It's hard to believe, especially since I just about remember this one happening, that Ghosts 'n Goblins, Capcom's seminal (and seminally difficult) coin-op classic, first arrived in smoky arcade halls in Japan 40 years ago. Four entire decades. Deary me.
I know I sound like a broken record at this point, but what is time, actually? Anyway, I have a long-standing association with the Ghosts 'n Goblins games, from arcade all the way through NES, Commodore 64 and SNES, and it's never really been a pleasant one overall. I'd pump my coins into the arcade version mostly just to see the graphics on Arthur as his gear deteriorated. And when I was controlling him, you best believe it crumbled way faster than any known technology could keep up with repairing. So it was an expensive little hobby I got myself into.

Let's cut to the chase: I absolutely suck at Ghosts 'n Goblins. But I've also always seen the appeal, and it's always won me over. From the original, which I had to spend a lot of time in my local chip shop to get a go on, right through Ghouls n Ghosts, Super Ghouls n Ghosts (which has long been my personal fave) and so on, until I sort of just gave up. I moved on and did other things. Nothing of significance, I should add. Ok, old man. Nice story, thanks for coming out and sharing.
But wait! If you enjoy the idea of this series, or you've tried it in the past and baulked at its difficulty to the point you gave up, you might be surprised at how much you may enjoy Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection which I bought despite fully believing I wouldn't finish the first level due to stress. But I forged ahead, and it was well worth it.
It's hard, even on its default setting, and I can't even begin to imagine the harder challenges because I'm never going there, but Capcom's re-ignited effort is a genuinely fantastic action-platformer. And it's one that I think should have lots of appeal for Dark Souls-hardened gamers of today, especially because, as difficult as it is, and it must be to stay true to its roots, it's very well-balanced, so that even a little effort will see you gain a good foothold.
And gaining a foothold, in my mind, is something that many entries in this series previously didn't give you a chance to do, unless you were very committed in a way many players never really would be. With Tokuro Fujiwara's snazzy return to his own franchise, there's a better curve into the action. Arthur can now turn and attack from a crouched position, which makes a big difference for knocking back pesky rear invaders (no laughing at the back of the class, please), and although he's still restricted in movement, he feels much more reactive, in turn making deaths feel a little easier to swallow.
The checkpointing here is still brutal, but as our 8/10 review of the game said back at release:
"this penalty is absolutely required for learning the stage by rote, and while you need monk-like resolve and no small amount of mental fortitude to see your way to victory, it can be achieved. This series has always been about slow, measured memorisation: knowing your routes, methods and weapon specifics, and how to avoid chests containing disability-spelling magician."
It really is one of those moreish affairs that gets under your skin, especially if you're like me, and you sort of have to finish it then. Which is a good thing! It's perfectly made, impressively designed across the board, and there's a newly impressive variety been added to environs. It's almost a little emotional to see Arthur and the old shuffle gang looking so well. Also, dying doesn't even feel so bad when everything is so wonderfully well-animated, does it?
If this speaks to you, know you'll have a great time with Resurrection. A truly harsh but fair game that deserves a heck of a lot more chatter about it than I've seen amongst my gaming pals since it dropped back in 2021. It's also a real looker, and watching Arthur's gear fall off is still, for some reason, and maybe I need to see someone about this, but I find it mesmerising. What a visual loop! Anyway happy birthday Ghosts 'n Goblins. God knows how many 10p coins you've cost me over the years, but I appreciate you all the same.
Now. where did I put that infinite health cheat code...
Have you played Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection yet? Fan (or absolute loather) of the series in general? Let us know!

Not to be that guy but resurrection is a completely new title, not a remake
@IceClimbersMain nobody has said otherwise at any point.
I enjoyed Resurrection back when it released, I oughta revisit it, now that spooky season is nigh. Now I'm just waiting for Capcom to resurrect Demon's Crest, which I think I might actually like even more than Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts.
@PJOReilly In the poll it calls Resurrection a remake in the first option, just thought it was funny.
