Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #5 - Super Mario Kart

KarateLuigi

Hmm, took me a moment to choose between NTSC and JP. I definitely prefer NTSC's and PAL's colour scheme (border notwithstanding here) which is not only pretty but makes for a better contrast, too. However, character placement feels way more dynamic/lively to me with the JP version - it looks like they're actually racing on a track instead of looking like a single group being all huddled together, and like they could be about to skid off the road. It gives a way better feeling of motion there. It gets the picture of racing across better and gets me more excited.

Or to go for a different phrasing... karts go nyooom!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 24th)

KarateLuigi

Animal Crossing New Leaf dailies and Story of Seasons for singleplayer. Maybe I'll finally get around to playing those demos I have lying around (Oninaki, Dragon Quest...).

As for multiplayer we've been on a roll with Minecraft lately so hopefully there'll be more of that. Gotta finish building that roof!

Re: Review: ONINAKI - A Decent Daemon Distraction

KarateLuigi

@roboshort @PACO_PEREZ I shall join the club. I found that 30 hours is the perfect length for me and length is one factor which can make me shy away from RPGs, especially for story- or quest-heavy games. If anything this gets me more interested in Oninaki.

Re: EA Looking To Bring More Of Its Successful Games To Switch

KarateLuigi

The only thing I'd LOVE to have there would be Sims since I adore that franchise but just aren't a PC gamer. I'd happily take Sims 2 or 3 given it's an actual, full-blown port and not whatever loosely based games they've released on Nintendo platforms in the past.

... And given they don't release every single expansion pack as paid DLC or something. But this is becoming a tall order, isn't it.

Re: Poll: Have You Ever Had Problems With Nintendo Hardware?

KarateLuigi

Let's see...

  • my SNES adapter has a loose contact so you have to figure out the right position for it to work (however, that's been the case for more than twenty years now and it STILL works)
  • infamous N64 analogue stick issue (I played Mario Party. Lots of Mario Party.)
  • my Game Boy Pocket died one day and refuses to turn on. Had a few GB games die on me, too (battery and/or probably dust)
  • analogue sticks on my GameCube controllers are wonky, namely the material itself (doesn't affect functionality but it looks and feels off)
  • sometimes the L button on my DS Lite refuses to work but it can easily be fixed by blowing into it (no hinge issues so far, though)
  • Switch, left analogue stick on my release day grey Joy-Con drifting after use (basically if you press left once it registers thrice or more) which occured within the first year. Can be fixed by using it for a while and using it regularly. Basically the more I use it the less wonky it is

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 17th)

KarateLuigi

@Anti-Matter The Hamtaro series is nothing short of adorable. I've played Heartbreak and Rainbow Rescue and found the former rather delightful. I'd love to have a babble about cute games sometime

As for my weekend, looks like it'll be Animal Crossing New Leaf dailies + turnip business, and Story of Seasons so nothing new or exciting to report. Not sure if co-op buddy will reel me into any multiplayer things, guy's been busy.

As someone who played Atari as a child (though it was already long outdated back then) seeing 3DS games being called "nostalgic" and youth purchases just makes me feel old... that being said, have a nice weekend everyone, and happy gaming!

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #3 - Resident Evil 4

KarateLuigi

PAL for me, hands down. It has an incredible atmosphere to it, it feels tense and ominous, sparks imagination (you can almost hear those crows against minimal ambience) and really has a horror media vibe which I'm missing from its US and JP counterparts. Those seem to be more along the lines of "grey, also you shoot things", makes me wonder whether they'd stand out on a shop's game shelf though I can't judge how the situation was back then around release.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 10th)

KarateLuigi

I'll see what the weekend brings; Animal Crossing NL and Story of Seasons are set in stone. As for multiplayer there might be some more Overcooked 2 (happy belated anniversary!), Minecraft, maybe Mario Tennis Aces. If I can manage to get off my butt I might also check out those demos for Oninaki and Cadence of Hyrule.

Have a great weekend, everyone, and happy gaming!

Re: Pokémon Sword And Shield Will Feature Galarian Forms, New Rivals And Team Yell Revealed

KarateLuigi

@Supadav03 Thank you very much for that link! Much appreciated

I've been on the Pokémon train since the original Red/Blue and welp, I'm really looking forward to this game and today's trailer is getting me more and more excited. There. Felt like getting this out what with all that vocal "I won't buy this so I watch news about it and complain in every comment section instead of keeping that to open discussion threads" rambling everywhere.

I don't care what the box art looks like since I buy a game so I can play it, not to have a nice decoration in my already chock-full game cabinet, that's what merchandise is for. I like what we've seen of this game's graphics so far, it looks interesting to me (I do get that it isn't for everyone and that's fine), I can't wait to see those characters in action, and I'm seriously looking forward to its soundtrack. Also bagpipes. And metal/punk scene stuff and hooligans. But most of all bagpipes.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 3rd)

KarateLuigi

@Anti-Matter Glad to hear you're getting there still wishing you to get well soon during that home straight. Portal Knights and ACNL? Sounds familiar to me that being said, I'm curious about the newest update/DLC addition, it took me by surprise.

Since I forgot to add this to my last post I might as well say it now. I hope everyone's having a nice weekend and happy gaming!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 3rd)

KarateLuigi

The usual Animal Crossing New Leaf dailies plus a fireworks date tomorrow. Otherwise Super Scribblenauts and Story of Seasons for singleplayer, Minecraft and Overcooked 2 for multiplayer (managed to reel a friend into the latter and my co-op buddy and I are tagging along. Fun times!). Possibly some Portal Knights and/or Stardew Valley depending on what I get reeled into.

