Re: Sega Rolling Out New Update For Sonic Origins, Here's What's Included

UltraZelda64

@Jhena With many of the absolute biggest, most annoying bugs now eliminated, the game really is getting there. If only it shipped in a state more like this right from the beginning. It still needs work--a lot of it--but at least certain major bugs that would make you not want to continue playing it are now fixed.

Now to be fair, that is something we should never have to celebrate--but here we are, 2022. Sega, no real difference from a decade or two ago.

Re: Sega Rolling Out New Update For Sonic Origins, Here's What's Included

UltraZelda64

You know, after having read the complete patch list... now THAT is an update! They have squashed several (though not all) of the worst bugs, and countless ones I would have probably never known about. Honestly... that is quite impressive. At least about five of the bugs were so bad they should've never been in a retail product to begin with--but on top of those it looks like Sega really has been busy.

I still hope to see continued bug fixes, and if the next patch is as big as this one I think I'll be happy!

Still though, I would like to see them go beyond just bug fixes. Please Sega, don't stop there! I would like to see improvements to the save systems of all the games except Sonic 3&K; the ability to disable autosave, manually save the current game, and manage/delete save files. And when continuing, allow us to pick which save file/character to load!

Plus better menu integration and make certain system-wide settings per-game settings instead. For example, let me pause the game I'm currently playing when in classic mode and select the border for that game. Why can't I have a Sonic border for Sonic 1, a Metal Sonic or Amy border for Sonic CD, and a Tails border for Sonic 2? Why can't I select in-game, and have it remember per game? Come on Sega! Seriously, they could really have something truly great here if they just go all the way.

I really wish you could loop all the songs that would normally loop in the sound test... I could listen to Final Zone, Boss [S1], Emerald Hill, Aquatic Ruin, Casino Night, Mystic Cave [S2], and others for like 5-10 minutes each...

Re: Hot Lap League Is A Slick Arcade Racer, And It's Out Now

UltraZelda64

I was interested enough to buy it. At first glance, I absolute despise the controls. By default, you don't even have to press a button to give your car gas--it just goes on its own. Luckily, auto-accelerate is a switchable option in the game's settings, so you can turn this crap off.

But I still have problems with the in-game controls. B is gas and Y doubles as either brake/reverse or powerslide, depending on whether you hold it in or tap it around turns. This is a Nintendo console, with a Nintendo controller, with a design originating with the NES and its face buttons refined to what they are today with the NES--this default button is absolutely atrocious on the Switch, and it cannot be changed in the settings. Come on developers, this is not a PlayStation or Xbox!

To make it even worse, I have noticed that some things in the menus seem to use B for OK (same with the race results screen)--and again this is a Nintendo, that is NOT okay! It took me a fair amount of time to figure out just how the controls work in the menus, because they seem inconsistent--sometimes A is OK and B is Back like they should be, but I have seen some things where B seems to act as OK. WTF?!? This inconsistency is confusing.

Last, the A button during any race instantly restarts the race, no questions asked, and I don't think I need to say why that is a bad thing--but making this even worse is the fact that it is mapped to A. Again, with no way to change. Why not just put this potentially dangerous feature out of the way, remap it to the "-" button or something? But of course, the game doesn't allow you!

I have to say that the game is pretty fun, but I don't think I can forgive the developers' sloppy button configuration, and the fact that they cannot be simply remapped in-game is unforgivable. A shame, because the controls, I feel, really do take the enjoyment out of this game.

Potentially fun game, very sloppy port like so many touchscreen-based/mobile games.

Re: Sega Rolling Out New Update For Sonic Origins, Here's What's Included

UltraZelda64

@PrinceRetro A properly finished, completed game to begin with, that doesn't need countless post-release updates just to bring up to decent retail standards? This update fixes what I would say are three of the biggest bugs with the game, but there are countless others. And that is only the bugs! There are numerous problems with this compilation's menus/overall presentation and save system, and who knows if any of that will ever be fixed. At this point I'm honestly not betting on it.

Still, these are some very welcome, much-needed fixes--but I hope Sega doesn't just stop at the bare minimum. They need to give this compilation the polish and attention to detail it deserves, which they should have done from the very beginning. These fixes shouldn't have even been needed to begin with, but here you go--Sega's lack of quality control standards continues here up into 2022.

