Re: Talking Point: The Next-Gen Console War is Wii U's to Lose

LordessMeep

@Sanquine - Speaking of Sony, I have a PSP from the last generation which has lasted me over five years now. While Nintendo stumbles and falls a lot, overall I disagree less with Ninty than with Sony. I would've picked up a Vita this handheld generation but then they had to remove the UMD drive (consequently, the backward compatibility) and then there was the whole thing with the Vita memory cards. :/ I won't be getting the PS4 given the to be exorbitant price and I wasn't really impressed with the system any way. Also, lack of backward compatibility. And I play my non-Ninty titles on PC now.

To clarify the incoherent rant - Sony is not an evil company in my eyes, it's just that they've made far more missteps with me than Nintendo has. Backward compatibility means a lot to me and I'd just like to use normal SD cards please.

Re: Talking Point: The Next-Gen Console War is Wii U's to Lose

LordessMeep

I am really, really curious about the price points of the PS4 and NextBox. It could very well determine how well the Wii U would do when compared to those behemoths. I still hope for Nintendo to seize the market or, at least, stay relevant.. because the Wii U offers an experience that the other two don't.

@rjejr makes a good point about the 0.30c games. About time they start offering their VC goodies at iOS/Android competitive prices! And release more of them too!

@ThomasBW84 - I'll be surprised if the total console count of the current gen (Wii U/PS4/NextBox) crosses 150 million. O_o I don't have much disposable cash right now, which is why I've already exhausted my game budget for this year.. and I believe only regular gamers would have saved up enough cash for the next gen.

Re: Interview: Michael Pachter On Wii U, 3DS And The Challenges Facing Nintendo This Generation

LordessMeep

@Windy - SAME. I'm more of a handheld gamer and, call me overdramatic, but if Nintendo stopped making their consoles, I'd probably stop console gaming all together. The only other platform that I'd game on would be the PC for the XBLA indie titles and Steam discounts.

I'm throughly puzzled why Patcher here doesn't "get" the gamepad. Why is a second screen bad again? He puts far too much emphasis on third party support too. I mean, third party support is necessary but not integral to the success of the Wii U.

On the other hand, his observations on the Android/iOS gaming market are pretty spot on. Same thing with him not writing off the Wii U just yet.

Re: The Pokémon Company Describes 2013 as a "Key Year" for the Franchise

LordessMeep

Given that this is the first time NA and EU regions will be getting a mainline Pokemon game simultaneously AND that they're moving on to the next generation, it is a pretty important time for the franchise. They're moving on to 3D models, may be even open world exploration, and it's crucial for them to make the game so that it appeals to the older fans and new ones alike.

I can't help but wish for multiple save files all the same. I want to play an entirely new game without deleting my older pokes, damn it! T^T

Re: Fantasy Life Trademark Appears in the U.S.

LordessMeep

Late reaction is late... but I am excite.

Been waiting for this game to arrive since it hit Japan. Hope to God it comes around the holidays... but AC:NL took close to 8-10 months to be localized (and is a priority title too!) so dunno.

Happy Anniversary, you guys!

I joined the site only recently, after lurking around for a while because I am an absolute sucker for your comments section design. Seriously, it's so clean and organized! I look forward to more years with you all! :3

Re: Talking Point: Going Mobile Will Give Miiverse a New Lease of Life

LordessMeep

I for one absolutely love the charm of a Nintendo interface, regardless of it being clunky. A good example I can provide is the eShop on the 3DS - the opening music makes me instantly cheery. Sure, you have to scroll through an insane number of arbitrary groups; but I love it all the same.

Having the Miiverse on mobile platforms would be great for Wii U owners. I do hope both the Miiverse and the NNIDs make their way to the 3DS soon.

