I’m overall very hyped for Sonic Frontiers, especially after all this new information.
Confirmed leaks have also said the linear levels are Sonic Generations & Sonic Unleashed quality, hopefully that statement holds up.
Apart from that, my only hope at the moment is for Sega to add the Sonic Frontiers Prologue into the actual game so we have the full story without needing internet access.
IGN’s hands on preview really came through with the details:
-Open world + linear levels with time attacks & red rings.
-Enemies drop experience points.
-Skill tree to unlock & upgrade abilities.
-Dodge & parry moves.
-Open World time challenges.
-Chaos Emeralds return for the story.
-Tails & Amy are in the game.
-New world was accessed through a portal.
-Completing puzzles unlocks more map.
-AI companion helps Sonic.
-Game has at least some momentum (“ Didn’t have enough momentum to attack the boss’s head”).
-IGN’s demo was 4 hours long! (Full game must be at least 12?).
-The defence squad was right, this is in fact an early build of the darn game.
Sonic Central also confirmed:
-Prologue animation staring Knuckles & the Master Emerald.
—--Knuckles is actually doing his job.
-Multiple Overworld bosses.
-Loop-to-loops at least somewhat return.
(Edit: Tails Channel has a way better write up of the information)
I think we’ll see
-Proper Sonic Frontiers trailer
-Sonic Origins changes & new features trailer
-Sonic Prime trailer
-Sonic mobile updates
-Sonic 06 Xbox backwards compatibility
What I wish they would also show:
-Modern releases of Sonic Generations, Unleashed, Adventure, Adventure 2, Advance 1-3, & 06. For Nintendo Switch portability.
@chancooluk Knuckles theme in Sonic Origins is in fact from the original games, it’s just from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles and not Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
I think it looks like a fun and intriguing world to run through and explore, I think the demo they showed was meant to be devoid of enemy’s so they could focus on exploration, a combat demo is probably coming soon. These open world islands are also most likely going to house normal modern boost stages.
@RubyCarbuncle I’m not concerned, they probably just don’t wanna announce anything big too far out from release, like Sonic Origins. If they had announced story and gameplay details last year they could end up being wrong as a lot can change in a year.
The only thing they did wrong imo was announce the darn thing way too early, they should’ve skipped Sonic Central, then kept everything else the same as The Game Awards trailer was a way better teaser.
@Alpha008
Luckily Sega isn’t actually doing much remastering as Sonic Origins is using the already completed Whitehead versions of 1, 2, & CD with slight changes. As I’ve said before, Sega is basically just combining 4 profession fan remasters (plus a new blusphere game) with new animated cutscenes, a music player, and a museum, then creating mirror mode, boss rush mode, and mission mode by slightly editing parts of each game.
I’m sure the final product will be great, definitely way better then Sonic Genesis on GBA.
@MeloMan
There’s not really any reasons to worry, since the other 3 games are the already made Whitehead versions. So that leaves Sega to make animated cutscenes, a music player, a museum, then missions, boss rush & mirror mode, which will use mechanics from the 4 externally remastered games.
@Serpenterror
Well Sega working on a Sonic game doesn’t equal Sonic Team. Sonic Team is on Sonic Frontiers, so Sega probably got a different team for Sonic Origins. Either way, Sonic Origins is still just a collection including 3 already made projects, 1 new externally made project, and a few new modes based on the 4 projects included, so it doesn’t need too many people from Sega working on it anayway.
Except it’s not really “purely Sega Developed”. Sonic 1, 2, & CD were already made by Christian Whitehead & Sonic 3 is being made by Headcanon, leaving the animated cutscenes, missions, music player and museum to be done by Sega.
Remember Sonic Origins gameplay wasn’t shown until 2 months before release, I think they’re just waiting until Sonic Frontiers is closer to being finished so the gameplay looks like the final product.
I wanted it digital on Nintendo Switch anyway. Just like Sonic Mania, I want to be able to play Sonic Origins whenever I want without swapping game cards & will later buy a physical edition for my collection to keep mint.
I do wonder what a Sonic Origins Plus upgrade would look like.
There’s the obvious “we’re adding more characters”, but I wonder what new level content they could add. Or if they would remaster/remake Knuckles’s Chaotix or the 8-bit games, since they would need more work to seem modern.
@KoiTenchi
I agree that having 4 or more editions is dumb, especially when different versions include different things, however Sonic Origins only 2 different editions, unlike most Ubisoft games.
The chart shows (from left to right):
-Basic Digital, with the game only.
-Pre-order bonus, with 2 early unlocks and 1 exclusive border for classic mode.
-DLC, with 11 hard missions, 10 borders for classic, animated characters added to menu’s, full view of the 4 islands.
-DLC, with music from games not in the collection.
-Digital Deluxe Edition, with game and all DLC except the 1 pre-order exclusive border.
