I think this could be said for all three major console manufacturers, however I don't think Nintendo would let it happen so easily. The one thing Nintendo does good is make their hardware distinct with unique controllers and interfaces. If anything, Sony and Microsoft would go first.
If it does happen, I think that one single, open platform would be beneficial to game developers and publishers in not having to port their game across several different platforms. It would also be nice for gamers not to be left out if they don't own all the currently available platforms.
I've lost track of how many games there are in this series. What is this, the 5th or 6th game? If they ever release a compilation, then I might be interested.
I'd almost go as far as to say the DS Lite was the nicest looking Nintendo handheld ever designed, but I actually like the original 3DS the most so far.
The Wii U will be fine, Nintendo has a lot less to go up against this time around. With the rate of evolution in graphics slowing down these days, the scalability of game engines, and online services in abundance, the Wii U will do just fine. It might not outsell the PS4 as much as the Wii did with PS3 and 360, but I feel confident in saying the PS4 is not a big threat by any means.
Nah I'm not going to get this, I already own the game, there was no lack of 3DS ownership going on here. The whole "we did it for the fans" excuse seems to be very common lately. If your fans cared enough to play your game, they would have bought a 3DS, just like they had to buy other platforms to play your other games.
Sony thrives off of flame wars. Every company has its fanboys, but Sony seems to be the only one that tries to capitalize on them. I suppose if you have no legitimately earned fan support, all you can do is hype up your product and make its supporters feel like part of something big, mean and "cool". When in reality their fans are as shallow and empty as their products.
The WIi has stopped being supported by Nintendo since pretty well 2011, this is no big surprise really. A system that's still being fully supported, or one that's been cut off and phased out, which do you think would sell better? Hmm... One must wonder.
The Wii U is not doomed, Nintendo will do fine, everyone just enjoy their new Wii U systems. It's only going to get better from this point on, with Spring and Summer game releases and system updates, everything with be just peachy. It's better to have fun playing games than worrying about sales figures, the new Nintendo console is here to stay, and you know it.
Either that or this is a spin Gearbox is putting on it because of all the harsh reviews. Between this and Duke Nukem Forever, Gearbox may lose some credibility, so maybe they're trying to point the blame someplace else?
"Some of these notable examples suggest that we may need to gradually stop referring to some series as being "niche" or "JPRGs", but just as new RPGs and so on coming to Nintendo's systems."
Yes! I wholeheartedly agree with you there Tom! It's very refreshing to read that sentence. Each time we call a game JRPG we might as well be calling it "niche" and forever perceiving it as such. I've said it before and I'll say it again, we never needed that label for the past 20 some years.
I'm very excited to play some of these diverse titles.
That's neat and everything, but I still don't like that they are porting this to consoles, making the 3DS version completely obsolete. Thank you Capcom, for making the people who bought the 3DS version feel like they wasted their time and money. Thank you.
Well maybe it wouldn't be in serious trouble if you 'pubs and devs' started talking about future Wii U projects rather than cancelled projects. Put some games on the system, software sells hardware, the platform isn't going to sell itself so stop acting like it. I'm getting really frustrated with third-parties lately, it's like they're collectively trying to phase out Nintendo by cutting off support completely.
This is why I've been hesitant to make the switch to downloadable games. There's just no assurance that your purchases are yours. You're just leaving it in the hands of whichever service you're buying from. Sure, with physical media it can get stolen or become broken, but at least it's left to your responsibility.
It seems like exclusivity doesn't mean anything nowadays. In my opinion, this is both a good thing and a bad thing. It's good for the reason that gamers across a broader range of platforms can experience more games, without feeling left out. It's bad however, because software is what defines hardware. If we have four or five different platforms out there (Nintendo, Xbox, PlayStation, PC, Ouya, etc.) what is the point of having these options if they all have the same games? We might as well collectively choose one platform and support it.
Sure, as a byproduct, exclusivity makes way for "Console Wars" and "Fanboys", but it's undeniable that it's what makes a platform distinct. So when a company like Ubisoft changes their stance and announces a multi-platform plan for their currently exclusive game, they're affecting both Nintendo and its platform supporters, or gamers. The delay is just salt for the wound.
Bayonetta 2 will be the next culprit, that's what I think. Every other third-party exclusive since the GameCube I can think of has broken exclusivity at some point, Resident Evil 4, Viewtiful Joe, Goldeneye 007 remake, No More Heroes, House of the Dead: Overkill, Dead Space Extraction, the list goes on. I don't think the case will be different for Bayonetta 2.
From now on, I think Nintendo gamers should automatically expect any third-party exclusive is a timed-exclusive, and not to get too excited about it being a part of what defines their system of choice.
It wasn't always Sony and Nintendo, but I could see how Microsoft would think that given the era they came into the race. I think it might have fared better for them if they bought Sega, they sure wouldn't have had to try and penetrate their own new brand into the marketplace. Kudos to Microsoft though, if I remember correctly, not a lot of people were open to the Xbox at first.
That's a terrible excuse. The game is ready to be released, Wii U gamers could have it as a timed exclusive, but they're holding it back to the end of the year for the other systems. That's just so frustrating.
