Re: Review: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (Switch 2) - Samus Returns In Prime Form

@AlonditeFE

Wow, that’s sad to hear that people can’t even game without being distracted these days, and this person was recording their play through too! We’re not collectively getting dumber, but we sure look like it because we’re so distracted eh?

Most people, regardless of what they think, can’t “multitask” and for those very few who can it’s only in very limited ways. Each time you’re destracted it takes a while for your brain to re-focus on the main task at hand. So how can you even begin to enjoy a game that is built on an immersive experience if you’re checking out and in all the time? 🤔🤯

Re: Review: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (Switch 2) - Samus Returns In Prime Form

It’s weird I read a few of the 80 scored reviews on the game and it seemed like they liked the game over all a bit more than the score they gave it. Are they afraid over hyping the game, or do they fear Metroid fans? Most of the sites giving it less than an 80 are frankly a bit meh TBH as review sites go. A couple I couldn’t read the whole review because it was obvious they had ChatGPT or Gemini assist them, which makes me doubt some of them played the full game or rushed to publish the review.

I wonder how many of the reviews are tinged by nostalgia for the first prime in a negative way that means almost no new prime is going to satisfy them while also the same expectation constrains the series from fully breaking new ground (like BOTW TOTK did). I’d love to read reviews by people who have never played any of the prime series to get their take.

Re: "Consumers Generally Do Not Care" About AI In Games, Says Former Square Enix Exec

MocawNow

I’ve seen meth addicts who don’t care about the negative aspects of the drug. I guess that means we should let it flow freely in the streets and stop worrying about any of the negative consequences to the individuals or society.

Same for AI. Consumers don’t care enough so we should just accept we live in a libertarian tech bro world. No need to research, understand and weigh the consequences, just let the free market be your guide. If it sells it’s s good, and the invisible hand of the market will guide us into a consumption based utopia. Praise Supply Side Jesus and Saint Milton Friedman!

How’s that going for climate change, jobs, healthcare and housing? Seems like it’s going well to me. No need to worry about AI. Nope.

Re: Preview: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Is Great, But I Want To Kill One Of Its Characters

MocawNow

I was going to get Metroid Beyond as a present for my father who loves Metroid games and who specifically appreciates them because they have the least amount of NPC dialogue, and dialogue in general of almost any AAA action adventure game.

I can handle the NPC prattle (I’m managing to enjoy Xenoblade Chronicles X) but for him it would be a deal breaker esp. if it has anything beyond a Zelda games level of NPC interaction.

Re: Feature: Now Samus Is Doing It - What Is It About The 'Akira Slide' That's So Great?

MocawNow

The bike in Zelda BoTW DLC was ridiculous, but fun as hell, so why not have a Metroid game with one? It’s a bit weird with all the tech of the Metroid universe to ride a bike, but I don’t play Metroid games because they seem probable and logical, I play them to escape and have fun.

Sidenote: Akira soundtrack is awesome to make art/craft to or just daydream. Check it out if you haven’t yet.

Re: EA Staff Are Reportedly Less Than Happy With Their Much-Hyped AI "Helpers"

MocawNow

I’m not a fan of “AI” for creative work, but I would leave it up to the artists to figure out how, when and why to use it if I wanted actual productivity gains. They instead keep putting the cart before the horse at places like EA though, but given their long history of being a horrible company to work for I’m not in the least bit surprised.

Re: Feature: Ghosts 'n Goblins Hit Arcades 40 Years Ago, And Its Recent Resurrection Is The Perfect Way To Celebrate

MocawNow

I played ghouls and ghosts and beat it on the Genesis (Megadrive) back in the day. I wanted to like Super Ghouls and Ghosts on the SNES, but if I recall correctly, you can’t shoot/throw weapons upwards like you can in Ghouls and Ghosts and they kinda killed it for me even though it looked great. I’ll have to check and see if you can throw things upward in the new one. If so I’ll give it a go.