Re: Epic Games Rules Out Unreal Engine 4 For Wii U

LordessMeep

Ouch. And we have another reason for our dear third parties to spew when asked why their game would be skipping the Wii U. Graphics mean very little to me, so the UE4 tech demo was not all impressive. It's pretty, yes, but in the long run, games will ultimately stand out because of their spectacular gameplay. The news disappoints me nonetheless, because now there'd be more negative press about the Wii U.

It seems pretty sad to see western developers treat Nintendo as if they're irrelevant, ignoring the fact that they've been around a lot longer than most. I really hope the newer releases will turn things around for the Wii U in the west, I wouldn't want Nintendo off the western market. :/

Re: New Research Claims Wii U Success Hinges On A Price Cut

LordessMeep

PS4/NextBox boast a lot of power, so $350 is a no go. I'd say they'd be anywhere between $400-$450. They make a really good point about the used game market and DRM practices. Lack of a UMD drive on the PSVita was a major reason (aside from the price) why I didn't upgrade from a PSP. PS4's whole "On Cloud BC" is all fine and dandy on paper, but in practice it'd be pretty iffy, especially if it requires a constant internet connection. It's one thing to play PS1/PS2 games using that, but to play a PS3 game, when it'd be easier to just put in a disk, would be pretty ridiculous.

A price drop for the Wii U would be valid AFTER some first party titles have been released and they still haven't shifted enough systems.

Re: Talking Point: An Open Letter To Nintendo

LordessMeep

I literally laughed out loud at "Zelda hasn't been exciting since Ocarina".

Quite honestly, I don't understand what sort of games this guy wants from the third parties - those FPS sequels that have been done before? I agree with his stance on securing third-party support, but, personally, I feel there are very few AAA third party titles that are genuinely innovative. Most feel like a rehash, so I don't see this as a huge loss. Then again, I'm not the biggest FPS fan and graphics mean very little to me, so I can't tell the difference. What they need to do is get third parties that are actually excited to develop for the Wii U, Criterion being an example.

Another good point he makes is about advertisement. More than anything, the Wii U would benefit from awareness. They need to put out interesting ads to draw in folk and tell them that the Wii U is a completely different beast from the Wii.

The rest of his rant, I disagree with. What was wrong with Samus being explored as a character? Galaxy games may have sold less that NSMB Wii but that doesn't automatically make them bad. @Tryken put it pretty well - "NSMB is the problem, not the solution." Even worse is that despite being a (self-acclaimed) software developer, he dislikes the idea of some Nintendo developers making games they want to make. That pretty much screams "entitled fanboy" to me.

I support Nintendo because of their stellar first party titles and I can (almost always) expect them to deliver some memorable gameplay experiences. Patience is the key with them. The Wii U is fairly new and writing it off this early is silly. Nintendo hasn't even pulled out their big guns yet. If the situation is the same by this holiday season, THEN we have a problem.

Re: No Battlefield 4 For Wii U Because DICE Wants To "Play It Safe"

LordessMeep

Well @Zellybeanie, I have to admit, I laughed.

First Person Shooters in general make me cringe. I dislike the genre mostly because a majority of the offerings are uninteresting and feel like a rehash of what has been done before. Battlefield 4 is no exception to the rule, however, I am slightly torn at all these major third parties skipping the Wii U. One the one hand, a majority of these titles happen to be sequels to another FPS, something that the Wii U can most definitely do without while on the other, these same FPSs could have sold the system. :/

To be honest, I'll be surprised if the PS4/NextBox manage to sell more than the Wii U, given a similar time-frame. Both consoles boast high graphical and processing power, so I can easily see them being retailed at $400+ sans games. I like to think there won't be a lot of people willing to shell out that kind of cash.

Re: Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon Tops Japanese Charts

LordessMeep

I see several Luigi fans in Japan.

It's a really good game, definitely worth the wait. I'm glad they took time to polish the game. I've played it for about twenty hours since I got it on the 24th and it's easily shaping up to be one of the must haves for the 3DS.