I recently tried to begin a playthrough on Knight but man its a brutal game for me. I've gotten pretty far in that mode before (ane beat it on the one below, Squire?) but my patience may have been more intact then. If i feel up to it ill go for it
I'll never forget Ghouls 'n Ghosts and that music, specifically on C64. It's crazy that Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection never got a physical release, I loved it.
I prefer Chyōmakaimura (Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts) on SNES.
I'm not against cartoon graphics/style, but Resurrection looks unappealing.
@KociolekDoSyta Stage 1 theme from Chyōmakaimura on SNES is my favourite track in the series.
@IceClimbersMain Oh I see now. I didn't make the poll!
Hell yea loved the nes version, so fun getting wrecked by a flying demon 10 seconds into the game. Resurrected is awesome!
It's too hard for me, looks good though
@Vyacheslav333 Here's a fantastic remix from 4th level of Ghouls 'n Ghosts on C64

My main poison was Ghouls & Ghosts (Genesis). Arcade Ghosts & Goblins stole a lot of coin back in the day. The remake levels (initial ones) seems more like Ghouls & Ghosts.
Resurrected is absolutely brilliant and I love it!
It's extremely well made, filled to the brim with brilliant ideas, it looks, sounds and plays awesome. It's just incredible.
Resurrection art style just doesnt do anything for me unfortunately. Some series should stick to pixel art.
@OldManHermit More like WiseManHermit. Demon's Crest does need to be revisited.
I like "hard" games but I found resurrection to be just too full of cheap shots and blind corners to really have fun with. just has no "flow" to me (even compared to the old ones, of which I agree "Super" is the best ✌️)
I sadly don’t have the time/patience to learn a game like this these days. I can actually beat GnG and Super quite easily, but I found Resurrection just didn’t click with me.
Super GnG is my fave in the entire "series." And if the game infuriated you, look up and watch PJ's GDQ "All Weapons" run on the YouTube, 'tis a giggle, n'yes. I haven't played Resurrection yet, mind. Backlog is shocking, is what that is.
@PJOReilly Just a heads-up, you call it "Resurrected" throughout the article but I think it's "Resurrection."
I think I heard about this game at launch, but I'd completely forgotten about it. Thanks for the reminder; I'm gonna check it out! I'm with you in having always been interested in, but overwhelmed by, this series.
Super Ghost N Goblins, one of my top three games of all time... you can never go wrong with this franchise. Should probably also point out that there is a Capcom retro collection on Humble Bundle right now that offers this and many many other Capcom games for a really nice price.
@hisownsidekick Deary me! Can't believe i didn't notice that ! I'll blame Friday feelings, cheers for the heads-up 🙂
Maximo:Ghosts to Glory brought this series into 3D and is one of my favorite games of all time. Too bad it's stuck on the PS2. I'd LOVE to have a Switch port.
@PJOReilly Enjoy your weekend!
Ghosts and Goblins has been one of my favorite series since childhood. I’ve always bought all the games and they have always kicked my ass and left me feeling humble. I will definitely be resurrecting this one during Halloween season. Thanks for the article.
I have awesome memories of Super Ghouls and Ghosts (and of Ghouls and Ghosts, to a lesser extent), but not of Ghosts and Goblins. The feeling of being tortured and punished still resonated when I tried it again some time ago on Capcom Arcade Stadium LOL
But I'm really into Ressurection. It's hard but on a different level. Hard but possible
Ghosts ‘n Goblins was the second game I got for my NES (after Super Mario Bros). Those were the only two games I had for several months. I played GnG so much I eventually got good and beat it. The first time I got to the end and the game suddenly put me back at the beginning, I thought I encountered a glitch and turned the game off disappointed. A week or two later I played through it twice to see if something different might happen and was elated to actually see an ending screen. I had no idea you had to play through twice until I did it.
Super Ghouls ‘ Ghosts was purposely my second SNES game. I thought it was great. I played Resurrection back in 2021. Looking at my notes I played through it twice and had a good time playing it.
