Unpopular opinion: missing the multiplayer, but as a guy who logged a ton of hours playing back in 2005, I was just looking for solo or couch vs. Galactic Conquest. With these fixes, I'm getting what I wanted.
Now if they would just let me shed the dead weight of the multiplayer and shrink this install size to 5 or 6gb....
I can't stick with one game, so for my Switch, Sniper Elite III, the 3DS, some Star Fox 64, and might finally delve into Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen on my SNES Classic.
This looks cool, but I'd really like it if Square-Enix would quit fiddle-fartin' around and release a new Dragon Quest Monsters in the West (and the 3ds remake of the original.) DWM beat Pokemon Gold at breeding mechanics when they were released on the GBC.
N64, and a service architecture that lets me transfer my purchases forward. This is the only solution for me. Not more games that have been re-released a million times, that we just had released on a mini-console. Even Disney has opened the vault more than Nintendo, and I feel the thriving ROM scene is fed by many customers who would gladly pay for old games that have been locked away.
My kid loves it. I just wish they'd let me play the credits from the menu, without having to beat the last level each time. The credits are one of her favorite parts!
I disagree with the majority. I like the a la carte option. I have good memories of playing Double Dragon III on the NES with my dad, but don't have any interest in most of the others. Glad I don't have to pay $40 to relive the fond memories found in one game. I like having the option to get them as a collection, or buy them separately.
This lives forever as one of my favorite JRPGs, and is the darling of my Gamecube games. I would pay handsomly for a sequel or special edition re-release.
I know some are still salty about how short it is for the price, but as an adult with a career, I love how it's paced. Those bite-sized chuncks of gameplay are perfectly suited to my schedule. Although I love the open world of modern Zeldas, these shorter dungeons are such a fulfilling experience.
All the complaints about the dungeon maker are so entitled. No, it's not Mario Maker. That was a full game. This is a side feature. The two won't be the same, and for what it is, it's a neat feature. Get off it.
Dragon Warrior Monsters was hands-down my favorite GBC game. Its breeding mechanics put Pokemon Gold's to shame. Playground wars ensued, and getting Dark Drium took extensive planning and cooperative effort. Does this have an English option in the menus?
Crowdsourcing scores is messy, but valid to see what people really loved back in the day. No sense getting upset about aggregated nostalgia. I loved Bloody Roar, but had no illusions that most would give it the score I did.
Doom II was my first DOOM when it was released, and still my favorite. Reading Masters of Doom really deepens the appreciation of everything that went into these games and the great leap forward that they were in their time.
P.S. The super shotty remains my trump card in the late game. Yeah, use the shotgun against most of the peons, but the Super is really meant for the Archviles, Pain Elementals, Barons of Hell, and Cyberdemons. The shotgun is a pea shooter in those confrontations.
I've been waiting since 2016 DOOM for this! DOOM II especially was a big part of spurring my interest in gaming. Guess I'll sip some coffee and re-read Masters of Doom until this pops up again!
I'm more surprised about how completely patronizing the tone of this opinion piece was! It's not rare to see pieces that condescend to their readership, but to climb nearly to the top of that rhetorical sore...nicely done, James!
I never understood why we see this and its sequel everywhere. Such a terrible game for a re-release. Underappreciated Genesis gems: Road Rash, General Chaos, and Dinosaurs for Hire. Where are those?!
@Zuljaras I did too, and I can't explain why. I have LA on the GBC and 3DS, but this felt like a re-make that was too good to pass up, and that had to have its art fully appreciated.
@Buizel Transferring forward and not gate-keeping is an essential feature of the Pokemon series. And regardless, it's clear from this clip that Nintendo's thinking on the issue has changed dramatically on the issue. Thinking that has been remarkably consistent for the past 23 years.
Masuda: "For everyone whose played the Pokemon series for a long time, I'm sure all the Pokemon that you've trained are VERY important to you, so I hope you can take them with you and make them come alive."
@rjejr True. Look, at the end of the day, I feel misled by their actions toward the transfer system, and would argue that after every generation since ruby/sapphire, this is a feature of the game that should take priority.
At the end of the day, video game companies don't owe us anything other than their honesty about their products. Rules of capitalism here. They don't owe me a good product, and I don't owe them my money. But an accurate explanation of their product is foundational to this exchange. I've stayed with the series since its inception, and even kept with it during the GBC-GBA purge, because I could see the technical hurdles. I don't see them here, and "Nintendo knows best" is patronizing....at best.
This seems to be more of an apologetic than an actual atricle. "EDITORIAL," or "TALKING POINT" may have been helpful. The fact remains that this is a terrible move, to create Pokemon, to encourage gamers to play with them, and not tell them that they will take them away later, and that it was "always the plan."
...That really just makes it more of a betrayal of the player base, especially after launching Bank, then Home, and promising gamers it would be there to transfer their Pokemon.
Also, if the problem is Dynamaxing, forget it. I'm tired of these mechanics that exist for a generation and then are dropped. They always seem to be weakly done.
This is pure "bait-and-Switch" by the House of Mario, and I would hope game journalists would hold them to account for it. Gamers and their wallets certainly will.
@Purgatorium I didn't play Chrono Trigger until my early 20s, and it remains the best written RPG I've ever played. Some ride on nostalgia; Chrono Trigger is great in any era slaps knee
What a mistake from the director. If people want to experience your best work, why would anyone wish it to stay behind a 20 year-old wall? Even if the Gamecube version was 'more than enough,' why not let more people experience that perfect version?
Beyond excited for this. I love indies that respect historical eras and bring them to life. Cuphead pulls the 1930s right out and makes it fresh for the modern crowd.
@EasyDaRon You're limiting yourself to too few games! Ogre Battle 64, Paper Mario, and Mario 64 still hold up graphically, and the N64 still has some multiplayer gems that are quality multiplayer experiences. Perhaps this newfound relationship with Microsoft brings us the updated Perfect Dark that came out on the 360.
I'm a huge fan of porting older games to the switch, though this one has me pretty disinterested. You can dumpster-dive $5 copies of B2 where I am. Perhaps if it was the whole Handsome Jack collection, then I'd bite. Until then, my bizzare fantasy remains Unreal Tournament on Switch.
This was the very first N64 game I laid eyes on. A lucky friend got an N64 with Mario, Turok, and Shadows of the Empire for his birthday. I plan on getting this for the nostalgia. The worst part of the control scheme (moving with the C-buttons) is gone now, so I bet I'm much better at it!
1. Chrono Trigger 2. Ogre Battle (sorely underappreciated) 3. Killer Instinct 4. NBA Jam (90s multi at its best) 5. Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time (pipe dream).
Legally, if I buy it physically, it's my property. Not so with digital, where I'm only licensing it. So if it's digital only, I'll buy it. Otherwise, I'm paying to own something.