Some things never seem to change, no matter how many decades the hardcore fans beg Sega for better treatment of their favorite franchises.

Re: Soapbox: 20 Years Later, Super Mario Sunshine Is Still The Best 3D Mario

UltraZelda64

I didn't like Sunshine--I sold my copy of the game decades ago (something I almost never do) and I would never even put it above Mario 64 (even though Mario 64 is showing its age much more in countless ways).

I wasn't a fan of FLUDD, the world design was just bland to me, and the entire island theme (both the artwork and the music) got so annoying and repetitive I literally just gave up and stopped playing the game. The game just has no variety whatsoever. Oh, and those weird-looking island residents... I couldn't stand those characters either, and they wore out their welcome just as quickly as the annoying tropical music and bright island colors. Overall, Sunshine was just not a very good game in my opinion, and as a Mario game, it was even less impressive.

If I could sum up the game in four words, it would be bland, boring, annoying and repetitive.

But... the game did have one redeeming value: Its platforming mini-games. Honestly, I would probably play a game consisting of just those bonus levels before I would want to try to play Mario Sunshine as a whole again. While in my opinion being the highlights of the game, even those bonus stages couldn't save this one.

Re: Video: What Was Your First Video Game Ever?

UltraZelda64

I grew up on the Atari 7800. I have absolutely no idea what my very first game was--but I can tell you which ones were likely among the first, and which ones were the most influential to me. Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man. The original Mario Bros. Galaga, Galaxian. Pole Position & Pole Position II.

Eventually I was hooked by the Super NES. with Super Mario All*Stars, Super Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country, etc., being some of my favorites. I never had an NES. I also didn't have a Sega Genesis for long, but I absolutely loved what I got from the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

I remember playing countless hours of a really ***** game called Jinks, and another game called "Choplifter!"

Re: Sega "Working On Fixing A Variety Of Issues" In Sonic Origins

UltraZelda64

@thinkhector I am in total disagreement and I personally believe that your reasoning is totally bonkers, but I'll just leave it at that.

The speed and flow is actively hampered for me every single time I want to load a game, because in the originals, I virtually never want to continue anything. I almost always want to start fresh with a new game, but this collection forces me to jump through hoops after literally telling it "new game" to confirm that "yes, I want a NEW GAME" before I can even jump in. Again, a no-save mode or manual save/turn off autosave combined with a manual game save deletion option would resolve ALL of this by making all of the games work effectively the way they did decades ago.

Re: Sega "Working On Fixing A Variety Of Issues" In Sonic Origins

UltraZelda64

@thinkhector Also, I have to add: If Sonic Origins' save setup were so great, then why would not only Sonic Mania, but also even Headcannon with the Sonic 3 & Knuckles in Sonic Origins decide to use the original Sonic 3/S&K/S3&K save method? And even then, why would the original tried-and-true Christian Whitehead releases of the original Sonic games (Sonic 1 & Sonic 2) on Android also use basically the same exact save method? Hint: Because it works... and it works well.

Re: Sega "Working On Fixing A Variety Of Issues" In Sonic Origins

UltraZelda64

@thinkhector That's the thing though. I like to manage my own saves. I know what I am doing. Origins autosaves as soon as you get in a level--Sonic 3 allows you to start a game with no save if you want. And just because I started a game of Sonic 2 with Knuckles, it remembers that and wants to put me back in Emerald Hill Zone or wherever I last made it to, whenever I want to get back into Sonic 2 as Knuckles, even if I don't want anything to do with the old save data. Say no, new game, then the second you get dropped into Emerald Hill Zone again it's already saved another new unwanted file, and the cycle repeats... and repeats. It is beyond annoying. How about NO NEW SAVE FILES unless I simply ask for them? Sounds simple but it would really go a long way.

S3&K gives me a bunch of save files, which I can organize and delete as I see fit, and doesn't limit me to one save file per character, unlike the rest of Origins. I am free to save, or not. I personally prefer in most games not to save--after all, the original classics had no save systems, and personally I'd rather it not save unless I specifically ask for it to.

Re: Sega "Working On Fixing A Variety Of Issues" In Sonic Origins

UltraZelda64

I really want to like it... and I do... but I'd be lying if I said the compilation doesn't have absolutely tons and tons of issues. Most of the issues I have with it are not necessarily bugs (although the Tails bug in Sonic 2 is absolutely ridiculous), instead most of them have more to do with the interface and presentation in general, as well as seemingly poor design decisions and a total lack of polish and integration into the collection as a whole.

