My only hope for this new Zelda is that it's released before the end of the Wii U's lifecycle. Assuming they start on it right away, even with Nintendo's polishing procedures, it should be done in time. I think Nintendo should just make Zelda a once a generation thing, and only a console experience. This might give Aunoma more time to work on other fresh projects and it will also prevent the series from becoming over exposed, which it's definately in danger of at the moment.
Wow, massive fanboyism going on in here, on both ends of the spectrem. These comments don't surprise me though considering this is a Sony developer. It's also really hard for anyone to make a final judgment call on Wii U anyway because there's still so much that isn't known about it. Based on what Nintendo's done in the past, I'm certain it won't be cutting edge but I don't see it being a slouch in the power department either. Nintendo seems serious about bringing back core gamers so I'm sure they know what they need to do to do that. They also seem aware of the mixed reactions to it at E3 and I'm sure the feedback they're getting will be taken into account when they finalize the systems power and how it'll be marketed. Don't expect a beast of a super computer but don't assume it'll just end up another Wii either. I'm eager to learn more and when Nintendo comfirms it's finalized, that will be the time to place judgment.
Meh. The inclusion of HDMI pretty much proved this information already. For me, though, 3D isn't worth the extra costs involved. In fact I just bought a TV and saved nearly a grand by purchasing an equal sized screen without the technology. That's a lot of tacos man.
Peaple who hate Nintendo? Are you being serious? Take your fanboy glasses off and look at the situation for what it is and not just as a forum for people to attack Nintendo. Nintendo is a wonderful developer and deserves accolades for that but as a business, they leave so much to be desired and I don't understand how anyone couldn't agree with that.
To make it as clear as possible for you; Nintendo games = good. Nintendo company = bad.
Obviously a lot of us are still tending the burns Nintendo inflicted on us with it's response to Operation Rainfall, so I think even among the most die hard fans, faith in the company just might be at an all time low right now. That being said, as much as I hate the higher ups running Nintendo, I have to give Iwata the credit he deserves. He took a company that was on it's way out and made it relevent again. He's a smart business man, and he's clearly demonstrated that he can not only innovate the products his company sells but also recognize when there are problems to overcome too. He's made it clear he sees what's going on with 3DS and Wii U, in terms of the publics general perception of these products, and I'm anxious to see what his solutions are. Is he guarenteed to make everything peachy keen again? Of course not, but he's shown in the past that he's more than capable to take on the task, no matter the outcome.
Don't tell us to calm down! We Americans have a right to be upset about this you know. I just can't believe Nintendo is being so thick headed about these games. Can't they see it's actually severely tarnishing their image to even the most faithful of Nintendo fans? How can they seriously expect us to be on board with the upcoming Wii U system when they can't even acknowledge what we want now? Nintendo has a hell of a battle ahead of them because without those fans, the very same that sustained the company through the N64 and GCN years, and with the fickle nature of the casuals, the company has pretty much nothing to hang onto this time. I'll be heartbroken to see Nintendo as a developer go down, but I'll truly enjoy seeing Nintendo as a company fail as a result of decisions like this.
I love Nintendo as a developer but as a company they have to be te most impersonnal out there. Whether these games would've sold or not, the fact remains that even in the face of angry fans, not only pleading, but putting actual money on the table, are still treated like they don't matter. I hate that the hobby I love so much is dictated by men in suits who have no compassion for what their customers want.
I think this being published outside of Japan is extremely unlikely. I could see Nintendo putting the NES versions up on Virtual Console though. Individually, of course.
No doubt this will be a memorable Zelda adventure and the more I hear about it the more I feel like this will truly be a much more refreshing take on the series. Can't wait! It'd sure be nice to have some other Wii games to play in the meantime though. >
So in the end this decision really benefits no one. Well hopefully retailers all over do the same as to keep this from becoming a trend. Seriously I miss the old days of gaming where you'd buy a game once and it was yours to do with what you wished and didn't have to endure stupid things like one time saves and DLC that is technically already in the game you paid for. What is going on with these publishers these days?
I find it weird that NOE decided TODAY was the right day to announce this. Not sure if it was to help North American gamers plight by building hype or rather to rub it in that they got to publish this sweet game and we didn't. In either case NOA has to comment on this situation sooner or later as Operation Rainfall is a much more serious and efficient fan campaign then any other I've ever seen. Starman.net must be so confused right now but in the end maybe this will even help them out. You never know.
