Re: WayForward and Ubisoft Releasing The Smurfs 2 on Wii U, Wii and DS

Linkuini

WayForward or not, I'm skipping this one. Those little blue runts are irritating and not much else.

Nothing against WayForward themselves of course, they might not be around today if they weren't willing to slap together the occasional licensed throwaway title. Heck, the fact that some of those licensed games are actually worth playing just makes WayForward more impressive to me.

How to deal with people who don't like a new Pokémon

Claim that for every new Pokémon they have a problem with, you can name 5 from Generation I that are more ridiculous. When they choose one, recite the following list:

1. Jinx
2. Jinx
3. Jinx
4. Mr. Mime
5. JINX!!!

If they continue to argue, respond to each of their points by saying "Jinx!" in an exasperated tone. Repeat until they give up and decide not to bring up the subject with you ever again.

Re: Dead Island: Riptide Is Skipping Wii U

Linkuini

I'm not too interested in Dead Island or Saints Row myself, but I will admit this trend is starting to worry me. I mean, Nintendo's console is finally in HD and it's still too hard to give it some multi-platform love?

Re: Nintendo Facing Lawsuit Over 3D Technology On The 3DS

Linkuini

If he was looking for licensees that would help him make something using the idea he patented, I don't think it's fair to call him a patent troll. If I'm not mistaken, a patent troll simply files or purchases patents in order to obtain money from patent infringement lawsuits, with no intention of actually manufacturing a product. From what it says in this article, I could probably have sympathy for either side of this one.

Re: EA Plans For a Future With Micro-Transactions in All Games

Linkuini

Having new stuff in a game is always fun. Ideally, though, shouldn't the challenge of acquiring said new stuff also be fun? Shouldn't it be more than something you muscle through to avoid spending real money?

Think of Pokémon! You don't catch the best ones just by leveling up enough or saving money for weeks. You catch them by talking to NPCs that know about them, looking over your map, bringing the right items, teaching your pokémon the right moves, venturing into treacherous territory, carefully wearing down your mark, and throwing one pokéball after another until the thing admits your superiority! If you would pay actual money – in any amount – to skip all that, then the answer is not micro-transactions: the answer is play something better!

Good games don't make us do this just to draw the whole thing out longer. Good games put us through these challenges to make us assign more value to the rewards we get for overcoming them. If we care so much more about the rewards than the gameplay it takes to get them, then something has gone truly wrong.

I don't mean to say that there could not possibly be benefits to micro-transactions, but the future looks pretty murky right now...

@SMEXIZELDAMAN
That's the right attitude. When I see this kind of thing, though, it usually sends me a message that whoever made the game wasn't motivated to sell it on the merits of the gameplay, so they resorted to sex appeal to draw a little more attention from the adolescent male demographic. It may not bother everyone, but it bothers me.

Re: Here's What The Next Mario Kart Looks Like

Linkuini

I poured about twenty dollars into the first one when I saw it at a Disney resort. I think that's all I'm willing to spend on Mario Kart in an arcade, though. Having to spend a dollar (or was it $1.25?) for every single race is hard to put up with for too long.

Re: Two Tribes Explains Toki Tori 2 Delay

Linkuini

If the big issue is the level design, that's probably not something that can simply be patched.

A 2D puzzle game with an open world is quite ambitious. Glad to hear they're committed to their goal!

Re: Game Over For THQ As Assets Are Purchased By Rival Publishers

Linkuini

Pretty varied history this publisher had. I could safely ignore the majority of their games, but the company was big enough that most people have probably bought something from them. I think they even distributed the Sonic Advance games here in the US.

I wonder what will become of de Blob...

Re: Review: Rapala Pro Bass Fishing (Wii U)

Linkuini

In addition to the AR Fishing game mentioned, I keep thinking back to how much I enjoyed fishing in that one little area in Twilight Princess. When Nintendo can toss something like that into a game as a side activity, it becomes even more embarrassing when dedicated fishing games fall so short of the mark.