@WaveBoy One of my only criticism’s of Sonic 2 is the final zone having enemy’s off screen that you can’t see, but they can see you, so even though I’ve played the full game twice, I can’t wait for this version. My only other criticism is the special stages and final boss that you need to do ringless, but the special stages can now be restarted with collected coins, and the infinite lives lets you learn the pattern of the final boss without without several game overs.
Sonic 1 has so many issues in my opinion, including a lot of things hurting you from off screen, several times per stage.
Sonic 3 was already perfect to most people, so seeing more of a stage at once will be a bonus for them, but could also be a big help for the people who don’t love it and then make them love it too.
Let me just say, having a trailer & website that say digital only release for June 23rd and then having a physical release on the 23rd as well, is not only highly immoral, but is probably illegal. Many people would see it as a bad, anti consumer practice and not buy the game all, and Sega would know that people would act like that.
As for Katie, as said previously, she is a full employee of Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog branch/pillar, and manages a lot of marketing details and events (such as the Sonic Synthony). She would not say anything about Sonic before confirming it with her bosses, she would probably get fired for making a wrong statement. Her “no physical planned at this time” statement IS from Sega, and again, I doubt Sega would lie about the digital only 23rd release and “no physical planned” statement, cause it’s probably illegal, and definitely worthy to be sued.
Don’t get me wrong, I definitely believe that the very top bosses of Sega are planning a physical release, in 2023 after announcing an expansion so they can give it a separate name (mania - mania plus) to the original release, to make their statement technically more true. Most (if not all) company’s plan things months in advance, so for their statement to seem true they’ll need to wait at least 6 months before announcing a physical version, let alone releasing it. when it’s announced they’ll say something like “Sonic Origins has sold so well that we’ve got some more content coming to the game. This new content will also be packaged in this new physical edition”.
I’m sorry, but I can’t personally believe that Sega confirmed that Sonic Origins was getting a physical copy on the 23rd to a single game store and that somebody has a physical preorder at said store, on word alone. Whereas Katie’s statement is available for the public to see and would have been confirmed with her bosses at Sega before she posted it. Sega wouldn’t say one thing to the Sonic social media manager (important employee WITHIN Sega) and another thing to a single store (not part of Sega)….
Everything that needs to be said as been said, unless more evidence comes to light. May this please be the end for the time being.
@Nintendofanatic94
There’s definitely no physical release, Katie from the Sonic social media team confirmed they have no plans. Some stores do however sell digital games, so that could be why.
@Zulzar
Sonic Origins isn’t a repackage of Mega Genesis Drive games, it’s an anniversary collection with all 4/5 classic games fully remastered in high definition widescreen. They can be played as singular experiences, as one big game with full cutscenes in story mode, or as originally intended in 4:3 with lives (which are also remastered versions as pointed out by a few people).
This collection with also include: a cut level from Sonic 2, both Sonic CD ost’s, no mystic cave death pit, a boss rush for each game, blue spheres bonus game, spin dash in 1 & cd, drop dash, tails with flight in every game, knuckles in 1 & 2, online leaderboards, time trials, ranked missions, mirror mode for each game, full music player, coins to spend on retrying special stages and in a museum that will include brand new content.
@samuelvictor I was always gonna buy Sonic Origins digitally on Nintendo Switch to always be able to just open it up for a bit after playing bigger games, so having new content to come back to each time will be epic.
@samuelvictor
Coins can also be used to retry special stages. Each game’s mirror mode is unlocked after completing it normally. The museum is also said to include never before seen content.
@samuelvictor
The borders are also just for 4:3 classic mode that play’s exactly like the version that everybody already owns, I really don’t care for them as I will be exclusively playing anniversary mode.
America has no physical edition announced? Even Australia has a physical edition announced, and we”re usually the ones who miss out on these things, although it’s $89aus in our stores and ordering a European copy was only $60aus.
A link to the Japanese website, it actually has a proper English language option. It confirms more features, such as the museum included brand new never seen before content. ://asia.sega.com/SonicOrigins/en/mode/
Apparently the Japanese website says “in anniversary mode, you can spend the coins to retry special stages”, I’ll gladly except this over save states since you have to now play the game and earn the right to keep retrying.
@samuelvictor
I’m sure the Switch version is still coming on the same day, it would have no reason to take longer, and is still listed in the trailer along with the other consoles, without a note about the release being different.
Great note about Nintendo being very strict, they may have disliked the coming soon being plastered over it, but now people may be asking them and Sega if it’s even still coming…
Also it’s an $8 different between versions here in Australia, still not outrageous in my opponion.
Sega has done a better, and more consumer friendly job then both Nintendo & Ubisoft have done, so why is Sega in such a big controversy? Just cause they made a not so good graph, and NO ONE IS READING IT PROPERLY.
Sonic Origins is a proper anniversary collection with 4 full remasters, new features, new cutscenes, music player (with optional add ons), and a museum, all for $40us, with no “delete” date”, plus a $5us extra deluxe edition (and a graph that fans have made better versions of).