Re: Pre-Order This Jumbo-Size Mareep Poké Plush For A Small Fortune

KarateLuigi

I can hear them. I can hear collectors' hearts bleeding.

I love the idea of a life-sized Mareep plushie but uh I'm not willing to spend two rents worth of money on it. These things always make me wonder how the whole planning process went (idea, size, material, amount manufactured, minimum price/total manufacturing cost), because... this... is a lot of money for a plushie. Unless it can actually generate electricity to add to its lifelike factor; one could justify buying a fluffy generator for their home.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 27th)

KarateLuigi

@Anti-Matter aww, here's hoping you'll get well soon. Sage tea's good against a sore throat if it's available where you live and if you can handle it.

Apart from my Animal Crossing NL dailies I'm working on finally finishing Harvest Moon A New Beginning (not going for 100 % but there are still some things I would like to see). My co-op buddy's been reeling me into Stardew Valley lately including today and if I'm lucky there'll be some Minecraft and/or Overcooked 2 this weekend. Time will tell.

Re: Poll: Have Your Joy-Con Been Drifting?

KarateLuigi

My grey Joy-Con (release day, bundled with console) likes to get stuck for a bit when moving left and can drift a little. Doesn't matter whether it's attached to the console or not and funnily enough it only happens when I haven't used it in a while (it isn't lying around in the open when not in use so it isn't collecting dust btw). I noticed that if I keep playing it'll stop drifting after a couple of minutes and if I use that controller regularly drifting issues lessen gradually. Quirky that. I just made it a habit to play some puzzle games for a bit when I plan to use it for anything more serious so it can "recalibrate". Issues started early albeit not on day one.

Otherwise I haven't had any problems with my controllers so far and I got them when they were released.

Re: Story Of Seasons: Friends Of Mineral Town Gets Western Release And New Info

KarateLuigi

@k8sMum @Verg make that three with Stardew Valley. I got it solely for its multiplayer and have chucked > 100 hours into it but I always thought I'm the only HM/SoS fan who isn't on the SV hype train. Not to imply that it were a bad game since it certainly isn't, but loving HM/SoS is exactly why SV doesn't work for me as well instead of the other way round. It just misses/fails at what makes me enjoy that franchise in the first place.

As for the game at hand... hoo boy. MFoMT is one of my most favourite HM games and from what I know (M)FoMT is considered to be one of the best entries so it's great that it's getting a remake. But to be honest the art style feels very different to me. Those character portraits look more like fanart rather than official - even more so when you take 3DS HM/SoS' gorgeous portraits into account or FoMT's charming style - and it doesn't help that they've changed characters' looks so much in some cases (compare GBA and remake Carter), though I will say that some actually look better than before.

I will definitely keep an eye on this, because I love MFoMT with all my heart and am genuinely interested in getting this, but I'm too hesitant to make it a day one purchase. I'm a little shaken by that art style feeling so very different while knowing what they're capable of but I'll wait and see how the game itself turns out all in all which I hope will be well.

Re: Feature: It's Time To Lay Down Your ARMS

KarateLuigi

@gaga64 same here. Same here.

I had fun with the Testpunch, played it a little at launch, and honestly I really want to play and enjoy this game so much more. However, I'm neither into competitive nor online play and its singleplayer mode gets stale fast. It isn't anything I could chuck 30+ or 50+ hours into. This game has a cool concept and I love it but I'm missing an incentive to stick to it which is a shame.

Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Caters For Players In The Southern Hemisphere, Finally

KarateLuigi

As a "northerner" I will stick to northern hemisphere seasons, but I really approve them acknowledging that another half of the world exists. So... nothing I'd use myself, but I'm happy for our dear Australians and co.

€: On an unrelated note, it took me way too long to realise that apple is, in fact, not part of the clock display. I blame playing farming sims what with their tendency to add a little season icon to their clocks.

Re: Random: Animal Crossing Fan Inspires Us All By Maintaining GameCube Town For 17 Years

KarateLuigi

@Doktor-Mandrake Almost. It's not that it was originally planned as an N64 release, but the first instalment IS for the N64 and wasn't released outside of Japan. It got an enhanced GameCube port (Doubutsu no Mori+) which was released as Animal Crossing in the rest of the world. Said port got yet another enhancement later which wasn't released outside of Japan afaik (Doubutsu no Mori e+).

Re: Round-Up The Animals Again, In The Complete Edition Of Harvest Moon: Light Of Hope

KarateLuigi

@Tejan hmm, even with each release getting better it still doesn't entice me at all to be honest, especially when looking at screenshots or descriptions including yours (Minecraft style? Mobile game-y? I'm afraid it's a very hard pass from me even if I were to ignore the art style). Which doesn't necessarily apply to future instalments, of course, so I shall continue keeping an eye on those.

The thing is I'm way more interested in Story of Seasons, the whole relationship + family aspect and thus also visuals are the main reason I play them. Which is why Stardew Valley for example never managed to interest me (got it for co-op only and I still cannot imagine myself playing it alone - it doesn't add anything of note for my personal taste while also lacking what I love most about HM/SoS. Basically why settle for this or new HM if there's a whole franchise - old HM/SoS - that suits my taste way better?).

But I digress. While I still have to pass I genuinely do thank you for your input and for the insight!

Re: Round-Up The Animals Again, In The Complete Edition Of Harvest Moon: Light Of Hope

KarateLuigi

To be honest the more I see of Harvest Moon since the HM/SoS split the more I shy away from it. I've been a fan since the very first game but somehow I really cannot get into the "new" HM's art style and not having heard anything good about these games isn't helping either.

@Nintendzoey have a thanks from me as well! I was sort of eyeing Portia since it was announced for Switch and this is quite important to hear.