The Last Story is particularly vexing as to why they won't bring over. All they have to do is put "From the creator of Final Fantasy" on the box and people will buy it based on that alone.
Did my part though, I both e-mailed them AND pre-ordered the game on Amazon, the latter of which I think will speak volumes more than anything else being done to persuade Nintendo on this. Normally I wouldn't think petitions and the like would do much but this time it seems different and that everything happening will be hard for Nintendo to ignore. But yeah, we Nintendo fans stand united on this and I'm very proud to see it.
Clearly Nintendo is running out of games to put up for Wii's Virtual Console. Sad to say we may not get games like Yoshi's Island or Starfox, unless they are saving those for Wii U or something. Say, come to think of it, has Nintendo even mentioned Virtual Console being available on the new system yet?
I fell into the trap myself, hearing all this praise about the game. When I played it, though, I couldn't see why Sonic Colors was a step in the right direction as everyone was saying and any better than the garbage Sonics put his name on in the last 12 years.
If the Wii had a jam packed schedule of games this year like it did in 2010, I could understand why Nintendo would pass on these more obscure titles. Let's face it though, beyond Kirby and Skyward Sword, there's not a whole lot to get Wii fans through the rest of the systems life cycle. Wii U won't likely come till the second half of 2012, so it makes no sense to hold on to any games right now. There's time, little competition from other titles and more than enough people who want to buy this game to make a small print run worth while. Also on top of that, where the hell is NPC! Pikmin 2 for the US Nintendo? What are you guys doing over there exactly?
Here's a thought Square-Enix; why not just release it on Wii U AND PS3 AND Xbox360? What's the point of limiting this game to just one console anyway and with the afformentioned systems being so close in architecture, there is no reason not to. It would cover that large range of people you want to sell your game to, give them a choice as to which version would suit them best and also pontentially help build Wii Us userbase in it's initial years on the market. Sure, the game will break records even if sold on the original Wii, but only in Japan. If you really expect worldwide success of this title, you have to get it on as many CURRENT systems as possible.
If the hardware is comparable and easy to port to, then there is no reason for any third party developer to NOT support the Wii U. The more avenues in which to sell your products, with minimal cost, can only be seen as a good thing for everyone involved.
I know a lot of people might point to the Gamecube as a counter argument to this, but the situation is different now then it was 10 years ago. First of all, multiplatform releases are far more common these days. A lot of companies, in this economic climate, don't see as much benefit of console exclusives as they once have.
Second, Nintendo, unlike with the Gamecube, seems to be developing Wii U with 3rd party needs in mind right from the systems conception. The fact that Nintendo is reiterating over and over again, how they want a system everyone can enjoy really proves their devotion to making these developers happy with the Wii U. It seems every week a new, once Nintendo absent, developer brings praise to Nintendo for this new console and I'm sure there's more to come.
Anyone expecting more from the 3DS Virtual Console is out of their mind. Look at the slow release pattern of retro games on Wii right now. There is no reason to expect any different from the 3DS, so I'm not disappointed by it. I'm willing to bet Nintendo will eventually end up just alternating between console and portable VC titles each week, assuming they keep supporting the console side of things that is.
Also I would be willing to bet that Square Enix will send out a press release regarding Final Fantasy III before it's Virtual Console release, so we'll likely know ahead of time on that particular game. Next week I'm willing to bet it'll be Earth Defence Force as the VC game, then maybe two weeks after that, we'll get FFIII. A full four months after Europe... bravo NOA, bravo.
Meh. Mii's are fine as they are. What I like about them is the simple clean design and compared to Sony's Home uncanny valley characters and Microsofts downright goofy looking avitars, Mii's are much more pleasing asthetically in my opinion. Special clothes, hats and accessories are overkill for what should just be a simple digital avitar of ones self. I would like to see, however, the option to customize the menu interface of Wii U. Something even as simple as the option to place a wallpaper would suffice.
Not sure I care too much what the exact specs are. I mean I'm still amazed by PS3 games so if it's in that realm, I know it'll be enough. How much better could graphics get anyhow? I mean really.
I think it would be pretty safe to say this has to be one of the most wanted titles to show up on Virtual Console for sure. It definately is for me anyway. Glad to see the wheels are in motion at least.
