Original article [Fri 5th Aug, 2022 06:05 BST]: Sega is currently in the process of rolling out a new update for Sonic Origins across all platforms including the Nintendo Switch. Currently, we only have access to the PlayStation patch notes, but the update is likely the same for all versions.
Tails' Channel has shared a breakdown of what to expect - noting how Tails will no longer go off-screen, soundtrack and music speed adjustments along with additional bug fixes. Here are the details:
If Sega mentions this latest update, we'll be sure to let you know. And if you haven't already played Sonic Origins, be sure to check out our Nintendo Life review. We awarded this compilation featuring four Sonic games 8/10 stars.

Infinite continues yay! 😁
Headcannon said something about not being able to submit their final patches to Sega before the release right? I have a feeling that a lot of these bonus codes were intended to be there all along as fun extras, but are now forced to be in a post-launch update instead.
I'm glad some of the bugs are being fixed - the mislabeled museum names was especially sloppy - but yeah, there's a lot more problems with the game that I hope get sorted too.
I'll be happy as long as they fix the glitches
Edit: well they did thanks sega
I really wish they would make many of these codes into options like Mania had. I know theyre supposed to be easter eggs to certain dates etc like Sonic 2 had but the compromise could have been for these to unlock options in a menu or something.
Still waiting for the price to go down to a reasonable amount. I won't pay more than 20 for it.
What a shame that issues like these exist.
Well, when they fixed everything, maybe a physical version comes out. Than I'm in.
@Nintendo4Sonic Hopefully, as I am also waiting on the physical to go with all my other many versions of Sonic 1
Despite its shortcomings, I really enjoyed playing through Origins. Just finished all four games, including Sonic CD for the first time.
@dustinprewitt It's already $32 at the moment so you probably won't need to wait too long. Sega games tend to sink in price quickly.
0000000 is gonna be tough. I'm going to challenge myself with it, tho. Oh yeah: And I'll intentionally die twice
Unbelievable really that they released it in such a state. A couple more months of bug fixing would’ve made a huge difference.
Removed - trolling/baiting
@PrinceRetro I’m not a Sonic fan, I didn’t buy the game……not sure how you jumped to that conclusion?
This has just been an embarrassing effort from Sega.
@DarkScythe13 Yeah, the upcoming Cowabunga Collection took codes and just added them as menu options.
Not a huge deal, but the first link to the review right under the tweet is a broken link.
As for Sonic Origins, I will get to it at some point. Maybe by the time I do it will be in a much better state than it was at launch. I probably would have played this already if it was in better shape at launch as I loved Sonic games on the Genesis.
@Nintendo4Sonic The issues are WAY over blown. I've played thru the entire game and it's fine. The biggest issue was Tails disappearing off screen and not returning right away. (Guess what? This happens in Mania sometimes!) S&K 3 also had a some extra bugs that would you die in some weird ways. But those are minor bugs. Tails is the only major bug.
@thinkhector I think people were mostly angry at the DLC and price and then when it had bugs too people lost their s***
@Scapetti Yeah, Sega is in love with their Digital Deluxe packages of games. I think this strategy hurts them because it changes their chart placement on the eShop. Each version of the game, the Digital Deluxe version and the regular version, are tracker seperately. If there was only one product, or SKU, Sonic Origins would have probably been charted at #1 at release.
@PrinceRetro A properly finished, completed game to begin with, that doesn't need countless post-release updates just to bring up to decent retail standards? This update fixes what I would say are three of the biggest bugs with the game, but there are countless others. And that is only the bugs! There are numerous problems with this compilation's menus/overall presentation and save system, and who knows if any of that will ever be fixed. At this point I'm honestly not betting on it.
Still, these are some very welcome, much-needed fixes--but I hope Sega doesn't just stop at the bare minimum. They need to give this compilation the polish and attention to detail it deserves, which they should have done from the very beginning. These fixes shouldn't have even been needed to begin with, but here you go--Sega's lack of quality control standards continues here up into 2022.
Some things never seem to change, no matter how many decades the hardcore fans beg Sega for better treatment of their favorite franchises.
Disgraceful that such old games were released in such a state in the first place 👎
@PrinceRetro You joined just to say that? how sad.
@UltraZelda64 Agreed but sadly I don't think Sega will ever learn. The weird thing is they DO still make or publish some great games but whatever it is about their own mascot they just can't seem to get it right.
