Chaos has ensued since the Squid Research Lab found out that one half of the Squid Sisters has vanished. Many people are concerned about Callie's disappearance hoping for new information to shed some light on her whereabouts. Callie's sister in the meantime has set up base in Cap'n Cuttlefish's absence as she leads the search. Now details have emerged about Splatoon 2's single player campaign, mentioning Marie, the Octarians and what new weapons they have acquired.
Making his return from the original Splatoon outing is Sheldon, who is bringing with him an arsenal of mad weaponry for you to test out in the ongoing war. New contraptions such as the Inkfurler and Rolonium are shown in action, giving players an insight into what to expect.
The full report from the Squid Research Lab can be read below:

Unbeknownst to the population of Inkopolis, the fight against the Octarian army rages on. It’s up to you to investigate Octo Canyon, the secret underground world of the Octarians. You won’t be alone though as Callie’s best friend Marie has been keeping a close watch on the Octarians in Cap’n Cuttlefish’s absence. No clue where he is, by the way, we’re mainly just impressed by Marie’s ability to balance her busy lifestyle with this gargantuan responsibility.

As you progress through Hero Mode, Sheldon will provide you with many different weapons from his shop Ammo Knights. Don’t think he’s acting out of the kindness of his heart, though! Sheldon is a shrewd business-crab, and you’re doing him a favour by testing out new weapons against the Octarians. But fair is fair, and in exchange he’ll make Hero Mode weapons available to you to use in Turf Wars! What a nice chap.

Throughout Hero Mode, you’ll come across all sorts of bizarre contraptions and this ride rail is just one of them! Hop aboard and you’ll automatically zip along at breakneck speed! Jump while riding to fling yourself high into the air. Show off your freshest tricks as you blaze through stages!

Meanwhile, this contraption right here is an Inkfurler. When you come across them, they’ll be rolled up tightly, but with a generous splash of ink they unfurl nicely. You can move with ease across an unfurled one, and the force of an unrolling Inkfurler can knock out enemies, too. Move quickly though! Once a certain amount of time has passed – or if hit with enemy ink – it will roll back up.

And lastly, let’s take a look at some Rolonium. When hit, it’ll roll off with a whole lot of oomph and squish anything in its path – including Octarians! Shoot it at an angle from underneath to launch it into the air. Some Octarians will attack using the Rolonium, but if you time it right, you can whack it right back at them!
This new update arrives after we received our first look at Hero Mode during the Arms Direct a few weeks ago when the Squid Research Lab hacked the presentation. If you're not caught up with the story you can read the ongoing saga surrounding the Squid Sisters here.
As always, any new findings presented from the Squid Research Lab will be reported immediately as the search for Callie continues. Will you be joining the search party come July? Leave us a comment.

Will there a way to play as an octoling later?
Well, as others have mentioned, hoping the single player campaign is longer than the previous game :B
Still waiting to play as the octarian girls...
Off topic but I feel like the next smash is going to have Callie and Marie as characters as well as the inkling boy/girl. They could use music as their attacks, kick with their boots, etc. I think it could be an interesting character.
The campaign mode in the first game was fun but way too short.
Alright, single player mode...the mode I've been waiting to hear more about! I love how they are like "we don't know where Capt'n is" and they sorta don't care. That is the power of Marie.
I'm loving all the research notes and this is my hype game of 2017. Can't wait!!
Single player mode in Splatoon was brilliant and I would have paid for DLC for it. Here's hoping for 2 to be just as good and expanded on
Callie and Marie are cousins. You referred to them as sisters, not in the context of their stage name.

Okay, that's straight-up an MP90 SMG with lime green paint in the second image.
Online multiplayer was stressing me out but I'd rent Splatoon 2 for a week for the single player, first games single player was great. If they sold an amiibo that turned the entire single player invisible I would have bought it.
Preordered and waiting for release!
@G0dlike Same here! This, PRG Maker for 3DS, and of course, Mario Odyssey.
I have still barely played my copy of Splatoon on the Wii U that I've had since launch. Its focus on multiplayer has meant I always have something else to play. What's the one player game on the original like? Reading this article suggests the one player campaign might be more fleshed out than I realised?
Mario Odyssey goes with out saying, that game is gonna be incredible @invictus4000
@GravyThief: I'd describe it as a 3D platformer with your weapon being key to knock out both enemies and to lay down ink for travel. There are 5 or so areas to explore and get through, each with a final boss there are not exactly easy to beat the first go-round. The final boss battle is pretty epic.
Single player was really fun in Splatoon 1, but it was way too short. If it's significantly longer in Splatoon 2, then I'll be much more tempted to pick this game up.
Looks good.
Gotta agree with the rest, the single player was too short. I really enjoyed it, but let's be frank here, it was just a very elaborate tutorial — probably the best tutorial I've ever played, but still just a tutorial.
It's not just that it was short, but also that it really had little to no replayability, and any "replayability" it had was basically locked away behind the amiiboo.
I think the game is no just in need of a longer campaign, but also reasons to play it more than once, plus, well ... a higher difficulty. This is still a shooter at heart after all - Nintendo spin or not.
If they can deliver on that, then I'm genuinely excited for the game, maybe even more so for the single player than for the multiplayer - at least now that we know, that this will once more be a rather isolated affair at least as far as online is concerned.
This kinda killed the Splatoon 1 for me, and so I'd doubt it will be any different here. In that regard, a more substantial multiplayer would really be most welcome.
@bluedogrulez thanks. It certainly sounds more enticing than I thought. I think I'll play it next!
@BensonUii Yeah that one immediately cought my eye too! I wanna see it in action!
@ieatdragonz You are so right. The squid boy is my favorite new characters to use in MK8. They'll be in Super Smash Switch for sure
This all seems very confusing to me, hopefully it explains the story well in game for people like me and for people who haven't seen this stuff at all. Maybe right now it's just because I never played the original Splatoon.
I lol'd at the "Ammo Knights" pun hahaha
This is good news for me. Campaign mode is key for me to make this a day one purchase. SEVEral vets have mentioned the originals campaign mode was a glorified tutorial. I'm hoping that single player is more fleshed out in the sequel.
My girlfriend is looking forward tonight to splatoon, but online is a place she won't touch.
The first game had a mediocre hero mode that was actually fun to speed run that had an incredible final boss. I look forward to see what they have in store for hero mode 2.
Looks awesome, I can't wait!
I didn't buy the original Splatoon because I heard the single-player was very short (for that same reason I might never buy Arms. The single-player doesn't sound that big). If they now have made a bigger single-player for Splatoon 2, I may pick it up someday!
@Gridatttack Still waiting for a Octoling campaign
While the single player of 1 was short, it was awesome. And really, it wasn't that short when you consider how many modern shooters have not many more levels, but with bland game play ad no epic bosses.
The final boss in Splatoon alone makes the entire frst game worth buying.
Looks great. Too bad I can't find a Switch for less than $450...
well they give us a story this time???
The singleplayer on Splatoon was "decent".
It did feel however slightly soulless. Yes it had a story, but it was quite minimal.
I feel it needed something to jazz it up a bit. It felt a little empty and mechanical, served the purpose of just being there, so that they could say it was there.
