Re: Review: KORG M01D (3DS eShop)

JonWahlgren

@NekoGeo It's actually pretty straightforward and you don't have to dig too deep to get a lot out of it. The manual explains how to use everything but playing around is the best way to learn.

@HaNks You're thinking of DS-10, which is available as a retail release. This, M01D, is only available on the eShop in the west.

Re: Nintendo Denies Permission For a Live Stream of Super Smash Bros. Melee At EVO 2013

JonWahlgren

@LordGeovanni Shoryuken organizes the tournament, and NoA told them that they couldn't stream Smash Bros. They published the news, and it spread kinda everywhere super quick.

We emailed one of our Nintendo contacts asking for comment and they said they were looking in to it. Said contact emailed us right before we posted our new story saying that the decision was reversed.

So, it was definitely NoA's doing, but we still aren't sure of the reasoning behind it. Given that it's way past business hours in NoA's time zone I wouldn't expect to hear back from them until at the earliest tomorrow, provided they even bother commenting at all.

Re: Review: Resident Evil Revelations (Wii U)

@ivanmata You mean like "Graphics: 7, Sound: 8, Gameplay: 7" etc? We're not doing that, sorry! We already have a bunch of pretty stars to use; we don't need any more.

We don't feel this score is inconsistent at all. The game was designed for a handheld and a lot of the shortcuts they can get away with (e.g. marionette enemy animation, texture detail or goofy low-poly models) on a handheld are much more glaring on a big screen. So, its faults are far more obvious and can more easily hinder one's enjoyment.

(Also, just because it has more stuff doesn't mean it's a better game. It just means it has more stuff.)

8 is a pretty good score, y'all. In fact, we consider it "very good":

If we award a game an eight, you can be sure if you like the genre this is a sound buy for you. Minor niggling factors or a badly judged difficulty spike may have made this game fall short of a nine, but it is not to be dismissed lightly.

Re: First Impressions: The Legend of Zelda 3DS

JonWahlgren

@ACK: I don't have a problem if you, or any other reader, aren't pleased with my analysis, but to have someone seemingly question whether I even performed the basic task required to remotely qualify for tackling the preview in the first place is, frankly, ridiculous. That wasn't directed at you either.

Well, it's not like there isn't a problem, because I want to be thorough and inclusive for the benefit of those not fortunate enough to have had access to that event yesterday. Having an opinion isn't a problem.

As far as the write-up goes, the demo was just the one dungeon and frankly doesn't feel very illustrative of the final game, so I wasn't prepared to toot the horn or sound the alarm on whether the game is on the right path or not. Previews are weird like that, especially if, like here, this is the first time anyone outside of Nintendo got their hands on the game. To me, it felt an awful lot like a standard top-down Zelda game, which I feel I made clear towards the end.

Perhaps it was a mistake but I wrote this with the assumption that the reader would already have some familiarity with LttP, or a 2D Zelda in general, because a lot of tropes carry over into this one, hence why I didn't go into great detail on that stuff. The dungeon had a big emphasis on verticality, which fits in with the first game's design. Other than that the dungeon didn't stand out very much — enemies and encounters were standard and a bit dull, all seen in LttP. Even the boss was a recycled standard Zelda-style boss.

My impression was that there seemed to be three things Nintendo wanted to actually show off with this demo, so that's what I wanted to focus on:

  • It's a 2D Zelda that kinda looks like LttP, which, yes, it totally is and does.
  • Link can turn into a hieroglyph and walk across the wall. I mention that the sample puzzles were simplistic but proved that the concept has promise.
  • Verticality will be emphasized in the stage design. I climbed a ten-story tower. I think they nailed that one.

Re: Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue Nine

JonWahlgren

@TheRavingTimes haha yeah my initial approach was pretty terrible, but I've since beat it using a sinolar tactic.

originally I figured since my team was mostly overpowering I could fight on two fronts, but that's a generally terrible idea unless your weakest unit is able to slaughter all opposition. Which mine wasn't (I thought it might be a good opportunity to grind).

I kept everyone together, recruited Severa and knocked it out. <3 Lucina.

Re: Wii U January Sales in U.S. May be Higher Than NPD Figures, Thanks To Resellers

Interesting how a plan like that would've backfired. I'm curious how February's numbers will stack up in comparison — given the dearth of new software, I wouldn't expect any movement until March numbers come in.

Also, this is the second time I've seen that show referenced today, which I had never heard of before being not-British. First was this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-21654930