@PrinceRetro I don't think it is too much for fans to ask that a 2022 collection of games originally released between 1991 and 1994, to perform at the very least as good as they did back then, if not perform better now. Especially considering how 3 of the games were remade a decade ago, with less issues than they have in the Origins release. Releasing the product as is creates a first impression that can never be taken back, and as a result, regardless of if Sega manages to patch this to the best Sonic Collection ever, the damage is already done. Yes, the game will continue to sell, Sonic is an evergreen franchise and regardless of review scores, the games sell millions. To the online gaming masses though? Sonic Origins will never shake that first impression with most gamers, when it could have been a repeat of Mania with almost nothing but praise for the Blue Blur.
@PrinceRetro
To launch in a polished state?
Is that too much to ask for these days?
All of these codes eem to be references. I shal look up...
Super Peel-Out in S3&K! That means at least one Sonic game in this collection has Max Control Sonic!
@MarkyVigoroth
19790811 is Stealth's birthday.
His Sonic Retro community avatar is a Squirrel character, like Ricky. That's why the cheat code turns all rescued animals into Ricky.
Tested it out. So far I noticed that the rubble in Marble Garden stopped this time at least. On the other hand Tails still doesn’t react to the yellow spring spheres in the Blue Sphere special stages. Its a step in the right direction but more polish is needed.
Still some of the wierd physics issues also, like the start of Sonic’s Mushroom Hill Act 1, when jumping on the yellow spring, flipping in the pole and trying to land on the platform with the two ring monitors you still cant make the difference. Yet when i went there as Knuckles if be okay.
About time they relabeled all the songs that had to unfortunately be misnamed because of SEGA's stupidness
@PrinceRetro People want them to not release broken games. Imagine that!
@MarkyVigoroth Maybe 47891 is just a random number, which is appropriate for a code that randomizes the monitor items
I'll buy it on sale for 14 bucks or less, but I already own too many other better versions of these games to really care about Origins in general
@dustinprewitt
The price is absurdly high for what you're getting.
Can you just confirm a physical version already, SEGA? If not, just confirm there won't be one. Goddammit!
Sega is looking to be the next Rockstar, they rush old games to be release for the anniversary in a broken mess and then slowly fix em later. Just continue to wait and eventually the games will be worth it.
I thankfully had a pretty much bug free time when I played it. These games still hold up really well! Glad to see the Tails glitch in particular being fixed. That was the only bug I ran into.
I was hoping they would remove roll jump locking in Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, but you can remove it yourself by turning on Sonic 3 items in the level select.
this game is so wack, wouldnt play it even for free
Fixed a bug in Sonic 3 and knuckles where themes created by Michael Jackson would be replaced by God awful abominations. 😉
All joking aside i honestly never noticed or experienced any of these bugs that were apparently present in the game.
No sale from me without the MJ music, simple as that.
You know, after having read the complete patch list... now THAT is an update! They have squashed several (though not all) of the worst bugs, and countless ones I would have probably never known about. Honestly... that is quite impressive. At least about five of the bugs were so bad they should've never been in a retail product to begin with--but on top of those it looks like Sega really has been busy.
I still hope to see continued bug fixes, and if the next patch is as big as this one I think I'll be happy!
Still though, I would like to see them go beyond just bug fixes. Please Sega, don't stop there! I would like to see improvements to the save systems of all the games except Sonic 3&K; the ability to disable autosave, manually save the current game, and manage/delete save files. And when continuing, allow us to pick which save file/character to load!
Plus better menu integration and make certain system-wide settings per-game settings instead. For example, let me pause the game I'm currently playing when in classic mode and select the border for that game. Why can't I have a Sonic border for Sonic 1, a Metal Sonic or Amy border for Sonic CD, and a Tails border for Sonic 2? Why can't I select in-game, and have it remember per game? Come on Sega! Seriously, they could really have something truly great here if they just go all the way.
I really wish you could loop all the songs that would normally loop in the sound test... I could listen to Final Zone, Boss [S1], Emerald Hill, Aquatic Ruin, Casino Night, Mystic Cave [S2], and others for like 5-10 minutes each...
It is good to see that Sega is patching this game and I am sure it is good enough for me to purchase it already, but thankfully I have a lot of other good games to play, so this can wait.
@Jhena With many of the absolute biggest, most annoying bugs now eliminated, the game really is getting there. If only it shipped in a state more like this right from the beginning. It still needs work--a lot of it--but at least certain major bugs that would make you not want to continue playing it are now fixed.
Now to be fair, that is something we should never have to celebrate--but here we are, 2022. Sega, no real difference from a decade or two ago.
Now I just have to wait for the PC version to have the original sound modded in and then I will dowload it "legally".
@Jhena Sega isn't doing a damn thing it's whatever company they hired to make the thing.
@Jokerwolf
Do you mean the patch or the game? As far as I know this game was developed internally at Sega. Wikipedia says it is the Sonic Team. I think Headcannon was also partly involved.
But I do not know whether they also make the patches.
