@AstroTheGamosian What are you talking about? No one can "appeal" from the grant of a patent. You can object during the granting process, but no one did.
@AstroTheGamosian every game draws its origin from previous games. The problem with all of your examples is that they all come from an era where you could not patent video games. We are now in a timeline where patents can be granted for video games.
There are certain aspects of games that are common elements that cannot be patented. Then there are specific game genres and specific series in those genres continue to innovate from prior iterations. The innovations within that genre are what is being protected, not the use of that particular game element across the board.
@iLikeUrAttitude I didn't use logic. It's often a marker to a poor argument to use "by your logic..." Try actually developing an argument that meets mine rather than resorting to red herrings and straw men.
@w1p3out amazing riposte. Yeah I don't understand the meaning of a commonly used English term. Palworld literally took existing Pokemon designs and ripped them off. Even the name of the Company responsible for the game is a rip. If it didn't look like Pokemon it wouldn't have seen the light off day.
@Pillowpants How about developers just come up with their own ideas? Taking someone else's formula and passing it off as your own is not moving the games industry forward.
@Pillowpants Nintendo absolutely should protect its IPs. Palworld is a blatant ripoff. There is nothing added to the gaming world by copying existing ideas.
You have no idea what you’re talking about. The only thing that can be patented is an invention. I’m a lawyer. Think again about arguing on a subject matter over which you hold little competence.
@Ogbert and you still don’t understand how patents work. There is no need to patent something in order to provide protection for others. The prior art doctrine does that.
@Zuljaras Allow me to let you in on something. This is how patents work, you make a list of claims and steps, including the inventive ones, and the END PRODUCT of those steps is what gets the Patent protection, not each of the individual steps that are not inventive.
@tobsesta99 HAHAHAHA. Except it is. Developers took the risk to develop their product for market. They get the exclusive right to sell their product and that means preventing criminal low lives from pirating.
@Spider-Kev You still own the system. You can decide to sell it if you like. What you can't do is try to work around the protections in the system to maintain IP protection. And this isn't new. Even the record companies were suing the makers of dual tape decks back in the 80s. If you want to be able to change your OS, keep your system off line, and don't expect new software.
@Matl No you don't understand the law. Irreparable damage has nothing to do with the size of a company. It means that damages cannot be properly calculated and if the conduct is allowed to continue more damages would occur. You're not a lawyer and you are arguing with one. Stop.
@Zuljaras because you don’t understand how patents work. It’s not a patent over each of the individual steps. It’s a patent protecting any new game that relies upon ALL of the steps.
@Lizuka no it’s not. If someone invests money in inventions they deserve protection. It actually promotes new ideas too, because developers are forced to come up with their own ideas rather than just copying.
@Truegamer79 This particular author seems to like reminding everyone that the Switch 2 doesn't have the specs of the PS5 and current xbox. Like we all somehow forgot.
We have a portable console, its never going to have the specs of a stay at home. Quit the lazy "journalism."
@Mikey_205 NIntendo has sales. It used to discount games too, the Player's Choice versions being the example. Nintendo just realized after the runaway success of the Wii, that certain of its games are evergreen sellers and they don't need to discount to move stock.
@Mikey_205 developers need to cover their production costs. Once those are covered, and the early adopters have made their purchase they put the game on sale. Standard market rules.
It will never cease to amaze me that people will complain that totally optional purchases might require a bit of extra money, but that extra money is for things that can be used for other things AND if you decide not to splash the extra money you can still enjoy your purchase.
Its a chicken and egg relationship, Pew doesn't get any clicks unless he is playing video games and those games are copyrighted in the first place. He can't complain about having to pay his fair share of the revenue generated when he has to exploit someone else's IP in order to get the revenue. Let's face it this guy makes a fortune for basically recording his own pass-times. His complaints ring hollow.
@Danrenfroe2016 Except it's not socialism, it's protectionism. George W Bush placed a steel tariff in place in 2002, no-one would ever call him a socialist.

Game key cards are an excellent idea. Saves the cost of an expensive cart and still retains a resale value. But people will still bitch and complain.

@Lowdefal That's how it started. Just because everyone needed to borrow from prior art doesn't mean its now acceptable.