Re: Review: HarmoKnight (3DS eShop)

LordessMeep

@FOURSIDE_BOY - I'm actually working through FE:A's Hard/Classic at the moment myself, but that's only on my commute. The rest of my time is given to Luigi's Mansion's Scarescraper.

@RetrogamerFan - It's the exact opposite for me since I had problems on the turning parts and did fine with the rapid attacks. The Bee boss battle should be a little easier if you stock up on hearts from an earlier level. The only must hit is the very last bee that is thrown at you.. if don't hit that, it's game over for you. Your second time around should be a lot more forgiving.

Re: Nicalis Would Like To Bring Monaco or Spelunky To A Nintendo Console

LordessMeep

And this is why Phil Fish should start watching what he says. Twitter is certainly not the platform for him because with the character cap, it's very easy for one person's words to be misinterpreted. It doesn't matter if Fez is a good game, Fish is only putting off potential customers with his rants. Rodriguez's follow up tweet ("Because he doesn't seem to respect his players") pretty much hit the nail on the head.

I had never heard of Monaco till now but I already love the idea of it's four-player co-op on a Nintendo platform.

Re: Review: HarmoKnight (3DS eShop)

LordessMeep

I expected an 8/10 for this game. My first time with the demo was horrendous - I couldn't get through the bicycle stage and the bee boss was terrible, especially the turning bits. You can actually use the Circle Pad and the shoulder buttons on those bits.. I preferred the D-Pad.. though I kept hitting the sides anyway. The second time around was a lot more forgiving because I stocked up on hearts.

Really, HarmoKnight is all about practice and knowing what comes when. I was originally planning to download this Day one, but I've been far too occupied with Luigi's Mansion right now. I'll get this much later down the line now, maybe when there is a price drop.

Re: The Nintendo 3DS Celebrates its Two Year Anniversary

LordessMeep

@Peach64 - Are you me?? . I picked up mine in late December 2012.. and then Midnight Purple was released just a few weeks later. D: Flame Red is not too shabby though. My first game till this September was Super Mario 3D Land. I just had a lot on my plate, what with the last year of college, so I didn't purchase any new games till fall. Even then, I picked up older titles like OOT3D and SM64DS. Pokemon White 2 was another game that occupied my time till FE:A.

2013 has been an absolutely fantastic time to own a 3DS. FE:A has occupied the last six weeks of my gaming time, with it being the perfect thing to play on my hour-long commute. Luigi's Mansion 2 is shaping up to be one of the better games for the 3DS. I just have enough cash for HarmoKnight and AC:NL. For the latter half of this year, it's Pokemon X/Y all the way.. unless Nintendo decides to unleash an original Zelda title (or Majora's Mask for that matter ) for the holiday season. Or an actual handheld 3D Mario game. Either way, my wallet's going to be emptied out.

Re: Talking Point: The Download or Disc Dilemma

LordessMeep

I like boxes but I can't find many retail titles outside of Mario games. As someone who would have to import, downloads are definitely cheaper. I, for one, buy a retail title for about 30% cheaper digitally than if I were to import titles and pay for tracked shipping and customs. Furthermore, I dread losing my game during shipping - you'd have no one to hold responsible and there is little guarantee that you'd be reimbursed for the same.

I believe more people would go digital if Nintendo would just tie games to an account instead of the system.

Re: Fez Creator Believes Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is More Suited To Vita

LordessMeep

Fish makes a good point about MH3U being iffy to control without the CPP. Sure, it might take some learning, but it can get a bit uncomfortable for a few.

After that, all I can discern is that he certainly dislikes the 3DS. What's wrong with two screens again? Several games have used the touchscreen to display a map... or does he like to keep pausing to see where he's going?

Re: Iwata Asks Shines A Light On Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

LordessMeep

My expectations from the game have risen exponentially following the great reviews. I'm still slightly sore about not releasing on Halloween but I'll probably get over it once I have the game. This is certainly shaping up to be one of the great games for the 3DS.