I always thought the character moved like a brick outhouse, a fridge with legs, a boulder with a shoulder, a fat lazy tabby cat in a hot window on a Tuesday afternoon, you know like somewhat slow.
I played ghouls and ghosts and beat it on the Genesis (Megadrive) back in the day. I wanted to like Super Ghouls and Ghosts on the SNES, but if I recall correctly, you can’t shoot/throw weapons upwards like you can in Ghouls and Ghosts and they kinda killed it for me even though it looked great. I’ll have to check and see if you can throw things upward in the new one. If so I’ll give it a go.
Am I the only person who remembers playing this when it released in the arcades?
Please don't let me be the only old timer here.😁
I will join the chorus of readers saying the art style was a big let down for me. There are some indie devs creating incredibly looking modern pixel art with mood lighting which would be perfect for this type of game.
Also not a fan of the difficulty options here. The game just feels unfair on any setting.
A game like this, for the importance of the series alone, should have been released physically, Capcom should have put on pause their digital only policy this time, the same way they did with other releases. All these years later and still it's trapped in digital storefronts.
Anyway, I started with the Mega Drive entry, I love it despite its difficulty, but the original entry is brutal. Coincidentally I played it yesterday on an arcade bar in Barcelona, didn't even get to the river. So hard...
Happy 40th birthday Ghosts 'n Goblins.🎂
Here's some dissent from a diehard G&G fan:
The perfect way to celebrate is to beat Ghouls'n Ghosts on my MVS candy cab, hooked up to a MiSTercade.🤩
Resurrection was utter ***** tbh and I'll think twice, before purchasing the next entry in this series.😮
Cursed Castilla EX is worth a go, for people who want more of the same! I prefer it in some ways, to be honest.
@PJOReilly What a shame it doesn't seem to be available for the Switch anymore (at least I can't find it on the UK eShop).
@Freek Vaguely, yes.
This new game looks...dunno, like, too "clean". It's hard to describe. Maybe if it had some sort of grit filter or something. But as-is, it reminds closely of the M.U.L.E. remake (which got pulled from platforms). It just doesn't have that same spirit.
@sketchturner totally agree Maximo remastered would be amazing
@insx it's showing up for me when I jiat type Ghosts n Goblins, it's the first choice then, UK eShop
Loved The series upto Super Ghouls n Ghosts. Hated the new Resurrection, very disappointed, graphics look like the were made on flash and the difficulty was too high to call it fun and this is coming from someone who has completed Ghouls n Ghosts arcade and Super Ghouls n Ghosts with one credit.
Is that tagline a nod to an old Ferrero Rocher ad? Always wanted to play ghost and goblins apart from getting brutally destroyed back in 80/90s for my 40c in the arcade I don’t think I ever went back.
Absolutely adore these games! On any given day, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Ultimate Ghosts n' Goblins, and Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection could be considered my favorite game in the series. Played the latter two to 100% competition and they were a RIDE.
I'm still completely terrible at the original arcade and NES games, but I do well with Digital Eclipse's GBC port. It uses the NES graphics, but fixes the stuttering jankiness and tones down the difficulty slightly to accommodate the smaller screen size. My preferred way to play the original!
