Re: Video: This is a Video Game

Squashy

@RainbowGazelle @ULTRA-64 I say computer games too and I'm English also. Maybe the name video games comes from America because I don't think I've ever heard an American say computer games. It would be an interesting piece of trivia to know! I loooooove trivia, there's nothing like a bit of useless information to make life more interesting I say.

Re: Legendary Actor and Comedian Robin Williams Has Died at 63

I'm also terribly sad to hear this. He was and is one of my favourite actors, I only watched Mrs. Doubtfire recently, such a classic! I'll have a look at Zelda's fundraiser that you mentioned, I would be more than happy to donate to both support a great cause and to honour her fantastic father

Re: Events: If You're Attending Hyper Japan 2014, Don't Forget To Say Hello

Squashy

@antdickens @ThomasBW84 Hope you had fun and got a good amount of time on the games!

If one of you happen to see this, could you tell me whether they have air conditioning there? I'm hoping to go to the event either tomorrow or Sunday but I'm in the odd predicament where my parents will only take me if there's air con! (Yeah it's really that critical to them haha)

Thanks very much!

Re: Rare Co-Founder Tim Stamper Is Back In The Games Industry

Squashy

@b_willers It's 02 under the logo so that picture must have been taken when Rare were bought by Microsoft in 2002.

@ecco6t9 Wouldn't it be great if all the old Rare talent now joins this company and they team up with Nintendo to buy back Rare, therefore kicking all the Microsoft riff raff out of the Rare headquarters and moving back in to make brilliant games again and live happily ever after! Ahh, a wonderful thing that would be, just like a gaming fairytale hehe.

Re: Rare Co-Founder Tim Stamper Is Back In The Games Industry

@midnafanboy Don't worry, be pleased cos you've just learned about the importance of one of the most legendary development studios ever, I seriously recommend you read about their story and general brilliantness! You can stop when you get to the Microsoft part though, that's when it gets sad, basically Microsoft forcibly bought Rare and destroyed them, but while they were with Nintendo they were wonderful so check them out.

@ThomasBW84 Are there any pictures of the Stamper Bros during the Nintendo era you could use in the article instead? Seeing them next to the Xbox logo brings back bad memories and makes me cry inside

Re: Rare Co-Founder Tim Stamper Is Back In The Games Industry

Wow exciting news, great to see that his son (presumably) is taking after his Dad, it's just a shame that they're making games for pooey mobile phones instead of real consoles. Although hopefully it's just a temporary thing to get going and then they'll make games for consoles.

Re: The Unreleased Super Mario 64 DD Edition Appears to Have Been Uncovered

Squashy

@Pinemeowth This is a rather exciting find for that guy, what a cool thing to own!

@Zombie_Barioth and @FragRed I've never heard of the PS2 being difficult to develop for, for some reason I was always under the impression that it's easy but I know the PS3 is complicated to work with.

Anyway something I do know is that N64 DD disks are 64MB, and N64 cartridges come in several sizes. For example Super Mario 64 is a 64Mbit (8MB) cartridge, quite a lot of games are 128Mbit, and then the big size cartridge is 256Mbit (so 32MB). Ocarina Of Time was the first 256Mbit game, making it the biggest ever cart at the time of release and 4 times the size of Super Mario 64!

Later on in the N64's life however, the cost of making cartridges came down enough for a whopping (for a cartridge at the time) 512Mbit (64MB) to be possible, and that's what Resident Evil 2 and Conker's Bad Fur Day are. It did mean of course that the memory advantage offered by DD disks no longer mattered because a cart the same size as the disks was now possible.

Re: The Nintendo 64 is Now 18 Years Old in Japan

Squashy

Happy Birthday to one of the best consoles ever!!! My Nintendo 64 was the first console I ever had bought brand new for me, I love it to bits! The N64 really is a golden era for me

@FragRed What a bargain!

@GuSolarFlare Nice I wish I still had the TV my N64 was first set up on.

@dinosauryoshi My Dad and I have had the best of times playing Mario Kart 64 too!

@FalconPunch You have to get one you owe it to yourself as a Nintendo fan!

Re: Handle Stand Adds Steering Wheelosity to Your Wii U GamePad

Squashy

@DarthPraxis That's a cracking bit of kit as Jason Plato (English racing driver) would say! Maybe you could sell your design to Sega or Namco for their arcade machines haha, I also love the carbon fibre effect on the steering column, nice touch!

@Blue-Thunder Legend has it that the clip on the Classic Controller is for a Rumble Pak that was going to be released for it, which sadly never came to be...

Re: Reminder: Nintendo's Wi-Fi Service on Wii and DS Closes on 20th May

Squashy

@Grumblevolcano #116 Nice! I was still playing Mario Kart an hour after the shut down, but stupidly I thought the fact it was still working meant that it hadn't been shut off yet so I quit the game to switch to Smash Bros and then of course I was stuffed! So were there still lots of people playing when you got disconnected just now?

Re: Reminder: Nintendo's Wi-Fi Service on Wii and DS Closes on 20th May

Squashy

@Bulbousaur and @Blue-Thunder I just had the idea to go on Nintendo's Japanese website to see if that had the exact details and great news, it does! Even better news though it that the Wi-Fi doesn't go off until on the 20th itself so we still have tomorrow to play!

We don't have all of tomorrow though, it states that it goes off at 23:00 which converted to England time is 3PM so bear that in mind.

Here's the link to the page: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/support/information/2014/0227.html

You'll need Google Translate to make any sense of it of course unless you can read Japanese!

Re: Wii Fit U Update 1.2.0 Trims And Slims for a Better U

Squashy

@bagszi O right I see, I stupidly just assumed that you were from England as well, apologies if I came across a bit rude. That sounds like a bizarre situation for Hungarian Nintendo players, so if you go into a games shop in Hungary, are all the Nintendo consoles and games UK versions?

Re: Play: Mario Kart 7 with Nintendo Life

Squashy

That was a lot of fun thanks for the races everybody and thanks Tom for organising it!

@Knuckles Hi there we had a couple of good races!

@BenAV You and Peach make a fearsome team haha

Re: Wii Fit U Update 1.2.0 Trims And Slims for a Better U

Squashy

@bagszi Why do you want to do that? Stones and pounds are where it's at! It always gets on my nerves when we have to have kph in racing games instead of mph because of the rest of Europe. Darn foreigners trying to force their metric system on us lol.
