Am I the only one who finds it absurd that I have to pay again for NES games I've already bought on my Wii? What adds insult to injury is that so often these are released in lieu of new VC titles, some of which are a long time coming. Where in the hell is Kirby's Dreamland 2?
Not worth getting upset over yet. First of all, this is assuming that no wireless options are on the way, which I seriously doubt is the case. Secondly, the Wii U OS uses a total of 1gb of RAM, meaning that it will be flexible and can be updated in the future to offer more practical solutions. Obviously Nintendo is still working these things out, and the company has its hands full making sure the launch of Wii U goes smoothly. Anyone expecting Wii U to do everything perfect from day 1 clearly doesn't remember past hardware launches too well, because none have ever been perfect right from the start. Give it time, and these little issues will be ironed out accordingly.
Tekken Tag Tournament 2: All content plus bonus Nintendo related stuff
Scribblenauts Unlimited: All content plus bonus Nintendo related stuff
And how it should not be done:
Madden minus the physics
CoD minus the DLC
Unlike Wii, at least some 3rd parties and Nintendo are working together this time. It's my hope that the examples above will reflect the efforts when it comes to sales of these games. Then maybe developers and publishers will start to think of Nintendo in a better light.
@GameLord08 The reason I believe that 720p will remain a standard is because it offers more flexibility to developers, while keeping costs low, which I'm certain will be a priority in the coming generation. Despite what some zealots out there might argue, we've reached a graphical saturation point where the general public no longer discriminates based soley on graphics. They will not care about an increase in resolution, because it's not immediately appearent. Even for me, a staunch videophile, it's difficult to discern the difference between 720p and 1080p when sitting the proper 8-12 feet distance away from my 47in display. Smart developers will use that to thier advantage. Because of the nature of console gaming, as oppose to PC gaming where you are usually no more than a couple of feet from your display device, it makes perfect sense to keep the current standards for a while, at least until it becomes cost effective to change them.
@GameLord08 Thanks but I don't want to hear how Wii U isn't as powerful as rumored hardware that, at this point, is nothing more than speculation and baseless assumptions. No doubt they will be more powerful than Wii U, once they arrive, but we know next to NOTHING about when that will be. For all we know, Wii U could be sitting with the title of most powerful console for as long as three years, more than plenty of time to build a sizable fanbase. Also, don't be surpsised if those consoles too stick to a 720p standard. Yeah, I said it.
What's to stop them from releasing it on Wii U right now? If we can be forced to deal with year old ports like Batman, then Ubi should give us Origins too. No reason not to.
I've always been a fan of Nintendos efficient hardware designs. To me, it always seems neat to have a small but relatively powerful box. Heck, that was one of my favorite things about the Wii. Sure, it didn't pump out Gears of War esque shaders and effects, but playing the likes of Super Mario Galaxy and Donkey Kong Country Returns on such tiny hardware always impressed me. The fact that Wii U isn't much bigger than the Wii and manages to surpass the 360 and PS3, even if only slightly, is really quite a technological marvel in my opinion.
I'm pretty sure it, and most Nintendo published titles for that matter, will be 720p with some anti aliasing added to smooth out the picture. I don't think people realize just how taxing 1080p can be on hardware. NSMBU might seem simple in it's asthetics, but the truth is that there's quite a bit going on with the graphics, including the highly detailed fully 3D backgrounds and the fact that it runs at 60fps. We all know 1080p is possible on the Wii U, but if anyone has any experience with the PS3 or 360, they know that 720p, and below in many cases, is the norm.
The problem with Pachter is that he sees things as very black and white. "Oh, a touch screen huh? Well, that's just a consolized DS then." The truth of the matter is that the touch screen is meant to innovate how people play multiplayer games with each other and not a way of emulating the DS. It also makes accessing the system less intrusive by eliminating the need for an external screen, which may sound pointless but I feel this will actually be one of the systems biggest draws. No, Pach-man, this is not a big DS; it's a new Nintendo console that retains everything gamers want, while adding new features in the process. Why don't you go predict the sky falling else where now.
