I'm willing to bet Sonic is already more renown than Hello Kitty. Hello Kitty is only really popular with little girls where EVERYONE knows who Sonic the Hedgehog is, pretty much.
Multimedia options have always been a sneaky (or brilliant) way to sell consoles to people who aren't interested in video games. So from a gamer's standpoint, I could care less if I ever see movies or television or music videos etc. on my game systems. I find it oftentimes too expensive or that physical media wears them out too fast. But for consumers who don't care about games, I don't think it would hurt to try and appeal to them.
I'd only be interested in movies and TV on 3DS if it were affordable and convenient. I don't want to pay top dollar for a digital copy of a movie that I'm only going to watch on my handheld in standard definition.
A good example of an inconvenient service is Zune on Xbox 360. You can only rent certain movies or only buy certain ones, or buy and rent others. It's just a disaster and the prices are all over the place. As long as Nintendo doesn't do something like Zune I'd be fine with it.
Also, if Nintendo does sell out and start offering multimedia on their systems, for the love of all things saken please don't put Ads!
They could have at least changed up the music. Obviously I'll still be getting the game regardless of it being extremely similar to the last 2 NSMB games, but still some changes aside from power ups and level design would be nice if this and the Wii U game are going to be the 2D Mario games to last for the next generation. (Although I'd easily bet on more)
Pachter is so unprofessional. What kind of adult, not to mention "industry professional" goes around calling people Fanboys. That's stuff teenagers and kids call each other. This guy consistently proves to us how much of an absolute idiot he really is. Michael Pachter; get a new job.
This position will eventually just be a stepping stone for James Newton as he climbs to the rank of President of NOE. And then someday he will rule the world.
Poor #9, stuck in the confines of their 3DS web browser, so desperately looking for friends. I genuinely feel sorry for them, I wonder how they'll feel once they realize you can't communicate with anyone through the 3DS Friend List...
I don't use 3D anymore because it makes me nauseous, but I do think it makes games look better and gives that extra sense of immersion there's no doubt about that. I just wish it was more comfortable on the eyes and didn't go all wonky when you moved it around, perhaps the option for glasses 3D might have solved that? I don't know.
Is it just me or are NES games on 3DS, or any handheld for that matter, kind of a bad idea? I mean the fact that there's no multiplayer sort of helps prove that. I suppose it depends on whether or not multiplayer is a priority for some.
It's a good thing NA is getting the adaptor included, but wow Nintendo I'm really surprised they're making this decision in PAL regions. I thought it was bad that Sony stopped including USB data cables with PSP's back in the day but this is just ridiculous. It would be different if the XL used triple A batteries or something but the damn thing requires an AC adaptor to even be USED. I thought Nintendo was more conscientious of their consumers, guess I was wrong.
The rate of evolution of graphics is definitely slowing down. If you look at 6 or 7 years ago, last generation consoles were absolutely paling in comparison to some of the more ambitious PC titles at this point in their life span. Fast forward to the present and you'll see that PC titles still have yet to completely overshadow console games, aside from higher resolution and performance of course. The actual graphics tech is still the same across PC and consoles, even almost 7 years into the 360.
The same can even be said of PSP and DS, or PSVita and 3DS. The distance in horsepower between the PSP and DS was huge, the PSP made DS look like total garbage. Nowadays however, stack 3DS's Resident Evil Revelations, maybe a few other games, against PSVita's Uncharted and honestly while the graphics are still better on the latter, the gap is much, much smaller then it was last generation.
Try and look at it this way: When graphics reach a point where there is no room for improvement, it's nearly the same on every platform, then it will come down to which platform has the next innovation? I think that's what Nintendo's been doing since the DS and even the Wii. They realize this and are getting a head start on innovation. Anyway, my point is I agree and believe the gap between Wii U and other next-gen systems won't be as big as this generation.
Look like the D-pad is in a more comfortable position and the shoulder buttons are much bigger. I quite like the top screen portion being so slim too. Only one last tidbit I must know before being sold on this thing: Do the games look worse?
Well yes, Nintendo has been around longer than it's rivals so of course it's going to reproduce it's existing IP's... Because they actually HAVE enough IP's to do that with.
There are like 5 Halo games and 4 Uncharted games just this generation alone, I think that proves Nintendo's rivals would do the same if they had as many IP's.
