Update: Merge Games has now clarified the Rise of the Giant DLC will still need to be downloaded.
The Action Game of the Year Edition is aimed at players who haven't tried the game yet, and celebrates Dead Cells' 1 year anniversary!
If you haven't picked up a physical copy of the wonderful roguelike / Metroidvania hit Dead Cells yet, you might want to hold off just a little longer. Motion Twin has revealed publisher Merge Games will be releasing a Dead Cells - Action Game of the Year physical edition for the Switch and PlayStation 4 this August.
This updated hard copy of Dead Cells will include a key ring, art book and reversible cover. Most importantly, you'll also get access to the recently released "Rise of the Giant" DLC.
This physical release is to celebrate a momentous first year, with sales of Dead Cells surpassing two million units. It will arrive in North America on 20th August and shortly after in Europe on 23rd August.

Or just buy it anyway to have a physical copy and sell what you don't want.
That’s awesome, the first physical copy was the version that lead to my game freezing every time I tried to start it, so it’ll be great to have a working version all on the cart.
I wish more games got “definitive edition” style releases with all the dlc, it makes the physical version feel more worth it. Speaking of which I can’t wait for the Shovel Knight Treasure Trove Physical release too, that’ll be jam-packed with content.
Edit:
Where did you see that the dlc was on the cartridge? I’ve been looking at their post on Twitter, and it doesn’t look like they’ve confirmed that it will be on the cartridge itself, just that it’s included.
I hope it’s all there, but their collector’s edition of Darkest Dungeon was the exact same cartridge as the Ancestral Edition, with the extra dlc being downloadable via the internet, so I’m a bit skeptical until they confirm it.
so is it a online selling only or will there be actual copies in stores?
Ah well, I got the physical when it first came out
The game looks interesting but why rogue-like? I have never understood the concept. Is every time you reset the game the levels have different layout? Is that rogue-like?
Never got around to picking this up, so seems rude not to get the complete edition. Sorted.
@Zuljaras With most roguelikes (or roguelites) I've played you have permadeath and the levels reconfigure themselves for each playthrough. You usually have a permanent skill tree though that means you're better equipped each time for a good run (pretty sure that's true here). Some use human designed rooms that are configured in a different order each playthrough, rather than completely procedurally generated levels. The idea being that the games can be tough without you just playing the exact same level over and over again and can provide huge replayability as it is a slightly different experience each time.
I don't particularly like Roguelites but I'm thoroughly enjoying this one. I think it's still 20% off now, in case anyone's interested.
@BionicDodo Hmm interesting. I LOVE metroidvania games that has a purpose other than some scores etc. Like Castlevania, so this might me my first rogue-like game.
@Zuljaras Of the ones I've played, I kinda drifted away from Immortal Redneck long before I got very far in, I've played a fair bit of Enter the Gungeon but not really got very far and I have sunk a ridiculous amount of time into Spelunky and Rogue Legacy and love both to bits. I've heard this one is as good as they get though.
Will Dead Cells get any more DLC, or was Rise of the Giant the final piece? If it's getting more down the line, then I don't really see the point in getting this as it will be redundant as well.
So it's just a reprint with an update that includes the DLC on-cart, as opposed to continually reprinting the original release without the same free DLC?
I mean that makes sense, reprints of games historically have always had newer versions of the game on them. It even happened with 3DS games like Smash Bros for 3DS and Animal Crossing New Leaf, later versions shipped with the amiibo compatible updates.
@RupeeClock Merge Games confirmed on Twitter that that it’s not all on the cartridge. Someone asked “dlc on cart?”, and they said “No, it will be a download ”. In another reply they called it an update, so I’m assuming update means requiring the internet?
It’s not confirmed if this includes a later version than launch, but just before the dlc, but that seems like a strange choice, and I’m assuming it’s just the launch edition in new packaging. Not even a beneficial code for better value, since the dlc’s free anyway. They also said it’s primarily aimed at new players that haven’t tried it yet, so it doesn’t sound like a release worth getting unless you’e never played it or really want the keychain, new box art paper and different manual.
@cacnea310
Oh, well that's contradictory.
The article says that the DLC will be on the game card, but if that's no true then there's no advantage to buying an updated copy of the game at all.
Physical releases of games which are DLC complete is a standard practice after all, and it's what any preservationist will prefer when the DLC is lost to the system's CDN going offline.
@RupeeClock I assume the author of the article assumed it would be on the cart since that’s what would make the most sense, as everything seems to point to the contrary.
Yeah this release really seems pointless to me, just a dressed-up re-release of the same game, just now with the box telling you about the stuff you would’ve gotten anyway. I wish the dlc was on the cart itself, that way it would have potentially been worth a repurchase for collectors and preservationists.
Slightly similar situation with the recent Hollow Knight release. I love that it’s such a nice collector’s edition, and having most of the dlc is better than none, but not including all the content that was available at the time in a physical release seems like wasted potential, and is a bit disappointing.
@cacnea310 @RupeeClock I've updated the article to reflect this.
Definitely picking this up. Had the physical version on my to-get list for quite awhile so I'm happy that I waited.
@Zuljaras
Others have explained what rogue-lite is, but to answer why:
Since you restart every time you die or win, which takes no longer than 90 minutes, rouge-lite elements keep the game from becoming monotonous. 100 hours later this game is still FRESH!
What's randomized: 1) The layout of each stage, though rooms are pulled from a gigantic library of rooms, which prevents the generated stages from being butt ugly and weird 2) Items that you find along the way: there are about 70 weapons/shield and 30 skills to find along your way. I never mind dying because it's always exciting to start a new run because you never know what combination of items you'll find synergy with & 3) Rooms are randomly populated with enemies, so each battle challenges you to adapt, which for me, is very stimulating.
I think it's a great game if you can't tell!