For example, the graphics are already less sharp than I would prefer, but to make things worse, I can't apply that nice, sharp CRT filter like what Sonic Mania has. Instead, the only option is to make it even more blurry, and honestly just horrible looking! And yeah, those borders for 4:3/Classic mode might be nice, but it sure would be nice to change the border in-game, and better yet, set a different border to be used for each game! And yes, the widescreen Anniversary modes look great--how about an option to start the games in 16:9 with the "lives/continue" system though? And in Sonic 1 Classic mode, why is the spin dash enabled by default? I sure don't remember that feature. Sure, seems like a simple oversight, but it's all the little things (and holy crap this game has a lot of them) that add up and tarnish any polish this collection should have. Personally, I think that if they can't even get the "classic" versions right, then they should have just stuck the ROMs on there and run them with a good quality emulator. But of course they can't do that with S3&K--because the original retail ROM has music by Michael Jackson.

Also, the games' save system--except S3&K's--just sucks. They removed the save systems from the original Christian Whitehead releases and replaced them with what I'm sure they intended to be a "unified" save system across games. Only problem: It sucks, it only allows one save per character, and good luck remembering where you were in Sonic 2 with Sonic and Tails or just Sonic alone, and never mind the tons of other possible character/game combinations. And why are my only options when starting a game to continue or start new, then when it sees old data it asks if I'm really sure I want to start a new game instead of continuing with the currently-saved data for that character?

But wait, there's more! I never even intended to save that data in the first place anyway, so why does it have to bug me every time I want to start a new game when the game autosaves and it decided to save the second it dropped me into Green Hill Zone? Why can't I delete that data myself, turn off autosave and save manually if I really, truly want to? The save system is just terrible--at least S3&K still has its original (and far superior) save system.

And how about the menu system layout? I could raise plenty of complaints but I'll just leave it at these few things: First, Why are the options under Museum, of all places? Second, why the hell can't I access at least some options--global and per-game--within the games themselves? This would especially make sense for certain global settings and settings for the current game. And Sonic CD still has its old settings in-game. In theory Sonic CD's options being accessible is not a bad thing, but they did absolutely NOTHING to make them fit into the collection. In fact, the way they changed the title screen while keeping the menus themselves in that game makes it stick out like a sore thumb. Not pleasant, and just reeks of laziness, not just artistically, but in terms of coding and integration.

OMG, this compilation just has so many things wrong with its presentation--and it's sad too, because I really see so much positive about it. I would love to see Sega fix all these issues and the tons more that there are. There are tons of reviews on YouTube featuring constructive criticism as well, and in many cases, the reviewers make very good points.

Come on Sega, get to work! Make this already pretty-good compilation the amazing, truly-definitive way to enjoy these games! Now that you took away newer players' ability to purchase certain digital versions of these games, it's up to you to make these versions at least as good as the originals, if not even better.

Honestly I am most impressed with S3&K--you can really tell here that Stealth's work has gone relatively untouched (in other words Sega hasn't gone and really screwed S3&K up when integrating Stealth's work into the compilation like they did the others). It's just unfortunate that they had to go and have Jun screw up some of the prototype and other music so badly. Christian Whitehead's original releases were great; yeah, they're aging now, but it's unfortunate to see Sega make changes that make them worse instead of better, and put so little effort into making them feel like a truly cohesive part of this package.

Re: Sega Shares An Extensive Overview Trailer For Sonic Origins

UltraZelda64

@relinqued From its very first announcement, I was going to get this game. I feel like the whole scheme is crap, but that is not going to stop me from spending $45 and just getting the game in its entirety. If there was only one SKU for $60 you'd be complaining about that. Personally, I'm just anxious to play Christian Whitehead's versions of the games on a console after probably over a decade, and to see Sonic 3 & Knuckles for the first time in forever in an official compilation--and as a Christian Whitehead remake at that.

I've done my fair share of bitching about things like features, presentation, and yes, even the Microsoft Office-like SKU system, but that's all old news. At less than a week from unlocking on my consoles, I am anxious to actually play the games. Their icons are teasing on my Xbox and Switch home screens.