I wasn't planning on getting this game at launch because of NSMBU. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who feel the same, so it's probably for the best that this is delayed a couple months because it'll recieve more attention.
A 3D Mario game is pretty much a lock for next year and surely the EAD project that Reggie had mentioned. Looking at the 3DS, and how Mario games boosted that system into a more prosperous position, it's clear Nintendo will try and do the same thing with the Wii U. I mean, two holiday seasons in a row with a new, high profile Mario game is going to help to build a solid user base for the system, no question. As for Retro, I'm really hoping it's not a new Metroid Prime, although I certainly wouldn't complain if it was. I'd rather see them make a 2.5D Metroid title, using Super Metroid as a template for its design. I'm not sure how I'd feel about them doing a new Zelda game. I also would love to see Donkey Kong Country Returns 2, if not as this project, at some point in the systems lifespan.
The "its too light" complaint is one I've heard a lot of actually. Everything else seems a little over blown in this hands on though. First of all, I was happy to hear this controller has a rumble feature at all, and as for it being too weak, well, that's really par the course for Nintendo controllers in my experience. My guess is that this guy just gets a lot of use out of his 360 controller, and had a fit when it didn't feel identical in his hands.
Got mine! The Deluxe model too. I was at work the day of the conference, but luckilly my roomate had the day off and I had a $75 Gamestop gift card sitting on the coffee table. I texted him as soon as the price and date were announced and he took care of it for me. Solid dude! Now, we wait...
What about latency though? Nintendo has said countless times that eliminating lag within the stream to and from the game pad was a very difficult to achieve, but that they had done so. Considering that the method of data transfer that the Vita/PS3 combo uses is based on a WIFI connection, and that it's very unlikely Sony's engineers had not planned for heavy collaboration between the two systems, I doubt it can parity what Wii U does nearly as effectively. Could you imagine how much even the average delay between WIFI devices would effect a fast paced shooting game, similar to Metroid Blast? It just wouldn't be as good.
Let's temper our expectations people. Remember what happ... ahhh who am I kidding? IT'S GOING TO BE THE END ALL BE ALL OF NINTENDO CONFERENCES!!!
Seriously though, tomorrow seems like Wii Us last stand. If Nintendo can't get people excited with these conferences, there might not be much hope for the system appealing to anyone outside of the Nintendo faithful. Nintendo needs to deliver, and as consumers, we have the right to expect the goods. Don't let me down, Nintendo.
The importance of this press event cannot be over stated enough as far as I'm concerned. Nintendos unveiling of the Wii U was unprecedented; never in the companies history of console introductions have they limited the view of their future software. This was the biggest mistake made (among many others, of course) and it needs to be rectified as soon as possible. Holding on to that information any longer will only leave potential buyers, as well as even the most ardent fans, questioning whether or not they should invest in this new console.
As for the price, Nintendo needs to come out swinging on this one. I'm confident that the companies 3DS scars will remind them not to extort consumers using the Wii name alone. It may work for Apple, and will likely continue to do so, but Nintendo had to learn the hard way that the same tactics aren't as effective for everyone. My best guess is Nintendo will come out with two SKUs, in which the only difference is the color (white and black). It will be the console, game pad, Wii Remote+Nunchuk, and Nintendo Land for $300. It's important that everything needed to demonstrate "assymetrical gameplay" is included in the box since that's the whole concept behind the Wii U, and it needs to be made as simple as possible for consumers.
It seems clear what Nintendo needs to do this Thursday: They need to show off new games to relieve the concerns of core gamers, while offering a simple to understand package that's also a great value to appeal to everyone else. Nintendo knows well that they are in the hotseat right now, and that there are many criticisms needing to be addressed, and I fully expect them to do so.
It doesn't sound to me like he's saying that the Wii U isn't a next gen console specifically, but rather that the generation itself won't go into full swing untill well after its release.
