Re: Feature: Reflections on 20 Years of Pokemon

@PlywoodStick No, the RNG wasn't rigged, it just can seem that way because you often had to win many difficult matches in a row. You had to be consistent and leave as little as possible to chance.

And Pokemon Stadium aside, the original 3 generations are much, much more difficult than the recent ones. Particularly the original 2 regions.

Re: Feature: Reflections on 20 Years of Pokemon

My favorite part about Pokemon was training up pokemon in Crystal and Yellow for Pokemon Stadium 2. That game is by far the hardest game I have ever played, and I love it for that reason. It was the perfect complement to the main games.

I'm beyond resentful with how offensively, thoughtlessly easy the newer games have become. In Pokemon X/Y, you could literally beat the game without paying the slightest attention to what you're doing. And experience share?? Probably designed with multi-tasking in mind, so you can beat the game with your ass while freeing up your hands to do other things. Or in OR/AS, why not just hand you a legendary pokemon for no reason after, what, the fourth or fifth gym? To me, difficulty and challenge (you know, actually feeling like you're accomplishing something) is what makes Pokemon games so much fun. The newer games, to me, just feel like wastes of time.

Re: Preview: Punching Pikachus in Pokkén Tournament

Wow, I was not expecting such a positive review. Although I'm a little confused about the presentation. First the writer says it's wonderful, then she/he says the announcer is terribly annoying. I guess I'm wondering what about about the presentation is great

Re: Talking Point: The Time is Right for a Nintendo Direct

At this point I doubt they have enough left to talk about for the first half of 2016.
They should have withheld information on many Pokken tournament fighters for a Nintendo Direct announcement, along with all their new Twilight Princess footage and details. Then announce new Star Fox features, and talk about Fire Emblem. Then throw in more 3DS stuff (I don't actually follow 3DS releases much anymore) like Detective Pikachu and whatever else is getting buzz and it's a solid direct. Plus, if they have Pikmin 4 or Paper Mario in the works, the direct would be great.

Re: Here's How Much Of Your Wii U's Internal Memory Pokkén Tournament Will Gobble Up

Zapazoid

I really want to be excited for this game, but $60 for a 16-character fighting game with basically no other modes? I can understand this being worth it to super-competitive people, but to those that just play for fun this is another way-overpriced Wii U game. Zelda TP HD $60, this, Starfox (no doubt)...Nintendo is honestly just trying to milk Wii U owners who have nothing else to play for their money at this point.

Re: Video: Nintendo Reminds Us of Just How Much DLC We Had for Super Smash Bros.

One interesting Spin-off of smash that they could do to keep making Smash games without having to top the predecessor in content (i.e., not a replacement of the original-style smash, but in addition) is to make themed Smash games. Rather than jam every Nintendo franchise into one game, they focus on delving in depth into a single franchise using the same Smash core gameplay.

For example, consider a Pokemon Smash. You have the basic smash formula, with all Pokemon characters and stages. Maybe have 25-30 characters. You tweak the items to make it a more poke-centric experience--different types of poke balls, potions, equip items, etc.
Then, with that core experience in place, you focus on other features--for example, a trainer customization mode, where you can customize a pokemon trainer character to use three pokemon, i.e. Brawl. You can customize his appearance, the custom moves of the pokemon, etc. Then you throw in tournament modes based off the Indigo League Silver Conference, etc, with prizes being character/stage unlocks. Also have a Battle Tower mode, probably as a replacement to Classic, where you have to beat consecutively-more difficult matches without losing in the style of the games. Other features could include a slot machine for coins, a stadium-editor, etc.

The key for this game would be to make it FEEL like Pokemon, not Smash with a pokemon skin. The characters, stages, items, and game modes would go a long way towards this, but you would also need this to be reflected in the presentation. For example, have an option to turn on a Pokemon-style announcer from the original series. In certain modes (like the tournament mode) you could also have an option to have small cut-scenes that depict trainers throwing out the pokemon onto the battlefield, reacting to wins and losses, etc.

Re: Masahiro Sakurai on Keeping Super Smash Bros. Fresh

Zapazoid

Yeah, Sakurai's right, that's why there's typically such a huge gap between releases. The smash hype goes in phases:
1. Pre-pre release (building hype)
2. Pre-release (max hype)
3. Release (Maintained hype)
4. Post-release (diminishing hype)
5. Post-post release (Stale--dead hype)

Right now I'd say we're somewhere around stage 4, depending on the person, of course.
