Pokkén Tournament - a glorious mash-up of Pokémon and Tekken - is due for worldwide release on the Wii U on March 18th, and Nintendo has updated the game page on the eShop with more details on control options, online features and file size.
While the game is being released alongside its own unique controller, you'll be able to use the following input devices to play it:
- Wii U Pro Controller
- Wii Remote + Classic Controller Pro
- Wii Remote
- Wii Remote + Nunchuck
- Wii U GamePad
In terms of online it's not much of a shock - you'll be able to play against people over the net and post your best scores on leaderboards - and the download size is pretty reasonable, too. Pokkén Tournament will occupy around 4234.4MB of space on your Wii U (or your external hard drive).

I hope they announce some more characters. 18(?) fighters is not a lot for $60.
I really like it whenever they give you a ton of controller option.
"You don't like the Gamepad? You can use the Pro Controller, the Wiimote, the Nunchuck, the Classic, the Gamecube, the 3DS, your mother and this rock taped to a banana!".
Nonetheless, I'll probably buy it used.
@Dakt Actually, almost every Smash character is pretty viable, if you know how to use them.
Any single-player or local multiplayer modes been added to this yet? Apart from the "play a match, rinses and repeat" mode.
Already have it pre ordered from Amazon, two of my all time favs Pokemon and Tekken.
I have really not been able to get into Smash Bros, have been waiting impatiently for this game since I first heard about it.
I've been dreaming of a Pokemon fighting game since I was only one year old. Not even kidding!
Considering how much tekken tag wiiu edition took up I'm surprised how low it is
I need to get a hdd soon I'm buying disc bundle for amibo card and I always loved tekken but got tired and didn't like 6 so this might just be the shake up it needs with the added guilty pleasure of Pokemon lol
I also think this will be great online and agreed smash is hard to keep up with especially if buying amibo iv stayed clear of the smash ones as I'd want to have the lot lol
@Dakt I agree. Sure when I first got Blazblue and saw that there was only 12 fighters I was disappointed. The more I played it the more I saw that the less fighters you have the more diverse and unique each character was.
They were able to spend more time on each fighter then having say 24 and only have half of the uniqueness.
Well, my birthday is right after this comes out... I can't wait!
But will the physical release require a large chunk of HD space to run smoothly too?
DLC would be most appreciated, still hoping for Infernape and maybe another Unova Pokemon.
@Dakt The gameplay is nothing like Tekken
I'm still on the fence with this one.
@Dakt I agree with you on the amount of characters, some fighting games have way too many and I wouldn't even use half of them.
Like, one of the only Wii u games I've been looking towards. Can't wait!
This is totally going to be a day one purchase for me, and probably with the special controller too
@Krisi Not at a competitive level. You can't walk into EVO and win with Dedede or Zelda, regardless of how much work you put in.
As badly as I want this, Zelda comes out only two weeks prior, so that will probably still be keeping me occupied.
@Octane When most people tend to only play 1 or 2 characters. 16 is plenty. That said, it makes for some boring tournaments because everyone plays the same character.
Then again Smash has almost 60 characters and most people play Sheik or ZSS.
so super happy i dont need to buy any more controllers . yeah they are too expensive, im looking at you 11-year-old wii mote.
@fed0ra7 Winning Evo amd competivly viable are two completely different things dude
Been awhile since I seen or played a Wii U game that supports Wii Remote + Nunchuck. Time to clean the dust off.
I'll be so happy if they give you the option of getting the free amiibo card by mail if you download it and call Nintendo's support line like with Super Mario Maker. A long shot I know.
Day one to me. Pre-download if possible.
@Dakt
The gameplay is more close Soul Calibur mixed with elements from Gotcha Force.
That's surprisingly small. Wasn't Tekken Tag Tournament 2 over 15 gigs? I know that game had about 60 fighters, but the size disparity is interesting.
@Dakt @Spin I don't want 60 fighters, but a couple more would be appreciated (although I think a Pokémon fighting game would lend itself better to a high number of fighters than Smash, due to the 700+ Pokémon that exist).
