Nintendo's later comments should be interpreted to mean that non-selling amiibos would likely be discontinued, and I think that comment was made so the market would not think that there will be a continuous supply of even the non-selling ones.

Think about this rationally. Is there a Fire Emblem or Animal Crossing game for the WiiU currently? Are such games planned for the future? If so why would Nintendo cut supply of Amiibos that might have functionality for those games (which would drive demand for those Amiibos)? Secondly, isn't there a planned adapter for the 3DS to allow amiibo use? Why would Nintendo cut supply of certain Amiibos when its potential 3DS market is not yet available?