That Tails getting stuck off screen and the sound not stopping drove me crazy. I'm glad they fixed it but dont know how it was missed it happened to me all the time. Great port though overall though i think
I forgot this game has no physical edition, at least for now. Well I can wait.
Great, now replace the poor quality prototype soundtracks with the higher quality ones
@Jhena You could be right and if it was them it is shameful.
no matter how many updates Sega comes up with, it will NEVER fix Sonic..
No physical, no buy. So tired of these companies trying to sucker the consumer into double dipping by going digital only for the first 3-6 months.
I like how they said the mislabled songs in the museum was a "glitch". Nice Sega
@Truegamer79 Not even the Tails off-screen non-stop jumping bug? I honestly don't think it was possible to play Sonic 2 without running into that one... it happened to me early on in just about any level. Literally any level where you could at some point gain enough speed to leave Tails behind.
Soooo many bug fixes. Disgraceful..
@UltraZelda64
I'm not entirely sure. I honestly don't remember it happening. My only real complaint is the butchered sonic 3 music but technically that's not a bug. Sure bugs the hell outta me though. Good thing i still have all the other releases of sonic 3 so i can play it like i remember.
@Truegamer79 Wow, consider yourself seriously lucky--it was so annoying, it could have you wanting to wring that poor fox's neck (and that's not cool). Maybe you played with the volume down to where you wouldn't hear Tails' constant jumping, or you played mostly the other games where it wasn't an issue (only Sonic 2)? Either way, be thankful that you didn't have to hear it! I actually stopped playing entirely while waiting for a patch, and I know other people played only as Sonic to eliminate the possibility of the bug occurring. Personally, I gotta have Tails--it's Tails or nothing, so I decided to stop playing altogether until they fixed it.
My only gripe is that you still can't play as Sonic & Tails in Sonic the Hedgehog 1.
You have to go to the Level Select to do so, even when Sonic & Tails mode is unlocked after beating the game once in the 2013 mobile version.
Knuckles & Tails in Sonic 2 and Tails in Sonic CD are similar New Game+ unlockables which are available from the start in Origins with no Level Select tricks required so they have no excuse.
@AmplifyMJ Look, I love Michael and his teams music (and of course Michael's actual music), but if they didn't do what they did, we'd probably never see this game re-released again. Too many licenses in the soundtrack.
@Jamie64326 I’m not a huge Sonic fan, outside of Adventure. The inclusion of the Jackson tracks would have guaranteed a sale from me, it’s not a protest or anything just a selling point to me lol 😊
@AmplifyMJ Fair enough. Just to let you know, the licenses behind the soundtrack now are several. You've got some that are now tied to Sony as they own Michael's music, you've got Fervor Records who owns the catalogue to a new wave group called The Jetzons, they did a track called Hard Times that went unreleased until 2008/2009 when Fervor Records enquired The Jetzons music and on top of that. The Jetzons had a member called Brad Buxer who later worked with Michael and Sonic 3 and used Hard Times for IceCap Zone. On top of all that, there's the other contributing members of Michael's team, so this is why they did what they did.
@dustinprewitt If you have a console that can play it, you could buy a used copy of "Sonic Mega Collection (Plus)" from a number of sources for around that price.
You wouldn't get the extras like Mission Mode, the Drop Dash, the Spin Dash in Sonic 1, or Hidden Palace Zone in Sonic 2, but you would get a few extra games and the original Sonic 3 soundtrack.
If you still want "Sonic CD," there's also "Sonic Gems Collection," which also includes "Sonic the Fighters," "Sonic R," and a number of Game Gear games.
@Orokosaki @Nua Yeah, but it would've cost them even more in PR damage than these bugs did had they delayed the game past Sonic's birthday. At a time when patches can be easily made available, they made the right call.
@Bizzyb Is that an issue with this particular game when its very existence is trying to convince most customers to double dip?
@BulbasaurusRex between the sonic collection on cube, sega collection on ps3 and ps4, and sega online, I've already got just about all the sonic games. The primary reason I'd buy this collection is the fact I don't have a CRT TV anymore to play the GCN sega collection, sonic 3 & knuckles not being available on the ps3 collection, and the rewind/save state feature. And that's also why 40 bucks is way too expensive for me on this.
@dustinprewitt You don't need a CRT to play a GameCube or Wii as long as the modern TV still has the appropriate component connections. (If you foolishly bought one that dropped those connections and don't have another one that does have them, that's your own fault.) Yeah, you could suffer from some input lag, but most modern TVs have a game mode that will minimize it.
Yes I know that, no my television doesn't have component, no I'm not going to shell out cash for an adapter, and no one likes unsolicited advice from a smart ass.
