Re: Review: The Banner Saga (Switch eShop)

@Contes

Yeh I have found with a few games there is just too much interface for the screen. Text suffers etc.

That’s the advantage of having controllers, you don’t have to experience the heat from the console itself. Although I can imagine the iPad Pro will run games at a lower temp being they are very powerful.

I love the X-COM series. Played XCOM:Enemy Within and XCOM 2 on my PC and have been itching to play them on a handheld. So I am really looking forward to XCOM 2 in May on the Switch.

Hi @Contes, I haven’t actually bought it on the switch yet, although I was very close yesterday seeing them all in the sale. I did however find that the ipad is great for this type of game.

But it seems you can only get the first two on iOS as opposed to all three on the Switch at this point in time. Had they been available on the Switch when I originally purchased them, I would’ve probably bought them on the switch knowing I could play them all on one console. And having only completed the first and a portion of the second, I think I may have to now do that!

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The Nintendo Direct Mini?

Turrican280

I am so excited for XCOM 2. Have it on the PC and it really is a superb game. Will definitely be getting on the switch, always thought it would be it’s best home.

Considering I knew nothing about this Direct I was pleasantly surprised. And Episode 1 Racer is the cherry on top!

Re: Soapbox: I'm Causing The Slow Death Of Gaming Magazines, And It Hurts

Turrican280

I still remember seeing ONM issue 54, with Mario holding an N64 and the headline “Nintendo 64 is here!” at my local newsagent. My parents bought it for me thankfully. I never had my own console before, I’d played on both my brother’s Amstrads, Amiga’s and SNES growing up. The amazing artwork and pictures of Mario 64, Star Wars Shadows of the Empire and Goldeneye had me tranfixed. The rest was history.

I have a lot of fond memories and nostalgia for old magazines (ONM, OPSM and Amiga magazines) and feel they hold a magic that the internet will never have.

I am glad though there are websites like this that have a great community, which can carry on the legacy.

Re: Video: Cloud Gaming Is Viable In The Future Based On This Assassin's Creed Odyssey Review

Turrican280

Physical copies are much better in my opinion. I prefer my games on cartridge/disc and my music on CD.

The problem is, streaming is the future, just look at Netflix and spotify. When the internet speeds are sufficiently quick enough, it will be mainstream. Gaming companies will use this as the future majority medium for gaming as it is cheaper and more viable from a business perspective.

I feel there are negatives and positives to this. (I’ll assume internet speeds are sufficiently quick)

Positives:
-Nintendo will not be inhibited by it’s hardware, therefore AAA titles will become the norm.

-If it is subcription based and you play a game you don’t enjoy, no problem as you haven’t bought it and can move on to your next game.

-Less physical software production costs for games companies which should go back into the game development.

-In theory developers will only have to develop for one format instead of porting/developing for each console.

-Depending on how many games you play it may be cheaper if it is a set monthly subscription.

Negatives:

-No physical copy. A big downside for me. No box, art, manuals etc.

-As with micro transactions, if not monitored correctly, the consumer can be completely taken advantage of financially.

-What @braneman said: games can be shut down anytime if a new release comes out.

-You will never own a copy. Even digitally downloaded software has ownership, but streamed content will never be yours.

-Control is taken away from the consumer and handed over to the developers.

-Depending on how many games you play, a subscription service could work out more expensive.

-Again, no physical copy.

I feel that physical copies NEED to continue even if streaming is the future. And if it is the future, it needs to be consumer friendly to have a large take up. It can been good but it needs to be done for the right reasons.

Re: UK Gaming Magazines GamesMaster and GamesTM Set To Close Next Month

Turrican280

A very sad day indeed.

I buy the occasional GM magazine, but unfortunately when you can get new information instantly they were fighting a losing battle.

I really feel GamesMaster could still be a big voice, but in a different way other than a magazine. I can imagine a tv show (even though it has been done before) or youtube channel would work well for them if it is done in the correct way.

Re: Cities: Skylines Is Out Now On The Nintendo Switch

@MadCow74

Hey, I can recommend this game based on my experiences with the PC version. Not sure how it runs on the Switch as I've read it has issues with it fps. However they were based on an old hands on impression at Gamescom this year, so it could be resolved.

In terms of how deep the train simulation is I'd say fairly deep. I enjoyed it as you have the passenger side, cargo side and metro side to deal with. However having never played a train sim I cannot compare. But I'd imagine it is no way near as deep as a game specifically based around train simulation.

Either way it is a great game and I enjoyed the train simulation side.

@Giygas_95

You just summed up all my thoughts completely.

I tried conveying these points to my friends who enjoyed VIII but they just don’t get it.

It just felt like a really bad marvel copy and paste Star Wars (And I like Marvel films).

Yes!!! The mumma joke at the beginning was just so so so out of place in a Star Wars film. Marvel humour shoehorned in.

I think the two bits that annoyed me the most which you covered; were the fact Luke was completely out of character. Even Mark Hamill said he was not his Luke Skywalker.

And Rey being so overpowered without the film showing you how she got these powers. It just felt like she didn’t earn them like you said. And don’t get me wrong I like Rey as a chracter.

I don’t think it’s a bad movie, I just think it is a bad Star Wars movie.

Re: Belgian Government Launches Criminal Investigation Into EA Over "Illegal" FIFA Loot Boxes

@Giygas_95

I think it helped me going in with low expectations for Solo after Last Jedi, so was pleasantly surprised when it was pretty enjoyable. Granted we didn’t need a Solo flick.

I don’t blame you not going to see it, VIII was very disappointing for me.

Yes, I feel Abrams is gonna be fighting an uphill battle, especially with the fans to get people back on board.

What were your reasons for not enjoying VIII?

Re: Belgian Government Launches Criminal Investigation Into EA Over "Illegal" FIFA Loot Boxes

Turrican280

@Giygas_95

My thoughts exactly.

I’ve all but given up with another KOTOR.
And after they shut down 1313 and the other single player Star Wars game which was in development, I fear we are only going to get more multiplayer loot box kinda games. 😑

I agree with you thoughts on the new films, especially episode 8. Although I do have to say, I kinda enjoyed Solo even though I went in wanting to really hate it. Granted it isn’t even close to the original trilogy, but it was massively tarnished by ep 8 in my opinion.

Re: The Top 10 Best-Selling Nintendo 3DS Games (As Of June 2018)

Turrican280

@LUIGITORNADO

I think what I wanted to convey was, Nintendo have so many franchises not included in that list (Zelda, DK, Luigi’s Mansion, Monster Hunter, Metroid, Fire Emblem etc.) that I would have thought would be on the list. So it was surprising for me to see games I didn’t expect to be as popular to outsell them; therefore reminding me how many popular franchises Nintendo have.

Which can’t be a bad thing 🙂
