This just in: Nintendo has announced it's acquired new land. According to an official PR, it has bought this land next to its Kyoto HQ for around $5 billion Yen (that's close to $40 million USD).
This new area will be home to the headquarters' second development building (tentative name). The purpose of the facility is to apparently strengthen its research and development, and the project is scheduled to be completed by 2027.
"In addition to the conventional R & D investment and capital investment, we have positioned the site to be acquired and utilized this time as having an important role in strengthening R & D."
Here's some additional information - Total floor area: About 38,000㎡ , Structure/height: Steel structure 12th floor, about 72m. If we hear anything else about this, we'll be sure to let you know.

Make it a purple, cube-shaped building!
They developing new botw2 features in there 🤣
Nintendo Land Wii U sequel?
It's official,
New Nintendo Land!
😜
@Erigen Plot twist: the next console will actually resemble that building. Switch Pro? Hah! No, we're getting the Nintendo Waffle Iron!
They’re going to take the WiiU where no WiiU has gone before. I salute the new Nintendo R&D building💂♂️
Soon they'll be able to release three extra games a year!
5 years away? I’m going to forget about this for a while.
Switch series cube .
Man I certainly hope they have a better design than the rectangle or box. Get creative Nintendo! Higher a creative architecture firm! Please make a decent, even Japanese inspired design. Not some concrete eyesore.
They are making the Sword Art Online headgear with that RnD
I’m sure a minority of fans think they’ll use it to make a new Mother or F-Zero game among other things.
@tyranny_life I know how about a giant Mario towering over every other Skyscraper in the city? 🤣
Microsoft: Acquires Activision for $68.7B
Sony: Acquires Bungie for $3.6B
Nintendo: Acquires a plot of land for $40M
NINTENDO I SWEAR TO GOD IF YOU DON’T MAKE THE BUILDING INTO A GIANT GAMECUBE I’M GONNA ******* COMBUST
To be completed by 2027, just like Metroid Prime 4 and Bayonetta 3
That building looks very stable.
They weren't kidding when they said they were going to focus on investing into resources to build up EPD, huh?
@sleepinglion No, this is just to give all the developers they're hiring for Prime 4 a place to work. Once the building is done, then they can finally start making the game.
That rendered photo seems quite optimistic about the number of employee cars they will have.
Does it come with an opening ceremony with Miyamoto dressed up like Willy Wonka?
Maybe they're building a Gundam hanger for a giant robot.

@Angelic_Lapras_King : Can we sign up to be Oompa Loompas?
I'm no Magic Johnson, but I can saw off my shins too.
38,000㎡ of floorspace for the new development building is a lot. That's probably about the same size as Nintendo's main Kyoto development center that houses most of Nintendo Kyoto EPD + Nintendo PTD + SRD (which Nintendo just acquired).
@Silly_G
I know that's meant to be a joke but releasing 3 extra games per year is a decent upgrade. That would be 18-21 additional first party games over the course of a 6-7 year hardware generation.
Lots of jokes in the comments, but I think this is legitimately exciting. Still a long ways away, but hopefully it means we won't be seeing "Nintendoomed" again next console generation like we did with the Wii U. They're really taking their R&D seriously, investing more than ever before. Hopefully, that means a quicker output of games. Switch has been mostly consistent with releases, but 2018 had some pretty big lulls when it came to first-party software. 2020 was a dud, too, but that may be attributed to the pandemic.
Sometime last year, Bill Trinen was asked during an interview what is something he knows about Nintendo that a lot of other people don't know. He said that Nintendo is surprisingly a much smaller company than most people would think. I think expanding their offices and bringing in fresh talent is a very good move. Between their partnership with Universal and now this, I think Nintendo is starting to take "the Disney of video games" more seriously than ever before. Between movies, parks, products such as LEGO Mario, and new hardware, Nintendo has a bright future ahead of themselves.
I really think Mario is only the start; pretty soon, I expect to see Zelda movies and promotional merch, new animated series, and a whole lot more. Only time will tell, but I think it's good Nintendo is going to stop being so tightly-nit. Change can be good, and it's about time they start trusting new recruits and other companies with their IP--hopefully without delving into Disney's unethical business practices on their way to the top.
I, for one, welcome our Nintendo overlords. ALL HAIL THE VIRTUAL BOY.
They needed somewhere to store all the unsold Nintendo Labo.
Great
But really long time until we will see results
It might have been better to buy an established building
It's the new building for covid19. 2 workers-programmers in every apartment. They will develop the next Mario thingy title..
The sequel to Kirby and the Forgotten Land, titled Kirby and the Acquired Land, is scheduled to release on December 2027.
@itslukec Nah, they just reuse the cardboard for new packaging.
When you realize this new Nintendo building is already in Street Fighter II three decades earlier.
@Specter_of-the_OLED I always liked how these two guys are nowhere to be found as playable characters in the game.
It's nice to see Nintendo grow. I'm certain they'll put the new building to good use!
Just in time for the launch of the Switch's successor! Remember, the Switch is only in the middle of its life cycle.
I think the whole building will house a single giant supercomputer - the most powerful computer in the world.
It will be called the ‘Switch Pro’ and Nintendo will win the console wars with it despite only having only made one console because it will be the first quantum post-blast-processing computational device on the planet and it will literally wipe out the competition and all known life on Earth.
That’s what I think.
Botw2 delayed till 2027, "We hope u undertand"
Good news. Better than expanding studios in China.
@Not_Soos Yeah I am very excited to see Nintendo taking their R&D very seriously. Not to say that they haven’t in the past, but the fact that they’re still expanding and improving it shows that they know there’s still room for them to grow as a company. This is still 5 years away, and I will likely forget about it, but it’s something to look forward to completion.
so happy to see that Nintendo is using it cash resouces to expand it development centres, more development centre means more franchise/games for us to play.
more development building for Nintendo, could means more amazing franchises/games for us to play.
38.000m² and 12 floor for the new development centre for it games/consoles, this is really good for the development of Nintendo games.
Wow, Nintendo really showing their creative sign with that building design.......
If you asked a child to draw a skyscraper, it would look like this!
@TheBigK Said the head of Nintendo. But you can guarantee a more powerful switch or their next system will be out long before 2027, the switch sales will peak this year and Nintendo will not be able to rely on sales of 10 year old system by 2027
Bet it gets delayed for the next version of Kyoto
@rjejr I for one welcome our Faced-Mechon Overlords.
@westman98 with this new development centre, Nintendo will expand EPD and maybe add a dedicated Donkey Kong/Metroid team, at the end of 2027, Nintendo will be one of the largest development divisions for her games, for 6.677 employees to 8.822 employees problaby
@Silly_G "Soon they'll be able to launch 3 games a year" There..fixed it for you haha
@Giancarlothomaz
I don't think Nintendo is paying for the construction of an entire new development building just to internally develop Donkey Kong or Metroid (this would be predicated on Nintendo and Mercury Steam not wanting to work together anymore which seems unlikely as Metroid Dread was a big success for both parties).
Internal expansion is happening within Nintendo because game development is becoming increasingly costly and time-consuming as games become more ambitious in scope, scale, and visual fidelity (this will only be more exacerbated when Nintendo starts developing games for 4K-capable hardware). If Nintendo wants to publish games and content at the same pace as they are right now, more employees are needed.
The purpose of the facility is to apparently strengthen its research and development, and the project is scheduled to be completed by 2027.
Other words Switch 2/pro developments.
