Re: First UK Wii U Television Advertisement Breaks Cover

Zaphod_Beeblebrox

I think it's a very good ad. But then I despise 99% of advertising so maybe I have "bad" taste in ads. This is my kind of ad.

The last ad campaign I can remember really, really liking was the Volkswagen "It's time to unpimp the auto" ads. When I was fast-forwarding through ads on the DVR I'd spot one of those and back up and watch it. Then rewind and watch it again. And again.

You have tunnel vision in those mascot suits. May have seen you but probably didn't see your arm. Listening to the commentary tracks on DVDs, they talk about stunt people or extras dressed up in crazy monster suits and how they are almost completely blind and helpless (ironic since they are supposed to be scary, deadly monsters).

Re: Wii U Pre-Order Guide

Zaphod_Beeblebrox

Glad I pre-ordered from Best Buy yesterday before they started selling out their first allotment. Phew.

I hope there will be some good online games for Nintendo Lifers to play together on the Wii U (like they're currently playing Mario Kart on the 3DS). Dragon Quest X would be cool (if the monthly fee is reasonable and the game is released in the west).

I'm thinking The Wonderful 101, Pikmin, Scribblenauts, Epic Mickey, and Toki Tori. I'm curious about Warriors Orochi. IGN gave the PS3 version an 8.5, saying it was great. Anyone have any opinions about it? It's classified as "Action" but does it also have some RPG elements? I'm a sucker for anything which even remotely resembles an RPG. Big Xenoblade fan here. (Would also probably be a Last Story fan if my Wii's disc drive hadn't died before the game was released. Looking forward to picking it up when I get the Wii U.)

Re: New Super Mario Bros. 2 Typo Isn't So Golden

Zaphod_Beeblebrox

I've been shopping for e-books a lot lately since I bought a tablet (Nexus 7) and it's amazing how many grammatical errors (grammos?) and typos there are in publisher book descriptions. You'd think publishers would have editors to review everything before it goes public. But they just don't seem to care.

Re: Wii U Will be a 'Great Value Proposition'

Zaphod_Beeblebrox

My gut feeling is $299 for the capability I've seen. I'd have been willing to pay more for a more powerful console but most people want consoles to be cheap (first and foremost). So, performance-wise, we're getting what the majority are willing to pay for.

I'm willing to pay $0 for white. Black or no sale.

Re: Talking Point: Are E3 Conferences a Dying Breed?

Zaphod_Beeblebrox

The only part of E3 which can't be done on the web is the hands-on demos. Everything else can be done better and cheaper on the web, IMHO.

It will be interesting to see if Microsoft and Sony keep their secrets until next E3. If they announce on the web instead, that will really say something about E3.

Re: Pinball Arcade: The Twilight Zone Hits Kickstarter Target

Really looking forward to Pinball Arcade on the Wii U. I've played the wheels off Pinball Hall of Fame (Williams and Gottlieb) on the Wii.

I wish there were some way to bring back the old Pro Pinball tables by Cunning Developments (published by Empire Interactive): The Web, Timeshock!, Big Race USA, and Fantastic Journey. They were original games (not based on real-world tables) but they were realistic pinball, not "fantasy" pinball. My favorite was Timeshock! but I enjoyed them all.

Re: Talking Point: The Good and Bad Sides of Moderating Miiverse

Zaphod_Beeblebrox

Parental controls are hopeless. 99.9% of parents rely on their kids to set up electronics. Nintendo knows this. And 99.9% of parents who miraculously manage to set up parental controls will forget the password and therefore there has to be a way to reset the parental controls. Nintendo and kids both know this.

So the existence of parental controls will not change anything. Parental controls exist so companies can say they have them ("check that box"). But they never assume they'll actually be used effectively. Certainly not Nintendo.

Re: Nintendo to Offer Triple Layer of Miiverse Moderation

Monitoring racism, sexism, profanity, intimidation, and illegal activities hour after hour, day after day, month after month, year after year. And Nintendo has to do this around the world in how many different languages? I suppose there is a strong marketing incentive behind this. Nintendo said Miiverse will show Miis congregating around games which the console owner doesn't necessarily own. So casual gamers will be alerted to the existence of games they might not otherwise have learned about (since they don't shop for games, don't surf gaming web sites or forums, etc.).

Edit: I just now finished listening to the podcast where the marketing angle was discussed. So, yeah, I'm late to the party on that one.

If messages among friends are instant, no problem. But if messages among friends are delayed, this is going to be a completely useless feature because people will have to use phones or laptops for instant communication instead.

The best place to get answers when you are stuck in a game is a FAQ or guide on a site like GameFAQs (yes, I know the forums can be a zoo...I'm talking about FAQs and guides). Using public messages on Miiverse will be a waste of time. The most helpful answer you could give to someone on Miiverse is to refer them to a resource on the web.

In summary:

Instant messaging among friends: cool.
Delayed public messaging: a novelty without much practical value.

Re: Poll: Which Colour Wii U Would You Prefer?

Zaphod_Beeblebrox

I'll definitely wait for Black. The launch-window games aren't targeted at me, anyway. I'm one of those weirdos who likes games like Xenoblade, Rune Factory, Harvest Moon, Little King's Story, Fishing Resort, Geometry Wars: Galaxies, A Boy and His Blob. Games which sells thousands of copies, not millions.