I'm not a big online player, so most of my time is spend solo offline and the occasional co-op. As far as I'm aware, there isn't a story more, and since there are only 16 characters, I'm not sure how long the game would hold my interest. I guess it's a ''fair'' price if you're planning on playing this competetively, but for someone like me, $60 is a little too much for (hopefully) 10-15 hours of play time.
I really want to play this game. But it seems way too barebones for $60. I'll wait for a big price drop. Or else I might just rent it.
I don't buy games online, I prefer the physical option, but I probably won't be getting this for a couple months anyways
Glad I can use the pro controller and play the game on the gamepad screen, love that about Wii U games.
I agree with alot of people though, 15 characters, plus another variety on pikachu, definitely isn't alot of characters considering how many pokemon there is. That really makes me want to wait and see if they add more characters before buying.
Forgive me if I'm wrong I didn't see that pokken tournament controller in the list? Please don't tell me it's a two player exclusive thing
On an unrelated note, using this site on a phone is awful now.
@Dakt Sure, it's much harder to win using some characters, but believe me, I've seen some insanely good Donkey Kong and Charizard players. Actually, this might be the most balanced Smash game yet.
Also, most people who played the arcade version say Gengar is by far the strongest fighter in the game. It doesn't really seem that balanced, and I'm not sure if they will really change the characters in the Wii U version.
I don't know what to think of this game. I have no interest in Pokémon, but this game does look sort of cool. I don't like most of the fighting games, but I do like Smash...
Maybe I'll pick Pokkén up when it's cheaper.
@Octane For $60, that's the average size of a Fighting Game roster from what I know, a lot of people here on NLife have their expectations set way too high with Smash's huge and girthy roster
Woo getting this retail but I'm on pins and needles!
I personally cannot stand Pokemon, but I always enjoyed Tekken, and I think I will be pleasantly surprised by this game, so I think I will get it day one. It's over the top and colourful, which is my type of game
That's not bad.
Roughly 4GB is less than Oddworld by half
I'm actually really excited for Pokken, I'll need something to relax with between losing matches in Street Fighter V.
I really want to be excited for this game, but $60 for a 16-character fighting game with basically no other modes? I can understand this being worth it to super-competitive people, but to those that just play for fun this is another way-overpriced Wii U game. Zelda TP HD $60, this, Starfox (no doubt)...Nintendo is honestly just trying to milk Wii U owners who have nothing else to play for their money at this point.
$60/€59 is a lot for a game that just has 16 characters with being conscious of the fact that it as 300+ roster potential in a time where we are used to fighting games with atleast 30+ characters.
I said it many times before. Gamefreak should incorporate this game mechanic into the main games as its main battle style with rpg elements. Its gonna take lot of work and effort for GF to pull that off i know (i think even more then Destiny) but at the same i believe it will result in the best pokemon game possible for the future. And they can re-use the mechanics for future games too.
I really loved the turn based system up untill now. But c'mon. We all grew up with the anime and how active all the pokemon seemed in battle compared to the games. And even now, with XYORAS its all nice that they are 3D and they appear more life like but all the action is still very stiff and a lot of it still lies within youre own imagination.
So why is this going into EVO? I look at it as slow gameplay and blinding with those special effects as a joke to be played at EVO. I don't get it.
I've got this and the controller pre-ordered for day 1. If I like this I may pick up Tekken Tag Tournament 2 as well.
I'm pretty sure this game, in terms of gameplay, is nothing like Tekken and more like Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm.
I hope the Tatsunoko Vs Capcom fight pad will work. It functions like the the Wii Classic controller.
@AltDotNerd If it functions like a classic controller, it'll work as long as Pokken doesn't force the analog stick for the controls.
@AltDotNerd @ASonic3582 The TvC stick can emulate d-pad as well as left analog stick, so it should work fine.
So this game doesn't have any single player "story" mode? I ask that based on some of the comments above.