For the record, Reggie doesn't hold a candle to Phillips. In everything he did for Nintendo, you could tell it was out of love. He clearly enjoyed the products his company was selling, interacting with the fans of those products, and representing the culture that had been created from it all. He wasn't just a corporate figurehead towing the company line; he was himself a dedicated fan, and it was a huge loss to Nintendo when he left in the early 90s. While I feel the software coming from the company is better than ever, the image of Nintendo has declined drastically in recent times. While Reggie is cool in his own, "executive with a fake interest in games" kind of way, he is not doing enough to make Nintendo relevant in the same way.
Meh, I don't want a new 3DS Zelda. I say have Grezzo work on Majora's Mask 3D, while the main Zelda team works on getting the Wii U game released. Skyward Sword was an incredible game, but I feel like it could have performed better, sales wise, had it been released earlier in the Wiis lifecycle. I don't want to see the same thing happen to the next console Zelda; these games deserve much better than that.
I promise all of you that the Wii U will come out on November 18th. I knew this from the beginning really. First of all, both the GCN and Wii were released on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Secondly, in America, it's best to have your product on store shelves before Black Friday, as that constitutes a fairly large portion of the entirety of Holiday sales. Lastly, historically speaking, Nintendo usually has released key products in the middle of November, both in terms of hardware and software.
So, basically, we are looking at a port of a year old AAA game that the same AAA team couldn't bother helping with because it's for a Nintendo system? Sounds about par the course for third party support on a Nintendo console. After enduring three generations of excuses, lazy efforts, and streight up snubbing from third parties, I've found it's best to just count them out of the equasion entirely. It never bothered me with Wii because, quite frankly, Nintendo software covers the gamut of most genres and they release these games in a timely enough fashion to coincide with the amount of free time I have to play games. They want to turn thier nose up at Nintendo, then I say we all just turn our nose up at them. Nintendo games have always been the best out there anyhow.
December isn't that bad and, from what I hear, mirrors the original Wii launch in that territory. As an American, I fully expect it to be the same situation in the United States too, which would be the Sunday before Black Friday. All in all, this isn't really news and should've been expected of the consoles release. Historically that's always been the case, although the situation has technically improved in Europe over the past few generations, even considering this "delay."
If I didn't already have the abridged Club Nintendo OST, I would probably get this, but I feel like all my favorite music was there to begin with. Also, $60 could by a new game instead.
I honestly don't mind the delays. My priority this year is Wii U with NSMBU, and I only have so much money to go around. Paper Mario has been my most anticipated game sinse the 3DS was first shown, so I really don't feel like I have anything to complain about. Also, as Miyamoto once said, a bad game is bad forever, but a delayed game can eventually become good. Not an exact quote, but that's the jist of what he was trying to express.
That screenshot reminds me of how amazing Rogue Leader looked in its day. Even still, if someone had told me that was a low res shot of a Wii U game, I'd believe them. It's sad to think that Factor 5, who had such a long relationship with Nintendo, went on to make Lair on the PS3, which ultimately led to the developers demise. Even more sad is that thier technical prowess and the level of devotion to understanding the hardware for which they made software was unique among the development community. They did more with the N64 than most thought was possible, and for that, I will always consider them an important part of Nintendo history.
I know Sonic is making an appearance, but if Mario isn't a fairly prominant cameo it would be a huge oversight in my opinion. I mean Mario is easilly the most recognized character in video games. Clearly Wreck-it-Ralph and Fix-it-Felix are heavilly inspired by Donkey Kong and Mario respectively, but that doesn't mean they can't exist in the same universe, especially if Bowser is in there. Can't wait to see this movie, though.
If the actual cases are blue, which looks to be the case (sorry ), this will easilly stand apart from Wii software on the shelves. Certainly this was intended seeing as 3DS packaging caused some confusion. Hopefully the Wii U cases are also thinner like the 3DS ones, as I kind of like that.