I completely agree, in fact Nintendo has been dealing with insatiable fans for decades. As Genyo Takeda once said: "There is no end to the desire of those who just want more. Give them one, they ask for two. Give them two and the next time they will ask for five instead of three, their desire growing exponentially." I don't want to sound pretentious, but what I've started doing is settling down and looking at the games I already have and how I can be content with them. New games will come, but there's no use crying for them, all that accomplishes is a whiny consumer fan-base and the realization that you can't be happy with what you have.
Also, find a copy of TMNT IV: Turtles in Time and just play that, it's the only game anyone needs.
Nothing wrong with that. Being focused around games is what makes Miiverse practical for use with a game system. It's not just another social network, it's game oriented.
I'm starting to really like Renegade Kid, so far I haven't been disappointed by any of their games... Could be because I don't have any expectations of them though. Never played Dementium but enjoyed Moon and Mutant Mudds.
I'm 50/50 on whether or not I'll be getting the game. I have the first one on 360 which I beat and haven't played since, and after playing the demo for this one I'm finding it hard to get excited seeing as it's so similar. Is it just me or did they do a bad job of showing off the Wii U version at E3? There was no clear cut "here's a few minutes of HD footage of the actual Wii U version"
@L4DYK0M1C I agree also, it seems like video games are more about how far they can push the envelope on extreme violence and swearing rather than offering new creative ideas. That's the feeling I got when watching Ubisoft and EA's presentations.
"I do think that we can improve profitability because with digital goods you avoid things like the cost of goods for media. You do not have the cost of shipping physical goods and you also can hold down inventory risks."
Therefore digital should be cheaper for us as customers as well.
I agree with it. Its main purpose is to offer an un-threatening place for anyone to talk about games and game strategies, or other things in moderation. I personally don't want to see people nonsensically posting over-the-top swearing or sexually explicit content, I want it to be a haven for gamers. There's nothing wrong with the filtering, but I can say right now that people will whine and complain about ANY form of censorship simply because it's censorship, even if it's for the greater good.
I don't get why these development studios always pass their Nintendo platform projects on to smaller teams. They should take the responsibility themselves and put as much effort into it as other platforms, imo.
GameCube wasn't a "me too" take on the PlayStation moniker nor did it sound childish, (you're only thinking that now because of it's childish reputation it gained over time) it was a cube that played games, you're over-thinking it. Also, clicky analogs are a really stupid idea, you know how many PS3 and 360 controllers I've seen that have been screwed because of that, especially from sprinting in Call of Duty. Mario games have always showed best what Nintendo consoles are capable of, I think it's completely necessary to launch with a Mario.
Interesting interview, I really hope Nintendo approves the license! Can't help but notice something however, what's with people not being able to grasp 2D games? I will never be able to understand that, you'd think 2D would be easier considering you have much less to learn, left to right... how hard is that? Lol.
I had a feeling it wasn't all a completely archaic process. I think the developers that do cry about it are just angry that their games weren't good enough, or didn't sell well enough. If you notice the trend behind these "outspoken" independent developers is that their games aren't exactly.. that good, sorry to say. Not to say they are terrible or that nobody likes them, just that they obviously didn't gain a wide appeal for a reason.
Little too pixelated for a SNES game. Super NES was more capable than this, go back and look at Mega Man X's sprite. To be fair though, this looks more like early SNES, Castlevania IV-ish, Simon Belmont's sprite wasn't exactly the greatest.
Great Podcast guys! Really brought back a lot of nostalgia, sounds like your experiences were incredibly similar to mine. (I also take the day off work and hook up my computer to my TV =P)
That's a pretty easy list to come up with given what information we all already know. Sounds a bit iffy to me, Shield Pose? I don't think so, not as a standalone game.
People must get sick of CoD games pretty quick if they're getting excited already over a new one, MW3 just came out 6 months ago and Black Ops 2 is announced already!? Aren't the developers getting sick of making it? Isn't SOMEBODY getting tired of CoD?
Great idea to do this interview NintendoLife, it should bring some closure for those still burned about his initial remarks. Heck, I'm cool with the guy now.
Skyrim is still $59.99 on Steam right now... That's actually more than the physical copy. This doesn't sound like anything new to me, besides he's not confirming that there won't be sales every now and then, who knows.
I've got a 1TB external hard drive that I picked up for $60 so I think I'm set for awhile. I sure hope people don't make a big deal about the Wii U not coming with a hard drive, because honestly externals are in abundance and pretty cheap these days.

No Tekken characters, no Gundam (definitely not) and no Tales characters please. Pac-Man makes sense, that must happen.

Dylan Cuthbert is awesome. I really hope Q-Games makes the next Star Fox game. It would be the closest thing to Nintendo making themselves really.
