This seems to be a common occurance lately. Hype building up for a new game from one of the biggest developers in the world and then we find out it's just another iOS game. From now on I'm automatically going to assume any teaser site is actually for some underwhelming iOS game.
I think the game lineup is actually really good, probably one of the best since N64, but I do think the problem lies in the prices. If I remember correctly, Wii games retailed at $50 on average, or sometimes less. Wii U games are cranked up to $60 at a seemingly standard price point. There have been a few drops already with Just Dance 4 and Sonic & All-Stars Transformed only being $30-$40 respectively, but I did see Mass Effect 3 go as high as $80 at my local Wal-Mart, which is just insane for a game that has already been out for awhile on other platforms. Batman: Arkham City is $20 higher than on other platforms, even if it does have some exclusive content it's still hard to justify that extra cash for an "older" game. It will be interesting to see how long these high prices will last with all of these new platforms and services coming out offering them as such reasonably low prices.
That's cool and everything, but what about finishing releasing them on the Wii Virtual Console? I was hoping to complete the collection, and you know... The Wii is a console, not a handheld, so it kind of makes more sense considering these are console games.
That's a bad excuse. They have the option to enable the Pro controller for traditional gameplay, not to mention the GamePad is basically a 360/PS3 controller just with a screen. What about Mass Effect 3? Or Assassin's Creed 3? Batman? Those were all designed for the other systems and re-released just fine on the Wii U. This is just an excuse because they don't want to bother porting it over to a Nintendo system. Nintendo has gone out of their way to cater to the 3rd parties and yet they still don't bring their games over. Um, Hello?!
For some reason I'm not that excited about a new Super Smash Bros. game. I don't mean to sound negative, but it just seems like the series hit its peak with Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which some people didn't even find to be as good as Melee (it's arguable Melee was the prime of the series.) So to me, it seems the Super Smash Bros. series has run its course, combine that with the fact that Namco is co-developing the game with HAL/Nintendo and that the game is going to be stretched over Wii U AND Nintendo 3DS... Well it just seems to me that they're making these new games completely out of obligation, as a crowd pleaser. Time will tell, however, but at this point I feel that I can definitely wait.
Um, hell yes. I'd go out and buy that ASAP. I've put a ton of hours into Mass Effect 3 already. I'm a lot more impressed than I thought I would be, seeing that it's my most played Wii U game so far, I'd love to play through the other two games on the system. (Instead of having my bulky white Xbox 360 Arcade hooked up looking like an eyesore in my living room.)
Why is it that every time this guy says something bad about Nintendo, that it gets reported as news!? He must be basking in all the attention. So what does he do when he gets bored, and feels "irrelevant"? He just says "Nintendo sucks" and that gets hundreds of people talking about him. How many times is this going to happen before people finally realize how UNIMPORTANT Pachter is.
The design slightly reminds me of the Famicom for some reason, probably because of the red. I'll definitely be getting this, mainly for the red Wii Remote and Nunchuck that you can't buy in stores, which would cost almost $80 anyway only with this I get a unique Nintendo system to add to the collection. For the price, it seems like a win-win, even if it doesn't have online.
That was pretty neat, really cool of Nintendo to do that, reminds us that they are people just like anyone else. I found it hilarious that the one girl took time to actually complain to Reggie about Project X Zone. She's probably one of the 5 members of Operation Rainfall left.
Oh man, that's so typically Nintendo. "No you cannot do this... But it might come later." With absolutely no explanation why. Damn, this was one of the features I was hoping for most, playing VC games on the GamePad. Can you at least just use the buttons? Can you use the Pro Controller? Oh, please don't tell me I have to use the Classic Controller again...
Not this again... Do we really expect to get excited over a new Sonic game after being disappointed the last 100 times? The word of a new Sonic game coming out shouldn't be a surprise any more.
As long as it's fast enough where quickly looking up a game guide or something doesn't become a chore. I don't mind the 3DS browser, but the low resolution of the screens require a lot of zooming, and it doesn't seem to be quite fast enough to keep up with me, so it feels rather clunky for the most part. If the Wii U browser doesn't suffer from any clunkiness then I'll most definitely be using it to look up information about the game I'm playing, or to check Nintendo Life of course.
Probably routine service, there's no reason to get excited over this. I'm sure Nintendo would announce via Nintendo Direct if they were going to implement an account based infrastructure which would require users to sign up and accept a user agreement and whatnot. That's not something that they would just "sneak" in. I'm kind of surprised that Nintendo Life would actually think that, to be honest.
The "How U Will Play Next" segment gives it a baddonkey edge. I like that seems they're making it clear that "this is the new Wii, and we're not f***ing around."
Paying real money for in-game currency. Isn't that something people have been illegally doing with MMO's for years?
Oh right, this is the publisher doing it, so now it's okay? Seriously, this is the worst type of DLC in my opinion. Giving players who pay money an advantage kind of defeats the whole purpose of it being a game.