Re: Bethesda's Future Games Will Be "Where Game Pass Exists"

UltraZelda64

I have Game Pass Ultimate, but I tend to buy all the games I like eventually anyway so I am not a fan of this. Sure, this could at least be somewhat alleviated on the Switch and PlayStation if both Nintendo and Sony would agree to allow Microsoft to release a Game Pass app on their consoles (which IMO overall would be a good thing, but WTF are the chances of THAT happening any time soon?), but how would it be provided? Natively, cool--if the hardware supports it. Cloud-based? Boo--keep that s*** off my console.

Re: Jun Senoue To Adapt Some Of Sonic 3's Music For Sonic Origins

UltraZelda64

What I don't get is if the Ice Cap Zone song is basically a song by some eighties band called the Jetzons which Brad Buxer was a part of, why is it lumped into the group of songs tainted by Michael Jackson's influence which apparently his greedy heirs won't allow Sega to re-use in the game? If Brad also worked on the soundtrack, and that's his band's song, then why can't he at least allow Ice Cap's original release song? Obviously Carnival Night is a different story but I don't see why Ice Cap gets lumped in with all the Michael Jackson drama.

Re: Jun Senoue To Adapt Some Of Sonic 3's Music For Sonic Origins

UltraZelda64

Add another tick to the disappointment box for this game. I give up, Sega. :/

To be fair though, it does seem that Sega is at least trying to deal with the problem in the best way possible--short of getting the copyright owners to agree to allow the use of their work for a royalty. So as big a disappointment this collection is turning out to be, all hope is not completely lost... at least not yet.

I just hope there'll be no more disappointments between now and its imminent release.

Re: Video: Here's 45 Minutes Of Sonic Origins Gameplay Footage

UltraZelda64

@Devann I disagree. I was a Sonic fan since when I was a kid in the nineties, and this is just what I want. Only, being a fan for so long I have such high expectations, but it appears that many of them will not be met. To give them credit, they have the right idea... but with Sega being Sega, they did what they do best and f***ed up the overall end result in my opinion in several ways. To list a few:

Original versions (quality emulations of original ROMS, or possibly improved versions of the originals like the Sega Ages releases of Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 on Switch) plus Christian Whitehead versions? Nope, just Taxman's versions, either in widescreen or cropped 4:3. No originals, or originals with improvements here, for completeness. Just the remakes with different aspect ratios, and game rules/lives systems, which literally seem to be tied to each other.

Choice between the classic gameplay rules and game over/lives system vs. the "new" infinite lives mode? Nope, unless you consider being forced to run Christian Whitehead's versions with a cropped screen aspect a choice. There seems to be no widescreen mode with the original game over/lives system intact. Very sad.

The choice to play Sonic 3 and Knuckles as a whole, or to play the original Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic and Knuckles on their own, independently of each other? Nope, based on what I've seen and heard it seems like all you get here is a widescreen reproduction of both games locked on into one.

The main thing I am hoping for now, given all these disappointments for a collection that I had such high hopes and was very excited for since its original announcement is for all of the games' original Genesis music to be left intact. Sega, you're bragging about the museum/soundtrack "feature" of this game in your convoluted "sku comparison"... hell, you're even selling it as DLC or as part of a "deluxe" edition that costs $5 more. Don't let us down with inferior, non-original garbage music.

Re: Nintendo Admits It Released A New Model Of The Switch To Fight Piracy

UltraZelda64

Cool! Although I buy and play all my Switch games legitimately and own hundreds of games for the console on the eShop, plus have a subscription to the Nintendo Switch Online (w/ Expansion Pack) service and am therefore entiled to play all the classic libraries of games, this news makes me happy to be the owner of two original-model Nintendo Switch consoles. No fancier screen, no better batteries--but no extra DRM or anti-consumer "protections" either.

Re: SEGA Announces The Mega Drive Mini 2, Boasting 50 Genesis And Mega CD Games

UltraZelda64

I personally don't know what to think of this, and I'll hold off until more is known, including more of the included games.

I already have the original Genesis Mini... would this be worth it? How much overlap in games will there be between the two models? Will I need two Genesis Minis just to get the whole experience (Mini 1 for Sonic 1&2; Mini 2 for Sonic 3, Knuckles, 3&K), or will this one feature a more complete library making the original more obsolete and overall better? Or will the new system just focus more on providing games that really weren't a part of the original model, making it more of a potential worthwhile buy even for owners of the original console, assuming its full and final list of games is worth it?

