Re: "All The Bravest" Square Enix Trademark Was for iOS Game, Not Bravely Default Localisation

Linkuini

At least they didn't release a big teaser this time. That was what ticked me off about their port of The World Ends With You. They dropped hints that only people who already played it were likely to get, just to market a game that would be more interesting to people who had not played it.

Here, though, it looks more like fans jumped to conclusions about a trademark for something that had not really been publicized yet, so I don't really feel like getting mad at Square just for making another iOS game.

This malarkey again? Do iOS gamers actually take notice when these teasers come up? I get the impression they mostly draw attention from those with dedicated game platforms. It's like Square Enix is directly targeting its announcements at the people who will be least happy about them!

Re: Review: Tank! Tank! Tank! (Wii U)

I played the arcade version and had a good time. I liked how it showed you a bill for damage to the city and raised your score in proportion to the cost.

Still, it was over so fast, even for an arcade game. Figures.

Re: Wii Mini Is Official And Has No Online Connectivity

Now that I think about it, at that size and price point, this would be perfect for a lot of college dorms. It sure would be nice to have on hand to invite some friends over for the occasional Brawl, or co-op platforming session. College doesn't leave me too much time for that very often, but with my "real" Wii stuck at home, it is certainly a tempting option...

It's probably for the best that I don't live in Canada.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. U Director Explains Why Peach Isn't A Playable Character

Linkuini

I figured the reason we have the blue and yellow toads instead of some other thing was so it could be an homage to the colors of the super famicom logo. I thought that was kinda neat, but apparently I'm the only one.

As for Peach, though, yes, she was playable in Super Mario Bros. 2, but that's a bit of a different game, isn't it? I just have trouble imagining her doing things like wall-kicking, dashing out of cannons, penguin sliding, etc., in a fancy dress, with a higher level of animation than would have been expected back in the 80s or 90s. You could give her the kind of outfit she has in the sports games, but then there's still the fact that she's noticeably taller than the Mario Bros. The difference in height between them and the toads is already arguably pushing it.

When every interview I read about the design of the NSMB games seems to focus on how small details can shape the experience so drastically, I honestly don't see how it is so heinous to see her sidelined again.

Re: Capcom Loses Rights to Sell Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars

Linkuini

Gave it a rent, and it was pretty good. It sure didn't make me a fan of Tatsunoko, though. The bland, same-y looking characters, the cheesy lines, the... giant, walking advertisement for cigarette lighters. Ugh. There were a few standouts, but the license just doesn't hold much appeal for me on the whole. Shame about the game going out of print, but other than that, I don't see much of a reason to hold onto that contract deal.

Re: Wii Owners: Microsoft Wants You To Buy The Xbox 360 This Holiday Season

Linkuini

He "cannot think of a better console", eh? He, um, has actually heard of the Wii U, right? It's probably safe to assume he has, but from the way he talks here, he sounds more like he's unaware that it exists than that he's trying to make the Xbox 360 sound superior to it. I think that's what makes this funnier than other marketing statements, for those who have been asking why we're even talking about it.

Re: Ostrich Island Could Be Making Its Way To Wii U

Linkuini

There's something to be said for a game that's willing to let a novel premise shoulder the weight in the absence of big-budget production values. Still, it would be awfully nice if it didn't look like one of those ugly 3D games out of the late '90s.