Oh, you know perfectly well that's not the reason! The game sold like crap on Wii, so you're seeing if your sequel will fair better on competing systems and that's all there is to it.
The girl in the video IS talented (and cute too), but I always feel uncomfortable watching things like this. It's like, even though I know that I'm kind of a nerd and really shouldn't be saying anything about it, I can detect when something has breached the line between quirky and total geekdom. Yeah, I said it! Videos where people dress up as elves while playing video game music on a violin to awkward choreography is TOO nerdy for me!
I actually like to collect cards. I have full sets of the Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii trading cards Enterplay has sold, but these cards are too hard to get to even bother. I managed to get a total of 14 of them without spending any money, but I refuse to drive all over creation, or shell out rediculous amounts of cash on anymore.
It's well past the time for Nintendo fans to just accept that western developers aren't going to put much effort into development on Nintendo consoles. The stigma that Nintendo has gathered for the past three generations, coupled with the fear that these publishers have about competing with Nintendo's first party games on the same system, only perpetuate further neglect from 3rd parties.
It's really easy to blame these publishers and label their decisions as short sighted, but the fact of the matter is that there really are risks inherent in facing Nintendo's juggernaught of quality software. As game production costs increased over the years, the risks have only become that much greater. Despite the passion exhibited by forum goers like us, most consumers don't buy more than a handful of games each year, if that. With that in mind, Nintendo's competetors look a lot more lucrative to third parties, as their in house software is much fewer and far between.
You can argue it's Nintendo's online structure or the companies family friendly image that keeps publishers at bay till the cows come home, but I really do believe that its mostly a David hiding from Goliath scenerio.
Also, sic is merely a gramerical symbol indicating an error within a quote. It's not derogitory towards Nintendo, if that's what you were thinking.
This is very minor, but it always annoys me when 16:9 enhanced Wii games don't format the icons to the proper aspect ratio to match. Everything in the HUD in this game looks stretched and wonky as heck. Shouldn't matter to us though, as we'll likely get the Wii U version anyway. Hopefully we'll get a peek at it soon.
The design of the pro controller being so close to that of the Xbox 360 pad pretty much says it all. Clearly they've looked at what competitors have done when creating it, and the specs of the Wii U also seem to confirm that they are more serious about drawing in those developers. Whether they'll be able to or not remains to be seen, however.
My only hope is that working with Namco/Bandai will speed up the development process. I have high hopes that we will catch our first glimpse of these games early next year, with a release either late 2013 or early 2014 for both systems.
Wow, this came out of nowhere. I like the new look of the system, but I would've preferred it stayed around the same size. I don't care much about the lack of a second built in circle pad. I may actually get one of these though, but not until white, or another color I like, is released.
There really isn't a whole lot on Gamecube I'd want that wasn't already ported to Wii. Metroid Prime Trilogy covers those games, Pikman 1 and 2 have both found their way in all territories as well as various other titles. Notable exceptions would be Super Smash Bros Melee, Super Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker. All I'd really like to see in HD, not as remakes, but as enhanced ports via Virtual Console. Considering the smaller line up of worthwhile games on the Cube, this seems the likely option to me.
What's to be dissappointed over? A 2D Mario, however derivative it may be, at launch is way better than no Mario, I say. In spite of what the critics say, having a revolutionary new 3D Mario ready when the system is released was never a likely thing to happen. Those games take time, and we all know they're working on one, so why don't we just enjoy this undoubtably fun game in the mean time?
I think the argument about this series not innovating enough is completely valid. Growing up, seeing Mario change over the years was always exciting to see, and even now, with games like Galaxy and 3D Land, we're still seeing it. That's what I feel the critics of the NSMB games don't realize however; these games are strictly made for the purpose of catering to the nostalgia created by the original Super Mario Bros. and not meant as true successors in the series. That's why the name never changes, why there's always flagpoles at the end of the levels, and why the art style is fairly plain. It's meant to maintain the simplicity of the series roots.
