Re: Poll: So, How Would You Rate Nintendo's 2021?

Voted 7/10 and that mostly thanks to Metroid Dread, which proved to be much better than expected.

The first half of the year was quite barren for me. The first 1st-party game I bought this year was Skyward Sword HD in summer!

Re: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 Gameplay Concepts Revealed In Nintendo Patents

People wondering how such patents are possible don't know a one important distinction: game ideas/mechanics are not patentable as w hole but specific solutions to achieve them are.
For example, you can have a system similar in your end-user experience as the Nemesis system in Shadow of Mordor, but it cannot work under the hood the same way.
Did you know natural movement from Dying Light is patented? It didn't stop other games from having systems for grapping ledges, simply these systems work differently.

Patents are needed to minimize the risk and encourage companies in investing in research & development.

Re: Talking Point: Have You Missed E3 This Year?

I miss the E3 greatly. The prospect of more events but smaller was tempting but the reality is disappointing. Many devs either couldn't or didn't want to put so much effort into those events as they usually put into E3. Also, there were too many events and good games were spread thinly. At the end of the day, only the PS5 games reveal was great, everything was mediocre at best.

Also, where is Nintendo?

Obviously I won't download Zelda and buy a box instead. I already downloaded Jet Kave (a pretty, fun platformer) and think of donloading Goose Game (although I heard the quests are pretty repetitive despite great premise).

Re: Review: Jet Kave Adventure - A 2.5D Platformer That Doesn't Reinvent The Wheel, More's The Pity

OK, so after playing all evening yesterday, I have much better impressions from the game than the reviewer.

First of all, it took me around 2,5 hours to get to World 3 so I doubt I will finish it before hour 3 is up.

Apart from that, what's to love?

  • the controls are super tight and the game runs smooth (although 30 fps) so the very core of jumping, hovering and dashing is pure fun
  • the game is a looker, one of the prettiest 3D graphics in indie games at this price point
  • every level introduces something new, and some obstacles are really creative (bamboo sliding!, opening flowers to jump on them)
  • while the base game is on the easy side, extra challenges are punishing (in the good sense)
  • looking for the gold statues is fun because they are cleverly hidden
  • chase sequences are intense and I love paragliding - mainly it's difficult but fair (controls are near perfect, remember, in my opinion)
  • I don't agree about the story. For a 2.5D platformer that doesn't try to be "deep" or "artsy", the story is surprisingly fleshed out and delivered in an interesting way (apart from the narrator, all dialogues are pictograms).

What's meh?

  • Bosses, although have interesting attack schemes, are ugly.
  • Combat isn't deep, but I have doubts it was supposed to be. Enemies are more like another platforming obstacles
  • Musical segments are fun but not as much fun as in Rayman Legends
  • Some upgrades seem much more useful than others

Dunno, if I were to give a score, so far it's a solid 8 (after around half of the game). It's a fun, fast and colorful platformer. Indeed it doesn't reinvent the genre it's really well-made and fills the lack of a new DKC pretty nicely.

PS. The sidekick seems to find shells for you, apparently.