@rayword45 - It's great that they worked with what they had on the 3DS rather than relying on the CPP for an extra Circle Pad and buttons. I can't get a hold of one right now and it would've hampered my portable experience with Luigi's Mansion. I play on the go a lot and the CPP is bulky to carry around.

Re: All New DuckTales is Coming to Wii U

LordessMeep

It's like my childhood just slapped me in the face. O_O
The theme song made me too happy.
@Moshugan - I'd be up for some alternate languages for that theme song.. many of our cartoons were (terribly) dubbed, but we loved 'em all the same.

Re: Review: Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS)

LordessMeep

Wow, 9/10?! Surprised, but this was always a midnight download for me regardless of the score. I'm glad to see that the extra time put into development has not been a waste. The 24th cannot come soon enough for me.

Re: Fantasy Life Trademark Emerges in Europe

LordessMeep

YES. After a bout of depressing news, this one is making me a little bit happy. I hope this means you EU folks get this one first, followed by us NA ones getting this a bit later. I just want FL localized, preferably by this holiday season.

Re: FEZ Creator Insists The Game Wouldn't Work On The 3DS

LordessMeep

The first time I've heard of him (only started keeping up with news recently) and I dislike Phil Fish already. He's certainly not endearing himself to the Nintendo fanbase with his opinions. The whole "Japanese games suck!" thing makes me facepalm, considering a whole bunch of good games that I've played in the last few years have been of Japanese origin.
On the other hand, Fez looks lovely. Not every game HAS to use 3D, so if he reconsiders, I might just buy it (as much as I dislike the idea of supporting this guy). If not, PC it is.

Re: Youkai Watch Releasing This Summer in Japan

LordessMeep

Another Level-5 game that I hope is eventually localized. I'm already waiting on Fantasy Life. There are so many good games that don't make it out of Japan because there isn't a market for them... luckily, there is always the eShop-only option.

Re: Reaction: Doom and Gloom Merchants on Wii U Being Nintendo's Last Home Console

LordessMeep

That comment from GamesTM reeks of ignorance. It's silly to predict the end of a console that hasn't had the chance to show off it's potential yet. I agree with @Tom's latter paragraph - the one about gamers being snobby. I am guilty of reverse snobbery myself. For example, the GamesTM comment clearly showcases the impression I have of these so called 'hardcore' gamers. Adding to that is the way they salivate over something like the PS4 (whose announcement trailer doesn't bother to show actual gameplay aside from some dancing thing using the PSMove) leads me to believe that they're more impressed by 'games' offering high quality graphics rather than actual games. I'm not saying that everyone is like that, but this is just what most of them seem like to me. :/

Regardless, the games for the Wii U haven't come yet, so it's really too early to tell. I said this before on another similar article but - the problem with the Wii U isn't now, it's after the games have released AND the console still isn't selling. Every console needs some time - look at the 3DS's drought. I managed to keep my interest in the system because I adapted late (Dec 2011, following the price drop) and I didn't own a DS before that - ergo, a whole lot of games. I believe the only game I brought at launch in 2012 was Pokemon White 2 (which was actually a DSi game).
Nintendo will bounce back - they've gotten past worse. In the mean time, they need a really good marketing campaign to spread awareness about the Wii U.

Re: Vita Knocks 3DS Down to Second in the Japanese Charts

LordessMeep

You go Vita! Let's hope this boost in sales isn't temporary.
My younger brother and I almost bought a Vita, but the lack of a UMD drive and games we were interested in discouraged us from putting down money for it. It was plenty expensive to, what with the 3G+WiFi model going for close to 40% of the 3DS's prices here (before the price cut! And the 3DS's were all imported!). That combined with the whole memory card ripoff they have going, the 3DS with it's exclusives seemed like a far better choice.
It's not that Vita is a bad system, it's just that how Sony has handled things that it isn't selling as well as it should. :/
Also, the 3DS isn't done yet. Pokemon is a system seller and come October, several would be upgrading from their DS's. Not to mention, before that there are several good franchises like Luigi's Mansion and Animal Crossing that will be released, which will bring in more users.