I don't know what to think about this just yet. We need more details. So far it looks like they are going the route of having this one stand out on its own with unique games not on the original model, but honestly, I wish they would just put everything on the first model on here too, but expand the list with more, unique titles. Why should I need one Genesis and set of controllers connected to my TV for Sonic 1&2 and a bunch of spin-offs and another Genesis for Sonic CD and probably others, for example? HDMI ports and physical space aren't exactly unlimited, and convenience sharply declines as those two resources become exhausted.

Edit: And I know Sonic 3 & Knuckles are not mentioned, but I used them as an example due to the possiblity as Sonic Origins draws near, and the fact that they can be seen as multiple separate entries on top of several games in the series already on the current model. Of course, Sonic CD is already known as one of available games.

Re: SEGA Announces The Mega Drive Mini 2, Boasting 50 Genesis And Mega CD Games

UltraZelda64

@Fizza Sonic Adventure (okay, fair--DX version), Sonic Adventure 2 and Shenmue 1&2 are easily all playable on modern hardware in the form of Xbox and PC (Steam). And maybe even PS4 (with Sonic possibly online-only with their cloud streaming service though).

I do agree that the Dreamcast would be a better machine overall to miniaturize at this point and it does have a lot of games that either haven't been ported elsewhere to this day or have been ported to now old hardware that itself is showing its age in convience connecting to modern TVs and obtaining in the first place, but there's a fair amount of stuff including the games you mentioned that are luckily not tied back with old hardware.

Re: Sonic Origins' Story Mode Snubs Tails & Knuckles

UltraZelda64

Does anyone know why Sonic Origins is still not available for preorder on Switch? It's been everywhere else since its original big reveal, I've had my Xbox preorder since April 20, and despite claims that it is coming to "all platforms" (including Switch) on June 23, it still does not appear to have a page on Nintendo's site. It's getting closer and closer to release month, what's going on here? Any other game, I would've had my Switch digital download preordered by now.

Re: Sonic Origins' Story Mode Snubs Tails & Knuckles

UltraZelda64

Just it being there is pretty cool, I'm okay with Story Mode being exclusively Sonic. I'm more concerned about whether you'll be able to play as Sonic 3 & S&K separately, and whether it has the original music. Hopefully yes and yes.

I'm more irritated by the fact that Knuckles is not playable in Sonic CD--this just confirms that literally the only thing "new" in this collection is Christian Whitehead's Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Which is disappointing; going into the games' code and actually adding some cool stuff would have been nice for this long-awaited console release of decade-old cell phone ports of decades-older Genesis games.

I'm just hoping it's good.

Re: Sonic Mania Dev Clarifies Involvement With Sonic Origins, Says It's "Purely A Sega-Developed Product"

UltraZelda64

@SmashFan347 Not really. Once it's delisted, you'll no longer be able to buy it on the Steam store, but if you already own a copy of the game on Steam no one is revoking your right or ability to download, play and access your copy of the game. By delisting it, they are only removing its page from the Steam store itself--they aren't touching your library. So as long as you already own a copy, nothing really changes.

Re: Yuji Naka Was Removed As Balan Wonderworld Director, Filed Lawsuit Against Square Enix

UltraZelda64

@Specter_of-the_OLED You know, when you have negotiations with a company and at the same time are involved in an ongoing case in court with that company, you can't always just say what you want. When it's all over, though, you can pretty much just trash that company as much as you want. He has made this pretty clear if you would read and actually comprehend what he said.

Re: Switch Versions Of Sonic 1 And 2 Are Safe As SEGA Plans To Delist Classic Games

UltraZelda64

@Nintendofanatic94 Wow... just wow. I don't know if I should laugh or just be stunned by what I am reading here.

Did you know that Sonic Origins is, in fact, going to have DLC? In fact, I have my Xbox on right now, with information of my pre-ordered and installed copy of Sonic Origins showing on my TV now. Currently installed is the base game, Sonic Origins version 1.0.0.3, using 314.8 MB of my system's storage. Under that is a list of add-ons, or DLC, that I also get with my pre-ordered Digital Deluxe copy of the game: the Premium Fun Pack, 25.1 MB; the Start Dash Pack, 10.1 MB; and the Classic Music Pack, 241.8 MB. Are you sure Sonic Origins won't have DLC? Because all the articles I've been reading and even my own Xbox are lying to me about my own copy of the game if that's the case.

