look great next to Pirate’s Curse and Half-Genie Hero.
I hope if they’re using the animal transformations again that they refine it a little. I preferred what Monster Boy did, having a smaller number of transformations, but giving them all a lot of unique skills and a proper purpose. Some of the Half-Genie Hero transformations felt pretty shallow, like the tree that just lets you produce an endless number of healing fruit.
@BensonUii Yeah I didn’t think about that, I don’t like that either. For example I really wish I could have had Joker on the Smash Ultimate cart, that would’ve been amazing.
But as far as I remember, Image & Form have only released dlc once before with Heist, so as long as it doesn’t release with any bugs, there’s a chance it could be the full package.
I’ve only played a few minutes of it on someone else’s xbox, but I’ll definitely be getting this physical. The visuals alone make it a worthwhile purchase for me, and hopefully the gameplay will be satisfying too.
Definitely excited for this, I’ve heard great things about it, and it looks fun.
@60frames-please If they follow what they’ve done for the four Switch releases I’ve received from them so far, it should have nice interior/reversible artwork and an instruction booklet.
@wratih9 Even ignoring Bomberman, you’d think the success of classic Castlevania-like games like Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon would show there’s a market for these games. Also I think the abundance of metroidvanias on the Switch should show how lucrative that market is, especially for an already well-known series like Castlevania.
@BanjoPickles That would be awesome, I’d probably just go for the metroidvania one though. I don’t know what they’d do about the second screen in the DS games. Maybe put the info screen on the right like Fairune Collection?
Just preordered the collector’s edition and the Wanderer’s Journal. This is one of the coolest looking collector’s editions I’ve seen in a while, and the journal looks amazing!
This was such a fun game, I’d easily recommend at least trying the demo. Although keep in mind it does introduce a lot of interesting elements later on, so if it seems simple at first, maybe look up some later gameplay.
@Medic_alert Oh, what it is it then? Paying a flat rate to play games sounded like Netflix or something, so I thought it was like that? Are you able to download a few on the service for a short time or something?
@Slitth If I get what you’re saying, I think that would turn a lot of physical collectors and buyers off. Having that game to play after the console has stopped being supported is a large part of the appeal for many, and if they can’t play the games without an account, then I don’t see how that would appeal to people when at some point they won’t be able to log into their account anymore. If a machine broke, and you had to buy a new one off eBay 20 years from now, I don’t think you’d still be able to log in to play your games (I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t, but maybe that’s different than the online store, but I doubt it).
@Gs69 Yep, same here. Seeing all my Switch games on a shelf is just really satisfying, and even if I have to wait weeks for a game to arrive in the mail, I’d still rather do that than go digital so I can get that experience of opening it up and adding it to my collection. Plus then there’s the owning it rather than the license to play it, and taking up less space with many releases, especially with the cartridges rather than discs, and I would hate for the games industry to abandon physical media.
Buying a console like an Xbox just to play everything on a gaming streaming service sounds awful to me.
@EvrgrnCmln Yeah, it’s weird how often the physical copies seem to drop in price much faster and get sales more often than the digital ones. The only games I ever download digitally are eshop exclusives, I don’t take the Switch on the go enough for switching cartridges to be a hassle.
That’s awesome that you got to go to Canada though, it looks like it’s got a lot of great scenery. That’s a country I’d like to visit someday, partially to see where Schitt’s Creek and Heartland are filmed.
@EvrgrnCmln Oh, I’m from Australia too, I just converted it roughly to U.S. currency because that seems to be the most common currency to use when talking price.
Yeah, that’s fair I guess, it does sound pretty expensive when you put it like that haha. Did you get it digitally or physically? I collect physical games (I don’t collect whole console libraries or anything, just the ones that interest me - I’ve got around 35 physical Switch games currently) and the awesome looking case, with the interior artwork and instruction booklet made it feel more worth the price, and I can understand why it would seem a bit expensive for people who bought it physically or just don’t place as much importance on that stuff.