Re: Talking Point: NFC and AR - Two Cool Extras That Need Some Love

LordessMeep

I have my AR cards nicely tucked inside a pocket in my 3DS's case. I played around with AR back when I'd just gotten the system and wanted to take a break from SM3DL. It's interesting enough, but after a while, the gimmick got old. I really liked how Denpa Men implemented AR and would love to see something like that again.
I disliked the Skylanders way of doing NFC (and I am not looking forward to Disney Infinity either) because it feels more like a pay-to-win game or even on-disk DLC. Bonus content via figurines/cards is fine, but paying extra for a 100% completion? No, thank you.
If Nintendo departs from these two common ways to implement NFC, I'd like to see it.

Re: Team Meat: We'd Work With Nintendo If Meat Boy Made It Into Smash Bros.

LordessMeep

I'm just having a hard time digesting the fact that these guys are being serious. O_o How did they make it this far as indie developers? Indie games are all about risks while doing what you love! You have to sell your game, not have publishers come to you and hand you money for your 'service'.

Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac were good enough games but these two really need to get off their high horse.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto: Luigi's Mansion is Suitable As "Lighter Fare"

LordessMeep

Actually, Luigi's Mansion 2 has been on my wishlist since it was announced for the 3DS way back in 2011. The game was an instant system seller for me. It's a day one, midday (midnight to the US) buy for me.
I do agree with what Miyamoto said about the experience of a game - that's really why I kept returning to the original Luigi's Mansion over and over!

Re: Feature: Series Reboots That Have Divided Gamers

LordessMeep

I liked Skyward Sword but the gameplay was uninteresting. The whole sky/ground thing was pretty iffy, especially the fact that one had to go all the way to the sky in order to go to a different region. I loved the Loftwing music but flying itself could get boring after so many times. Also, revisiting regions to do the same old things was quite tedious. I've heard several people complain about the art style of the game as well, whereas I enjoyed the soft, bright colors. I really liked the story too. SS makes me feel like they focused too much on motion controls and slacked off in the rest of the departments. Throughout my playthrough, I kept feeling like they could so something more... but they didn't.

Luigi's Mansion was criticized for it's length, I believe. It's short, true, but it still offers one of the most unique and enjoyable gameplay experiences.

NSMB has gotten flak this year because two very similar games for different platforms were released within months of each other. Regardless, it sells.

Kid Icarus's controls are why I haven't picked up the game yet. I can't seem to find a CPP for a decent price. Also, @3Dash, from what I've seen of the control schemes being offered, I don't find the ABXY buttons setup (for targeting) very comfortable. And trying to move Pit with the Circle Pad and targeting with the D-pad would be pretty ridiculous.

Re: Miyamoto: Harnessing NFC On Wii U Is Our Priority Right Now

LordessMeep

As someone who relies on the eShop to get her retail titles, this is very bad news. I haven't found very many online retailers that are reliable and have decent shipping charges. In several cases, I've had the total cost come up to close to double the price of the game I'm importing... which is why I rely on the eShop now. I can only imagine what happens if figurines/cards are added into the mix.
Now I don't have a problem if figurines are added on as an extra and are not required to 100% a game. But once NFC becomes central to gameplay, that's when I'll start shunning the game.
While I'm scared by the idea of more figurines, I'm also intrigued by what Nintendo can come up with. I do hope they have some innovative ways take advantage of this technology.

Re: Review: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate (3DS)

LordessMeep

Personally, I wasn't too impressed with the MOF demo. It certainly isn't a day one buy for me.. but I might just pick it up later on, when I have nothing to play.

By the way, the IGN comments section is pretty amusing right now. NL's review is far more comprehensive while IGN's just hates on the game. I mean, being forced to play with a Circle Pad is a negative point? Is playing with the C-Pad really that bad? -.-''
Also, the console wars have started up again.
