Re: Rumour: The Next DLC Fighter For Smash Bros. Ultimate Might Be Representing SNK

Rexx

@thesilverbrick I am, which another commenter also pointed out. I didn't say he was a Nintendo property, more that he was representative of Nintendo.

To my knowledge, the character has only ever appeared on Nintendo platforms (excluding mobile). The same can be said for Phoenix Wright.

I shouldn't have assumed others would be able to read between the lines of what I was saying there. I'll be terrifically clear in the future!

@Galarian_Lassie

I was wondering if someone would be pedantic enough to point this out. It should be obvious by context that I was referring to characters most would see as identifiably belonging to Nintendo platforms or properties.

I for one think of Phoenix Wright and Professor Layton on my DS, for example.

I'm glad I was able to satisfy your urge 😜

Re: Game Freak Prefers To "Implement New Things Fairly Gradually" In Pokémon

Rexx

It's hard not to think a big reason.for these gradual changes is because of the demand to keep up with the expectation of a new game every year or so.

I wonder - if Game Freak took a few years between games to make these big changes - would the community be OK with that wait?

I suppose they could pad the time between with "remixed" versions of other games in he series in the meantime?

Re: Gunman Clive Creator Admits Cuphead Has Him "Excited And Terrified" About His Next Game's Launch

@NImH this is a really disgusting attitude. Grow up and meet some interesting people, or stop consuming culture if you don't wanna get a look into a perspective different from your own. Ugh.

I hope you're either joking (in which case, be smart AND funny next time) or somehow misspoke. I'm pretty sure the developer is queer so there's no way his gesture was anything but sincere.

Re: Nintendo Will Remove Smash Bros. Ultimate's Offensive Depiction Of Native Americans

Rexx

I can weigh in here since not only did I do something aligned to this as my minor, but I’m also a queer person of colour (not Native American), so I have an idea of how to respond.

It’s... less appropriate the remove the figure. There’s very little in the way of “stereotyping” going on with the depiction, and really is nothing more than cosplaying rather than something perpetuating the suppression of a culture. Think of something how blackface mocks people of colour whilst simultaneously removing their voice from the media. Or, more appropriately, how the Redskins have a racist slur embedded into their team name. This isn’t that.

What this leads to is a phenomenon called a structuring absence, where for whatever reason, a representation is removed from a text. This means diverse representation is overturned and creates a vacuum in which only the dominant culture (in this case: straight white men) is given prominent representation.

It’s proven that diversity in media has led to greater equality in society. I’m not sure this was the right decision on Nintendo’s part. I wonder if they consulted with Native American councils on this decision? If there are any Native American people here I’d love to hear your perpective!

Sorry for the long post! Hopefully it doesn’t get buried in the comments

Re: Something Big Is About To Happen To Pokémon GO's Gyms

Rexx

The local mystic gang I see speculating that gyms will be set up on a first come first served basis - eliminating the need for really powerful Pokémon to occupy the gyms.

I hope this is the case because the most powerful aren't necessarily my favourite