@EvrgrnCmln I guess it’s different for everyone. I paid at least $45 (can’t remember the exact number) and I definitely found it to be worth the money. After collecting everything I got about 35 hours out of it, which is about how long I got out of Odyssey, and it was a ton of fun.
I’d recommend that any platformer/metroidvania fan at least tried out the demo. I 100% completed it over Christmas (with a tiny bit of help from wikis) and it was amazing. Some of the puzzles and platforming challenges around 70% of the way in can be very difficult, but it’s a really fun game, with great music and animation.
@BenAV I agree, it’s slightly annoying now, but in the long run I’d much rather have a more polished game and I’d ESPECIALLY rather have all the content on the cartridge than a dlc download. In the meantime I’ve got plenty of other games to get around to.
I completely missed this on 3DS, so I’m excited to see if it looks like my thing or not. A lot of people seem to be pretty excited, so that’s a good sign.
@TheLightningYu Yeah, this was sort of reminding me of Dragon’s Crown when I was watching the trailers. Have you played DMFD solo, and if so, how enjoyable was it? I know I really enjoyed playing through a fair amount of Dragon’s Crown in single player, and if this game is as good as that was without co-op, then it definitely sounds worth it to me.

They could make Pokémon itself more exciting, rather than trying to upstage it with a new IP. A new Pokémon game that looks like it’s making real evolutions to the formula could help the team stay refreshed, it doesn’t need to always be the same thing.
Re: Cytus Alpha Physical Release Due Out In North America Next Month
I can wait for it, just longer to save the money. I love that they’ve been bringing these Rayark games out physically, Voez, Deemo and Cytus will look great together on a shelf.
Re: Super Rare Games Announces A Handful Of Physical Releases For Nintendo Switch
Toki Tori’s a definite buy. Everything else I need to see some gameplay first, but it sounds like a great lineup of games.
Re: Giga Wrecker Alt. Is Receiving A Limited Run Physical Release
The art is nice and it looks like it could be fun, I might end up getting this if the reviews are mostly positive. I still hope Night in the Woods gets a release soon, I’ve been waiting to play that one since it came out.
Re: VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action Opens Up For Business On Switch In May
@tameshiyaku I’ve only ever gotten Switch releases from them, and they’ve never just had blank back or interior art.
Re: Review: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy - An Especially Fine Courtroom Drama
Re: VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action Opens Up For Business On Switch In May
@tameshiyaku I’m assuming you’re talking about some of their releases from a few years ago? I’ve received six of their Switch releases so far, and all of them look amazing, and with the consistent inclusion of interior art and instruction booklets, they’re above the level of the average retail publisher in my opinion.
Re: Review: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy - An Especially Fine Courtroom Drama
Cant wait to finally see what these are like when my Japanese import arrives. What is it with Capcom and skipping on physical releases in the West?
Re: WayForward Announces Shantae 5, Arrives On Nintendo Switch Later This Year
I hope it gets a physical release, it’d look great next to Pirate’s Curse and Half-Genie Hero.
Re: SteamWorld Quest Physical Edition Expected To Arrive This Year
@BensonUii Yeah I didn’t think about that, I don’t like that either. For example I really wish I could have had Joker on the Smash Ultimate cart, that would’ve been amazing.
But as far as I remember, Image & Form have only released dlc once before with Heist, so as long as it doesn’t release with any bugs, there’s a chance it could be the full package.
Re: Cuphead Physical Release Confirmed For Nintendo Switch
I’ve only played a few minutes of it on someone else’s xbox, but I’ll definitely be getting this physical. The visuals alone make it a worthwhile purchase for me, and hopefully the gameplay will be satisfying too.
Re: SteamWorld Quest Physical Edition Expected To Arrive This Year
I’ll probably be saving this to play at Christmas, so sometime this year’s fine with me, I’m just glad it’s getting a physical release.
Now I just hope the Switch eventually gets the physical Steamworld Collection containing Dig and Heist that the PS4 and Wii U got.