Here's the thing about Dragon Quest; They could release X on the original Game Boy and the game would STILL sell like gangbusters. I'm confident that even if this game comes out two years from now (which is historically a likely projection) on Wii, it's not going to matter that the system has already been replaced. The Dragon Quest brand is that strong in Japan. However, having the game run in HD when played on Wii U might not be a bad idea either, although I wouldn't expect exclusive features to go much beyond that, save for using the controller screen for item management or something. Graphically though, it would just be a resolution increase.
What's with the mud slinging Jack? It also baffles my mind how he can say these kinds of things about Nintendo when Sony is the most notorious for taking their ideas and making them their own. Nintendo introduced analog sticks and BOOM, Sony added them. Nintendo did rumble and BOOM, Sony added it. Nintendo introduced a very specific split type motion controller and Sony blatently released there own. The similarities on the latter, I might add, are so rediculous I don't think anyone could say Sony was being original in that regard. In addition to all that, Sony didn't even pioneer online and HD gaming either, so these comments are so wrong here Jack really comes off as pretty arrogant and ignorant at the same time.
I agree that they could've come up with a better name than Wii U. I mean, P U! Am I right?
As for whether or not Nintendo is "too late" I'm not so sure he knows what he's talking about. Nintendo was able to differentiate themselves with the Wii and it was successful for them, obviously, despite the gimped hardware. Wii U could very well end up the same way as it seems unique enough. However, if this thing is going to be more than $300 I don't see that happening. Wii went in strong as an affordable, new experience and was also marketed well. This is why it was successful and Wii U would have to do AT LEAST that to do anywhere near as well.
For the console, I was kind of underwhelmed when I first saw it and thought it was rather bland looking. When I saw better pictures and video of the unit, I've come to love the simple sleek design. Also it might look less bland once the WiiU logo is applied to it. Another plus is the new HDMI port complete with Liniar PCM digital audio, a first for a Nintendo console! The fact it uses the same AV Multi cables and sensor bar as the Wii are a good design choice too.
Now the controller is a bit harder to discern for me. I like that it has all the basic functionallity of the standard classic controllers the Wii uses but the choice of using slide pads instead of analog sticks is a bit concerning. Other than that I can't really comment as I have to actually hold it in my hands before I can judge but from all accounts I've heard, it's actaully quite comfortable to use.
Those expecting much more than Nintendo is doing now are really only setting themselves up for disappointment. Nintendo isn't just suddenly going to roll out the perfect online structure. I think an accurate assessment will be that it'll be slightly improved from what the 3DS set up is right now. Oh, and friend codes, albeit now a single one, are here to stay unfortunately.
I find it so surprising how there are people out there up in arms because this new system isn't using the most cutting edge graphics technology. Historically, this rarely had any baring on a systems success. Just look at Wii for example. Maybe it's because Wii is my current system of choice (with PS3 close behind) this generation, but I'm thrilled that Nintendo is coming out with a new system that can compete with HD systems out right now. Even if it's only marginally better than the PS3, this really should be enough to make people happy. The thought of playing a new Mario or Zelda in 1080p with all those nifty graphical effects is enough to validate this new system for me. Of course I can understand the naysayers in the sense that, even though Nintendo can now get comparable ports of 360 and PS3 games, what's going to make them choose the WiiU version over versions on systems they already own? Although I find the new controller neat, I kind of get that same vibe I did when the Wii Remote was a new thing in that, while offering an experience no one else has, I don't know if it'll be enough to sway the tougher critics. It's my hope that when Nintendo has actual software to show, along with 3rd Party exclusives that are high caliber enough, maybe then, those neck deep in the Sony and Microsoft pools will take the system seriously. As it seems now though, the days of a Nintendo console that truly appeals to everyone look as though they died with the SNES all those years ago.
I'd just like to say that I'm not a "Sonic fan" at all. I'm a fan of GOOD games and just because I don't automatically give a mediocre, or worse, game kudos because of what characters are featured there in, doesn't make me some kind of hypocryte, which is what seems to be implied here. If you like Sonic as a character and are willing to purchase half baked games because of it, more power to you, but don't sit there and defend him to the death to those who refuse to accept the tripe Sega's been shoving down the industries throat for the past 12 years.