Also--you seriously think physical products are more profitable and would somehow make Sega more money than digital copies made by computers and transferred over computer networks? You are dead wrong if you are serious. Even Sega would agree--and for proof of that you need to look no further than Sonic Mania. There is a reason they originally released it as digital-only, and once they realized that it sold well, they decided to make a physical release of the game.

Re: Switch Versions Of Sonic 1 And 2 Are Safe As SEGA Plans To Delist Classic Games

UltraZelda64

@Nintendofanatic94 I'm sorry, but I'm going to believe the official public word from Sega themselves over what someone "heard" at their local "trustworthy" store based on what a store employee supposedly heard from "someone" at Sega. If there will be a physical release it will certainly not be released at launch, as Sega has pretty much confirmed. If that does change, and it could, cool--but as of now the official word is that a physical copy is not planned for the game's official release date.

Given the fact that Sonic Mania--developed by the same team--was initially released digital-only and did not have a physical release until the release of its Encore DLC, it is not surprising that they may be planning something similar for Sonic Origins.

Re: Switch Versions Of Sonic 1 And 2 Are Safe As SEGA Plans To Delist Classic Games

UltraZelda64

@carlos82 The good thing is that you get the ROMs with it, and you can easily go into the game's directory, find them, copy them somewhere else, and then load them up in a different (and better) emulator. All legally too--because you actually bought (and therefore own) the ROMs.

I think the emulation has been improved since its early days, I don't remember any filters being available when I first bought it, before it got a graphical/UI overhaul.

Re: Switch Versions Of Sonic 1 And 2 Are Safe As SEGA Plans To Delist Classic Games

UltraZelda64

@YoshiPilot I honestly don't think they are talking about that collection at all. Although it originally came out well before the console versions and originally had a very basic interface, it's been updated to match the consoles in terms of interface and it still, therefore, is technically a "modern" release. It just happened to be released before all hell broke loose with Sonic 3 & Knuckles, so the game was released with it as DLC. I doubt they're even talking about the 3DS releases.

I really think they're referring to the Sega Vintage Collection releases and the original Christian Whitehead version of Sonic CD released way back on now-unsupported consoles. It's already difficult to even buy them on Xbox; they can't be purchased on a current Xbox console or even from the main Xbox website/Microsoft Store. You have to either buy the games directly from an Xbox 360 to add them to your account, or by finding each game's page on the old Xbox Marketplace (which is buggy as hell on modern browsers) and try buying them there (but good luck! OMFG the bugs...). But if you buy them they are backwards compatible on current Xbox consoles.

As for the PS3 versions, I don't know if they can still be obtained or not.

Re: Switch Versions Of Sonic 1 And 2 Are Safe As SEGA Plans To Delist Classic Games

UltraZelda64

I bet they're talking about the old Sega Vintage Collection versions of Sonic 1-3 and Sonic & Knuckles, and the original standalone release of Christian Whitehead's version of Sonic CD, all released many years ago on Xbox (I think 360). And honestly, those Digital Eclipse releases of the games are... not very good. :/ They're crap... no good filters, including scanlines. The image is, by default, in the center of the screen, with no way to properly expand it to fill the screen while preserving the games' original aspect ratio. Even on Xbox, the Sega Genesis Classics Collection offers a far better way to play Sonic 1&2. And Sonic CD on Xbox is the Christian Whitehead version, so Origins will just replace it with a newer version of itself when it comes out.

The Switch does not even have these versions of the games to delist, so I'm not sure why this article is even on a Nintendo news site--the article itself admits that its only relevance to Switch players is to spark a discussion on game preservation. So I guess there's that.

More on the direct subject of Sonic on Switch, in my opinion the system has the best versions of Sonic 1&2 based on the original ROMs that you can buy on a console in the Sega Ages collection, and as the article says, that's not going anywhere. It also has Sonic 1&2 as part of the Sega Genesis Classics Collection. And of course there's also a competent emulation of Sonic 2 as a part of the NSO service--which as the article says is going nowhere, although being part of a service, I don't see it outliving the other releases.