Re: Best Super Mario Games Of All Time

MocawNow

I really want to get into SM 64, but I just can’t get past the blurry sprites, textures and super low polygon count. I grew up playing it intelevision, NES, Master system, and Genesis, but mostly skipped the first gen 3D consoles, so I just don’t have the nostalgia goggles for the games that I think some people do.

I wish they’d release a remaster of SM 64 so even shallow me could enjoy the game play.

Re: Poll: Ahead Of Silksong's Release, Are You 'Finally' Playing Hollow Knight?

MocawNow

I got to a point years ago where I could beat it, but kept going for more of the extras and then never went back to beat it. I almost feel like watching a play through to see if it’s worth it. I have too many games in my backlog like a lot of other people here, so I’m sure I’ll pick up silksong someday, but I want to stop collecting and get back to playing.

Re: Random: Don't Worry Folks, Nintendo Says Mario And Peach Are Just "Good Friends"

MocawNow

Got it. Friends with favors but not in love, because things are complicated in the mushroom kingdom. Or maybe it’s about the abuse of power and sexual dynamics? Peach knows she’s untouchable but loves to manipulate Mario and put him in awkward situations to control him? She could be “slumming it” with passes at Mario just to upset some of her prudish royal relatives.

With Zelda and Link they can say they are friends but we know the feelings run deeper after Tears of the Kingdom.

Re: "It's Heartbreaking" - The Pokémon Company Tech VP Joins Industry In Criticising Microsoft Layoffs

MocawNow

“Fidoucheary responsibility” is what I call it.

If we zoom out from the game industry angle, we can see this is the same pattern playing out in almost every industry and place investors can make a profit, workers and greater society be dammed. Old playbook, new industry and new tech enabling it. From the flat you rent to the tech you populate it with.

MS XBOX is just EA with a hardware division IMHO.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Dev Used Procedural Generation To Manage 100,000 Different Assets

MocawNow

Procedural tools are really handy. Often they can re-scale well too in that you can revisit your node setup etc. and increase the detail and complexity if needed in targeted ways. This is helpful for many parts of the process including making multi platform titles. Great for a more controlled iterative design work flow as well.

Somethings that sets it apart (not saying better) from generative AI are:

1) You can see and understand how the asset was created start to finish along with the ability to use notation and controls making it more accessible to other users.

2) Easily reuse portions of your node graph etc for entirely different games and in different ways.

3) Dictate and control variables in a more granular way.

4) Pending the graph isn’t to intensive, tweak and see changes in real time.

5) Create a system that is “resolution independent” to more “future proof” your assets.

6) Replicate your results faithfully each time.

It would be cool and informative to see the amount of content used straight from the procedural process vs those hand placed with something like a heat map in games for level design. It might be surprising to see what’s been edited by hand the most.

Re: PSA: My Nintendo Store Switch 2 Invites Are Starting To Roll Out

MocawNow

Still waiting for the email. Is there any hope? I’m happy to settle for getting a system a bit after launch, but I’d like to know its going to happen instead of being in preorder purgatory.

What I don’t get is why didn’t they let all the people who met the Nintendo preorder criteria preorder FIRST, before the retailers had theirs up? That would have truly showed loyalty to fans and prevented the most scalping.

Are most retailers holding back some stock for walkins on launch day so people can walk in and maybe get a system, or are they all allocated to preorders?

Re: Xbox Is Raising The Price Of Consoles, Accessories, And Games Worldwide

MocawNow

I know it’s overly simplistic, but this makes no sense outside of the US given supply should be up global with fewer hardware units reaching the US in the next few months and I’d expect demand in the US to go down for Xbox hardware in same time period. Also shouldn’t this only affect new titles not older ones?

Seems like the same pandemic level corp price gouging is at play here to some extent IMHO.

Re: PS5 Digital Edition Now More Expensive Than Switch 2 In UK & Europe

MocawNow

I get the comparison given the price and that they both play games, but when I hear people lamenting that the Switch 2 isn’t as powerful as a PS5 I imagine them walking around with a PS5, large battery and monitor bolted onto a hand cart for play on the go. 😂

And before you come back at me with the ways you can technically play PS5 games on the go with less kit where its more like a streaming service so let’s be honest, it’s not the same thing and requires more cash to do so, connectivity etc.

