Re: First Impressions: 3D After Burner II

Y'know, I always thought Arika and Grezzo were the best at remastering old games. Then M2 comes along and shows everyone how it's done. I love how they consider every possible thing a fan could want and add it in so that the remasters have something for everyone.

Re: Sega Looking To Bring More Free-To-Play Titles To The 3DS

Magikarp3

Y'know, I'd say that the freemium model and racing games don't mix well, but the amount of money I've dropped playing Initial D games in the arcade begs to differ. Seriously hope this one gets localised!

EDIT: Just realised that it's not an actual racing game. Might pass then D:

Re: Video: Watch The Chickens Come Home To Roost In The New 3DS Harvest Moon

I'm a bit of a miser to be honest. I haven't used the online sharing function in HM:ANB a single time, instead I prefer to climb my way up the ladders with pure grit and hard work. This does have the side effect of being dirt poor and a laughing stock at each crop festival for the first 5 or so years, but it's worth it for the eventual glory!!

So yeah, might skip on this one if it's all about the connectedness. Although I'll still see what kind of people the bachelorettes are like - I didn't like the cast from ANB too much, although perhaps it's because I had to build all their houses for them and half of them didn't even say thanks

Re: Weirdness: This Chinese School Has an Enormous Mario Mural on its Building

Magikarp3

Back when I visited China, my 12 year old cousin was playing a non-translated version of Super Mario 64 DS. He was stuck on the Bowser boss where you had to spin him around since he couldn't understand the English instructions, so I beat the boss for him and looked like a total baller XD

Good to see these kids have a little fun, judging by how tough the Chinese schooling system can be

Re: SEGA Offers Atlus Its Dormant IPs and States The Company Will "Remain The Same" Under SEGA Ownership

Magikarp3

This is great news, and expected too. Although didn't Sega make Skies of Arcadia and the Phantasy Star series, which were both quite good RPG's?

Atlus doesn't seem like the kind of studio which would go and resurrect all of Sega's forgotten IP's though, as awesome as that would be. If anything, Atlus is better at making their own original stuff, and it might even be a waste for them to be confined to expectations of Sega's games.

Re: Review: Senran Kagura Burst (3DS eShop)

Hibari fights with the incredibly endearing art of seemingly random flailing.

From videos, I'd always wondered what this style was, but you've described it perfectly

This review was hilarious, here's hoping the game lives up to it haha

Re: Nintendo "Would Like to Enrich" Its Virtual Console Lineup

Magikarp3

I actually quite like where the 3DS VC's at right now. There's a good mix of games in all genres from a variety of different publishers. If I were a new consumer who'd just bought a 3DS, I would've taken a look at the current line-up and been spoiled silly.

As someone who's already bought a huge amount of VC titles though, I guess more wouldn't hurt

Re: Bravely Default To Feature Optional Special Attack Abilities as Microtransactions

Magikarp3

The difficulty is that when you make a long game, you want everyone who plays it to finish it. Otherwise, all the resources you spent making the endgame might as well be worthless. On the other hand, you don't want to make a game so easy in the hope that all players will finish it, because then players looking for a challenge will be unsatisfied. This option means that you can skip difficult parts. It doesn't mean parts will be locked off unless you pay. I don't know why the site had to blow up on the mention of the word "microtransaction".

On that note, I don't know why Square Enix didn't just bother putting in traditional difficulty settings either.

Re: News Site Claims That Zelda "Takes A Dim View Of Workers, People Of Colour And Women"

Magikarp3

Just popping out to mention, I think NintendoLife's coverage is missing two crucial paragraphs from the article:

"Some readers may take criticism of “Ocarina” as dismissal of the game. But this isn’t the case. As Feminist Frequency blogger Anita Sarkeesian says, “Remember that it’s both possible and even necessary to simultaneously enjoy media while also being critical of its more problematic or pernicious aspects.”

Because games’ technological capabilities have increased so rapidly since “Ocarina” was released, I suspect the title’s reputation is somewhat inflated due to nostalgia of critics of a certain age. But it’s a nostalgia I share. There is no game with which I have more fond memories. So criticism here should be interpreted as loyal opposition."

This changes the tone of the article completely. It's not saying that the game is racist, sexist and should be lambasted at every opportunity. It just gives a potential lens for reading through the discourses of race, gender and class. It's to offer a new way of thinking about the game world because the writer himself acknowledges that the most common view of Ocarina is that it's the best game ever.

Also, the tagline for the NL article becomes a whole lot funnier when one checks the Salon writer's profile and sees that he's written two articles - the other one is on Rockstar and GTA

Re: News Site Claims That Zelda "Takes A Dim View Of Workers, People Of Colour And Women"

Magikarp3

To this I say fair game. This guy has taken the time to deeply probe the game and encapsulate its errors and flaws in a piece of well planned academic writing. Even if he finds fault with some elements of the game, that's necessary as part of academic discourse. There is no single book or film without harsh criticism, no matter how acclaimed it might be, for example.

So tl;dr to gamers, this kind of writing is exactly what we want! Don't bash it!

Re: Review: Star Soldier (3DS eShop / NES)

Magikarp3

Haha, this review was a great read! I don't think I'll get it, but learning about the history and mechanics in such an in-depth fashion is a breath of fresh air after all these "here's what's good, here's what's bad" reviews lately

Re: Nicalis Teases SNES-Style JRPG Title For 3DS

Magikarp3

Wait, are they making the title or just publishing it? Because the latter would take ~two years and the former would take three. It's a little early to get excited

not to mention we're still waiting on a few more games that they'd teased a while ago

Re: SEGA Reveals Jump in Profits in Q2 Results

Magikarp3

Woohoo, great job Sega! To be honest I never thought Company of Heroes 2 would do spectacularly, but it's good to hear that in these hard times there are people who can still make a profit in the games industry.

Re: Departing Eidos Montreal Boss Says Square Enix "Has Some Things To Learn" About Selling Games

Magikarp3

Hey guys, this article is about Eidos Montreal. Thus the games he was likely referring to are Tomb Raider, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Sleeping Dogs. The latter two were marketed terribly, even though they were excellent games. Human Revolution has the potential to become a sleeper hit like the original Deus Ex imo.

Eidos operates more or less independently from the Japanese Square-Enix though, so there's no point asking for Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts.

Ah who am I kidding, there's no point commenting here