Re: Nitrome's Bomb Chicken Is Receiving A Limited Run Physical Release On Switch
Definitely excited for this, I’ve heard great things about it, and it looks fun.
@60frames-please If they follow what they’ve done for the four Switch releases I’ve received from them so far, it should have nice interior/reversible artwork and an instruction booklet.
Re: Australian Ratings Board Suggests A Multi-Platform 'Castlevania Anniversary Collection' Is On The Way
@wratih9 Even ignoring Bomberman, you’d think the success of classic Castlevania-like games like Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon would show there’s a market for these games.
Re: Hollow Knight Collector's Edition Now Available To Pre-Order
Just preordered the collector’s edition and the Wanderer’s Journal. This is one of the coolest looking collector’s editions I’ve seen in a while, and the journal looks amazing!
Re: FDG Entertainment Releasing Monster Boy Demo On Switch eShop Later This Week
This was such a fun game, I’d easily recommend at least trying the demo. Although keep in mind it does introduce a lot of interesting elements later on, so if it seems simple at first, maybe look up some later gameplay.
Re: Talking Point: Could Nintendo Ditch Physical Media With A 'Switch Lite?'
@Medic_alert Oh, what it is it then? Paying a flat rate to play games sounded like Netflix or something, so I thought it was like that? Are you able to download a few on the service for a short time or something?
Re: Talking Point: Could Nintendo Ditch Physical Media With A 'Switch Lite?'
Re: Talking Point: Could Nintendo Ditch Physical Media With A 'Switch Lite?'
Re: Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom Appears To Be Getting A Switch Demo
@RadioShadow Haha thanks, I actually meant that as a confused “but it does have a physical release” but I probably worded it confusingly.
Re: Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom Appears To Be Getting A Switch Demo
@EvrgrnCmln That’s awesome! Could you see many horses around there? Did you see any of the main cast?
@zool This does have a physical though?
Re: Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom Appears To Be Getting A Switch Demo
@EvrgrnCmln Yeah, it’s weird how often the physical copies seem to drop in price much faster and get sales more often than the digital ones. The only games I ever download digitally are eshop exclusives, I don’t take the Switch on the go enough for switching cartridges to be a hassle.
That’s awesome that you got to go to Canada though, it looks like it’s got a lot of great scenery. That’s a country I’d like to visit someday, partially to see where Schitt’s Creek and Heartland are filmed.
Re: Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom Appears To Be Getting A Switch Demo
Re: Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom Appears To Be Getting A Switch Demo
@EvrgrnCmln I guess it’s different for everyone. I paid at least $45 (can’t remember the exact number) and I definitely found it to be worth the money. After collecting everything I got about 35 hours out of it, which is about how long I got out of Odyssey, and it was a ton of fun.
Re: Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom Appears To Be Getting A Switch Demo
I’d recommend that any platformer/metroidvania fan at least tried out the demo. I 100% completed it over Christmas (with a tiny bit of help from wikis) and it was amazing. Some of the puzzles and platforming challenges around 70% of the way in can be very difficult, but it’s a really fun game, with great music and animation.
Re: Yacht Club Games Has Delayed Shovel Knight: King Of Cards
@BenAV I agree, it’s slightly annoying now, but in the long run I’d much rather have a more polished game and I’d ESPECIALLY rather have all the content on the cartridge than a dlc download. In the meantime I’ve got plenty of other games to get around to.
Re: Rune Factory 5 Scheduled To Arrive In 2020 On Nintendo Switch
I completely missed this on 3DS, so I’m excited to see if it looks like my thing or not. A lot of people seem to be pretty excited, so that’s a good sign.
Re: Review: The Way Remastered (Switch eShop)
I’ve never tried any games like Another World before, but at $1.59 AUS it sounds like a steal.
Re: Review: Dragon: Marked for Death - An Attractive Action Title That's All Burned Out When It Comes To Fresh Ideas