Long story short: If you're on a console other than Switch, buy those old releases before they get taken down if you really want them. If you want the ROMs of all three original Sonic games, get the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive Classics collection on Steam and whatever games you want in the form of DLC--it is the only modern collection to have Sonic 3/Knuckles, and the ROMs can even be taken and used in another emulator or even on a Raspberry Pi if you want.

Re: Gallery: Brand New Screenshots Of Sonic Origins, Out On Switch This June

UltraZelda64

@samuelvictor Yeah, I really, truly hope that this--such a seemingly simple thing--is just an undisclosed feature somewhere in the menus. No matter what, I'm getting it day one--already preordered the deluxe edition. Still can't wait.

I've been a Sonic fan for pretty much all of my life. I just want to see these games represented in the purest way possible, even if it is an off-by-default option that you have to specifically enable. Crash 4: It's About Time did it right in my opinion; they featured both a "modern" mode with unlimited lives and a "classic" mode with the traditional game over system... and they didn't really even have to, because it was a brand-new game. Sega, copy them!

Re: Gallery: Brand New Screenshots Of Sonic Origins, Out On Switch This June

UltraZelda64

I want to be able to play the "Anniversary" versions of the games with all their improvements yet have all of the original rules otherwise fully intact, with the traditional lives and game overs. Is that really so much to ask for; just an option to switch the game rules back to classic style while playing the more modernized Christian Whitehead versions that have been out for years now on phones and even the Amazon Fire TV? What is with this "coins" and "unlimited lives" bull****?

So far, still, I have yet to see any indication that this is possible. Do we really have to play in the 4:3 mode that I already have a gazillion times over (except S3&K, which I only have in the old Sonic Mega Collection form on GameCube and PS2 and on PC with the Sega Genesis collection... and now think of it, on Xbox Live Arcade too), just to play with the original rules? If so, WTF is the point of this collection if I can play most of these games on any of my consoles (or all on PC) in the same exact form... or even the Christian Whitehead versions of these games on my Fire TV Stick with all the modern features, while still respecting the classic game rules regarding the life/game over system?

Why dumb these games down? Are people these days really that afraid of actually having to be faced with a challenge? Truly pathetic if so, and sad that we can't just get the best of both worlds, after waiting so many years for these modernized versions of the games to finally be released on a real, proper gaming platforms.

Back then I used to play Nintendo or SEGA--depending on who made the console I was going to play (and in many cases, the game(s) I was going to play on it). These days I often play Switch, Xbox or PlayStation/PS4. Although honestly, I sometimes still say something like "I'm gonna go play some Nintendo" when referring to playing games on Nintendo consoles (most often specifically when intending games by Nintendo themselves). Sometimes I'll say something more specific, like "I'm gonna play some [Mario/Zelda/Metroid/Forza/Pac-Man/etc.].

Either way, it's generally very well understood what I'm talking about, because I often just had a conversation about the game in question--and many people I know that I talk to aren't clueless about video games anymore, like a lot were back in the 90s.

@ChromaticDracula It wouldn't even need that. Hell, you wouldn't even need electricity to operate it--how much more "green" could modern 3D tracking/light gun gaming get?!? Try it yourself... set two candles down, spaced about a foot or so apart around the middle of your TV, light them up and and fire up your Wii with... I dunno... say, The House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return. All the Wiimote is looking for is two IR lights.

There's no reason why something similar can't be done today with Switch... other than the fact that Nintendo seems to prefer the inferior (in many ways) gyroscope, probably because it's cheaper for them and more convenient to the average consumer to use (no need to set up a separate wired light bar). I never did care much for Switch's motion controls... they're a joke, the gyroscope needs constant babysitting and that takes all the fun out of the games you're using motion control with.

I find it amusing that just because there are about a half-dozen or so either true retro racing games or modern games using their design ideas, that the reviewer calls the aesthetic "fairly overused." Really? Just a half-dozen retro racers is on the verge of "too many" is how I interpret that.

Yeah, because we need every single racing game to mimic real life scenery and objects in three dimensions withrealistic lighting and shading, just like Gran Turismo and Forza, to the point of being nearly photorealistic, and even a half-dozen games not conforming to the current "standard" is getting to be a bit too much.

Either way, I own all of those mentioned games (at least the ones currently available), I will be picking up this one when I get paid tomorrow, and I will happily buy any good racing game with an 80s-style look and feel. The more the better, the style doesn't get old. Maybe I'm just old enough to actually appreciate the style.