That being said, I see NSMB games as something I can always count on to bring a smile to my face. Sometimes games don't need to push hardware or offer new ways of playing to be fun. There's a good reason these games sell as well as they do, and irate gamers can't argue with that kind of success. These games are plain fun, and that really should be enough for any type of player.
On another note, I feel this is a perfect launch title for aging gamers like myself. NES, and subsequently, Super Mario Bros., are pretty much my earliest memories of playing video games, and the very idea that I'll be taking home classic 2D Mario gameplay on day 1 has me absolutely giddy.
As a Castlevania fan, I'm interested in Mercury Steam's take on these classic characters, but at the same time, I really didn't like Lords of Shadow all that much because it threw out a lot of Castlevania trademarks. Already I can see this game will have a more gothic setting, which was one of the complaints I had with LoS, so it seems promising. I'm going to try, however, not to go into this game expecting the same grandure of IGA's classic entries into the series, because I know they won't do those games justice at all, but instead appriciate Mirror of Fate for what makes it unique. Even with my stance on LoS, I still have great respect for anyone who admires Super Castlevania IV as much as Mercury Steam does. Certainly not a bad source of inspiration at all as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo to Launch Wii U on 18th November in North America
I promise all of you that the Wii U will come out on November 18th. I knew this from the beginning really. First of all, both the GCN and Wii were released on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Secondly, in America, it's best to have your product on store shelves before Black Friday, as that constitutes a fairly large portion of the entirety of Holiday sales. Lastly, historically speaking, Nintendo usually has released key products in the middle of November, both in terms of hardware and software.
Re: Rookie Developer Shepherding Mass Effect 3 Onto Wii U
Re: Rumour: Wii U European Launch Could be Delayed
December isn't that bad and, from what I hear, mirrors the original Wii launch in that territory. As an American, I fully expect it to be the same situation in the United States too, which would be the Sunday before Black Friday. All in all, this isn't really news and should've been expected of the consoles release. Historically that's always been the case, although the situation has technically improved in Europe over the past few generations, even considering this "delay."
Re: Kid Icarus: Uprising Complete Soundtrack Blasting Into Japan
If I didn't already have the abridged Club Nintendo OST, I would probably get this, but I feel like all my favorite music was there to begin with. Also, $60 could by a new game instead.
Re: Nintendo Confirms Its Holiday Hits in North America
I honestly don't mind the delays. My priority this year is Wii U with NSMBU, and I only have so much money to go around. Paper Mario has been my most anticipated game sinse the 3DS was first shown, so I really don't feel like I have anything to complain about. Also, as Miyamoto once said, a bad game is bad forever, but a delayed game can eventually become good. Not an exact quote, but that's the jist of what he was trying to express.
Re: Albert Chen - Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II Aimed for "Fantasy Fulfilment"
That screenshot reminds me of how amazing Rogue Leader looked in its day. Even still, if someone had told me that was a low res shot of a Wii U game, I'd believe them. It's sad to think that Factor 5, who had such a long relationship with Nintendo, went on to make Lair on the PS3, which ultimately led to the developers demise. Even more sad is that thier technical prowess and the level of devotion to understanding the hardware for which they made software was unique among the development community. They did more with the N64 than most thought was possible, and for that, I will always consider them an important part of Nintendo history.
Re: Wreck-It Ralph Creators On Working With Nintendo And Sega Characters
I know Sonic is making an appearance, but if Mario isn't a fairly prominant cameo it would be a huge oversight in my opinion. I mean Mario is easilly the most recognized character in video games. Clearly Wreck-it-Ralph and Fix-it-Felix are heavilly inspired by Donkey Kong and Mario respectively, but that doesn't mean they can't exist in the same universe, especially if Bowser is in there. Can't wait to see this movie, though.