Not surprised even the slightest. It was a decent dungeon crawler, but not even close to distinct enough for it to become noticed, never mind being a hit. Also, this came out around the time of Diablo III didn't it? That might have a bit to do with it.
I think the way they're doing it with New Super Mario Bros. 2 is perfect. They gave us the core game just as we'd expect, but are offering extras for those who want it. It's icing on the cake, really. If they keep offering DLC in that manner, I'd be more than happy to dish out the extra coinage, for the extras.
Ugh. This is why smartphones will lead to a video game market crash. It's the Atari 2600 days all over again, and if this is what people want instead of paying for an actual Mario game, then I'm afraid to see where industry will go in a few years.
I recently got an Android phone, considering "mobile" is apparently a platform now, and I'm just hating it. The complete and utter lack of quality control is just... atrocious. Games like this, Weed Farmer, Roll-a-joint, and other such embarrassing titles, I can't believe mobile is even considered in the same realm as mainstream gaming.
That Muscle March trailer was probably the greatest game trailer I've ever seen and probably ever will see.
I agree with Morgan on the Wii Remote thing, only just realizing it somewhat recently while playing Final Fantasy on Virtual Console, it's like playing with a perfectly modern, wireless, compact NES controller.
If there was any time I can recall being my greatest moment, maybe not quirky, was when I had a projector set-up to get the "big screen" Wii Sports experience, but my brother and I mainly used it to play Streets of Rage on while drinking beer. Good times.
I'm so surprised that anyone even makes a big deal about file sizes. With SD card and external HDD solutions so affordable nowadays, there shouldn't be any reason to worry so much about file size. I have several 2GB SD cards laying around and a 1TB external HDD not being used, I'm sure I'm not the only one either.
There is a reason I now exclusively visit Nintendo Life, and have for the past two years now, it's because I trust you guys. I completely left IGN behind, as I felt that on many occasions their "journalism" had been bought, among other things. As long as Nintendo Life keeps doing what they're doing, it will be my #1 site.
Every time he uses the word "fanboy" he loses all credibility. Stop being such a jaded a**hole Pachter, grow up.
As for his point, I agree to an extent. I think he's forgetting the people who just want the latest and greatest tech toy, there will be a few hundred thousand of those as well. It's clear that Pachter has a grudge against Nintendo fans simply because he gets scorned by the loud mouth, immature ones all the time. I think he needs to learn to stop generalizing Nintendo fans.
I've honestly never really thought of this subject, I always assumed most of the assembly was done by automated machines. After learning about it though, I must say I'd rather pay a higher price to have Nintendo make their products at their own plants like they used to. Ever since I started having problems with the Wii, DS Lite, and even my 3DS, I've felt that Nintendo should go back to manufacturing their own products. This does actually impact my decision on buying the Wii U, if I were looking for just any console to buy, this would probably make me decide not to, but because it's Nintendo I feel that I can't not have the next Nintendo system. I feel guilty admitting that, but I am also admitting that I would gladly pay a higher price to see this stop.
$962,000? So uh.. what do I have to do to get started on pir... JOKING! But seriously, that's a lot of money basically stolen from people who rightfully deserved it. It's good to see this guy get served some cold hard justice, if I were making games and someone else was making profit off of my creative works, I'd want them severely punished. Good job Nintendo and.. UKIE!
No, this is the real successor. I don't think Nintendo would invest in launching a whole new console, trying to get all of the third-parties on board and everything, just to come out with a new one in three years. Granted this did happen with the Game Boy Advance, so it wouldn't be completely unheard of. Honestly though, in my opinion, I think MCV here is just formulating a believable theory based on the fact that Wii U isn't going to be on-par graphically with the next PlayStation and Xbox, but I seriously don't think Nintendo is considering battling it out with Microsoft and Sony in the horsepower race with a new console in three years.
Great interview. The game looks interesting, but I hope the impressive art style wasn't the main focus, the trailer didn't do much to emphasize gameplay aside from flying around. Will definitely keep an eye on this one though.
@Jaco I agree, it was hard to tell where you could or couldn't fly, maybe this should have been a 3DS game where the stereoscopic display could help differentiate foreground and background.
Finally! I called this a few years back. I'm glad to see it's finally happening, social games have been nothing but a shameless cash grab, and it's good to see people reacting accordingly by not supporting it, even if it has taken awhile. The universe tends to unfold as it should.
I LoL'd, so that's something. I love how crazy girls get over pretty well nothing, just some kid. It's pure comedy. The best part was that 40 year old lady, coooougar alert.
Then again I'd probably cry like a 12 year old girl if Miyamoto walked in the room right now.
Pokemon are monsters, they're just used as a game mechanic. Awesome interview, Charles Martinet seems like a very down to earth, really great guy. That video clip was actually kind of mind blowing... Nintendo Life and "It's a me, Mario!" in the same sentence, said by Mario himself. Just think about that for a minute, really makes me happy to be a Nintendo Life reader that's for sure.