Steam deck comparisons are more on point given the form factor and use cases, but the PS5 is a bit of a stretch when you consider portability.

Re: Talking Point: How Does Switch 2's Launch Price Compare To Past Nintendo Systems?

MocawNow

And people in the US wonder why they can’t have what their parents or grandparents had. Our dollars simply don’t go as far, so the $450 for a switch looks the same on paper, but feels 30% more expensive because it is as many have pointed out, when you adjust for wages IT IS.

With stagflation setting in it’s only going to get worse in the US.

BTW- anyone who tells you this is only because of a loss of manufacturing jobs is only cherry picking and not giving the full picture. Productivity across the board has gone up, white or blue collar job, while buying power has gone down. Manufacturing costs have also gone down. Expect this to be exacerbated more with AI. What’s gone up? The incomes of large corporations, and the .01%. Coincidence I think not.

That’s where the majority of your money went. Not China, not Mexico etc but right into the pockets of these corps and the mega rich.

Re: "We MUST Resist Buying These Game-Key Releases", Says GamesMaster Host

MocawNow

The digital versions should be cheapest, the key-card ones the next least expensive, and the carts with all or the majority of data onboard should be the most expensive.

Otherwise they’re just passing the cost onto the consumer. It’s shrinkflation of a sorts.

Instead of this semi physical keycard thing meant to entice plastic hoarders, I’d rather the industry developed a block chain method to ensure ownership and track sales/trades using an efficient model, but I guess block chain methods are only for dubious or nefarious uses regardless of their potential in DRM
for creative assets. 😂

Re: Opinion: A Few Too Many Questions & Unwelcome Surprises Are Taking The Shine Off The Switch 2 Reveal

MocawNow

@Spider-Kev

Pray tell me the US goods those countries import from the US in large volumes besides maybe corn and soy? They don’t and won’t buy most of their stuff from us, so they could slap a negative tariff on say Ford F150s and suffer little to no penalty, because nobody buys them there.

If there was a huge trade imbalance to start with that’s your indication that the country will not suffer much from making their US good imports have 0 rate tariffs.

The tariffs are more about Trump having leverage on large US companies using them as negotiation tactic with them for better deals, political or otherwise.

Re: Opinion: A Few Too Many Questions & Unwelcome Surprises Are Taking The Shine Off The Switch 2 Reveal

MocawNow

I feel like they made up their mind on most of the pricing etc. six months ago when the overall economic forecasts were mostly positive. In light of the current economic forecasts it comes off as another greedy company trying to nickle and dime consumers while blaming it on events out of their control, similar to the artificially high levels of inflation on some goods during the pandemic that were far above covering disruption costs.

Japanese companies can sometimes have a hard time pivoting and making changes fast enough do to internal politics and cultural constraints. I hope that’s not the case here but they need to read the room “feelings” wise, not just rely on the user base to explain the practice reasons for price points etc.

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 Priced At $449.99 For The Base Console

MocawNow

The Canadians are getting a raw deal IMHO. Currently the Canadian dollar is valued at 30% less than the USD, but that means the Switch 2 should be more like 585 Canadian, not 630!

If the US (Trump) wasn’t detaining people for idiotic reasons coming from Canada I’d advise Canadians to travel to low or no sales tax states in the US, have a holiday, and pick up a few to scalp or sell to friends back home. Canadians are getting gouged.

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 Priced At $449.99 For The Base Console

MocawNow

I don’t like the price, but if you adjust for inflation the first switch would cost $392.88, and that’s actually at an US inflation rate calculated in February! Toss in some padding to soften the blow of tariffs and the switch 2 price makes sense. I’d argue it’s also a lot closer in capabilities to current gen consoles than when the switch 1 came out, since that was severely underpowered at the jump.

I’ll hold out to buy until there are more first party games I’m interested in, but I don’t think the price is as crazy as some are making it out to be. Inflation sucks, but it’s the reality we live in.