Re: Wii U Box Art Breaks Cover
If the actual cases are blue, which looks to be the case (sorry ), this will easilly stand apart from Wii software on the shelves. Certainly this was intended seeing as 3DS packaging caused some confusion. Hopefully the Wii U cases are also thinner like the 3DS ones, as I kind of like that.
Re: This is Why New Little King's Story Isn't on Wii
Oh, you know perfectly well that's not the reason! The game sold like crap on Wii, so you're seeing if your sequel will fair better on competing systems and that's all there is to it.
Re: The Legend of Zelda Music Makes Olympics Appearance
The girl in the video IS talented (and cute too), but I always feel uncomfortable watching things like this. It's like, even though I know that I'm kind of a nerd and really shouldn't be saying anything about it, I can detect when something has breached the line between quirky and total geekdom. Yeah, I said it! Videos where people dress up as elves while playing video game music on a violin to awkward choreography is TOO nerdy for me!
Re: Kid Icarus: Uprising Series 2 AR Cards Flying Into North America
I actually like to collect cards. I have full sets of the Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii trading cards Enterplay has sold, but these cards are too hard to get to even bother. I managed to get a total of 14 of them without spending any money, but I refuse to drive all over creation, or shell out rediculous amounts of cash on anymore.
Re: Nintendo Download: 2nd August 2012 (North America)
Last time I checked, Summer lasts more than four weeks...
Re: Crysis 3 Isn't Coming to Wii U
Re: Nintendo Talks Dragon Quest X in Latest Direct Broadcast
This is very minor, but it always annoys me when 16:9 enhanced Wii games don't format the icons to the proper aspect ratio to match. Everything in the HUD in this game looks stretched and wonky as heck. Shouldn't matter to us though, as we'll likely get the Wii U version anyway. Hopefully we'll get a peek at it soon.
Re: Katsuya Eguchi: Wii U Design Philosophy is For Everyday Life
The design of the pro controller being so close to that of the Xbox 360 pad pretty much says it all. Clearly they've looked at what competitors have done when creating it, and the specs of the Wii U also seem to confirm that they are more serious about drawing in those developers. Whether they'll be able to or not remains to be seen, however.
Re: No Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 for Wii U
No surprise there, really. I fully expect this to be the situation for most multiplatform games in the future.
Re: Super Smash Bros. 3DS and Wii U Powers Up with Namco
My only hope is that working with Namco/Bandai will speed up the development process. I have high hopes that we will catch our first glimpse of these games early next year, with a release either late 2013 or early 2014 for both systems.
Re: Bigger Nintendo 3DS Console Revealed
Wow, this came out of nowhere. I like the new look of the system, but I would've preferred it stayed around the same size. I don't care much about the lack of a second built in circle pad. I may actually get one of these though, but not until white, or another color I like, is released.
Re: 3DS Virtual Console Gets Big Push in North America
Releasing games at a steady pace > holding back for one robust month
Re: Feature: The Future of GameCube on Wii U
There really isn't a whole lot on Gamecube I'd want that wasn't already ported to Wii. Metroid Prime Trilogy covers those games, Pikman 1 and 2 have both found their way in all territories as well as various other titles. Notable exceptions would be Super Smash Bros Melee, Super Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker. All I'd really like to see in HD, not as remakes, but as enhanced ports via Virtual Console. Considering the smaller line up of worthwhile games on the Cube, this seems the likely option to me.
Re: First Impressions: New Super Mario Bros. U
Re: New Super Mario Bros. U is 'Accessible and Intuitive'
Re: Talking Point: Wii U Bundles Need to Suit Us All
Nintendo should make two bundles:
One including a white Wii U, Gamepad, Wii Remote and Nunchuk and Nintendo Land for $300
The other being a black Wii U, Gamepad, Pro Controller and New Super Mario Bros. U for $300.
Both games would of course be sold seperately for those who want a particular color system and the opposite game.
Re: Mercury Steam Talks Up 3DS for Castlevania: Mirror of Fate