@16 TeeJay Shouldn't this be obvious? The majority of his games suck. He's awkward looking. He mates with other species. He lives in the real world. He has too many lame friends. His voice keeps changing. Etc. Etc. I don't understand how anyone can defend what Sonic has become. I will give him the honor of perfectly representing what Sega has become, however. A souless shell of it's former self.
It seems to me though, that consoles aren't the big draw they use to be. Of course I don't imagine we'll ever see an iPhone game as deep as a console Zelda or Final Fantasy game either. Perhaps Nintendo can revitalize the market with their Project Cafe but it's too early to tell, obviously.
Wait, isn't that Virtual Console games two weeks in a row? It'd seriously be unfair if they didn't do that for us as well, especially considering how far behind Europe we already are.
I always thought any Genesis game on Virtual Console was published by Sega, even if they were made by a different developer. Either way I still really want those games on VC.
It's probably sad that the only thing I want to see Ubisoft port over to Project Cafe is Beyond Good & Evil HD, which isn't anything more than a simple resolution increase.
Super Adventure Island is my personal favorite in the entire series and definately a game worth checking out if you're a fan of platformers. Can't wait to get this in the states!
What a glorious Monday update it'll be! I was upset that Europe held on to FF3 for so long but even if we have to wait another few months for it, this more than makes up for it. Can't wait to load this masterpeice onto my Wii console next week!
The fact that it's the day before Nintendo's E3 presser definately indicates there might be a little extra something special about this update. What that could be, I have no clue but we'll find out in less than a month.
Maybe this'll start up Sega's regular VC releases again. I was always sad that we never got Castlevania Bloodlines or Contra Hard Corps, when it appeared Sega wasn't releasing VC titles anymore.
Meh, who cares. Just a corporate drone to pretend like he cares about what he's trying to sell you when the truth is he's just trying to pad out his resume. Nothing to see here folks!
Okay there are well over a dozen vc games in the queue and it's growing all the time, so why are we still only getting one every two weeks? All those Jeleco games I thought we here in the US would be fortunate enough to avoid have all just been rated by the ESRB which means it could be months before great games like Final Fantasy III, Super Adventure Island and Chrono Trigger show up for download, which makes these weeks of nothing all the more painful to swallow.
I think it's a safe bet that Nintendo is going to bring this and Last Story to the states. If for any reason just because there probably isn't much else in development for the Wii due to it's impending successor.
Well the people buying Kinect aren't the same people who'd buy a game like Skyward Sword, so they both might sell next year, but to different audiences. Apples and Oranges.
Has Animal Crossing ever been a system seller though? Seems to me Mario is the big draw anyway, and if Animal Crossing slips into next year I don't think there are too many people out there who'll bat an eye, especially if it's like City Folk and just the same exact experience all over again.
Ugh! I thought the US wasn't going to be getting the Jeleco stuff, but unfortunately I was wrong. Between Adventure Island 2, Super Adventure Island, Super Adventure Island 2, Final Fantasy III, Mega Man 5 and Chrono Trigger, the queue was entirely games I wanted but now with this, Earth Defence Force, Brawl Brothers and The Ignition Factor thrown into the mix, the two weeks between releases becomes even more annoying. Lame.

Re: Wii U and Its Controller Near Their Final Form Factor
Re: Nintendo Taking "Massive Leap" with Wii U's Online Set-Up
Those expecting much more than Nintendo is doing now are really only setting themselves up for disappointment. Nintendo isn't just suddenly going to roll out the perfect online structure. I think an accurate assessment will be that it'll be slightly improved from what the 3DS set up is right now. Oh, and friend codes, albeit now a single one, are here to stay unfortunately.
Re: CryENGINE "Pretty Much Running" on Wii U
Then let's get to work on TimeSplitters 4 then!
Re: Rumour: Wii U is 50% More Powerful Than PlayStation 3
Re: Sonic Generations 3DS Rumours Gain Speed
I'd just like to say that I'm not a "Sonic fan" at all. I'm a fan of GOOD games and just because I don't automatically give a mediocre, or worse, game kudos because of what characters are featured there in, doesn't make me some kind of hypocryte, which is what seems to be implied here. If you like Sonic as a character and are willing to purchase half baked games because of it, more power to you, but don't sit there and defend him to the death to those who refuse to accept the tripe Sega's been shoving down the industries throat for the past 12 years.