Resurrection is a masterpiece, you need to learn it and the game is built that way, retaining its arcade game roots, the more you learn the patterns and the more you can improvise as well and get into the flow of no-hit runs. You would die repeatedly in any title in the series that’s not called Super if you didn’t learn the patterns and how to approach the stage, and Resurrection isn’t any different. Ghost’n Goblins has still my favorite feel and balance in the series, but it’s the one where any lag introduced by an emulator is felt the worse, it stiffens the movement as well (Capcom Arcade Stadium release is not bad, it’s decent, well worth 2 Euros/USD. Seriously guys, this game and its sequel cost 2€ each, support them!. (@timp29 just 1.99€/$ on Switch! https://www.dekudeals.com/items/capcom-arcade-stadiumghouls-n-ghosts ) Ghouls ‘n Ghosts has the best look, the best stages, the best music and some of the best gameplay in the series but its flow suffers a bit with too many stop gaps and stop-and-go enemy encounters that fragments its flow too much imo. SGNG is the most approachable and “console-title” like, a fantastic entry in its own right. @milt @whitespy12 you have good taste sir, it just pains me to see how many don’t like it (fair) didn’t give a chance at all (usually the artstyle doesn’t gel with them) or say it has no flow and cheap death (pretty obvious they didn’t play it much). The artstyle budget-looking “flash-like” animation were such a bummer to me when the game was revealed, so I can relate, but turns out short videos don’t do it justice, you just gotta see the game in motion in a not compressed as heck youtube video. It’s glorious. What seemed flash-like is instead marionette-style animation and once you see how cool looking and artistic it is, chances are you’ll do a 180° like I did. The artstyle is magical, true to the series but with this new spin, unlike awful bad-cgi looking ***** like the new Bubble Bobble and Snow Bros. To be honest, it feels like a miracle this game was made at all, and they must have used their tiny budget to its max potential and beyond. I’ll support the series blindfolded if another one ever comes out.
Ghosts n Goblins.. Super ghouls n Ghosts.. etc etc.. i still need to somehow finish these difficult but awesome games.. been trying off/on since the beginning..
Also, I wish we could get a physical complete on Cartridge Ghosts n Goblins Collection for Nintendo Switch-
Well, I said in my earlier comment that I'd check it out based on this article, and I did. I haven't gotten very far AT ALL, but... I really like it so far. It's very hard and the jumping requires getting used to, but the fact that there's actually a skill tree that you can progress through makes it so much more interesting to me (I'm one of those people who loves RPG elements in nearly everything, haha). Part of what's getting me killed so much is the fact that it's a much more methodical game than you'd think, given its arcade roots. But of course the originals were also much more methodical than a lot of arcade games back then, I believe. You hear the intense music and you see all the monsters and baddies on the screen and all the effects are going off and sometimes you panic, and you try to treat it more like Metal Slug, which gets you killed. It's been very interesting so far!
@DashKappei I fully agree with you about the artwork. It's better in person than it is in screenshots or videos and it really is more of a marionette style of animation. I personally would have loved to see a modern, lavish pixel art style reminiscent of the older games, but I honestly don't mind what we got. I'd rather get this new game by the original creator with an "okay" art style than get nothing at all because the budget couldn't be worked out for a more elaborate style.
I'm proud to say that I almost reached the final room in the arcade version of Ghosts & Goblins. I reached the top of the penultimate level several times and would then get beaten by the two guardians. I actually killed one at least on one occasion before the other one got me. The trick with that game was to tap the joystick forward when shooting because that would unleash a flurry of knives. That made some of the beefy enemies, and those damn dragons and charging red demons, easy to cut down.
It wasn't until the NES version where I beat the game, albeit using a cheat code to start me at the penultimate level. I could comfortably get there anyway, so the motive at this point was to save time. Of course, beating the final monster (who wasn't that hard) sent you back to the start of the game to do it all over again. Only then did you beat the game. Naturally, I used the secret level select to go beat the final boss again.
With Resurrection, I only acquired it about 6 months ago during a sale and how have my skills and reflexes lapsed in 40 years. I started on the default difficulty before dropping it a level after constant deaths in the second stage. Then I was still dying. I haven't been back to it since! I will need to drop the difficulty further, which, I believe, is the lowest one available.
Super Ghouls & Ghosts on the SNES didn't present a huge challenge at the time. With the gold armour and some of the weapons, you were almost "OP".
Your video review was entertaining, and honest. I enjoyed it.
@OldManHermit That would be great.
Ye-ah, I only played super ghouls & ghosts, & damn was it hard...the absolute worst is FINALLY making it all the way through to the end, only to get "Sorry Mario, but our princess is in another castle'd" back to the beginning & forced to do it all over again, only harder & with yer less than ideal weapons system/progression, that you became sure is the ONLY way to beat the game....dammit! 😅
Maybe I'm weird, but I like the Genesis version the best.