Nothing wrong with that. At least you won't have 10 year old Call of Duty players trying to send you a Friend Request for no other reason than to fill up their Friend List.
Why do I get the feeling that third-party developers are abandoning the Wii U ship? I think the fact that EA has recently stated they are investing in the next-gen (which may mean not the Wii U) and nobody is releasing their games on Wii U right now or even planning to, combined with this new announcement is making it all the more disappointing for Nintendo fans. To me, this isn't just about Rayman Legends, it's about third-parties not fully supporting Wii U. Yes the game is still coming out on Wii U, that much hasn't changed, but it shows that Ubisoft is losing faith in the platform which could mean less support in the future.
Man, it sure is funny how people act over the internet, hiding under the blanket of anonymity. I'm looking at you @K1LLEGAL! Have some respect for TBD, they're just doing their job.
Well so much for building hype for the 3DS version. They might as well be saying "Don't bother buying the 3DS version, just wait until we break exclusivity with Nintendo and make this for PS3 and 360 but not Wii U because well... It's Nintendo and we're a third-party developer, third-parties don't support Nintendo home consoles, everyone knows that."
What I'm wondering is, why do people even talk about this crap anymore? Unless you're talking about custom building a PC, there's no point because pretty damn soon all video game graphics are going to look the same. There's only so much that hardware can do, the rest is up to the artistic integrity of the developers.
Also, shouldn't the fact that the DS outsold the PSP, and the Wii outsold the 360 and PS3 kind of tell everyone that graphics don't matter squat when it comes to video games? It's not the video in "video games" that counts, it's the games.
I get the impression that Nintendo is getting ready to kick some a** and take names. Seriously, they must be tired of so-so sales results, and Nintendo is a company with a lot of power, if they want to make some changes, you better believe it's going to be big. What we've seen with the Wii U so far is nothing, just wait until the other companies release their systems, that's when things will get really interesting.
So pretty much what I get from this is that EA is totally snubbing the Wii U because they're underwhelmed by it, and instead looking forward to the next Xbox and PlayStation. I think the point that they're failing to see, perhaps due to their bullish outlook toward the so-called "8th Gen", is that there isn't going to be success on Nintendo's platform if you DON'T try to support it and actually release your games on it. You think by releasing the third iteration in the Mass Effect series (which is good, but clearly doesn't make sense) and a couple of your annual sports titles that you're going to be able to accurately test the Wii U market? How about competing with Black Ops: 2 and releasing Battlefield? Something that makes sense. You can't just blame the Wii U for your companies' bad strategy. I bet if you look at Ubisoft, they'd have something totally different to say about it, because they actually TRY.
I think the reason the market is becoming stagnant is largely due to the fact that the next generation hasn't really started yet, and there just isn't general interest in video games right now. Yes, the Wii U is eighth-gen, but because Sony and Microsoft haven't even started generating excitement or really said anything at all about their next systems, that's sort of slowing things down for Nintendo as well, as it's affecting the industry at large.
Now the only problem I see is, will the next systems actually generate enough excitement and interest to bring the industry back into the shape it was 5 or 6 years ago? It's hard to say considering nearly every kind of digital service has been offered by what's already available, and the evolution rate of graphics is slowing down tremendously compared to when the Xbox 360 and PS3 came out. They're going to have to think of something truly innovative other than graphics and more multimedia options to be able to revitalize the industry again, that's just what I think.
I agree with Burning_Spear, I don't see how this statement is in any way hinting at Iwata stepping down. He's saying: "I'm not taking 'no' for an answer, bi***es."
Yay! Luigi's Mansion 2 and Animal Crossing... Nearly 3 years later. When was the last time a "new" 3DS game was announced? If it weren't for the eShop I'd probably never use my 3DS.
And dude, Nintendo, Luigi's Mansion 2 isn't going to bring new audiences to the 3DS... a sequel to a cult "classic" of a game who's purpose inadvertently made early GameCube adopters crave that absent Mario launch title even more. Yeah, no I don't see it.
I still say the reason for 3DS and Wii U not selling as well as DS and Wii are because of customer confusion or lack of interest. I'm sure there are hundreds of thousands of people out there who still think the 3DS is just a DS hardware revision, or that the Wii U is an unnecessary peripheral that comes bundled with the Wii. If Nintendo is surprised that their new platforms aren't selling like the mega-hit platforms of last generation, well then I'm just as surprised to see them surprised, given the lack of marketing clarity surrounding the 3DS and Wii U. Naming their platforms "3DS" and "Wii U" are new yet familiar, sure, but maybe they were too familiar for their own good.
Also, take a look at the GamePad, it has all the functions of an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 controller. This is the crappiest excuse that developers keep using to avoid spending money on Wii U ports.
This wouldn't surprise me even the slightest, after all it is Capcom we're talking about here. I'm pretty sure they actually enjoy the idea of breaking exclusivity, considering how many times they've done it in the past.

It's probably due to server costs or something, but it still seems strange to me.
That's really too bad. I can't say much because I've never actually played the sequel, but after the success of the first game, this comes as a bit of a surprise. I wouldn't be shocked if this were the last Disney game we see from Junction Point.