Re: Sonic Generations 3DS Rumours Gain Speed
@16 TeeJay
Shouldn't this be obvious? The majority of his games suck. He's awkward looking. He mates with other species. He lives in the real world. He has too many lame friends. His voice keeps changing. Etc. Etc. I don't understand how anyone can defend what Sonic has become. I will give him the honor of perfectly representing what Sega has become, however. A souless shell of it's former self.
Re: Are We Nearing the End of Consoles? Nintendo Thinks Not
It seems to me though, that consoles aren't the big draw they use to be. Of course I don't imagine we'll ever see an iPhone game as deep as a console Zelda or Final Fantasy game either. Perhaps Nintendo can revitalize the market with their Project Cafe but it's too early to tell, obviously.
Re: Sonic Generations 3DS Rumours Gain Speed
No. He's not.
Re: Kirby's New DS Game Has a July Date with Japan
Meh. More interested in the new Wii Kirby coming out. Hopefully we'll hear more about it soon.
Re: Sonic Generations 3DS Rumours Gain Speed
Really hoping modern Sonic DIES at the end of this one.
Re: Nintendo Download: 16th May 2011 (North America)
Looks like Chrono Trigger saved what would otherwise have been a pretty lame update.
Re: Chrono Trigger Hits European Virtual Console on Friday
Wait, isn't that Virtual Console games two weeks in a row? It'd seriously be unfair if they didn't do that for us as well, especially considering how far behind Europe we already are.
Re: SEGA Announces More Virtual Console Titles for Wii
@James
I always thought any Genesis game on Virtual Console was published by Sega, even if they were made by a different developer. Either way I still really want those games on VC.
Re: Ubisoft Boss Praises Project Cafe, Foresees Sales Success
It's probably sad that the only thing I want to see Ubisoft port over to Project Cafe is Beyond Good & Evil HD, which isn't anything more than a simple resolution increase.
Re: Nintendo Download: 13th May 2011 (Europe)
Super Adventure Island is my personal favorite in the entire series and definately a game worth checking out if you're a fan of platformers. Can't wait to get this in the states!
Re: Chrono Trigger Does the Virtual Console Time Warp on Monday
What a glorious Monday update it'll be!
I was upset that Europe held on to FF3 for so long but even if we have to wait another few months for it, this more than makes up for it. Can't wait to load this masterpeice onto my Wii console next week!
Re: Nintendo Announces eShop Update for 6th June
The fact that it's the day before Nintendo's E3 presser definately indicates there might be a little extra something special about this update. What that could be, I have no clue but we'll find out in less than a month.
Re: SEGA Announces More Virtual Console Titles for Wii
Maybe this'll start up Sega's regular VC releases again. I was always sad that we never got Castlevania Bloodlines or Contra Hard Corps, when it appeared Sega wasn't releasing VC titles anymore.
Re: Nintendo of America Hires Scott Moffitt as New Executive VP
Meh, who cares. Just a corporate drone to pretend like he cares about what he's trying to sell you when the truth is he's just trying to pad out his resume. Nothing to see here folks!
Re: Nintendo Download: 9th May 2011 (North America)
Okay there are well over a dozen vc games in the queue and it's growing all the time, so why are we still only getting one every two weeks? All those Jeleco games I thought we here in the US would be fortunate enough to avoid have all just been rated by the ESRB which means it could be months before great games like Final Fantasy III, Super Adventure Island and Chrono Trigger show up for download, which makes these weeks of nothing all the more painful to swallow.
Re: Rumour: Xenoblade Voice Actors Out September EU Date, North American Release
I think it's a safe bet that Nintendo is going to bring this and Last Story to the states. If for any reason just because there probably isn't much else in development for the Wii due to it's impending successor.
Re: Iwata: "Kinect Has Made Little Impact on Wii Sales"
Well the people buying Kinect aren't the same people who'd buy a game like Skyward Sword, so they both might sell next year, but to different audiences. Apples and Oranges.
Re: Iwata: "We Need Big Games to Hit 3DS Sales Targets This Year"
Has Animal Crossing ever been a system seller though? Seems to me Mario is the big draw anyway, and if Animal Crossing slips into next year I don't think there are too many people out there who'll bat an eye, especially if it's like City Folk and just the same exact experience all over again.
Re: Nintendo Download: 2nd May 2011 (North America)
Lame.
